The black chicken comes from a breed called a "Silkie". It's feathers are white and it's skin is a grayish black colour. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the "Hippo" surprised me. Neat, tidy, well packaged food, tons of variety, nice wide aisles and lots of light. Most of the food is a bit less expensive than it is here in Ontario, Canada except the chips, Barilla, baked beans and sauce and they are about the same price. That was a lovely education, thanks.💛

Hema Fresh (盒马鲜生) is a mid-to-high-end supermarket chain in China. The fruits and vegetables it offers are organically certified and supplied from its exclusive farms. However, they are still much cheaper compared to those in the United States or Europe. It is comparable to the organic fruits and vegetables available at Marks & Spencer in the UK.

Generally the prices seem lower than the UK apart from some imported brands. The thing that surprised me was the quality and range on offer - much more than the UK, especially meat and fish. Also there seemed to be less processed foods and even some of the snacks were natural products. Its interesting that they also cook food instore - the closest thing to that in the UK is some of our farm shops that have restaurants. Overall, I would say that the Chinese have a much better diet than we do in the UK, comparing the range of food on offer.

Well, they have a population of 1.4 BILLION vs. 66.46 million for United Kingdom. So, their cullture is to buy food and cook it within 2 days. That is also why all the fish is also bougth fresh out of tank instead of frozen in the West. All over China you also have fresh "wet" meat markets where they slaughter mamals right there and that day to sell. From the days when “those who controlled raw milk controlled the market” to the current era of market saturation, the nation’s dairy farms are struggling to navigate a crisis that has persisted since early 2023. The downturn began with widespread reports of milk dumping and cattle slaughtering as farms attempted to manage unsustainable production levels. As the crisis drags on, more farms are being forced to consider the grim question: “Will we have to continue culling our herds?” The Roots of the Crisis The seeds of the current crisis were sown in 2019 when dairy companies significantly expanded their upstream production capacity, which came fully online two years later. Coupled with a rapid increase in milk yield per cow, this expansion has led to a persistent imbalance between supply and demand. Recently, the company has honored its purchase contracts without rejecting any shipments. However, this could change after the Spring Festival, when we might see a drop in collection in the second quarter.” Milk prices have been on a steady decline throughout 2024, with no signs of rebounding. Love following along your China series especially since l’m heading there next year! Are there convenient stores around everywhere like it is in Japan? I love convenient store culture hahah!
Honestly as a local grown up in Beijing, I don’t recommend Beijing as a place to experience family life. Maybe Guangdong or Shanghai is better. Because of most of the Beijing people they don’t enjoy life and live a fast pace life. Beijing is full of famous universities. Those Beijing local they are highly educated but live a tired life.
However, if you want to experience those ancient spiritual heritage, Beijing is the best place. There are a variety of performances like ancient dance dramas, Beijing opera. You can also experience many traditional handicrafts. But those are hidden in the normal streets, not well known even local people.
Hey , good evening from New Zealand , that was a eye opener , i was surprised as i did a cost comparison , pretty the much the same as here , apart from the avos , l.o.l they are very cheap here , love the vids, very neat seeing a different culture and stuff 🙂
I apologise. You are right. I was not looking at the corner of the screen to see the prices. It was late at night when I viewed it and I did not use full screen. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Keep up the good work.
盒马鲜生 is a relatively high-end grocery store. So fancier decorations, more services, better quality control of the goods, etc. and of course at higher prices. You saw, for example, the chicken with black skin, and that is a certain breed called silkie chicken which is considered to have certain value in terms of traditional Chinese medicine. Such chicken goes best with other ingredients of medical value like cordyceps militaris to make a soup, but people don't necessarily want to pay extra for it to make an everyday meal. It is common for a person to only buy certain items he/she prioritizes at a store like this and gets other items at stores that are more cost-effective. Additionally, Chinese can have much more exquisite discrimination between ingredients than the factory-standardized measures a lot of westerners are more used to. So, randomly picking an item can give you misleading idea about how grocery cost in China compare to in another country. By the way, kiwi fruits actually originates in China and there are domestic kiwi fruits being sold by lower price.
Yes, kiwi fruit is originally the Chinese Gooseberry. I don't think many ordinary Chinese people would be able to shop in this high-end store. I've been watching a lot of Chinese videos about the struggles of the population. Thousands barely get enough to eat.
That was fun seeing the food prices. Very much cheaper than here in New York. The bread loafs are so small there! Julia I love Your Blue 💙/White 🤍 Jacket With The Black 🖤 Trim. Could You please share where You purchased it? Western Upstate NY Here ❤ Thanks #MattJulia

That Australian wagyu beef would cost more than double in Australia and most likely those lobsters were imported into china. China ceased importing Australian lobster because of previous Australian prime minister being an idiot with the Chinese, anyway that was good because we could buy them even supermarkets had them but they were always frozen never fresh. The Chinese get the best and freshest produce, Australians get the left overs must be because we have a small population.

