The black chicken comes from a breed called a "Silkie". It's feathers are white and it's skin is a grayish black colour. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the "Hippo" surprised me. Neat, tidy, well packaged food, tons of variety, nice wide aisles and lots of light. Most of the food is a bit less expensive than it is here in Ontario, Canada except the chips, Barilla, baked beans and sauce and they are about the same price. That was a lovely education, thanks.💛

Beijing is a "first-tier city" and capital of China. So, the prices are like what Washington DC or Manhattan prices are in USA. Only Shanghai and parts of Shenzhen would have higher prices.
But, if you go anywhere else in China to like the 2nd, 3rd or 4th tier cities, the prices for restaurant food is astoundingly low. There are many videos on UA-cam about this.

Hema Fresh (盒马鲜生) is a mid-to-high-end supermarket chain in China. The fruits and vegetables it offers are organically certified and supplied from its exclusive farms. However, they are still much cheaper compared to those in the United States or Europe. It is comparable to the organic fruits and vegetables available at Marks & Spencer in the UK.

Generally the prices seem lower than the UK apart from some imported brands.
The thing that surprised me was the quality and range on offer - much more than the UK, especially meat and fish.
Also there seemed to be less processed foods and even some of the snacks were natural products.
Its interesting that they also cook food instore - the closest thing to that in the UK is some of our farm shops that have restaurants.
Overall, I would say that the Chinese have a much better diet than we do in the UK, comparing the range of food on offer.

Well, they have a population of 1.4 BILLION vs. 66.46 million for United Kingdom. That is a HUGE HUGE HUGE differential for purchaseing in bulk to get better prices and variety
Remember before 1979, it was close to impossbile to find refrigerators in China as they wre so poor and had no electricity to the home back then. So, their cullture is to buy food and cook it within 2 days. That is also why all the fish is also bougth fresh out of tank instead of frozen in the West. All over China you also have fresh "wet" meat markets where they slaughter mamals right there and that day to sell. That is why the OVID-19 virus was abled to spread in the wet meat market in Wuhan city.

This is very informing. Lot of their prices are lower than here in the states for some of their foods. I wonder why they wrap the food in a net like the apples and other goodies? I love that they can recook your food for you. As you said to eat there or to take with you. Saves time for cooking at home. And some people live in very small apartments in China so having to save from cooking helps them out big time. I wish stores did this here in the states. Wow! there milk is way less than here in the states. For a gallon here you pay as high s 5 dollars at places for regular milk. Anything else is even more expensive. Prices here went up for bread, milk, and eggs. Way higher than it should. This is very informing. Thank you both for showing us and teaching us China's prices in food markets. Be safe stay warm!

China’s Dairy Industry Faces Continued Challenges Amid Raw Milk Oversupply
China’s dairy industry is grappling with significant challenges as a prolonged oversupply of raw milk continues to drive prices down. Many dairy farm owners report that bulk milk prices recently fell to just over 1 yuan per kilogram, underscoring the severity of the situation.
From the days when “those who controlled raw milk controlled the market” to the current era of market saturation, the nation’s dairy farms are struggling to navigate a crisis that has persisted since early 2023. The downturn began with widespread reports of milk dumping and cattle slaughtering as farms attempted to manage unsustainable production levels. As the crisis drags on, more farms are being forced to consider the grim question: “Will we have to continue culling our herds?”
      The Roots of the Crisis
The seeds of the current crisis were sown in 2019 when dairy companies significantly expanded their upstream production capacity, which came fully online two years later. Coupled with a rapid increase in milk yield per cow, this expansion has led to a persistent imbalance between supply and demand. As a result, raw milk prices have dropped sharply, leaving many dairy farms on the brink of financial collapse.
Industry experts suggest that recovery hinges on reducing the number of dairy cows and boosting milk powder consumption. Although the growth in raw milk production has slowed somewhat, prices are not expected to stabilize until at least the second quarter of 2025.
      The Financial Toll of Oversupply
“The current raw milk price doesn’t even cover production costs,” said Zhang Ming, a production manager at a dairy farm in northern China. “The latest price is only 2.6 yuan per kilogram, but feeding costs alone average 2.2 yuan per kilogram. When you add fixed costs like land, the total cost climbs to around 3.2 to 3.5 yuan per kilogram.”
Xu Ping, a supplier to a leading dairy company, described a slightly better situation. “We’re still operating at a loss, but we can sell milk for over 3 yuan per kilogram. Recently, the company has honored its purchase contracts without rejecting any shipments. However, this could change after the Spring Festival, when we might see a drop in collection in the second quarter.”
Milk prices have been on a steady decline throughout 2024, with no signs of rebounding. The price of raw milk has fallen by more than 28% from a peak of 4.38 yuan per kilogram in 2021 to just 3.14 yuan by the end of September 2024.

For those curious about century eggs:
Basically, century eggs are duck eggs wrapped in an alkaline substance, such as wood ash or quicklime, and then pickled for several weeks with spices like tea leaves.
Because of the alkaline substance, they taste slightly bitter and have a faint sulphur odor, so not everyone can eat them, especially without seasoning.
As for why they are called "century eggs" in English, it seems to be a marketing tactic to attract attention.
Chinese TV shows also like to present them as an dark dish for Foreigners to try. For example, Edward James Stafford and Bear Grylls have both been invited to eat them. Without any seasoning, the taste is likely to be off-putting for many.

盒马鲜生 is a relatively high-end grocery store. So fancier decorations, more services, better quality control of the goods, etc. and of course at higher prices. You saw, for example, the chicken with black skin, and that is a certain breed called silkie chicken which is considered to have certain value in terms of traditional Chinese medicine. Such chicken goes best with other ingredients of medical value like cordyceps militaris to make a soup, but people don't necessarily want to pay extra for it to make an everyday meal. It is common for a person to only buy certain items he/she prioritizes at a store like this and gets other items at stores that are more cost-effective. Additionally, Chinese can have much more exquisite discrimination between ingredients than the factory-standardized measures a lot of westerners are more used to. So, randomly picking an item can give you misleading idea about how grocery cost in China compare to in another country. By the way, kiwi fruits actually originates in China and there are domestic kiwi fruits being sold by lower price.

    • @cordeliav3055

I do wonder what the average income is though because Russian prices are super cheap, matching much smaller income. It’s all relative. In fact, non-frozen meat is generally only sold for one day, and after 7 p.m., there will be discounts for fresh and cooked food, and supermarkets will be cleared of goods. In addition, the reason why there are few people in the video is that when the blogger goes there, it should be working hours, and the crowd will be concentrated in the noon lunch and after work in the evening. In addition, China is used to online shopping, the Hema supermarket has its own ordering APP, you choose the goods you need on the APP, generally within 30 minutes can be delivered to the home (including seafood and other goods), the bag on the conveyor belt in the video is the sorting completed goods. I hope it was helpful.

This supermarket is generally a small supermarket in China. 80% of their orders come from the Internet, and the distribution range is almost 50km around the supermarket. Although the area of this supermarket is not large, their products are generally organically certified, so it belongs to a medium and high-end supermarket in China. Usually, the price of this supermarket is 30%-50% higher than that of ordinary supermarkets. By the way, this supermarket and Alipay belong to the same company.
