Great video, and very informative. I quibble with the idea that most movies are 2.35:1. In theaters, movies are a mix of 2:35:1 and 1.85:1. In the past couple of months I've watched Alien, which is 2.35; Aliens, which is 1.85; and The Wizard of Oz, which is a nearly square 1.33:1. Beautiful Theater setup, Right now i have a unfinished basement and am going to be using your set up as a guide to complete mine just with some of my finishing touches. Very clean i love it.
Great video. I'm looking to get the same projector and am a bit conflicted about which screen to get. The room is light controlled, but has white walls. It seems I have to choose between the risk of hot spots, low brightness or poor black levels. PS. IMO the ambilight needs to go. It may add a sense of immersion on a small TV, but it doesn't do anything good for a 135" screen.
This was a great video. If you ever revisit the topic, maybe cover black screens as well! We custom built a 45”x80” frame with black projector fabric from Rose Brand. We tried out two blacks and a gray, and ended up with Boost 122 IFR. It’s a bit wooly, like duvatyn, but it gave us an analog dithering that renders everything very film-like, and is super ALR for daytime viewing.
I would just like to say thank you your video was a great help. I have recently upgraded to a projector and now was looking at getting a better screen as I wasn’t too happy with the cheap one I got and after watching your video. I think I have all the info I need. Thanks
I was thinking of a projector for a home theater as we finish our basement. I've read reviews and was going to buy a screen and projector based on the few things I've read. Your videos have been extremely helpful. In fact I've changed course on what I thought would be our best options. You may have saved me a considerable amount of time and money as well. I considered them but they are far inferior to individually addressable LEDs since they light up in large chunks and are incredibly expensive for a big screen. This whole project cost me less than $300
@@ChrisMajestic Chris can you talk about the project that you used? I've seen Philips hue system but it's expensive and I would love an alternative that you think is better and cheaper.
Question for those with short throw projectors. How difficult is it keeping the unit or table it sits on clean? Or how often does it get accidentally out of place?
I keep the projector of a table, no issues at all, the projector won't Move u less touched by someone, and of course you have remote control so need to touch the projector an in the first place, adjusting the projector is wayyyyy tooooo simple
I tried to find all over the internet for nuances in the Projector screen from Elite screens and now I think this would be the best place to ask this question. I am going to install Ultra short throw projector (specifically Optoma CinemaX P2 Smart 4K HDR UHD Laser); it's 3000 lumen. I don't have Ceiling light to be bothered about but I have a South-facing bright sunlight light entering window (which I don't want to completely black-out, but will use blind and curtain) which is located on the right side of my projector and a table lamp about (at a height of 1.3m) just beside the sitting area. Considering the Samsung Premiere Ultra-Short throw or the Optima. ALR screen? Also will you be reviewing the Samsung? Would love some feedback prior to purchasing
I'm a big Samsung user. I'm talking appliances, cell phones, TV, ect.. I'm intrigued by the projector but if the differences are minuscule, I'll probably go with the black Vava. The black works much better with my setup

Chris such a powerful video. Pls what will you recommend for a church, we plan on getting a projector dispay in 4k on out backdrop can't afford an led screen. Pls what projector and screen can we buy knowing we have loads of lights
Thank you. Fantastic breakdown of all information required. What screen would you recommend for a perfectly dark dedicated cinema room paired with a Hisense C1 projector?
I noticed you have Definitive Technology speakers. Are you just reviewing them and you’ll have a review come out for them soon, or did you actually make the switch?
Hey Chris, fantastic video. I am setting up a dedicated theatre room in my basement. I got a Hisense PL1, ultra short throw. It’s a light controlled room, and mainly for movies/tv shows. Do I need an ALR screen for the best experience? Also i was looking at a .8 to a 1 gain screen. What would you recommend? Thanks
If i have a room with a large window below the projector (mainly use it at night) is there any benefit to a screen over using my grey wall? The image already looks pretty good so trying to ration if a screen would add much over it in my open concept living room.
Black = Dark Gray. Dark screens such as the Screen Innovations Black Diamond are high end screens that are just high end ALR screens. They work well in most applications.
