Here are my picks for top 10 Dance songs of the 1980's 10) Personal Jesus- Depeche Mode 9) It's Tricky- Run DMC 8) I wanna dance with somebody- Whitney Houston 7) I want Candy- Bow Wow Wow 6) All Night Long- Lionel Richie 5) Let the music play- Shannon 4) Safety Dance- Men without Hats 3) Holiday- Madonna 2) Super freak- Rick James (BITCH) 1) I Ran- A Flock of Segals
Not true. "Holiday" was her first top 20 hit (at #16), and "Lucky Star" charted, at #4. "Borderline" was the last single from the album, so the cool kids already knew about Madonna. Then "Like a Virgin" came along she was a superstar.
WOW just one comment from a month ago signed with 72. and all the rest were from 3 and 4 years ago so none else has looked at this group of songs and singers who have passed over the recent years now. And here it is Oct 17, 2019 and I was around for all of these songs and they were great to dance to and now 49 years later still great to listen to since I am now 73. Yeah the 50's and 60's were good when I was growing up....
Lionel Richie's All Night Long should not be an honorable mention, It should at least be in the top 5! But I definitely agree with Michael Jackson being number one!
Pump Up the Volume - M/A/R/R/S Maniac - Michael Sembello Fascinated - Company B Gloria - Laura Branigan Come Go With Me - Expose Upside Down - Diana Ross Catch Me (I'm Falling) - Pretty Poison Tell It To My Heart - Taylor Dayne Safety Dance - Men Without Hats Straight Up - Paula Abdul Give It Up - KC Let the Music Play - Shannon Tarzan Boy - Baltimora Two of Hearts - Stacy Q Dancing In the Sheets - Shalamar Rhythm Of the Night - DeBarge
Sure this songs are great to dance, but what I recall from my youth in the 80's, in the dance floor we heard a lot of New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure... This list must be for the US, of course.
I was about to post the same thing, only I'd have added Human League, Wham, Bronski Beat, The Communards. British music was the best in the 80s, better than the imports from the USA.
Some personal favs: Let’s Go Crazy, 1999, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, & Baby I’m A Star by Prince, The Politics Of Dancing by Re-Flex, Blue Monday and Fine Time by New Order, You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates, Jump (For My Love) by The Pointer Sisters, Thriller and The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson,Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Step On By Happy Mondays, Big Time and Sledgehammer by Peter Gabrie,l Love Action (I Believe in Love) by The Human League, We Got the Beat by The Go-Go's, (I've Had) The Time Of My Life by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes, Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant, Thinking About Your Love by Skipworth & Turner, and Jungle Love by Morris Day & The Time
This had to be one of the hardest lists you've ever had to come up with!!! There are so many good 80's dance songs it seems almost impossible to come up with just 10... And of course, the king and queen of pop take the top spots!!!

