Chongqing has a heavy history during the WW2, It was literally flattened by the Japanese. You ask any Chinese, and they will tell you how horrific that time was. However that part of the history is not known to the world, and the Chinese don't have the enthusiasm to make loads of "Hollywood" movies to spread the stories. The people of Chongqing are so open and "Hot" like their food preferences. They thrived from the past and are still making the best of life.
Yes. They also contributed the most number of manpower to the resistance force. About 80% of the original inhabitants perished by the end of the war. The area was repopulated by migrants from outside the area.
That's really sad. And we did the same thing to Japan with atomic bombs. War is a vicious cycle, and all of us are just pawns for the rich to try and persuade hate against others
I’ve seen many clips of cities in China, but this one is definitely one of the most impressive! The video itself is stunning, the girl giving the tour is fantastic, and of course, you (Drew) really brought everything together. It was the perfect combo of amazingness!

China is an amazing country and its people are wonderful. I have been there many times but there is so much more to explore. Most westerners don't know about Chongqing because our western media have been shutting us off completely or projecting China negatively. Now, it is visa free to visit China from many countries, so go there and see how exciting it is.
I visited Chongqing way back in 1992 on the way to Tibet. I was fresh out of college, teaching in Taiwan, and backpacking through Asia and Europe (92 and 94). Back then, Chongqing and other Chinese cities looked nothing like they do now. Even Beijing was grey, sooty, and mostly ugly. The pace of urbanization and modernization since then is mindblowing 🤯
the country has double digital growth during the past 30 years which means for every 7 years, the GDP is double, the infrastructure could be quite different for every 7 years. I'm living in Shenzhen another mega city in China. Shenzhen has the 1st metro line in 2004, now Shenzhen has more than 500km long subway and more than 15 lines already only after 20 years.
@FrankZhang-pj9nn Good points! I dk your age, but 30 years ago the last time I was in Shenzhen in '94, it was a small, polluted, industrial looking city. Now from what I've seen on UA-cam, it looks even nicer than much of Hong Kong. I hope you like living there.
@@DashingPartyCrasher you definitely should visit Shenzhen again. now the air quality in Shenzhen is one of the top 5 best in China. it has more than 1000 parks. yes. I was in Shenzhen from 2002, I'm the witness of the city development.
I live in the US. Where I live (a well-known big city), mostly chain restaurants are scattered along long stretches of streets, with little to marvel at. Many concrete buildings, and no community. People don't really walk here. You either get in a car, or some other means, from A to B and back. To get a fraction of the feeling of what I'm gathering from Chongqing, your best bet is a multi-level shopping plaza (if it still exists and hasn't become a ghost mall.) There is a reason people feel so alone and disconnected here. Because we are. Everything is so stretched out, so far away and few options of places we can gather together the way we see in the city Chongqing. The income inequality keeps people trapped from car to job, job to home with little opportunity to walk among fellow citizens to enjoy some street food. Hurts that when people think of the US, their first thought is gun violence. We need to do better.
Actually the whole sentence they said is a popular joke on internet: "Land of free, free of shooting". Young people think it's wild and crazy, with no negative meaning.
My favourite Ashkenazi Jew! I love your guide also. She is so friendly and entertaining, and her English skills are superb as well. My friend and fellow UA-camr Francois Williams has been living in that city for a while, and he has invited me to go there. I love the place!
Awesome video! I had heard of Chongqing before this but seeing it from a local perspective was amazing! Very very unique! The gentlemen at end cracked me up! They look like they were a lot of fun!
Here is a misunderstanding of Chongqing's population. It's a province level city, a lot of suburban and rural areas are administrated under the tile of Chongqing "CITY", but the urban population is aroud 10 million, which means Chongqing city itself is actually smaller than Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen
I’ve never heard of that city but the people seem really welcoming and friendly. I would totally visit there over Hong Kong ….there seems to be a lot to experience too
I recommend Shenzhen if you go to Hong Kong. HongKong people usually go to Shenzhen during the weekend because of the lower price and better quality. But fewer Shenzhen people can speak English.
@cool_things_collection I recommend Taiwan where people actually have a voice and don't get solitary confinement because they support freedom of speech (Jimmy Lai)
My favourite city too. We first visited in December 2023. Love the city so much we brought my brother and his wife in April 2024. Weather a little too warm for me, though it was only in high 20s. In Chongqing you need to walk to really see the city. Love the people, the food, especially its 小面 or small noodles, its architecture, the cleanliness, etc. We intend to make an annual pilgrimage to Chonging, either in March or December of each year.
Thanks for covering this city, Drew! I was really curious when I saw your new upload and now I can't stop searching about the architectural history of Chongqing! It was really interesting and at the same time mesmerizing :)

