- What's happening, folks! I'm back with another a-ha reaction, and this time we circle back for a b-side from the Analogue album, "Case Closed on Silver Shore." I don't want to say too much in advance this time, as the reaction unfolded in a compelling and surprising way, though massive shout-out to friend and champion of the channel Sofia, who shared this with us (as well as bonus/demo material from Hunting High & Low). I really love that you're part of this channel, and Lucca does too! Cheers. :)
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

Hi Matt, Lucca and A-ha family. This song was on maxi single analogue which they released back in 2005. It also included 3 versions of Analogue (single, live from Frognerparken and instrumental) and MInor Key Sonata. The maxi single also included a very cool a-ha desktop player.
Thank you for doing this so soon! 🥰 And thank you, Lucca, for coming back to the a-ha reactions. 😻 Did you tell her I was getting jealous of the ABBA people? Of course I enjoyed your introductory story of how Lucca came to occupy her place next to you when you were listening to IBLY. 😉🤗 And the description of her "literally melted" into your lap. ☺
When I sent you this I thought you could do a Saturday or Sunday Silver Shore Special, and in fact you did it! 🤪 Almost as if you read my mind!
I didn't want to raise your expectations too high when I said this was an important gap in your a-ha journey, what I meant was that you missed this one to complete the full collection of album / single songs they have officially released. (In fact, you are still missing one, the B-side of the first and very rare edition of Take On Me, but that one is on the rarities category and I plan to share it with you soon). But I really like this one for its darker vibes, especially the parts you mention. I wouldn't say it is one of my favourite songs, but it is one of my favourite "B-sides" and I like it more than many album tracks. 😉
It was indeed a great coincidence that you were listening to IBLY just before listening to this! And I had never made that connection, it's so funny! 😜 Though, now that I checked the Down To The Tracks book, the author describes this as a "cinematic gem, which continued in the vein of cuts such as 'I've Been Losing You', 'Early Morning' and 'Sycamore Leaves', all centred around a murder of some description". But I just thought of the general theme and never of that particular "boyfriend" / narrator in IBLY. So "appropriate" that you have listened to the 2 songs one after the other, and in the "right order". 😅
I can't recall if there is a real Silver Shore (I am sure I have looked that up at some time), but this time the lyrics are pretty obvious, for a change, and the title is also a quite clear insication of what the song is about. Something rare in a-ha songs. And this one is written by Paul, whose lyrics are generally more abstract and not so easy to interpret.
Thank you again for your kind words, I am very proud to be a friend of the channel. 🥰
Thanks for sharing these songs with Matt. Can you also share "Differences" (demo), which is on Lifelines 2019 deluxe edition (disc two) with him?
@@ahkkariq7406 It's my pleasure, Kari. It took me a while to get things ready to be able to share, but now I think I can share everything! 😁
Thank you for the reminder, in fact you have just corrected me! (Well, honestly, while I was writing my comment I wished someone would correct me if I was forgetting something. 😉) I was thinking of sharing the Deluxe editions bonus stuff in chronological order, so it would take some time (months!) before I got to Lifelines, but I have just realised the demo of Differences was the B-side of the Forever Not Yours single! 😲 So, it makes sense to share it now and correct what I said: Matt was missing Case Closed On Silver Shore and is also missing Differences to complete the (original) album and single songs. 👍 I had thought it was only a bonus track on a Deluxe edition.
In the meantime, I am also studying all the singles discography to make sure I am not forgetting any other B-side, and of course any help from other fans is most welcome. 🤗
@@ahkkariq7406 Oh yes!! Differences... 😊 A very beautiful song with touching lyrics with a humanist flavor, written by Magnes, no surprise! An unknown gem! I like both the studio version and the superb live version of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize concert. It's a song that Matt has to listen, for sure!!! 🥰🎶

I thought I heard that Differences was the B-side of a single, but I couldn't figure out which one. This means that the song is available in an official version as well, and not just as a demo. Do you have access to the single version? I think it's on UA-cam.
@@ahkkariq7406 Yes, I have the single, but the version of Differences is the same. :) I mean, there is no "studio version", the demo was released as the B-side of FNY and later released on the Deluxe Lifelines.
Hello again Matt and A-HA fam as this is my first listen to this track I have to say I really like it.
I knew there would be some fans that had never heard it. 😉
What a clever cat Lucca is!! She recognises a-ha and that she has to be on her chair when they are playing!!! (My last dog used to recognise certain tunes).
I was about to respond to this track, saying I hadn't heard it before, when I decided to dig out the Analogue CD album. I thought it strange that the case I pulled out was very thin - it was the Analogue single!!!! I'd forgotten I had it 😲 I obviously didn't think too much of this track and just played this a-side. I still had the receipt in the case (a bit faded, though) I can see the date I bought it - 28th January 2006 (a bit strange that it was after I bought the album and saw the Analogue concert at Wembley?) Anyway, thanks Sofia (and Matt) for making me go through my CDs - again! 😆By the way, the very start of this song - the chugging guitar, reminds me of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana.
