Your attitude of helping those who want it by sharing your knowledge is the highest form of honorable. I made a good living and had a great life due to someone like you doing just exactly what you are doing. I made it a point to pass on what I had learned in the same manner.
I appreciate these videos you put out. I'm in school right now, watching this on my break because I was having the same problem as your boy. Keep the vids coming, PLEASE!!!
A tip that you should do every time is get comfortable, plant both feet, get your hip planted, also an elbow and use both hands on the stinger, if your right handed grip the stinger in your right hand and use your left to cradle your right. Stroke your intended path so you wont get in a bind half way through. Sometimes you'll want to adjust your position a bit to continue your weld, just move your ark forward while you get the new position then come back and continue where you left off, any trace you'll be running over with the weld.
Practice passes with no power, just mimic the action and movement you want and practice run until your position is comfortable and can complete the pass
6010/6011 was hard to weld with but once you get a little bit of weld time you’ll get to know what you need to work with.. keep up the good work teaching.. that’s the best way is to practice and learn different techniques
Im 60, ive been welding since i was 16. Each individual has a slightly different technique, ive seen lots of pipe welders doing stuff which shouldnt work. Learn the basics and you will find your own style that is right for you.
I really dig your style bro, you Texas boys are some crazy good pipe welders. I’m up in Seattle in my last class at school right now doing TIG pipe, and gonna mess with some 6010 root/7018 cap and then TIG root/ Flux Core cap. Your videos me brush up on my 6010 game since it’s been a while. Best wishes and health to you, keep up the great content!
I was taught to go uphill in my welding program by my instructor whiners cwi ,couldn't weld down hill if I tried, after not welding for a while I couldn't weld up hill and down hill has been my go to for welding. Good info reminds of my 2nd school for welding for pipe. 6G certified but never did get into pipe welding. Spend a good dime to learn but I guess if I tried,I might be able to get a 6G done lol...
Ikr. It almost makes me cringe every time I see a down hill. Especially with low hy. It just seems as if the strength will be missing. But I guess because of pipe it will need to be more flexible. Big no no on the stuff I have to weld. Hardly any 6010 anyway. 7018 up to 12018. I need it to stay put. No flex
@@carloshart2424 yeah uphill is the key,I like overhead better haha...maybe because I tried harder and was more into it. The only coupon I ever broke was vertical ,redid it the next day and passed.1" inch coupon.
I got an apprenticeship as a pipe fitter at an hvac company I’m currently in our fab shop and for the last month I’ve been setting up one of the welders grabbing some scrap pipe and just practicing downhill 6010 for roofs then Filling them in with 7018 uphill. I’ve been doing my practice trying to see what I can notice in my own stuff as I practice and I’ve noticed stuff like undercut or key holing then I’ll ask the journeyman about it and he’ll give me a demonstration or watch me do a bead then gives me a few tips and has me try again and in one month I made more progress than I did four years ago when I was taking a few classes in high school and early community college
Good job on explaining the rod angle. I got some 6010 from a welder trailer that i bought. I couldn't get get the rod going. When i saw your video you explained it perfect. Thank you and good luck.
Remember, if your rods aren't fresh. Put them in the oven for an hour or so to drive out moisture. I'm from your area, I know your climate. Sure miss catching redfish in the surf ! '66 redface
Dammit I've done this to my helpers a few helpers at work during lunch time . They are welding already they still call me to thank me . And the feeling is awesome knowing that I did something right.👊👊👊👊👊 👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mistake #1.....70k truck when you are just breaking out lol. Worked with an old timer a few years ago still rocking an 80's squarebody Chevy. Probably paid for itself 100 times over by now! Much love and keep up the great channel!
Also when you weld bend your rod's. If you have your rod straight in the stinger your out of position for your body. Clamp it into your stinger and bent the rod end 45 degree this will get you your stinger to be closer to the pipe allowing you for more support and there for a better weld.
I have just at 40 years of age decided to teach myself to weld. Bought a second hand arc welder that came with some 1.6 rods. Lets just say from now onwards I can't get any worse. (Nice educational video brother)
So I was always taught to start at 6 o’clock work the rod up. But the I just tried they way your boi doing and came out the same. Still glad my mentor taught rig style welding does even I don’t do pipe often but it comes in handy when ever I have to weld a gas line of water line . Saludos from the Bay Area 510. Ps I always use red Lincoln 6010 my personal choice but shit I can’t find it hard to fine the red 6010.
u should do a video of preparation before welding it, preheating and whats the right temperature to weld it etc. btw just started following and really like your videos keep it up 👍👍👍
I was required to pass a 6010 open butt 6” pipe test on a 45 degree for an apprenticeship. The test had to be up hand not down. Does it make a difference? Nice video 👍🏻
It depends on the code. API 1104 which is the code for pipeline runs down hand. ASME Section IX is for bojlers and pressure vessels runs the root up hand.
Hello WeldLab, I am attaching a cylinder to my mower blade which is flat. What angle do you recommend, 45 degrees? The cylinder will be upright and the mower blade will be flat on my work table? Thanks for any tips.
I was having problems it would open up a big keyhole like tear apart the bevel and would loose control and no matter how low i would go from like 40-20 and it would still blow it iam guessing it was my rod angle sch80 12 inch pipe thought i had maybe put to lay back of a bevel and thined it but i dont thinks so or may be a mixture of both
Regrettably sold my 1964 SA-200 welder 17 years ago when we needed the money. Sweetest welding machine ever. The guy buying was going to "hot rod" it by chopping it lower, new paint and stainless panels. Those of us who have ever left a chrome wrench in the sun pick them up with welding gloves or rags and only do it once.
That's a different technique as here in Australia on 6-8 inch pipe we use 4 tacks(prevent gap change from one side to the other), weld over head to vertically up, with a key hole and a flick motion. This is so foreign as how do you know if the root run is going well if you can't see it when welding.
I am currently doing a course to learn the profession of welding in Sweden and I am currently training in pipe welding for the same situation shown in the video, but in Sweden we use 7018 for root welding and we start welding from the bottom up and this is much more difficult than the method in the video. Can you try this using 7018 and photograph it?
I like a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 landing. I noticed he was going downhill. Is that just because he's trying to get out on the pipeline. We run this same 6010 rods at school and I struggle with running them downhill. I just choke the rod too much and the arc cuts out. But I'm really good with them root passes traveling uphill. I usually whip/pack it.
Man I got a little 110/220 stick welder I’m practicing on and this is making me want to get after it more ! Where can I get a bunch of sample/coupons like this guy has ? IM HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS
I was trying to learn on some pipe at school before I go to my welding school @ college and I had a 6010 1/8th on 45-55 amps and it kept getting stuck and everything I am very professional at my horizontal welds and welding square pipe together but for some reason I could. Not get the 6010 to stay arched I keep screwing up and I spent so much time putting a bevel in this pipe I even measured 1/8 gap in between bevel with the other 6010 rod and I racked it and I litersly could not keep my weld going either stuck or it would light and spit and spit idk what I’m doing wrong I wanna do it right or at least get it going before I have my teacher help he used to be a pipe liner guy any help would be awesome . I’m 17 but I think the hardest part for welding pip is just moving your body in the right position and the angle
Find a physical activity that makes your body hard and we'll cordinated. Too much video games is not good for your body.

Always try keeping your rod 90 degrees to the weld. Also go uphill
Depends on what code the job he’s trying to get uses.
3:33 - so the incline to the bottom basically means a wrong 45 degree angle instead of the correct 90 degree angle @4:46 ?