8% of people in the UK are lactose intolerant whereas the figure for China is 92%. In Russia it varies per republic but it's between 13% and 57%. That's probably why not much dairy products are drunk or eaten in China (and Asia in general).
The comparisons are always interesting .... Some of the beer is quite a bit cheaper .... I might have to fly from Australia to get some??? Thanks Matt and Julia, great insight.
I am also a beer lover. In China, the average price of 500ml domestic beer bought online is ¥5≈usd$0.7. Imported beer is almost X2-3, but if I buy online in my city, can deliver very cool beer to my home in 30 minutes. Welcome to Beijing!😊😊😊

Very interesting. Although everything was reasonably priced, I can see why street food is so convenient. Probably no more expensive than cooking yourself. I do wonder what the average income is though because Russian prices are super cheap, matching much smaller income. It’s all relative. We’re spoilt in that English is used so much in many countries, especially at airports and train stations. And now I see in supermarkets as well. Great shopping experience Ty 😊❤. Oh yeah, I agree with another post about the amount of plastic used 😮.
Hema is actually one of nicer supermarkets, people with low income won't go there. they have more affordable options, other supermarkets, convenience stores, local wet markets or bazaars, or nearby farmers would drive into the city and sell veges or fruits they grow in their gardens.

I think the local products will be cheaper than those in Western countries, but imported products will be expensive You can see even a midrange grocery store in China, there are so many choices.
In fact, non-frozen meat is generally only sold for one day, and after 7 p.m., there will be discounts for fresh and cooked food, and supermarkets will be cleared of goods. In addition, the reason why there are few people in the video is that when the blogger goes there, it should be working hours, and the crowd will be concentrated in the noon lunch and after work in the evening. In addition, China is used to online shopping, the Hema supermarket has its own ordering APP, you choose the goods you need on the APP, generally within 30 minutes can be delivered to the home (including seafood and other goods), the bag on the conveyor belt in the video is the sorting completed goods. I hope it was helpful.
80% of the orders in this supermarket come from the Internet. After placing an order from the mobile phone app, it can be delivered to your home in about 30 minutes. The delivery range is almost 30km centered on the supermarket, so most people shop directly at home.😂
Is it true that chinese supermarkets(or products in China) have consistent prices and they rarely change? Im asking because in American pricrs change often depending on inflation and i saw a tweet that products in China very rarely change in price.
Yes prices are quite stable because government controls not letting private companies to manipulate too much. Also there are giant state owned food companies to balance out when private owned food companies technically raise up prices.
The monthly salary of workers in ordinary factories is 800-1500 US dollars after tax, taxi drivers are about 1500 US dollars, couriers are about 1000-1500 US dollars, civil servants are about 2000 US dollars. Some large companies like Huawei pay 3000-20000 US dollars. China's salary is similar to that of Italy and Portugal in southern Europe.
I bet all the plastic packaging is from the covid era, where pre-packed food made the most sense. Prices seem about 50% lower than the US, except avocados and I bet beef is actually about the same.
I think you may have over-interpreted the plastic packaging, the supermarket carried out excessive plastic packaging, more in order to make the goods appear attractiv😂.
This supermarket is generally a small supermarket in China. 80% of their orders come from the Internet, and the distribution range is almost 50km around the supermarket. Although the area of this supermarket is not large, their products are generally organically certified, so it belongs to a medium and high-end supermarket in China. Usually, the price of this supermarket is 30%-50% higher than that of ordinary supermarkets. By the way, this supermarket and Alipay belong to the same company.
Where's everyone watching from today? 🙃🙌❤

