THE MANY FACES OF MODERN NAIROBI (Kenya Documentary)

- We get to know the many faces of modern Nairobi, Kenya - a complex and beautiful city of 5 million and growing. The economic powerhouse of East Africa, it’s still a place of blatant inequality and the friction that comes with it. But Nairobi isn’t just its struggles. It’s a cosmopolitan hub with all the perks you’d find in any major international city. And it's an exciting hub of unique culture and energy.
In this video, we shop at Toi Market and learn more about mtumba - imported secondhand clothing ubiquitous in Kenya. We take a matatu, privately owned buses that are Nairobi's biggest form of urban transport, and a major quirk of the city. We visit Kibera, one of the largest slums in East Africa, and witness the resilience and struggle that exists there. We go to a Prince Indah concert. Eat in Nairobi Chinatown and learn how Chinese development is transforming the city. Try traditional Kenyan food. And go to Gondwana, a party emblematic of posh, international Nairobi. We did it all! And we're so excited to share it with you.

I'm a documentary editor from Kenya and I must say this is the best documentary featuring Kenya that I've watched in a loong time! Good job!👏👏
Shame on you. 65% of the video footage is in Kibera/slums but the video title is “the many faces of Nairobi”, the % of the size of Kibera/slums relative to the total size of Nairobi is at most 5%.
@@taxxpressusaI agree the editing was good but she dwelt too much on the slums and hardships while barely shining the positives that the city has to offer. But I guess this is what gives traction and ensures views. I almost wanted to stop watching but just gave her the benefit of doubt.
@@alexchui3511 she dint dwell too much, it was a fair representation of our reality.
@@amoskasera7642 Maybe it was to you, it wasn't for me. We know these narratives because we've heard them numerous times.
Yeah. The "poverty tourism" thing was a bit irritating. Every city in the world has it's very rich and very poor neighborhoods. There are corners of London and New York that are so grimy you wouldn't believe it, but people never dwell on those areas when they visit. They show the opportunities and beauty of the city. Nairobi is way waaay more than Kibera. Kibera has been done and over done. I loved the Matatu Culture bit though. That was nice.
Your revelation of the dichotomy that exists in Nairobi was spot on. There's a symbiotic relationship between the rich and the poor. I'm a proud Nairobian and I loved your documentary. The matatu ride deserves an Oscar 🤣🤣🤣
This is one hell of beautiful documentary that covers the black and white of Nairobi without leaving the gray. Hongera!

My guy I cried too bro, I was like these people made me upset, they better make me smile soon and I can positively say that they did 😊
I assumed this would be a standard vlog and was ready to switch it off, but how wrong I was. This is a great travel doc. I really appreciate the lengths the team went to to connect with the people and the place.
Thank you so much! We really appreciate this kind comment 🙏
I was just about to say the same thing when I came to the comments. As a Kenyan I have watch many vlogs of Nairobi to the point that it is all predictable however how @dotsonamap cover it is enlightening even for a local.
You mean shitting in kenya is connecting? It's disgusting to show only the bad side of Nairobi, which is less than 10% of the city. Shame.
Nice documentary. I wouldn't say the gates in homes are due to high crime rates. Growing up in Nairobi late 70s and 80s, all our homes had gates with our dad's names written in caps on a board and a dog! There was barely any crime it's just a culture thing and like you said, a sense of ownership 😅
As a Ugandan who grew up in Nairobi (South C) in the 1990s, I feel an instant connection watching this about a place I call a second home (even when not a resident there anymore). This ignites fond childhood memories. ☺️

I think mtumba affects local market contrary to what Ambitho said. It's quite difficult for local brands to compete when mtumba clothes are being sold for a fraction of what local brands cost
Though she is also right in that people are willing to purchase local clothes for events. For daily life mitumba are practical coz they are cheap.
What about matatus?
Dead men and women clothing sole purpose, destroy/delete Kenya's textile industry. Sick!!
Raising the price won’t miraculously make people able to afford local clothes. And it’s more complex than you think, all these intergovernmental agreements to make africa the European dumping site for all sorts of waste… it’s complicated. Nigerian politicians literally took money to make a port in Wari the dump site for nuclear waste.
They invented AGOA where Africa will make clothing for the west and recycle the used clothing as mtumba
That Kibera segment was very humbling. Make you appreciate life forms from top to bottom. Thank you for sharing ❤
A balanced take on Nairobi as i know it.
Black and white together, shanties and posh side by side, the poor and super rich, modern and ttaditional.
And yet the ciry shines on and keeps moving...loved your professional vlog.

