In switching to the '22 Porsche Panamera, there is no comparison. It's a Porsche. It has that rock-solid luxury feel that is appropriate for a $100-$250K vehicle. It is an engaging vehicle, one that has precise driving and sweet exhausts. It's a car meant for driving. You go on their configuration page and option it out to your hearts (and wallet) extent. The Mercedes, Audi, etc., they are meant for comfort. Yes they serve as status symbols, but they're meant for chauffeuring. So much cost, and effort, is put into the back seats, isolation. Press a button and all the blinds come down, isolating yourself from noise, society as you comfortably get a massage and stretch your legs. In the Porsche, the driver can have fun when they want, and then when hauling around kids, family, whatever, have it be a normal luxurious upscale car.

I miss "Full HD, full screen, and full length... Let's go!" ... That aside, I definitely would have expected you to go with the Porsche before I clicked on the video, but I can see how the S Class is better at what it does best than the Panamera. Of course we would all take a Porsche 911 or 718 over a "sports car" Mercedes... but for luxury, Mercedes wins.

Hello. I'm a Korean. In Korea, the channel is being introduced under the name of AutoSense. But waiting for the translated version is dizzying, so I ran like this. haha !
If there's only one thing Corona has done well, it's brought us all over the world closer. Now I see good content like this every day as if it were a meal. ㅋ
This video seems to be of great help to those who are conflicted between the Panamera and the S-Class, but it makes them fall into trouble again. Because both are attractive.
After many conflicts, now I want to give the S-Class a victory. This is because the S-Class is a full-change model. Of course, if you consider the rear seats first, it goes without saying that it is overwhelmingly superior. It doesn't even need to appear until the Maybach version. This is because the Panamera long body is the same size as the S-Class short body model. I got help from Google Translate, so please forgive me if it's a bit strange. sorry ^^

From NYC. Revisiting your review from 1 year ago. Great comparison. I sat in a friend's Cayenne SUV and the seat was comfortable. I read the Pana's seat was firmer. A BAD habit from manufacturers, thinking sportier seats SHOULD be stiffer. NO. This got started because true race cars strip out any weight, including padding. But the Pana is GT - Grand Touring. Thank you for the real world review.

Great job on this Thomas. I have to say I was surprised to see the amount of piano black plastic in both of these flagship vehicles considering something like a Genesis G80 have figured out how to have no piano black plastic. The touch capacitive buttons in the S Class would drive me up a wall. Honestly not a fan of either of these offerings but would go Panamera if it had to be one or the other.

Great review as always. But I actually dont understand how the MB interior layout is more "evolved" either.. as you called it.. To me it has devolved. They have removed important things..
How is that a step forward in any way? I will never understand how just slapping 2 iPads on a dash is somehow a step forward. I can glue a big screen on the dash on any old car too.. It doesnt look good.
Touch screens are used where there is not enough space for all the real buttons you would need. Its a compromise. But no one would replace their computer keyboard with some touch variant just because its more "modern"...

@@IOT4747 I havent felt the materials in either one of them. But if it resembles the E or C class its a catastrophe compared to old MBs.
Design/layout wise its a huge step backwards compared to the old one. They removed things.. and then just slapped 2 screens on the dash.
      Looks ridiculous.
The lighting is cool, sure. But that's just for show. Has little real value. Might be fun the first weeks. Until you have impressed all you friends with it. Then you will probably turn it off. Or at least turn it dim yellowish if that's even possible..

Not true. The infotainment systems of the cars have pretty much no distraction functions. And if there's something, like an internet browser for example, they are usually disabled when the car is in motion. Comparing it to a smartphone is absurd.

    • @emiliospowerballer1441

On top of that. In my country, if you are using your smartphone calling someone during driving, its illegal and you have to pay a fine. But if you call someone from the screen of your car, its fine. Looking at your cars screen isnt illegal, but looking at your smartphone screen is illegal. Either automobile manufacturers are smart, or the people who make the law are dumb.

I would disagree owning a '22 Porsche. The S was great if huge tablets and comfy seats is your thing. If you want a 911-oriented sports sedan. No comparison to having sports-car dials, beautiful 911-type driving dynamics, turning that key and hearing the car roar to life. If you want comfy and isolated outside, go Mercedes. If you're a bit more sport-oriented at heart, yet want all the luxury of an executive car, go Porsche. I have no doubt I'll go Mercedes when I'm 60's+ but I have many years until that point.