Hi Chris, super awesome explanation about the projectors and screen.. I have a quick question for you.. I have a screen 130" diagonal and Epson 5040U, but the 4K movies is with 2 black rows in the top and bottom of the image.. I try to use the Epson options but it is not Zoom out.. wondering if happen to you as well. Gilberto
Chris, what screen would recommend for the BenQ 3550i projector in a walkout basement with a few windows and a double french door? There is a moderate about of light entering the room but most of it can be blacked out with heavy curtains or blinds. Also, I would like a surround sound system with 7.2 capabilities with two ceiling speakers. I'd like to keep my budget for audio between $1500-$1800. Love the video reviews on the home theater products ! Keep up the great work!
Hi Chris, I am stuck on choosing a projector and a decent screen. I have narrowed it down to 2 projectors, mostly because of the motorized lens shift for a cinemascope screen. JVC NX5 or the Epson 6050 pro. (I am in Canada) Have a dedicated HTR, but unless all the black out drapes are closed, or night time I would say there is aprox. 40% ambient light at the most compared to a completely dark room. I am looking for a screen that can deliver in both scenarios. The JVC is the first choice, its a premium true 4K projector, but the lower Lumen rating worries me a bit. A grey ALR 1.3 gain screen? The Epson, with a much higher Lumen output is an Eshift unit, but definitely gets the job done. These days there isn't anywhere a person can go to see these projectors and screens in person, that would make it way to easy! Any help would mean a lot. Great job as always!
Hi Chris, Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I'm considering going with the Elite Screens Yard Master, 120 Inch Outdoor Front and Back projection for my patio/pool. I haven't figure out what would be the best projector to peer it with, as I need 1) front and back projection, 2) Outdoors resistance, and 3) light control (it will be in a patio). Would you mind recommending a few projectors for me to consider? Thank you.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the tutorial. I'm planning on installing the XGIMI horizon in my basement, I'd like to know if you have videos on start to finish , installing the projector, external speakers, hardware list etc. Thanks in advance!
Found you via the Vava Kickstarter. I decided to buy it. Now I need a screen. I need it to be a ceiling mounted pull down screen due to my setup. Not getting rid of the entertainment center with my stereo system on it. It takes up the full wall. I know I want to be able to watch during the day so it sounds like an ALR screen is what I need. Is this going to work decently? I am a person that gets easily bugged by imperfections. Also, I'm assuming I'm going to need to replace my 3D glasses. I'm doing all of this for 3D movies. Assuming my 2016ish active Panasonic Plasma ones might not work with the Vava. I had a hell of a time finding replacement glasses to work with my TV last year.
Excellent video as always, great information for anyone thinking about getting a projector. I have a 100 inch manual pull down screen because I couldn't decide on a motorized 120 inch screen, it was supposed to be temporary but I'm 2 years in now
thank you for the reference for projector central. Additionally can you do a screen review for elite outdoor models? I'm seeking a outdoor screen or inflatable outdoor screen around 20 feet or 240 inches thank you
11:33 you have hot spotting on your projection + ALR screen potentially... would double check this. Could do with putting the projector a little more back.
The projector is around 17ft away. As I mentioned in the video, some screens will produce hot spotting but there's not a lot you can do about it. Keep in mind that the camera exaggerates hotspotting too
I am looking for a projector and screen for work presentation but then will use at home afterwards. I found this video very helpful but would like your opinion on what I should get. I see you like elite screens so I was thinking of their 100' tripod or hyz screen which frees up another $100 for the projector, possibly going to the yard screen 120' model. For projectors I've looked at epson EX9240, and cinnema 2250, optoma HD39Hdr or the 1080hdr and lastly viewsonic PX 701-4k. All of these seem to be well reviewed from videos I watched and read about.
Really great video, very informative, thanks ! I got a question : what is the point of getting a long throw ALR screen in a dark room like yours, versus a grey 0.5 - 0.8 screen ? More contrast with the ALR even in a dark environment ?