Haha, it's good to have a pretext to go through our stuff and find things we didn't remember! 😀 See, so you could have sent this to Matt! But you didn't know you had it. 🤣 I guess you bought the single because of the B-side that wasn't on the album?... 😁
@sofiamar18 I guess that's why I bought it, but unfortunately, it didn't leave a lasting memory on me 🥴
The intro with the chugging guitar of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"... Yesss! You're right, I hear it too! 😁🎸🎵
Ah, yes, you're right, the start of Smells Like Teen Spirit! 😲 I had never realised that! And, to be fair, Nirvana's song is a blast! 🤟
@@dawndriscoll3344 can you check on your single if Paul is credited as the author of Case Closed? I took the info from Barry Page's book and of course I guess he is right, but it's always better to double-check. 🧐😁
Hi Matt, Lukka and A-HA family i hope you all enjoyed your weekend. I must have a different analogue cd to everyone else because it’s not on mine so I’ve never heard this track so this will be my first time hearing it along with Matt. Take care all and I’ll catch you on the next one. 😘 ❤️🇳🇴❤️A-HA FOREVER❤️🇳🇴❤️ 🎸🎹🎤 🥇🥇🥇 🏴🇺🇸
It's not in the album, I have it as track 2 on the single.
Overlooked for inclusion on the Analogue album …probably because they were trying to include more songs contributed by Morten at that time, but it would’ve been a better fit for the album than Make It Soon - Morten’s collaboration with Ole Sverre Olsen which is a bit of a misfit not to mention a mishmash sonically. I like this atmospheric song by Pal…eerie echoes of murder scenes here, reminiscent of other earlier similarly themed songs such as Sycamore Leaves, I’ve Been Losing You etc…
I do like the idea of this song, but it feels like it is lacking something to me. Maybe like Matt was saying about how he wished they didn't have to fade on the jam session. Maybe more jam session? Hmmmm....don't know.... I personally love Make it Soon. To me, it feels like the sister song of Manhattan Skyline. I love how it starts out so calm and sweet and then BAM! To me, I was so happy that was on the Album because it reminded me of their 90's rock and bluesy roots. It felt like they were saying "We're still here!". I do know it was a Morten song and Pål and Magne had nothing to do with it. I feel if they are not collaborating anymore, why not let all three bring their own stuff to the albums? I mean, maybe not all Morten's songs will be my favorites, but I also have Pål and Magne songs that aren't my favorites either. 🤷♀ I still wish Morten contributed to TN, but I completely understand that he didn't want to get into that stuff.
This song was the 'B Side' on the Analogue CD Single.
I did try and send it ages ago but as it turns out my internet was not good. This is a great track and i was shocked that this wasn't on the album. A murder mystery ? I never knew i needed this from a-ha !!
I would have loved to hear the jam session, man. I bet this would have been killer in concert with a Jam session.
@@shelld1261 I don't think they've played it live.... yet. With luck they are reading this and will hit us with a 15 minute jam on the next tour. Or in keeping with the theme of the song, one of them will be killed and the audience has the duration of the song to figure out who did it....
Actually, no that's a terrible idea. Sorry.
Yes, I have heard that unfortunately they haven’t played it live. ☹️You just meant that they would play a “Who done it”. Like theatre. I get it. The one who was “killed” would come back at the end and congratulate the people who figured out the “crime” 😊
@@shelld1261 Oh boy LOL, I didn't explain that very well but you got it. I didn't mean to actually... no. Not that.
When I first listened to this song, the chords progression, the vocal harmonies with the percussion of the chorus reminded me a little bit of a song from the 60s... Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds... I prefer the musical atmosphere of the verse. It's an interesting song, but there are some demos and B-side that I prefer than this one.
😊🎶
Ha, I’m familiar with the William Shatner version of that song!
Matt I forgot to ask how do you get in touch with you to share A-HA music? I don’t have your email address or whatever please let me know. Thanking you in advance and I hope to hear the answer to this question soon. 😘 ❤️🇳🇴❤️A-HA FOREVER❤️🇳🇴❤️
Hey, Alison! So my email is shnootz117@gmail.com. Thanks in advance for anything you can help me access, talk soon!
@@mattsnider2667 thankyou Matt, take care 😘
I like this song with a little strange atmosphere ....
It's "I've Been Losing You" meets "Less Than Pure". The intro is probably the best part, but it never really goes anywhere, no interesting musical tour during the bridge or anything. I like the ambience, not so much the song. Throwaway.
Yes, I can agree with you about its sort of "incomplete" feel, but I wouldn't rate it as "throwaway". 🙂 The fact that it is so cool with its dark ambience is enough to save it, for me. But I understand it didn't feel like a complete or fully developed track to be included on the album.
@@sofiamar18 when I first heard it (on the CD single - those were the days). I thought it was cool. But here we are almost 20 years later and it's not one I go back to. Incomplete is a good call. The chorus is not as interesting as the verse. Maybe with more time they could have improved it. Perhaps Paul should have worked with Magn...oh, wait. We don't do that sort of thing here 😃
@@nearvanaman 🤣 That was my thought too, maybe if they had worked it a little more, maybe togeth.....? 😛 Or maybe Paul ended up not knowing what else to do with it and just left it at that. Well, I also listen to it very very rarely and it's been years since I had heard it, so it still retains most of its initial appeal to me. 😉
@@nearvanaman I did a search on the song, and different websites give different information about who made the song. Nowhere is Pål stated as the sole originator.
@@ahkkariq7406 Yeah I have no idea who wrote it.
