One of the best supergroups of all time. Sadly, their discography is not large, especially as Roy passed away not long after their first album. You've done both of their biggest hits, but they have a few more you could give a listen to - "Heading For the Light", "She's My Baby", and "Inside Out" are worth it. RIP George, Roy, and Tom. I chuckle when I think of Roy in the room with these guys, apparently they said to him, “you’re the best voice out of all of us.” Roy simply said “yes.” It’s fascinating to me how much Roy’s voice hits men square in the heart and soul. It never fails. He has a cry in his voice that men know. And they recognize he knows their heart, where their love lies.
The story behind this song is so cool, George and Jeff are in LA, Jeff calls Roy "hey come meet Goerge and let's have lunch", George gets a call, needs a b side to a single for release, now they need a place to record, Bob has a studio in his garage, Roy wants to tag along, George has to get his guitar at Tom's house, Tom tags along, get to Bob's, "What do we write about" George see a box with a sticker, and Handle With Care is born
The story I heard was Petty fooling around with Lynn, and Tom liked to help older acts like Donavan and Orbison so was last to join. Petty seems to be the core of this group. Nobody else among them were making hits, this is Petty's writing.
“The Quiet Beatle” definitely had something special. Not like it’s the only song he ever wrote as a solo artist, but c’mon: “While my guitar gently weeps” is an absolute masterpiece. The Traveling Wilburys is a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "End Of The Line", "Heading For The Light", "Inside Out", "Tweeter & The Monkey Man", "Dirty World", "Last Night", "She's My Baby", "Rattled", "Nobody's Child", "Congratulations" etc. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).

“Curly Head” is Jeff Lynne, the driving force behind ELO. (and an amazing record producer who has worked with ALL the biggest names) PS - they do a version of “Nobody’s Child” that will make you cry. (bring a box of tissues)
Jeff Lynne, a co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys in 1989, was the leader, lead singer, and sole song writer of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra 1971-1986). He also produced albums by Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison (to name a few). He also produced the Beatles "Free As A Bird" in 1995. He is one who has always liked his privacy, so you never really heard much about him in the media. He's a musical genius, considered by many to be a shy, quiet, down to Earth, nice, humble, and low key kind of guy. He's an amazing man who wrote "Evil Woman" in 20 minutes while waiting in a studio to record, and who wrote the complete "Out Of The Blue" (1977) double vinyl album in only two weeks after sequestering himself in a chalet in the Swiss Alps!
They literally had a week to write and record that album. Jeff "The Genius" Lynne, formerly of ELO, was producing George's album that had "Got My Mind Set On You" and they wanted a B side. Things came together, and the rest is history. Watch the documentary made about how it all came together.
You would have to be a big Beatles' fan from the past to understand that one of the verses in the song was about George's experience with The Beatles. "Been stuck in airports, terrorized Sent to meetings, hypnotized Overexposed, commercialized Handle me with care"

In 1977 the year that Elvis died Johnny Cash decided to pay respects to his friend on his Christmas TV special with the three remaining members of the Sun Records Million Dollar Quartet plus Roy Orbison by singing a version of "This Train". So that supergroup was Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins and when they pay tribute to Elvis it's something quite amazing (again no egos) so if you can find I would definitely recommend you watching/reacting to it.
Great tune! Love George's singing. But Roy Orbison's voice. Wrings my heart.. Nothing like it. So warm. Right Amber. Unique. And those baby pics! Great reaction! Thanks!!
The verse that begins with "Been stuck in airports, terrorized..." was how George sometimes felt about being in the Beatles. "Overexposed, commercialized, handle me with care..."
This is what I came here to comment on. Hearing George sing those lyrics really drives home how terrifying some of his experiences as a Beatle really were. And he was so young at the time, too!
It kicks off with the sublime soft vocals of Harrison, then the dreamy voice of Orbison.......to then be crucified with Dylans nails down a blackboard vocals!
The mutual respect that they all had for each other was just off the scale - ego's firmly left behind, something I wonder wouldn't happen so smoothly in todays music industry! RIP to those of this irreplaceable supergroup that once was who are sadly no longer with us.