I recently test drove the ID4 and I understand the appeal of the capacitive buttons. They do (potentially) provide more flexibility, especially with VW's sliding feature. They're also more likely to last longer. Buttons and knobs wear out, especially if you (or your children) touch things with messy hands. These capacitive buttons, however, will practically last forever. However Merc's glitchy/faulty buttons shown in this video are inexcusable.

This review helped me decide to stay with the Sport Turismo version of the Panamera I have been planning to order when there is an available allocation in a few months. I had been thinking of instead going with the similarly priced Panamera Executive for its much better rear seat accommodations. This video reminded me that my priority is the best driving experience. The 14-way adjustable front seats were very comfortable during a test drive and I hope they will be similarly comfortable on long trips. I don't find the S-class Mercedes at all appealing due to it's clownish interior. Past Mercedes I've owned attracted excess and sometimes very negative attention. I doubt that many people will even know what a Panamera is.

@@pozytywniezakrecony151 Well in terms of pricing and interior accommodations, the Panamera in this video is more similar to the Mercedes in this video. The CLS is substantially smaller and has much less rear legroom than a Panamera LWB. I decided not to order a Panamera when I got an allocation in August 2022 due to parts shortages that likely would have affected my build. I instead bought a similarly equipped in-stock Cayenne which has proven to be more practical than a Panamera.

Nice video very detailed. The S Class I would take home because it fullfill the most in terms of luxury and innovation. Its interior is way ahead of any other car on the market. The Panamera is a nice car but it is more E class than S class. The interior feels much older. What I don't like about its interior is the plastic part between the door panel the upper part of the bench. That is very cheap. Maybe the next Comparison would be S73 e vs Panamera Turbo S E hybrid.

I bought a Panamera. Porsche>Mercedes in driving dynamics, prestige, speed, driving experience. Mercedes>Porsche in comfort, luxury, cloud-like, relaxation. That's why they're such great chauffeur cars. If you want in the drivers seat, there really is just one choice in the segment for sports-car level fun which is Porsche. Both BMW and Mercedes caters to everyone (c/3, e/5, s/7), whereas Porsche generally caters to the $100K+ exclusively in their cars. They integrate 911 DNA into the Panamera, and it's a fun experience from first turning the "key", no push-buttons here.

Fantastic and comprehensive review. My heart says Porsche but my head says Mercedes. Seems like Porsche have made a very basic error with the seats, and no matter how good it drives, ultimately it's a deal breaker. I'm not entirely convinced by the new lay out of the Mercedes interior, just seems that the technology isn't functioning as it should. Maybe the 7 series is the way to go?

You hit the nail on the head holding Mercedes to the fire on the Haptic Touch sensing buttons completely missing the mark. It is unacceptable at this price point for you to hit a button like you did 8 times to get it to do what you wanted which should have happened on your first try without ever thinking about it again. I hope they bring back some real buttons and switches to round out this great product. Excellent comparison.

I guess most people would go for the Porsche Panamera, if they have the budget to buy only one of these two cars for themselves or their family of up to four people in total. This is because both sedans at a similarly price, Porsche is a tier higher in terms of rarity and exoticness (eg the cheapest Merc is an A Class but the cheapest Porsche is a Macan which is significantly more expensive, meaning there are more people out there owning a Merc branded car than those owning a Porsche branded car). Also, Merc S Class is known for its luxuriousness and driving/seating comfort. Porsche cars are known for their performance and speed, so it gives you more bragging rights when you drive a Porsche, eg I can go faster than you, etc. And when you spend that much money on a car, you want to stand out and have that edge over those cars owned by your friends and relatives. Porsche Panamera can give you more of that than Merc S, while not sacrificing too much luxuriousness and practicality.

Vielen Dank!

Panamera was my dream car ever. Test drove a 2021 fully optioned one and the overall experience doesn’t even get close to the 21 s class. The ride was bumpy even though it was on 19 inches (my 21 530e is on 20 and the suspension handles potholes better), and there’s a surprising amount of road noise coming into the cabin (better than my 5 series, but not even close to the s class).
Yeah, the performance is there, but if you’re like me and don’t often go over speed limit there’s no need for that ( I also wouldn’t take it to the track more than once a year, so for me comfort and features > performance).
So disappointed, my dream car turned out to be just…..average.
Going from my 5 series into the panamera it didn’t feel like a 70k upgrade (sticker price for panamera was 140k).
However going from it to the s class it felt like a much higher upgrade than the 58k diff in price (s class was priced at 128k)