I believe this is the first time I’ve seen a large city with friendly residents, unlike New York City where I live, where everyone appears mad. Your guide is incredibly comfortable in front of the camera. She has such a friendly and beautiful demeanor.
As an autistic adult, growing up i loved learning about different countries and no one believed me that there was a city called Chongqing. But then again, im Irish ao the idea of a city with such a large population seemed far fetched to them
😮 OMG 😳... Quite fascinating and intriguing city...never knew it existed...thank you so much Drew for all the content you've been showing us 👏...much love from 🇿🇦💯....
Check the AQI and you will find the city's air quality is pretty good actually. Chongqing is called the "fog city" because it is built in the mountains so that steamy air lingers and does not dissipate. Those are NOT smog as you don't see anyone - locals or tourists alike - wear an air pollution face mask.
they are not wearing masks because they are used to a lifetime of air pollution in China that they are used to it. they die younger because of it and have numerous respiratory issues and die from lung cancers, etc at higher rates. but we are not supposed to talk about that during this propaganda video
I must confess, I had never heard of this place. I'd heard of Shanghai (which I thought was China's biggest city), Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, but not this place. Thanks for sharing.
This was a lovely video, and the more I learn about Chonqing the more incredible it seems to me! If there's any chance you see this, Drew, I've always wondered how you meet the local people in your videos? You seem to have some random friend in every country who shoots the whole video with you?
I remember when I was a kid in school and learning how big (and important) NYC was. Then when I was older, I discovered that China has a billion+ population and has multiple cities that are as big or bigger than NYC. Crazy!

There's a labeling error. The thing they're calling a "city" is the size of some US states. It's as if the state of New York were officially called "New York City" and the actual city were simply called "New York". The province-like area, which is labeled as a city, may have 32M. But that region contains many cities, you can see various dots on the map, one of those dots is also called Chongqing, which is only a fraction of the total.
@@wkrp01 Actually in China, municipalities are treated as cities, like BJ, SH, TJ and CQ, they are all governed by mayors, not governors. The difference is that these mayors report directly to Central Government. In fact you can check that most cities in China has huge area.
@@DDDrumpf It depends on whether we're speaking English English or Chinese English. On the map, you see a large thing called "Chongqing" with many dots inside of it. One of those dots also has the name "Chongqing". In Chinese English, "city" refers to the large thing. In English English, "city" refers to the small thing (the one that's shows on the map as a dot and is also labeled as "Chongqing").

I've heard of Chongqing before and yes, this is actually one of my bucket-list places to visit in the world!! Where else can you find that so-called "5D" city and a train station ramming right into a building, while also being beautiful in other ways?
Probably Chongqing has been overlooked since most people are focused on Beijing and Shanghai and don’t realize that China has many more cities with millions of people.
That's amazing, Drew! I'd love to visit there one day! I've been to Beijing, but only during a 7-hour layover when traveling from Cambodia to the Czech Republic. It would be awesome to spend some time in China and travel around. Chongqing seems like a fun and an awe-inspiring place. 👍
20:15 I get your point about people looking at their screens instead of enjoying the views and i agree but also like you said before, most of those people are locals, they see those places every single day, so for them it's nothing really special anymore. Where i'm from (luxembourg), like people come here and they go to certain places and are amazed by it and take tons of pictures but for me i'll just be like "yeah ok"
In qualsiasi posto anche se lo vedi milioni di volte, alla fine scopri sempre qualcosa di nuovo. Se invece scatti solo foto lo fai per mostrarti agli altri e perdi di vista la bellezza e la novità stessa delle cose.
That's really not true. US has some bad areas, but no one will actually harm you like that in 99.9% of the country. Don't let the Internet rot your brain
im going as a solo traveler to china in march next year and am very excited to visit chongqing! love the fact you bring a light on these cities as they are perceived so negatively in western media so its good to watch real sources of information rather than propaganda 😂 keep up the good work!
No, the CCP government is perceived negatively due to its own behavior towards its own people and toward neighboring countries. The "western media" is open and allowed to discuss whereas you are not in China.
Drew reacted to the guy's comment about enjoy seeing the beautiful ladies in Chongqing when asked what he likes about Chongqing. The answer seemed out of context but there is a cliche in China: The Xichuan province, where Chongqing resides, is said to have the most beautiful ladies in all of China
That's a cool question! There are some really remote places around the world that not many people visit. For example, Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean is known as one of the most isolated inhabited islands. There's also Pitcairn Island in the Pacific, which has a very small population. Closer to home, there are probably some hidden gems in Minnesota that not many people know about.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: People say that giant pandas look yellow, but it's actually because they get dirty while sitting, rolling, or playing on the ground, which is normal. There is a difference between the aesthetics of animals and humans. For example, during the mating season, male giant pandas will specifically coat themselves with mud. So the yellowish color of giant pandas usually appears on their backs and buttocks.
We didn't do anything to China
Japanese government lies to this history but you can find all the evidence in countless museums in China
The same way claiming there is no genocide in Gaza
That's really sad. And we did the same thing to Japan with atomic bombs. War is a vicious cycle, and all of us are just pawns for the rich to try and persuade hate against others

我们自己都觉得快😂日新月异
the country has double digital growth during the past 30 years which means for every 7 years, the GDP is double, the infrastructure could be quite different for every 7 years.
Thank you for sharing my country. I have been to ChongQing 6 years ago. It really an unforgettable trip.
Young people think it's wild and crazy, with no negative meaning.
chongqing has a density of less than 450/sq km, it’s pretty spread out.

In wintertime in China, it is the best time to experience ice and cold in Harbin. That is the city truly rare foreigners ever heard of.

@@DDDrumpf Yes, of course I know that already. It doesn't change what I said.