My favorite Wilburys song!! Please consider these songs from the band members. Tom Petty Learning To Fly. George Harrison When We Was Fab. Jeff Lynne (ELO) Telephone Line. Roy Orbison You Got It. Bob Dylan Positively 4th Street. And the Wilburys have so many other songs worth a listen!! Love you guys... Keep smiling!! 🎶😁🎶
That sweet smile from Roy Orbison at the 5:35 mark is all but heart rendering, but in an emtionally lovely way........a way that makes me feel so grateful to have grown up with his music and how he was one of the early pioneers of pop/ rock/folk/country music who had a profound influence on George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. May you R.I.P. Mr. Orbison.
As I recall, "Handle With Care" received a lot of airplay when released in 1988 (due to the superstar artists involved) but it only reached #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The follow--up single "End of the Line" (which I also heard quite frequently) peaked @ #63! Strange but true.
I more or less recall the same about the album being popular but the singles not being as big. Should have been respected more at the time. I can honestly say I was too young to appreciate this song then as much as I do now. I was 14 in 1988 and a huge Metalhead. It’s not that I didn’t like it, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and a ton of other bands just got more of my attention.
Depends on the demographic of your fanbase, you could shift a billion albums and not have a hit single. I haven't bought a single since I was about 17 ( Which was a long time before the Wilbury's formed ) but I have The Wilbury's albums.
For your next Bob Dylan song, I would suggest reacting to "Hurricane." It's an 8-minute song, but tells the story of boxer Rubin (Hurricane) Carter, who spent 20 years in prison for murder. It's got Dylan's typical biting lyrics and includes a haunting violin throughout the song.
I don’t know if someone mentioned this before. But the “Curly haired guy” is Jeff Lynne, amazing music producer responsible for so many hits and he was also the lead singer and guitarist for Electric Light Orchestra.
Jeff Lyne was the catalyst here. He was originally in The Move then moved on to the ELO. George asked him to produce an album for him (Cloud Nine) and ' Handle With Care' was a song George wrote but didn't quite know what to do with. He and Jeff were recording in Dave Stewarts house and the idea for the Wilburys came to fruition. Did you recognise Jim Keltner on drums ?
Roy's voice is just so clean and on pointe. He's definitely the most vocally talented of the group and they wrote with that in mind, making sure there were points throughout the album where it could just shine. I recommend Running Scared for a super powerful and focused performance from him. Jeff Lynne is the curly haired guy and was one of the founding members of ELO and it's main driving force after the first album (well 1 1/2). Check out early Jeff singing with ELO's 10538 Overture, a seminal song in music history.
They are brilliant. "End of the line" - I defy you to keep your feet still during that song 🎵 most of them have some really good beats... great vibe and amazing talent collaboration for sure!!!
On a serious note, this is one of those rare times when musicians actually are actively listening to each other. Each voice flows into the next. The music is simple. It's the harmonics between George, Roy, and everyone else that makes it great.
Of course, HAD to Buy the CD! So much good stuff on there, and I enjoyed it all! Of course, all the Artists are Hall Of Fame, esp. Roy Orbison. He goes so far back, and his voice WAS STILL just as great as during his prime! RIP to those we've lost.... They were ALL Special in their Own Way! Yet still came together so well, too.
Mate, you have Tom Petty who is amazing at belting out a chorus, Jeff Lynne has a very solid voice, George Harrison who has a beautiful and relaxed voice, Roy Orbison a powerful, yet soulful beautiful voice and Bob Dylan who is the greatest songwriter of all time that ties them together with Lyrics, but also provides that husky backing to help the others stand out more and they are all great on Guitar.
Wonder how many years George dreamed of playing guitar with Dylan playing harmonica. And all the other 4 were just totally awed singing with Roy, he was huge even before the Beatles
George Harrison (Beatles) and Jeff Lynne (maestro of ELO… writer, composer, lyricist, singer of EVERY ELO song of which there are many great ones) came up with the idea of getting a group together while talking as friends one day. Each suggested several artists to be in the group, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, and all agreed. They met at Dylan's house and wrote all the music in a week. Jeff produced the album The Traveling Wilburys”. This super group won the Grammy for best new group for their efforts that year. Every song is an absolute GEM!
A related cut worth checking out is While My Guitar Gently Weeps, one of George Harrison's best songs but the version done in his honor at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tribute. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne on lead vocals. Steve Winwood on organ, Dhani Harrison (George's son) on rhythm guitar and a stunning guitar solo by Prince. This is a legendary live performance!!! A+ video as well.
This was actually Roy Orbisons last album before he sadly passed. But before he died Tom petty called him to let him know their album was a massive success.. Roy was very happy.
