YES...My uncle was caught stick welding downhill in his garage by a passing policeman and is now serving a 50 year sentence with no chance of parole. (Also avoid horizontal, it's a gateway weld...)
This should be the top comment. Best close the door to avoid the danger of passing police !
@@jsmcortina I know, I told my uncle that hundreds of times...he responded that that welding technique was a right and not a privilege and that they could have his stinger when they pried it from his cold dead hands...
@rocco_s10 It could happen....just like welding overhead shirtless with 3/4 inch jet rod on aluminum sheets with a half inch gap.
Police have nothing better to do than that crap.
@@arthurrodesiler3109 Sarcasm...it was a joke...
All those “welders” who say you can’t weld downhill clearly never worked with sheet metal or thin gauge material. Some things you can’t weld up or you will blow threw. It really comes down to what the job calls for.
What codes, most sheet metal welds have no codes, just get the job done
Never said structural. Also I’m aware most sheet metal don’t have codes I currently am in that field. My point was you can weld downhill on certain applications but some welders say you can’t that’s simply false.
Yep, a lot of aluminum sheet work or thin steel sheet just needs to be done downhill, either it’s not possible because of blow-through, or because of distortion.
I work in the fab shop and we MIG downhill because that’s what the schematic calls for. Sometimes two or three passes.
Same here. We do downhill because it’s thin gauge materials
I'm an AWS CWI since December 2013. Whether you weld 'uphill', 'downhilll', your electrode size and selection, all the fitment, root gap criteria, welding gas selection, etc are prescribed in the WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) by the company's / client's welding engineers and metallurgists, after weeks, months, years of weld tests done in labs long before the project ever begins. The only time 'we' decide how we want to make the weld is in our garages at home.
I typically hate to agree with any cwi because they are full of hot air, but you are correct lol.
@@jeepwk6.5L I'm a CWI with 32 years of welding experience under my belt. I'm not one of those CWI' who 'never done it but going to tell you how to do it. I used to hate that, too.

“Top bend”, “cap bend”, “did not break, everything is good”….fuck you acceptance criteria, buy my merch😂
@Sammy Ayo / SAA SERVICES, LLC / B&S Farms I did 7018 downhill for shits and giggles and passed the bend test. How does that make you feel?
Thats engineering at its finest. Been a welder for over 20 yrs!
I didn’t think i could learn so much in a single video. Nice job 👍🏼
This guy is a great teacher. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the content.
As an old fart who doesn't care for change,I really agree that's it's best to try to master both up and down. Once comfortable with that, try using other hand and maybe standing on your hard side just to challenge yourself a bit more. Keep up the good vids.
from another old fart that had 46 years in the game- you can't be a good welder unless you're proficient using either hand holding the stinger. some situations require using your off hand so practice practice practice.
you can't be a good welder if you can't weld with both hands imvho
@@jwafterours I've seen good welders who can only use one hand and not the other. I've seen good welders who can't use a mirror to weld, also seen good welders that can only stick weld or using only one or two processes. I've seen great fitters who are good welders,I've seen good welders who can fit. I've seen old welders who are rough as hell and young people who are lazy but are good welders. This trade hires them all.
@@derekcollins1972 what happens when you're in a tight place and you have to weld a steam line and you can't use your "good hand"? it's so tight the helper has to hand you rods. you're right this trade hires them all but only the good ones excell and are the last man standing when layoff time comes. that and seniority lol