u seems to have a lot of competence about, maybe u r the right person for give an answer to my question. do u think that a Kodak ultra mini proyector works with ipadpro? and i can utilize it like a screen with shiftscreen? For watch a movie and draw on procreate meanwhile for exemple. Thnks, Have a nice time. Jah Bless
Very informative. Covering a lot of questions for newbies. But, one question that has to be asked before picking a screen is....Do we go with a HD screen or anamorphic? If we go with an anamorphic aspect ratio screen then when we view HD material we'll lose information along the top and bottom...or will overshoot the screen. If we go with a HD screen then when watching films shot in 2.35:1 we'll loose information on the left/right sides correct? e.g. The Dark Knight. Flips back and forth throughout the film. Are we going to keep our finger on the "screen memory" button? Won't happen on a flatscreen TV...yes we're limited to at most 99"...and those are still too expensive for most of us. So I guess any 4k or 8k flatscreen up to 88" Or, we could use that paint called "Goo"? Then there won't be any "over-shot" as there's no frame. And that entire wall is the screen. though, I guess once you've watched a few movies you could later start adding a border and thus a "frame" around the projected areas.
best screen/screen paint for epson 3lcd powerlite 3010 front projector? We’ve been just putting the image on the wall for years (granted it is dark) but I would like to get more out of the image. We’ve been recommended a certain type of paint for the screen but I forget which kind. We do get natural light on the left back side. After the theater room area is a sliding door and more windows fairly behind those on the left hand side. I’ll have to measure how big the screen gets. We keep it at the largest setting typically. Would a 3D external Emitter help make the 3D more consistent? I’m buying a lot of 3D Blu Rays as of late.
Your videos are awesome! Quick question, I just purchased the new LG ultra short throw and I’m looking at screens. Our theater is going to be in our bonus room where our kids play a lot, are these screen super fragile? I noticed you have to wear gloves to put them together. I’m worried they could get hit by a ball or something. If you think that would mess them up, I think I’m going to get a retractable one. Thank you!
I just purchased the Vankyo V620 projector online for my 1st setup and should be here next week:). Do you have any suggestions on what type of screen I should go with for a fairly dark room?
Awesome video!! i am new to projectors and looking to by the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS300 Projector - Projector, which screen would go best with this on a high and low end. looking to purchase from bestbuy being as though i am a total tech member. please advise!!
Hey this is a really amazing video. I've been planning for a while now for a projector and plan to get started this month and this video was very helpful, informative, direct, etc.
Are there screens that are better for laser vs bulb projectors? I’ve got a laser projector on the way and want to pick the right screen. I didn’t notice that you spoke about that in this video.
I made my first 94" DIY screen using a sheet of white 1/4" thick Gatorboard, which is like foamcore, but stiffer, harder and more dent resistant. I made a 1x4 wooden frame and wrapped it in black velvet. It worked great. I remember comparing it to a professionally made screen at the time, and could tell no difference.
Hello! Im new to the home projector world and I found your video very useful. Right I got a Samsung LSP7T short throw projector. Based on what you said on the video I should get a Aeon CLR 3 121” ALR screen? That would give me the better picture?

I am curious about the impact of installing LED lights behind the projection screen on the visual experience? It's seem more real or a sense of prominence, especially when gaming. Could you share your opinion? Thanks!
First love the way you explain this very easy to understand. Question I am about to purchase my first projector and screen. It is for my garage so did not want to break the bank. What are your thought and or suggestion on Epson Home Cinema 1060 1080p? I just want to watch some sports and movies while I work in my shop. I am spending around 350 for projector and screen.
I see a recommendation for ALR screen for the Epson projector. But if u had a ultra short throw projector like the new Vava 4K which type of ALR screen would work best? Thanks
Phenomenal video, thanks for your research and expertise, I learned a ton. I’m planning on either purchasing or making my own screen and now I have some info about what to look/plan for.
Hi Chris, great stuff you have on the channel! Is the ALR screen meant for UST projectors only? Should I be using the regular white screen if I am only using a long throw projector? Is there any benefit if I use the ALR screen for a long throw project? Appreciate your advice. Thank you.
What do you recommend for a projector screen for a short throw projector set in a museum setting with white walls and overhead light sources in the vicinity? The Elite screen you use is very costly. Are there other cheaper options?
Hi Chris, thank you for all the info. But I am still in a pickle trying to find the right screen for the projector I bought (Samsung LSP9t). If i have a room with a large window below the projector (mainly use it at night) is there any benefit to a screen over using my grey wall? The image already looks pretty good so trying to ration if a screen would add much over it in my open concept living room.
ty, a while back there were debates about black screen being better, so that is not the case anymore? Thanks for explaining the gain
Thank you.
@Chris Majestic Sounds like you have a setup a lot like mine. I'm using the TK800M.