The song peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. This song was the first recording made by the group, although it was originally intended as a bonus track on a European single by George Harrison. When he and Jeff Lynne presented the song to Harrison's record company, the executives insisted it was too good for that purpose, a decision that resulted in the formation of the Wilburys.
God it’s so sad to think Tom, George and Roy are gone. Especially Tom being so young. I miss Tom so much. His death and Princes death, I may never get past them and the waste.
Amber nailed it . 1 of the only EGO free bands, they all loved music so much as musicians singers and writers, that’s what makes them so special together, they can feed off each other not on each other like most bands do.
I really think that George was the one who was really able to get all of them together. The great part is that they were or became friends during the recording and the sad thing, as has been mentioned in other comments, Roy Orbison was really making a comeback to popularity with this and a solo album that was released around the same time (You Got it is one from that album you should check out) when he passed away. RIP Roy, Tom and George three legends of music.
I didn't see it in this video, but if you watch the official video, it shows a pair of hands and a harmonica. You would think either Bob Dylan or Tom Petty would be playing it, since they both regularly play harmonica and guitar at the same time. However, if you look close, it shows someone with a black jacket and red shirt playing the harmonica. It was Roy Orbison! I didn't know he played harmonica.
Fantastic! Such a unique sound, a real masterpiece. It's a moment in time captured perfectly. Please please react to Roy Orbison 'It's Over', you won't believe how great his voice is.
For me the coolest thing about them is you can hear all of their individual styles come through in their music. You can hear the Beatles, the Heartbreakers, Elo ,Dylan ,Roy you can hear them all .
What an amazing moment in time to have these iconic musician together. It's truly a treasure! RIP Roy, George, and Tom. Loved this group and still listen to their songs.
There's a mini-documentary on UA-cam about how they came together.. and it includes behind the scenes video of them recording at Bob Dylan's House.. a very fun watch if you get the chance!
They were actually good friends and each was in some way an influence on each other. It was a blessing that they all got to do an album together before Roy Orbison, and later George Harrison and Tom petty, died. Heaven's got to have one hell of a rock band!
"Handle with Care" - is the song which brought them together and made that group... George was attempting to make a b-side song for a single, and happened to meet up with the others along the way to do that, he invited them to tag along and hang out. He took the tittle from the words on a box in the corner and wrote the song around it.
Thirty Five years ago, this group was HUGE!! These five icons coming together just to have fun and play some rock and roll away from the expectations of their own careers was major - and they were all friends who brought other friends into it.

So that supergroup was Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins and when they pay tribute to Elvis it's something quite amazing (again no egos) so if you can find I would definitely recommend you watching/reacting to it.
Really appreciate George's voice in this song. The whole song is great! (Edit: Love the harmonica and drums!)
The curly haired gentleman is the genius behind ELO Jeff Lynn and he is the one who brought the Travelling Wilbury’s together!
It kicks off with the sublime soft vocals of Harrison, then the dreamy voice of Orbison.......to then be crucified with Dylans nails down a blackboard vocals!
Roy was like an orchestra. Nothing but legends here.
The whole album is brilliant, and by the way, that curly haired guy is genius Jeff Lynne of ELO.
The talent in that room is mind blowing.
So sad that three of these five legends are no longer with us.
They did what they did is because they all loved to make great music. They were all good friends on top of it all.
George Harrison's ability to make the 12 string guitar sing as part of the song is amazing!
The mutual respect that they all had for each other was just off the scale - ego's firmly left behind, something I wonder wouldn't happen so smoothly in todays music industry! RIP to those of this irreplaceable supergroup that once was who are sadly no longer with us.
Today's music industry is 14-28ish. Adult musicians and music are in the background.
Mr. Orbison.
J & Amber, you'll love their "Heading for the Light"!! It has a real Beatles feel, George Harrison/Jeff Lynne on lead vocals.
The curly haired guy is the mastermind of ELO… Jeff Lynne. You will remember who he is by doing more ELO reactions
Speaking of legendary super group need to check out The Highway Men ,Johnny Cash,Waylon Jennings,Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson
The Traveling Wilbury's were fantastic and I always get chills when I hear Roy Orbison's voice on this song!
This does not tell the full story, as the album did well, as did the video for Handle With Care on MTV.
That is odd. I was 21 then and I remember hearing these songs all the time!!!