Another great video from South Coast. I like this video and and channel because it's purely educational! Sometimes they bring Spanish speakers, women, and specialists not to only show how diverse the trade is, but also reach out to the whole world. Welding truly is a passion, and I'm grateful to having this kind of content on UA-cam. Not everyone has the financial resources to go to big schools like Tulsa, but I feel we still get that great quality instruction from teachers like Mr. Medrano!
Lastly, I dig the beat at the end. It makes what I'm looking at not feel all Southern and country lol
Great job and very well explained. Keep the videos coming AB.
Nice work i appreciate the videos . I welded in a power plant but i had a friend who had welded pipe line before he came to power plant and he bailed us out a few times on some things . He was good to me and i appreciated all he showed me how to do . Thanks again
Your right I know Pipe Fitter welders are some of the best welders there is.
I like your videos
I'm semi retired, working two, maybe three days a week.
Everyone agrees, it's a case of practice, practice, practice;
that being said, I had bin out of the game for some time, and just like in athletics, you tend to loose that "edge"
if you aren't doin' it every day.
Recently, I ended up doing some work for a client that I had done a lot of work for in the 80's
back then, I was welding(outdoors, stick) ten hours a day, six days a week
I was amazed at how much better ALL my welds were back then,
better than I do today!
Vert up; down, etc. all perfect, no flux inclusions
It was because I was doin' it all day, everyday.
Same as playing a musical instrument.
Use it or lose it.
I have the same problem, especially tig aluminum
Thank you for making movies that help many people go to work and achieve their goals
This is the video right here officer
Hi mate, thanx for your awesome video.im a boilermaker from old school..even when I use to MIG weld I would do down hand and vertical ups.As I seen with your style you nailed it as it's all about the preparation.Root gaps and amps and techniques.I weld what I'm comfortable with and have past every destructive and non destructive test.
And on every piece of membrane on a boiler the welding inspector better not see any uphill verts or they'll get your money
Did an outstanding job. I'm Retired now but wish I had a machine like that when I was an apprentice.
Hi bud I'm a retired pipe welder in England and it's nice to see up close what goes on when welding, and I have watched some proper crap on here but it's a pleasure to watch a fellow welder who can weld cheers yours konrad
Great content and and great tutorial, I appreciate the explanation as you weld. Thanks
you are a great welder, with impressive technique.
Really well explained Abraham!
Great job pal iv worked on the 36inch gas main in the UK 2 welders 2assistans one down hill one up hill same time and the assistants cleaning up the welds and temp as we go then water and X-ray tests
Best welding channel on the Tubes, by far.
Lot to know !!!! GREAT video.Very impressed with your knowledge and skill.Sadly,I am not allowed to weld anymore due to heart device...really miss getting to build stuff !!!!!!
you Sir know what you are doing and i can tell you have the experience, a good eye and a steady hand as well
AB, that was a great vid! Thank you sir
Excellent video and explanation of the case.
We run multiple test up hill and especially down hill and we don't need another hand to control the remote, we set the temp and run the the test and pass it.
30 years at Columbia Gas Trans. we also had to pass a heavy wall for Compressor Storage Stations and Hot Tap for Stopple/Mueller taps on live lines.
Great job Ab! Learned a few things here. Always thought if you lived above the equator you weld up, living below equator you weld down...lol...sort of like the way a toilet swirls differently above or below the equator....lol...
Does the toilet really swirl different down there?

EXCELLENT VIDEO! GREAT WELDER!
you are a really good teacher. and you guys make great videos
You ain't going to weld tubes in a boiler downhill. Welded for over 40 years in the boilermakers union. But pipeliners weld downhill like you said.
Boliermaking interest me. I love going uphill so if boilermakers weld up then im all for it!
Awesome video it answered alot of questions
Respect that confidence son ! 💪🏻
I really enjoyed this video. Your process would make the prefect weld test because it covers both up and down with a variation of rods. Pass this test and you can pipe weld anywhere.
I had a freind at work who could tell you about the metal he was going to weld, what rods he was using, and why. This kid kinda reminds me of him.
That big blue 8010 arc looked very crispy 😍😍😍