michrican tbh most of these songs aren't too great for dance. AND Seriously! Pop up the jam falls in this category? Uh yeah it was released in 89, it's the 80s. No that should be in the 90s. What should be on this list should be Stock Aitken and Waterman songs as well as Bobby O. Hi-NRG.
HCH Millwall Yeah but sadly they are not popular like other shitty artist. Compared to the 00s and 90s, and especially 80s and 70s music, it is shit. I am also not being biased. 18 year old speaking
You missed so many songs! What about the New Wavers like Depeche Mode and New Order? You also ignored the Freestylers like Debbie Deb, Nu Shooz or Stacey Q? Not to mention Prince, Duran Duran, etc...
As am I!! But they mention Madonna twice and Dead or Alive are only an honourable mention!!? Blue Monday though will always be my favourite 😍 even if it didn’t make it onto the list ☺️
Cameo "Word Up". And you also forgot "C'est La Vie" by Robbie Nevil. Wow both came out in 1986! I was there. I remember the B 52 shots, long Island ice teas and planter's punches. A lot of these songs were played that go way beyond this channel. MJ was there of course, but for only a fraction of the playlist. Blue Monday, You Spin Me Round were played a lot too. Early 20s. College days.
Io loved all these; could bust a move to any! Just because your personal faves weren't on this list is not a failure on the uploader's psart, ikt'ds just testimony to how many truly great songs came out of the '80s! (No greater decade for music) The BEST era for music!
+HeirOfGlee You can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind. Cause your friends don't dance, And if they don't dance. Well they're no friends of yours
While this list is "okay"... I'm missing the actual dance songs. Pump up the jam is like the only one in this list. Could've made it on this list: - Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams - Anne Clark - Our Darkness - Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus - Kraftwerk - The Model - 101 - Rock to the beat - Men Without hats - Safety Dance - M.A.R.R.S. - Pump up the volume - Front 242 - Headhunter And many more...
Man you guys are missing so many its crazy... "Let's Go Let's Go" - Prince "Atomic Dog" - George Clinton "Let's Whip It Baby" - The Dazz Band "Party Train" - Gap Band "Electric Slide" - Grand Master Slice "I Can't Wait" - Nu Shooze "Can You Feel The Beat" - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam "Point of No Return" - Expose "Operator (This Is An Emergency)" - Midnight Star and that's just a tad of r&b/funk/freestyle.
I guess this list depends on a person's taste. My personal list would probably be: Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle Erasure - A Little Respect A-Ha - Take On Me Animotion - Obsession B-52s - Love Shack Michael Jackson - Billie JeanCyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now (*in no particular order)
Love the list and happy to Eurythmics in the honorable mentions, but what about the B-52's Love Shack? The Stray Cats' Stray Cat Strut? Or Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go? What a great trip down memory lane. :)
I love how the description for Celebration is the exact same for its place in WatchMojo's top ten dance songs of all time. Also, I love all of these songs.
as always, excellent work : ) thank you watchmojo, for including cindy lauper and madonna and whitney houston, but number one is: Eurytmics - sweet dreams" . we all know the 80s filled a gap from 60/70s heritage to modern 90s generation, and we all know that micheal jackson fills his own lists, close to madonna :)
I love the 80's so much that I recognised every song on this list! Footloose is my ultimate party song, I cannot go to a party and not have that song on!!! \m/
The 80's were the best era of music. Today's music is a WTF? era. Since the 2000's, no act can be like the 80's. Rap was a baby in this era and no Kanye West not the vulgar rappers. If you are NWA, you rap with a purpose. We need another top 10 dance songs of the 80's. too many artists are missing.
Other songs that should have at least gotten honorable mentions: "Obsession" - Animotion "Let It Whip" - Dazz Band "Venus" - Bananarama "I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls "Let's Groove" - Earth, Wind & Fire "Neutron Dance" - The Pointer Sisters "The Politics of Dancing" - Re-Flex "A Love Bizarre" - Sheila E.
1980's arguably the greatest decade for music in history... And yet watch mojo still manage to mess up
The 70's were so much better....
the best era of the 80's
Every time period has good, bad and ugly music... No period is the "best", because it's all opinion.
ControversialGamer exactly WatchMojo made a list that is called top 10 most important pop songs and thriller didn't even made to num. 1

Apart from Shannon, your list is SHITE!
No "Safety Dance" or "Take on Me"? And "You Spin Me Round" is only an honorable mention?? Why WM?
Nick Wilks Take on Me has a really good beat you could dance to. Which is what they said this list was, any song you could dance to.
+Sebastian Reed Andrews Hey, why not put all good songs with dances you can dance to in this video. Oh wait.. it's a Top 10...

He's the best dancer of any generation, incredible.
he is even a better dancer than his back up dancers

Jackson, Jackson, the legend Michael Jackson!
@Andrew Brunnette Yep.

if you are going to go with a Madonna song Into the Groove is a better dance song than Holiday
That's what I said !! xD

Truth. I am so flabbergasted they chose Holiday. And their facts are wrong-- Holiday was NOT her breakout hit, it was Borderline.
Not true. "Holiday" was her first top 20 hit (at #16), and "Lucky Star" charted, at #4. "Borderline" was the last single from the album, so the cool kids already knew about Madonna. Then "Like a Virgin" came along she was a superstar.

I cannot believe that a list of the top 10 dance songs from the 80s does not include "Blue Monday." I am just speechless.

What a nice list. It Does not matter if you do not agree with the choosen songs. That matter is that this is 80s and everything is awesome.
Karma Chameleon, You Spin Me Right Round and Sweet Dreams!
While this list is "okay"... I'm missing the actual dance songs. Pump up the jam is like the only one in this list.