@@paulhanson5164 True. I went out and bought the album based on how good this song was. I didn’t waste money on singles in the 80s.
All their voices are different and they are all great, so when you put them together the only possible result is an undeniable magic.
One of the few Dylan preformed songs that I like.
And I'd throw in Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again too
@@stephaniesupernault3970 ..and you can understand all the words sung.
Absolutely. One of Dylan's greatest lyric and the musical arrangement is outstanding.
My favorite
I think you guys are right on Roy. All five are legends, but Roy's singing on this song was icing on the cake. RIP Roy, George, Tom.
I don’t know if someone mentioned this before. But the “Curly haired guy” is Jeff Lynne, amazing music producer responsible for so many hits and he was also the lead singer and guitarist for Electric Light Orchestra.
@@amykidd6811 yeah. I agree. That’s why I said I didn’t know if someone mentioned it before. It’s an obvious comment. Lol
"Was" lead singer and guitarist? Isn't ELO still performing?
@@DianaJG8 yes. My bad wording. But they don’t perform very often. None scheduled this year.
@@GeekingOutWithPete more known as 'Jeff Lynne's ELO' these days. Only two original members left.
@@GeekingOutWithPete - Ok, cool! - NP Thanks! 😊👍
Yes, there will never be another like Roy Orbison, love this song and group, five legends of rock
They were all really good friends, like many musicians and just wanted to jam together for fun!
Such a great group. Roy’s voice. WOW! ❤❤❤
They are brilliant. "End of the line" - I defy you to keep your feet still during that song 🎵 most of them have some really good beats... great vibe and amazing talent collaboration for sure!!!
Harrison,Dylan, Petty and Lynn all loved and bowed to Roy during these sessions
On a serious note, this is one of those rare times when musicians actually are actively listening to each other. Each voice flows into the next. The music is simple. It's the harmonics between George, Roy, and everyone else that makes it great.
All super talented......but dang when Roy comes in 🙂🙂🙂
Of course, HAD to Buy the CD!
Means a lot to me seeing Roy Orbison smile. After the crises he had to go through he looked happy amoung these musician fellows. RIP
George's voice comes in so pure & beautiful, then the soulful Roy Orbison, takes it to another level.
Yes, please react to that performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
AGREED!! A stunning performance!
Prince was pissed he didn't make a "top 100 guitarists" list and destroyed the critics with his playing that night.
Roy Orbison has a once in a lifetime voice, we are lucky to hear it .
Roy toured with buddy holly
This was actually Roy Orbisons last album before he sadly passed. But before he died Tom petty called him to let him know their album was a massive success.. Roy was very happy.
If you haven't done it, you must do "End of the Line", you'll cry at their tribute to Roy.
I absolutely love the traveling willburys and every artist in the group individually
Jeff Lynne's production, song writing, and instrument contributions made up a good part of what you see.
Yeah Harrison was dominate in this one but quite a few of their tunes has a Jeff Lynne vibe all over it
I'm cryin'. The Wilburys were a true gift to all of us.
Rush never had members with egos and were a band that retired because of age 🇨🇦
I really think that George was the one who was really able to get all of them together. The great part is that they were or became friends during the recording and the sad thing, as has been mentioned in other comments, Roy Orbison was really making a comeback to popularity with this and a solo album that was released around the same time (You Got it is one from that album you should check out) when he passed away. RIP Roy, Tom and George three legends of music.
You need to hear Roy Orbison duet with K. D. Lang "Crying"
The vocals of Ray Orbison are extraordinary.
This song was the catalyst that brought these 5 legends together. Great song. Great reaction!! RNB
Respect to you both for respecting the grand musicians in view.
This song and video always just chills me completely. It's just talent without equal.
They were all neighbours and personal friends and they would hang together and jam for fun. That's how it started.
For me the coolest thing about them is you can hear all of their individual styles come through in their music. You can hear the Beatles, the Heartbreakers, Elo ,Dylan ,Roy you can hear them all .
Another classic George song, with all the others contributing. Great beat, great lyrics, and George on slide guitar. Doesn’t get any better.
Your smiles say it all! This song was and is incredible, from a timeless, amazing group of true artists. Love it.
It's been fun going on this journey with ya'll. I have learned a lot as well from this channel about these wonderful artists and all the backstories....keep it up guys!!
I've been a big fan of the Wilbury's since long before they were Wilbury's. One of the absolute best super groups I've ever known. 👍