3rd time watching this. Never gets old dog! Thank you!
The whole squad is a beast like a Voltron Weld Messiah.
Last I knew, get certified as a high pressure pipeline welder, you had to be able to pass a stress test on an overhead 8" steel high pressure pipe hanging overhead which requires both up and down hill and pushing and pulling a weld.
not sure about that .pressure vessels should be up hand, pipelines can be down hand , Oil Tanks should be up hand ( ASME standard)but most welders try to do down hand , ASME pipe weld test is mostly up hill,
My father was a welder but he could also do everything else, shear, layout, braking, weld and polish. He learned the trade at East New York Vocational High School. He started working in the late 1940s. In the beginning he welded the custom electrical panels they used in New York Buildings. When I was a teen he was working in custom kitchen equipment. Later he got certification to weld the piping in nuclear power plants. hen we first moved to Florida he was relining the insides of cement trucks. That was probably the nastiest job he ever had.
I worked with him as a helper before I was drafted. We'd go out and weld new ends on dish tables when a dish washing machine was being replaced. That meant Sunday night in the big hotels because that was the only time the kitchens were closed. He had a very good reputation and he was always getting calls from people wanting to hire him. He could design a kitchen and handle everything necessary. He even did synagogues with all the kosher requirements.
It's too bad he never saw videos lie this one. That was one fancy welding machine. All he had to work with was a 90 Amp Lincoln welding machine. His rod work looked liked he'd used a Heliarc machine. I never had to beat something straight after he finished. There was another welder who was known or his speed. He'd weld two pieces into a 90 degree dish table with clamps everywhere on it. When he was done I'd take all the clamps off and the table was warped from the high heat used. Then I'd beat it to straighten it out.
This instructor is a very good welder. That was a very pretty weld he did on the pipe. It made me think of my father.
I have to ask, are there special Kosher welding rods?
Keeping the puddle looking like perfect egg shape it will come out slick like snail snot everytime hoss
anyone who says you cant weld down hill has never worked pipeline its downhill every weld
Each company should have a welding procedure and it will tell you up hill or down hill and which rods to use and the diameter of the rod. It may be 1/8” for the bead and 5/32 for hot pass and what size to use for fill and cap. Usually it depends on pipe size and diameter which rod you use. The procedure will state the gap and lands and voltage and travel speed.
Astonished to see an American using a grinder with the guard on! One of the smarter guys.
Years ago, I witnessed an Spanish welder at work who was a pipeline veteran all over the world welding up a 10" T pipe joint.
He had a stick welder in each hand welding 2 joints uphill simultaneously.
Never seen anyone do that before or since, I was truly amazed. The weld quality was excellent as well.
I hope he was getting paid double $
That welder you used is crazy cool.
I’m very impressed good job Man
Enjoyed watching.Your very talented
Did a good job Enjoy the video I enjoy watching others do different things and learn things from others
I was taught either way can work. Going down hill depends on if you can "outrun" your pool so thockness and rod determines what you can do.
As long as you have a WPS to support downhill welding, and can pass the welder qual downhill, you qualify to "legally" weld downhill. Some codes allow you to qualify welders in uphill or downhill even if the procedure was taken uphill...
from a
from a coded welder of 45 years to another ( my specialty is TIG) beautiful welding mate
Fine job ! Your a great welder!
I wish I had that remote when I was pipe welding. That makes it so much easier. I could never remember my weld settings
That is a sweet feature.
Trimakasih bang atas penjelasan nya dan tehnik cara pengelasan nya
Excellent welding, and excellent video!
Its really about what direction the WPS calls for.
You're not always given a wps or even a standard. People that don't weld in shops all day run into the problem of thinking for themselves
@@ceazure7 i can only really tell you what my expierence is as a Union Pipefitter/Steamfitter. Im not ever given a WPS in the field, but every weld is inspected atleast visually by a weld inspector. That weld inspector has a WPS and will tell you what he wants to see. What the WPS and the code calls for.
There really shouldn't be any weld done where saftey is considered without a procedure.
If your out there guessing, shame on you, if its expierence great, you should know how to get the procedure..
I rarely ever weld in a shop! Chainfalls, grinders and torches. I make my own dogs and pushpulls, i never see alignment clamps!
@@jamieruggiero well I can also only speak from my experience as a piledriver. We also make our own dogs we deal with high-low and 1/2" gaps all day long. However, if I have to root a 3' vertical with a downhill pass to fill a gap without eating my bevels that's what I'm going to do. The wps doesn't call for a downhill root wherever that wps may be but that's what I'm gonna do to make it work and pass my inspections. My point is, sometimes you have to add aittle finesse. Your not wrong about the wps that's not what I'm saying. Wps are there for a reason all I'm saying is the new dudes in the industry should be coached to learn from their experiences not following a sheet of paper someone wrote that has never welded a day in their life.
@@ceazure7 i can't disagree with you. Im also a weld instructor and a CWI so i lean towards the do as i say not as i do.
When the need is there fix it and move on.

Loves from the Philippines, just start welding lessons, need morr practice but the materials are scarce and the available are shared with 40 students into 4 inverters. P. S can you showcase welding paterns, technique, what to do, what not to do, that teary eyes remedies... Etc
I removed a section of pipe done in 1933,it looked terrible, mostly spatter, rod was ancient, welding machines were just giant old generators,I cut coupons, bent them, they lost a 1/16th from erosion, they were done downhill, well they still passed after 50 yrs.of being in use at standard oil ,the inside top gets the most erosion if pipes arnt actually pressurized, they can have an air space, wish I would have had that machine, the sa250 with remote made thousands of welds.
Sir, the rod you use it's kobelco or yawata?
Is there a colorblind Ishihara eye test for welder applicants? What is the age limit for welder applicants? Thank you for the reply
nice. thanks you!
Uphill or downhill. It's all allowed within the weld procedure you come across
Yep. Totally.
excellent video, good job...
I thought the "1" in 6010, 7018, and even 8010 means it can weld all positions including vertical up and vertical down. I'm very new to welding, so are you talking more about the practicality of it?
all positions can mean vertical in general and not specify up or down. you need to do extra research into the rod characteristics for that extra information. eg 7018 shouldn't be used downhill due to the fluid slag profile meaning it will run down faster than you travel.
Excellent job BTW