And many more...
You know this whole list should have been MJ songs right? Maybe one Madonna and Whitney song to be fair.
Disagree, Madonna had some dance anthems too, I mean Like a Prayer ...duh. Into the Groove and Papa Don't Preach too
But Whitney had other songs like How will i know, So emotional, Love will save the day and I wanna dance with somebody. All those should be here

Love the list and happy to Eurythmics in the honorable mentions, but what about the B-52's Love Shack? The Stray Cats' Stray Cat Strut? Or Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go? What a great trip down memory lane. :)
This whole list could of been filled up with Michael Jackson songs lol
M.V Knight exactly but the rules for top 10s is one song per artist
M.V Knight I came for Annie are you ok, are you ok Annie XD
and Prince
Not really
Madonna was more consistent in the dance music scene. Into the groove is considered to be the dance song of the 80s
It is so cool seeing my Uncle Herby in the Salt N Pepa vid! Always been proud of what my und did ^^
The 80's was the best!!!
I agree!!!
I love how the description for Celebration is the exact same for its place in WatchMojo's top ten dance songs of all time. Also, I love all of these songs.
BILLIE JEAN IS THE BEST SONG FROM THE 80'S
xMsDaytonax it was a good song but there are definitely better songs, like Baby Be Mine.
Pretty good list. There are only sooooo many dance songs, especially in the 80s. My personal favorite is Duran Duran's The Reflex.
How "Let's Dance" wasn't even a honorable mention?
GOD I'm so glad I wasn't the only one wondering this
I love this list!!!!!! Make more of this!!!!1
Hello
How are you doing
80's - Best era of music!
I agree!!
as always, excellent work : ) thank you watchmojo, for including cindy lauper and madonna and whitney houston, but number one is: Eurytmics - sweet dreams" . we all know the 80s filled a gap from 60/70s heritage to modern 90s generation, and we all know that micheal jackson fills his own lists, close to madonna :)
Billie Jean had to be #1! whenever that song played at the club, everybody got up and danced!
Thriller is better
All his songs are
I love the 80's so much that I recognised every song on this list! Footloose is my ultimate party song, I cannot go to a party and not have that song on!!! \m/
Not even an honorable mention to Blue Monday by New Order?? That's one of the catchiest 80's songs I've every heard.
+JNightShadows The lack of new wave was disturbing but the lack of Prince was just offensive.
and still to this date the most sold 12" ever
What a list!!! Thank you guys!
No Duran Duran? The Reflex? Hungry Like a Wolf?
I was bloody waiting for the reflex
Nah, Come undone
Duran Duran were not a dance band by any stretch of the imagination!
I know right? disappointing
Andrew Demetrius whatever came flying out of your mouth was pure garbage, they were iconic
1980'S ARGUABLY THE ONE OF THE BEST DECADES OF LIFE.
YASSSSS!!!!!! Michael Jackson my KING #1 yes he obviously had to win he still the best
Yaretzy Valdez uum what?
Brianna moonwalker Jackson what?
Yaretzy Valdez you commented first lol
Brianna moonwalker Jackson ya I know XD
"You Spin Me Round" should've been more than an honorable mention.
Let's Groove -> Earth, Wind and Fire is missing.
What About Let's Groove By Earth Wind & Fire?, That Song Was Ranked as One Of The Grooviest and Best Songs That Came Out Of The Early 80s
The 80's were the best era of music. Today's music is a WTF? era. Since the 2000's, no act can be like the 80's. Rap was a baby in this era and no Kanye West not the vulgar rappers. If you are NWA, you rap with a purpose. We need another top 10 dance songs of the 80's. too many artists are missing.
all those songs are in my father's mixtape! ah i remember being à kid watching my old man mixing behind the turntables... and i would dance it off
what, no Rick Ashtley Never Gonna Give You Up?
Upside Down by Diana Ross, Fascinated by Company B, I Can't Wait by Nu Shooz, Let the Music Play by Shannon, Safety Dance Men w/out Hats 💜
Michael Jackson #1
I thought "You Spin Me Round" would be #1.
-At least it was a honorable mention.-
"You Spin me Around"... no papu, es la canción de Taringa! at Nite. Denunciado!!
Takes me back to community center dances in junior high. Oh yeah!
Footloose in honorable mentions? C'mon!
Yeah that's crazy
Other songs that should have at least gotten honorable mentions:
"Obsession" - Animotion
"Let It Whip" - Dazz Band
"Venus" - Bananarama
"I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls
"Let's Groove" - Earth, Wind & Fire
"Neutron Dance" - The Pointer Sisters
"The Politics of Dancing" - Re-Flex
"A Love Bizarre" - Sheila E.