So interesting!!!! Love all your videos 👍❤️❤️
I was just watching Julia on Season 5 of The Great British Baking show. Very neat to see her on there. I remember she told us a long time ago that she competed on it. It was nice to see her creations.
What a huge grocery store. I’d get lost and probably worn out after shopping there. 😂😂. Stay safe. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
At the deli meat counter, I know I must have heard you wrong LoL, I thought you said "Dog". Surely I heard that wrong?😆
Fresh market where you can fresh vegetables, fresh meats, chicken, fish, duck, pig meat, cow meat, etc, any kind of fresh fruits all at 1/2 price or 1/4 the price you see in a mega super market like this one. The taste of food cooked with fresh ingredients much much better than those packaged and refrigerated or frozen ones.
Hi guys great as always. What will you be doing for Christmas. As jo
I couldn’t be in that supermarket for 5 min, the music drives me crazy 😅
Love following along your China series especially since l’m heading there next year! Are there convenient stores around everywhere like it is in Japan? I love convenient store culture hahah!
Amazing! ❤️ Yea there are loooots of convenience stores, perhaps a little less than Japan, but still lots! ❤️🥰
@ cant wait for more vlogs! Forever a huge fan of yours!🥰
In Northeast USA, typically $5. a dozen regular eggs, $6. gallon milk and $4. loaf of sliced bread.
I apologise. You are right. I was not looking at the corner of the screen to see the prices. It was late at night when I viewed it and I did not use full screen. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Keep up the good work.
Chicken feet are also eaten in Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines where we have chicken feet BBQ or adobo.
Woww... what a difference from where i shop😮😂😂 definitely a awesome tour😎😎😎 thank you!!!
Unknown fruits = winter dates, what dried Chinese dates are made from
Ah amazing, thank you for letting us know! ❤️
Western Upstate NY Here ❤
Thanks #MattJulia
we hv this supermarket chain all over china, normally we just order on our phones, and have the groceries delivered to door within 30mins.
This was fun. I was surprised at some of the prices. Lower than local goods here in the US at times. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing…going to a supermarket when I am abroad is one of my favourite things to do…I bought 4 avocados today from sainsbobs for £1.40 !! Enjoy the rest of your week…Louise xxx
Don’t think your the only ones British fish goes to Spain, not many fishmongers left in UK. The EU want the fishing quotas…really hot topic…
@ You got Brexit stop complaining, I’m not complaining just trying to understand what goes on in the world
@@bec_r_r Not complaining, Not about Brexit…..the fishing catches have been sold to European countries for a century as the profit margins are higher. I live near some of the best protected waters in the UK but have to buy the products of that protection MY SENYDD insists on processed….Not Fresh….
Fascinating to know the prices in China... and it definitely confirms, for me anyway, that Australia is an expensive place to live..lol.
Chinese here🙌🏻 I think 盒马 is kind of expensive in China, and it only open in some big city for now. City where I live will have the first 盒马 in Jan,2025.
Definitely a great video with lots of info. Thanks for a great effort. I will be checking out more of your videos - and wondering how long you spent in China overall. US visa seems a bit restrictive for China.
great video. LOl that black chicken is too funny. Are you located in Haidian. you could also get cheaper groceries and more variety from taboo or pingduoduo I my opinion
Ah okay, thank you for the clarification 🥰❤️
Watching from beautiful British Columbia, Canada. 🇨🇦 Very fascinating watching your adventures.
8% of people in the UK are lactose intolerant whereas the figure for China is 92%. In Russia it varies per republic but it's between 13% and 57%. That's probably why not much dairy products are drunk or eaten in China (and Asia in general).
where did you get that 92% figure from? Completely outrageous!
Not true, eveyone i know drink coffee with milk in China.
Welcome to Beijing!😊😊😊
love the prices puts things in context
The live fish (etc) selection is pretty damned good. And that conveyor system is pretty sweet. My local shop (major retailer) has 1/10th the live selection and no fancy belt system ;)
Wow ,That supermarket was incredible.I live in the US and I've never seen anything like this.
There is one supermarket brand in the US, Wegmans, that has in-store dining areas. I used to live in Rochester, NY for a few months and I loved the Wegmans there. But the variety shown in this video is unmatched even by Wegmans.
the black chicken is called wuji which means black chicken literally, and it is considered more nutrious and expensive than the common chicken.
Interesting, thank you! ❤️
It's mostly reserved for women.
Glad to see you back. I'll watch your video now.
Thank you so much ❤️🙏🏼
In Australia it is common to find supermarkets inside shopping malls.
That black chicken also called Silkie Chicken. They have black skin.
Everything looks great and very affordable.
have you tried the opposite version of hot pot called ma la tong, of which u pick the ingredients (as many as u want) and someone cooks it for u
Actually, the general prices in Hema(Hippo) is more expensive than the same goods in normal supermarket.
can't believe these prices! At the cheapest grocery store where i live (NE MN south of CA border, I paid $5 for 12 plain white eggs, lobster was advertised as $39 a pound for New Years Eve, $2.50 pound ($5 a kilo) for the tomatoes that were pointed out, ....
great video
This is totally off topic but I'd love to know just how long Matt's hair is! LOL.
Hahaha, to the shoulders at the moment 😁❤️
Rice wine is usually very delicious - recommended
We will try! 🥰
In Canberra, Australia most supermarkets are in shopping centres. Very normal from my perspective.
Supermarket in shopping centres are common in Australia
Lobster price is depending on the import price
Ah okay thanks ❤️
Greetings from Ireland. Prices are even cheaper then here. Did u buy something eventually?
If I remember it correctly, Mainland China is the biggest alcohol consuming region in the world, more than three times bigger than the second, so of course you can find all kinds of imported alcoholic products. China also imports and consumes huge amount of all kinds of products, the world's biggest market to most industries, but except cheese and olive oil I guess. lol
Interesting, never knew, we would have guess somewhere in Eastern Europe for alcohol consumption to be honest. Thanks for the fact ❤️
@@MattandJulia Per capita, could be Belarus, but hey, no one beats 1.4 billions people as whole. Haha.
Yes,we can buy almost all the western alcohol in China,my favorite brands here:

