I've been fitter/welder for 15 years, certed for plate but never pipe. I did spend some time at a few shops, one specializing in larger pressure vessels, one specializing in steam and refrigeration piping. I learned alot about 6g ASME IX at the latter, it intrigued me alot, learning about schedule pipe, the procedures, prep everything was soooo different to anything I'd ever done. I've only ever seen 1-4inch pipe, tig root with tig or stick hot pass and covers depending on the situation. I've never seen pipe welding with a stick root before ESPECIALLY with 6010 (I'm In nz I think the 31a we use is the same, please correct me if I'm wrong) very very cool learning and seeing different processes and jobs. God I love our industry! There's always new stuff to learn! Thanks so much!

The best advice i got 40 years ago when learning to weld a 6G /6GR was weld one handed and use your other to balance and move freely as you weld it becomes like a wand in your hand a bit Harry Rooter u become a metal magician and your roots resemble a wedding band when complete unfortunately most of the amazing tradesmen who taught me these skills have long since passed but I still like to think their up their in Heaven hot passing and capping

Hard to believe when I went to welding school in 1973 that we learned how to weld pipe by putting a 6010 root pass in and low hydrogen the rest of the way isn't it unreal that things are still done the same way 50 years later. What if your doctor or dentist did things exactly the same way they did 50 years ago

Weld tube, would you guys consider doing a video on the 6GR test that is common for welding offshore? I failed one. 3/16” root gap, top pipe had no bevel it was flat and there was a steep bevel on the bottom pipe w no land. Restriction plate on top. Root was to be performed with a 3/32 7018🤯. Top pipe was thicker than the bottom pipe. Both had an OD of 6”.

Get that Rod Between the pipe make the gap. Tac one side. Before you weld the other tac Put the spacer back in and hit the pipe together to close the gap because when you tac one side it begins to change shape And bend so you gotta make sure you get out back in the same gap or else half your pipe gonna be wider so make sure you get that gap closed on the Tac and you good to go

He's using a flicking back/forth technique due to the digging arc of the 6010 cellulose electrode. Some people have a more pronounced back/Firth flick while using cellulose electrodes. When welding a clean joint with no gap and a large land, it's not so much needed, but when running a gap and thin land on pipe, the digging arc of the cellulose electrodes can cause the keyhole to blow out.

Just want to say great video! I’m not a professional welder or certified or anything like that, but I know a bit of the basics on how to stick weld and mig weld, but I’ve got a question that I’m really curious about. Do welders ever stick weld 6g pipe downhill on the root pass with maybe a 6010, or is it always going to be uphill? All the demonstrations I’ve seen on UA-cam have been done uphill, but I worked with an old welder a while ago who taught me that 6010 rods run better downhill. If someone more experienced than me can answer I’d really appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day

I run a little cooler on the root. Found in the bend tests...too much "whipping" in the root allows our atmosphere to enter the molten puddle. Not ok! So, I make a small circle, bumping each wall. Of course, pointing the rod either ahead/behind depending on root opening. That breaks down the walls..."juust right"...like Goldy Locks says it.

I know plenty of welding inspectors would never let you grind a groove in the pipe to cap it.Years ago we used to be able to file our edges of our caps to dress it up, but for years now you can't put a file on it at all.

I grind the guide line lightly just between the inside of the bevel and the bead. That way, I’m not causing any damage or integrity issue to the pipe outside of the beveled/groove region. The line is in the weld essentially and then gets absorbed back with the cover up. That was exactly how CWI taught me to do it. I guess if I run into the ones who won’t let me do it way then I’ll figure something out.

@@lawrencechapman8394 it wasn't meant as disrespect in no means, I was just stating That most inspectors today wouldn't allow it.

And it is easier as a guide to follow with a lite groove in it.

Yeah. Most UA welds we aren’t allowed to cut into the base metal. Please tell us the secret. Is it with a cut off wheel?

I usually put bridge tacks in as the less pickups the better, lighter landing edge and tighter gap, less working of the electrode, but I do understand for beginners this may not be ideal

I don't weld pipes my self but I do the fitting and assembly. What I've learned is that every welder has their own preferences, no matter how experienced. Some want 2mm gap, some want 4mm, some want 1.5mm land, some don't want any for the same pipe size and welds. I know what each one of them prefer, so I just make the fittings accordingly if it is possible to predict who is going to weld them.

I work in the fertilizer industry. It's near impossible to get these truck frames and parts clean from rust. Would you make a video of rods and tricks for dirty metal welding? The rust runs so deep, you can't grind it all out and it's impossible for me to get great welds. Thanks