I have a 100 inch manual pull down screen because I couldn't decide on a motorized 120 inch screen, it was supposed to be temporary but I'm 2 years in now
Still have it?
What brand is it?
thank you for the reference for projector central.
Keep in mind that the camera exaggerates hotspotting too
@@ChrisMajestic you can move the projector back. It will reduce the hot spotting. I own 3 ALR screens and moving the Pj back reduces the hot spotting
Even though it doesn't look like it, my room is multi-purpose so I sometimes entertain company with the lights on.
Hey Chris. Great vid. What is the best way to adjust colour settings on a projector to achieve the best visuals? (I'm using the viewsonic px747-4k)
New favorite go to channel for all my home theater questions. 💯
the bigger the better, end of story
Sometimes
u seems to have a lot of competence about, maybe u r the right person for give an answer to my question. do u think that a Kodak ultra mini proyector works with ipadpro? and i can utilize it like a screen with shiftscreen?
So I guess any 4k or 8k flatscreen up to 88"
Or, we could use that paint called "Goo"? Then there won't be any "over-shot" as there's no frame. And that entire wall is the screen. though, I guess once you've watched a few movies you could later start adding a border and thus a "frame" around the projected areas.
What 80 inch screen you’d recommend for a backyard preferably easy set up. Using nebula capsule 3.
Thank you! I'm a designer and requests from a projector have been common, really helpful!
best screen/screen paint for epson 3lcd powerlite 3010 front projector?
Thank you!
So can I just buy a large piece of paper and hang it on a wall?
Most people are renting.. what are their options? Seems the retractable floor screen you had in other videos could work...?
Great vid man, thanks! That ambi-light set up is sick too!
i was just looking at a projector review when i saw your vid in the recommendations and i gotta say this is so helpful
Ty for the video...Also, you gave me so many ideas with your Tshirt. I just made one using my Echo tank printer with a Star Wars comic book cover.
Just ordered a Epson 4050, what screen should I get 150" motorized is a must.
I just purchased the Vankyo V620 projector online for my 1st setup and should be here next week:). Do you have any suggestions on what type of screen I should go with for a fairly dark room?
Excellent info. Thanks Chris. Everybody loves Chris...LOL.
Awesome video!! i am new to projectors and looking to by the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS300 Projector - Projector, which screen would go best with this on a high and low end. looking to purchase from bestbuy being as though i am a total tech member. please advise!!
Man how did you know that I was looking for this video this week...lol.
Thanks.
Same here are you going with 16:9 or 2.35?
@@mibz1117 16:9 as it's more common. What about you?
@@segelburgess2136 16:9 as well
Hey this is a really amazing video. I've been planning for a while now for a projector and plan to get started this month and this video was very helpful, informative, direct, etc.
Great content
What’s the best screen that you will recommend for the Samsung 120” The Premiere LSP7T 4K Smart Laser Projector
Would you recommend painting the walls and ceiling the same color or paint the ceiling darker
Wonderful tutorial! I've learned so much in 13 minutes!!! Thank you!
Hello! Im new to the home projector world and I found your video very useful. Right I got a Samsung LSP7T short throw projector. Based on what you said on the video I should get a Aeon CLR 3 121” ALR screen? That would give me the better picture?
Hi, could you please suggest best 120 inch floor raising CLR screen for ultra short throw projector and suggest few UST projector as well.thanks in advance.
What leds do you have behind screen?
Good info. Thinking about a projector mainly for 3D movies. I see some screens say 3D, some dont reference 3D. Does that really make a difference
I see a recommendation for ALR screen for the Epson projector. But if u had a ultra short throw projector like the new Vava 4K which type of ALR screen would work best? Thanks
Great Video!!, recently I bought a Epson EpiqVision Mini EF12, can you recommend a good screen for this projector?
Hey Chris - thank you for posting great content. Do you have any suggestions for 135 inch screen for Vava 4K?
Wondering this too. Going to get me the same projector soon and wanted over 100 in screen
Phenomenal video, thanks for your research and expertise, I learned a ton. I’m planning on either purchasing or making my own screen and now I have some info about what to look/plan for.
Hey Chris! Great video. Curious, of a few things. What sound dampening panels are you using?
Can you please educate me on the type of screens and companies that are suitable for this projector in both fixed and rollable screen with really good ALR Any help would be appreciated.