Blended Scotch Whisky:Compass Box/Dewar's/TBWC
American Bourbon whiskey:Booker's/Elijah Craig/Michter's
American Rye Whiskey:Pikesville/Ragtime
Rum:Plantation/Foursquare

Very good, it is very useful for me to make the shopping list for next September! Love to both of you!!
Haha, for sure! 😏😉 Lots of love to you too! ❤️
Lots of shopping ideas when we have a picnic in Beijing! See you soon!
Wow! These grocery prices are cheaper than our discount groceries!
This Hema supermarket is still a mid-sized supermarket and is located in a mall. The outside market will be 30% cheaper.😅
Very educational and interesting video, thanks for sharing with us! You peaked my interest, I was born and raised in Los Angeles , CA and the majority of our avocados come from CAli, then Mexico, then Peru! The majority of avocados in the EU and the UK are imported from Peru, then Columbia. Interesting! Don’t you miss not being at home during the Christmas and New Years holidays?? I noticed…..there’s not a bauble, advent calendar, or shopping district decorated with lights. I would miss all of this terribly! ☹️Take care of yourselves, & Happy Holidays! 🥳🎄🚫🦃🌮🌯🍪🍪🍩🍿🍿🧀🧀🧀🥖☹️
Hi! I am a fan of your China. Can you add subtitles to the video you released?
Love the super market tours!
$15 USD FOR A LOBSTER?????? What they grow lobsters on trees in China? What the hell.... Give me that price NOW!!
If you love seafood, going to China or Asia will give u a fat belly
It is often below $15 per lb here in CA, and sometimes 9.99 per lb.
@@qilu2004 $15 USD for the whole lobster
19.58- i think those are chinese jujube fruit(Ziziphus jujuba)
The black chicken is Sumatra Chicken... a fighting bird😊
black chicken is a special type of chicken believed to have better flavor and nutrition
I think the local products will be cheaper than those in Western countries, but imported products will be expensive
You can see even a midrange grocery store in China, there are so many choices.
Lobstah in New England range around 10 to 14 dollars per pound. What was that spirit that cost 1000?🇬🇧🇺🇸
Do they sell all that meat, how long does it stay ion the shelf? Didn’t see many people shopping.
If I lived in Beijing, I’d be eating roast duck and hoisin sauce rolls 8 days a week.
What about your doctor check-up per year and dental visit in China?
Not really sure what you mean. We never had yearly doctor check ups when we lived full time in the UK 😁 Dentistry we have done in Turkey ❤️
Also there are giant state owned food companies to balance out when private owned food companies technically raise up prices.
the beer 1/3 rd cheeper become a drunkard on the cheep, (idaho) .
£1.40 for 6 beers? (packs bags to live in china).
Hi guys! From New Orleans, La in the states. Was wondering if your home base is still in Turkey?
Youre divine, came to Serbia surprise
We can’t wait to return to Serbia 🇷🇸❤️
yeah, but what are the wages? These prices could be quite high if the wages are small.
China's salary is similar to that of Italy and Portugal in southern Europe.
people with small wage wont go that supermarket. Hema is actually one of the nicer supermarkets.
Don't buy beautifully packaged food in Chinese supermarkets, and don't buy imported food, which is usually at least X2 expensive.😅😅😅
That is a "mid-size" supermarket? It looks gigantic! The delivery system is jaw dropping, too.
