When you say “ it is real life weld and and i am gonna show you “ i really get motivated and encouraged, because you know every time someone shows you his best welds and you weld and the result is not like theirs, it really makes you down and you say i cannot be welder. So i really love your saying and showing us real life staff
Wow, thank you. That means a lot man. I hope I don’t let you down. Because I plan on showing some ugly ones. One of my biggest pet peeves is people showing only their pretty Welds. Everybody has ugly welds. Thanks again
Laying in that first one is always tough. Putting a bead of 6010 in that tight corner first makes the 7018 bead over the top easier. Great video as always.
@@TaylorWelding I do see in the service manual for my J.D. 310C backhoe it says to use 6010 first then follow with 7018. Preheat base metal to 130* it says. 6010 for penetration? Glad to learn that they can be welded up. I pretty much use 7014 for repair and fab here on the farm. Love using it. I never tried welding vertical but with your excellent video I will give it a try. Thanks for posting.
Don't be a stranger man! I know it's hard, I just got back from a 6 month job of 6\10's, couldn't even imagine doing YT vids and working at the same time, much appreciated content.
I give you a million dollar tip for passing your test. Clean your plates well remove all mill scale from the backing bar also before you begin! Don’t rush over heat the work piece most important clean slag and clean slag take your time on the restarts. Carry over your beads to the backing bar. Don’t be in a hurry
Yes Chris! I'm missing your welding videos much more than the ones with the finansial stuff! And learning how to get better in a trade, equips you with a skills which in my humble opinion are one of the biggest investments you can have! God bless you and your family!
Yep, would have been a better production with good audio, but the photography was really nice. I really like the close up of what is actually going on. Thanks for the nice video.
I started welding in 1987. I think the biggest problem with most welders just starting out is unrealistic expectations. You might get some decent results fairly soon, but you have to burn buckets of rods to get the consistency to be a good welder.
Great arc shots! I have some cast aluminum TIG welds in my future, and I would really like to know how to set up to record the welds while I'm learning. Then I could send the shots to a pro like you, or post them to see what I'm doing wrong on a junk part, to get the proper technique for the good parts. These are old harley pieces that I would like to save. Is there any way you could post a how-to video or some pics of your arc shot setup? Thanks and keep up the great work.
Great job! I've always used 5p or 6011 for the first pass. But all in all, it was a great presentation. I've also known journeyman welders blow that last 3" out trying to get to the next weld. Bad habit..
Hi Chris, do you have any tips on how to steady your hands and position when welding 7018 uphill. I weld 7018 in every position and get great welds except for uphill. My hands shake so bad, and no matter how much i practice i cant seem to get any better at it.
I'm just about to make a rack in the garage of a friend of mine and I'm gonna use angle ~ 2" × 2" × 3/16" for the verticals and horisontal frames for the shelfs, for which I'm gonna use 3/4" plywood. I think to use 3/32" 7018 and I'm gonna have a lot of short fillets and butts in overhead, vertical and horizontal positions. Overal dimentions are around 13' × 9' × 2'. My question Chris is, should I bevel the ends of the members (with some landing) or not? Thank you in advance!
Thanks for the video. Too much heat, arc blow and undercut are usually issues with my 7018 verticals. I am starting a project I’d love your input on. A 60’x62’ corrugated grain silo that they want a 10’x10’ overhead door cut into. Any thoughts?
Great question. That weld really was too big. It would be considered a wave for sure. I’m not sure why they do that. In my opinion, it’s no big deal as long as your flux isn’t drying up behind you. But it doesn’t matter what my opinion is. If they won’t stringers, you got to give them stringers.
Many moon's ago the Navy sent me to "high pressure plate welding school at a shipyard on the east coast, all we did was vert and horizontal overhead" stringers, no weavywobbly what so ever, all 3/8" V'ed w/ a backer plate. the reason they told us not to weave was the risk of trapping slag. I did as ordered and got my thumb print on a piece of paper three months later. I think I suffer from 7018 vertical PTSD to this day over that ordeal 😳@@TaylorWelding
Have welded for your ex caliber 7018 rod is the only rod to use very good welding rod 7018 very good video. Go up and hold each side. Don’t worry about the middle and I will get enough well for 75 years very good welding away 6013 7014 570 1811 018 312 Roding.
Puddle /size of a dime stay in the puddle move the rod slightly up and across repeat anytime your welding over head try this or that matter all the time you'll see the difference in your welds / relax put your lead over the shoulder it gets the weight off of the heavy cable which feels like it's always pulling your hand down. Bend your rod at a 90° angle while in your lead it gives you better control of the rod. let the puddle tell you when to move fill in your undercut/ puddle
How about telling us what makes it too hot? You keep saying it's too hot but I can't see why. It looks fine to me... a little too much build up but, not bad. What am I supposed to look for, to be too hot?
Sorry for the bad audio. Spur of minute videos are what they are. If you have any questions or good video ideas please leave them here.
I had a heck of a time in welding school because I always got the base metal too hot. I didn't think I was ever going to pass my plate test.
Need in&outs on getting a better down hill cap.
No problem…love all you do Chris….Paulie

Most welders act like they never have an ugly Weld. we all get them. I’m glad it was encouraging. Make each weld better than the last.
Your are by far the best welder ive seen in my 60 years of welding

Thank you! The best vertical 7018 arc shots I've seen. Awesome!
I agree with you on the best video of the weld puddle . Absolutely the very best demonstration of vertical welding. Awesome, Great video.
Glad you liked it!
Yes, great close-up arc shots! Many thanks!
Your tip about using white out instead of soapstone helped me out.
I am glad you found it helpful!

It is definitely hard to make your self wait.
Is "holding the toes" the key to preventing undercut with the 7018 rod on vertical up?
@@fastbusiness yes if you go over there and don’t stay long enough, it’ll undercut it
How about welding inside corners?

Biggest thing I tell people when using 7018 uphill or overhead is ......slow down! Make a puddle, and take it with you!
