@Inferno Jones Cuphead is an indie game and a lot of indie game devs are actually really cool about this stuff. They actually donated some original cells for one of the Games Done Quick events and are generally supportive of the speed-running community.
Nintendo would have sued him instead. Honestly with Indies at least from some personal experience (not fully involved in the indie dev entirely) we like showing off our baby per se. Especially the tricks interesting things etc. Also sometimes we like showing them off because they were purely a pain in the ass to put in and the engine seems like it wanted to fight us the entire way through.
Cuphead is such a stylish looking game with fluid animations and a unique art style. Thanks for breaking all new boundaries of creativity cup head devs and thank you boundary break.
Cuphead is one of my favorite games of all time so to see it through this lens was really fascinating! The little artist's notes add such a personal touch to a game I already hold so dearly.
Really makes you appreciate the game’s painstakingly created characters and environments even more. And seeing the notes written under the boat is just like watching a rough draft/sketch version of a cartoon. So damn cool!
An alternate timeline where Cuphead and Mugman tried to get their souls back from the Devil by going out of bounds to reach him instead of fighting everyone
4:00 - A small correction: When Brineybeard does his whistling animation, he props up a leg on the ship's bow, allowing you to see at least one of the peg legs. And though it goes by quickly, when the boat takes over for the final phase, you can see Brineybeard falling into the sea in the background, revealing both legs.
4:10 Having experimented with the Unity Engine before, they most likely parented the fin to the shark to make it easier to delete them both at once after the exit animation completed. Deleting an object also deletes any children objects attached to it, so them deleting the shark automatically deletes the fin as well.
Shesez spreading positive dev love once again Seriously, BB makes me appreciate how creative devs have to be not only with what you can see, but what you were never meant to see
The art team worked incredibly hard on this, so I'm sure they were MORE than happy to share about their work. And I am more than happy to watch. Great episode, Shesez!
10:03 This is obviously so that they can animate them separately. For instance, the board can roll in any direction or stay still while the can is attacking.
This was a really cool episode! I loved seeing all the zoom outs and the fact that you were able to get so many explanations from the people who made the game is amazing!
Game Recommendation: Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion DLC, there's a nice mix of unique objects floating around and would be interesting to see the unaccesible areas in-game
One of my all time favorite games. I think my favorite animation is either Werner or Cala. The color schemes on those are both incredible. My favorite boss in the game is Dr. Kahl and I think the most "atmospheric" aspect is the Phantom Express.
Tetrabit gaming showed us some of these things, mainly how that bit with the stage transition worked, and a couple of things that were out of bounds. He even covered the intro animation, and how it worked. tetra dint show us the layering involved though, great video by the way.
I always love these videos, because not only are the zoom outs and whatnot cool, but I really love game design, and always like to pause the video and guess on how certain things were done
I adore the style of this game. It's so nostalgic and comforting. Reminds me of childhood cartoons. It was also amazing that the devs talked with you and answered questions. Have a wonderful night Shesez.
Cuphead is already a couple of years old already, and there's still more to discover! What is even more amazing is that even the devs shared what's in their creation too! More power to the creators! May you guys be blessed with your awesome work!
This was so cool to see! I really love the Cuphead aesthetic, just not a fan of the actual game. 😩 It’s so awesome you got the devs to contribute information to this episode as well!!
Hey Shesez, for a good game recomendation, I really think it'd be interesting if you did Viva Piñata. The game can have very forced perspectives, and you never get to explore the island you live on. Plus, I'm sure there's secrets within it.
I have to say it's interesting that you and everyone else involved were able to take apart this game to see the many layers. A game like Shadow of the Colossus or P.T., you just have to program a camera to be able to do certain things, like being able to move across the X, Y, and Z axises. With Cuphead, you'd figure that everything would be relatively flat with all the animation piling on top of each other, making it almost impossible to see what's underneath, like Minecraft. Not only could you pull the camera back, you were able to lift up the layers just to see what was underneath.
This is a game I never thought there would be anything worth boundary breaking for, but I've been pleasantly surprised! I adore the artistry in Cuphead. Thank you for giving us more reasons to appreciate!
Really interesting that shared all those secrets with you! Its surprising because some others out there i believe wouldn't accept it for not revealing their secrets for other companies to spy and copy!
Cuphead is such a beautiful work of art, I absolutely love it. I seriously hope they make a sequel. I actually bought it for myself on PC and then bought it again to play on switch...
So many animation techniques here as well as video game ones. It's awesome to see just how much work they ACTUALLY put into Cuphead. It's so damn insane just seeing all that's there!

Impressed by how helpfull the deve team was, thats how you treat potential customers. Not into platform game, but the deve team have earned my respect.
Layman's guess about the shark fin, it's the same object as the shark, the animation frames just have the whole shark pasted on top. My only experience with game animation is Macromedia Flash over a decade ago, but that's the kind of thing I'd do in my projects.
Love this game, even picked up the artbook on day 1 ( which I recommend, it goes into alot of production detail that Shesez mentions in this vid, and it shows all the hard work and love put into this game! )!!! Ty for the video!!!
I mean, it makes perfect sense why they would use digital techniques for the characters and animation. One, it's easier to do than hand drawn stuff, two, in old animations it was always very obvious which things were actually animated because the stills were always heavily detailed and painstakenly drawn, but anything that moved stood out with clearer borders and a more simplified look to them. It's pretty good attention to detail in terms of capturing that old aesthetic.
This video was kickass! What about making a video about Viva Piñata TiP and what’s hiding out of bounds?? This is something I’d love to see more than anything else ever.
It’s so cool that the dev team actually helped out with questions

@@ilovedrums1000 I would expect far worse from xbox.
It's incredible knowing that the backgrounds and most of the bosses' animations are the original paper drawings. Great work.
Cuphead is such a stylish looking game with fluid animations and a unique art style.
Thanks for breaking all new boundaries of creativity cup head devs and thank you boundary break.
You are the new Justin Y.
I wouldn't call it a "unique" art style since it's basically an homage to early hand-drawn animations but I agree they're incredible nonetheless.
I have seen your channel in quite a few videos
Welcome to cartoons of my childhood aka the 90s. Back then every disney cartoon looked like this
@@MarioSonicBee most likely using a like bot. I know another user who gets like 300 likes under every vid but almost 0 comments. Which is odd

Ye. Animating a video game by hand is an insane proposition, even with digital coloring.

I love when Dev teams get involved with stuff like this - it really shows you how much they care about the game and it's community
I actually discovered Briney Beard's peg legs when I got a mystery figure of him. Nice to see it was incorporated in the actual game animations.

the more you look into this game the more you realize it is an actual masterpiece
5:14 You can see both sea captains legs in frame as he’s falling out of the sky. So that is in fact seen by the player in game.

Just go back to watching 40s cartoons lol. Their backgrounds are gosh darn beautiful.
You can see his peg legs when he is falling into the ocean
But the animation when he is flying is different, so technically the animation frames in the boat didn't need the peg legs.
Manored yeah ur right, u never see his legs when he’s in the boat but he said that you never see them altogether
I have a figure of Brineybeard not on the ship, so I knew he had 2 peg legs.
I like How goope la grande's 2nd form is just looking at cuphead and his first form just like yyyeeesss......