😂😂😂 they went to bar next door but not very late, that was the second one. Legendary.
I understand you tried to give a balanced view of the city but I found it a bit skewed on the hardships and slums with exaggerated numbers. By now it should be clear that Kibera has 170K inhabitants following the 2019 Kenya census but still the 1 million number keeps bandied about for whatever reasons. Kibera slums is not even 1% of Nairobi land area but your story focused highly on this. We continue mourning "poverty porn" loved by westerners and their media. We are not saying poverty and hardships are not there but Nairobi has come a long way and there's so much to celebrate and showcase and I'd rather visitors concentrate more on this. The poverty/slum thing has been oversold and overtold and doesn't quite interest most people now. The narrative has been changing for the better and most people now report on the positives and the changes. I applaud you on the editing but you could have done better with showcasing Nairobi even though maybe negatives guarantees you traction and views. If and when you come back, do better.
I watch many videos by foreigners who come to Nairobi. Even from other African countries... and the first thing they say is how shocked they are at how good and developed Nairobi is. This means that there is a misconception about Nairobi because a lot of the images that go out are about slums. When they see the roads, the malls, the residential areas even in Eastlands, they are surprised. Poverty Tourism needs to stop. Western cities have very grimy and impoverished places as well, but you don't see those being focused on. The Narrative needs to change.
well said sir.
Notice how the posh Nairobi was giving a brief airplay at the end. Very brief!! Poverty tourism is old… let’s just stop it or give a leveled review of everything. I hope she has done a run on poverty levels of where she comes from and if she is not from Europe (which can still be zeroed in), then the situation is the same. Poverty and riches is side by side. Take for example America. The gap is insane… She can only be tolerated by people who haven’t travelled around…🤷🏾♀️
Thank you sir! We’re so prone to going along with group mentality. People be only saying how great the documentary is without calling out on some of the biases. Ata huku Yues ukikuja Philly or even on some of the streets of San Francisco you’ll wonder if you really still in the US of A that they show looking so great on our tv screens.
I’m not trying to be negative and I’m grateful to those who showcase our beautiful country Kenya to the world but on that same note, some facts need to be clarified.
The mitumbas by the way, are mostly “hand me downs.” Some are even brand new just that those who bought them didn’t end up liking them. And most people hand me downs are normally in pretty good shape hence “the mitumba camera.”
Another point of correction, kindly, Kenya is a country in Africa. Africa ain’t a country.
I agree with someone who said that, it’s time we get over the “poverty tourism” that’s been going on for centuries. I’m not disputing the fact that we have very many poor individuals in our society but, I just want to say that it’s only fair to show both sides of the coin, keeping in mind to try to make the lives of those poor individuals better, and holding elected leaders accountable as and where necessary.
@@jotaya Youre right about that. When I was traveling also in Europe for years, I was really tempted to document my own poverty porn because the things I saw there were horrific 😱. I can even dare say that some people there experience extreme poverty and are trapped there even if most of these European states have a generous welfare system.
I love this, way better than what most you tubers show us. Hope Kenya's treating you well

I am sorry, if you are kenyan, your response shows how naive you are. These shameless youtubers are shitting on kenya, and you are ok with that? This type of vlogging is very old fashioned in Africa today. That's why people like wode maya, trudy, African Tigress came to change that.
The story telling and video editing were excellently done 👌🏾 and I'm in awe!
Your story about kibera, toi market, and Prince Indah being famous amoung Luos are accurate depictions our culture.

We tried to ban the importation of 2nd hand clothing to support local clothes industry and the US threatened to block the $ 400 million duty free exports of Kenyan products to the US.
we cant always be bowing down to these oppressors, for us to have better future for our children...we have to make sacrifices....
I bet the government is willing to do that, are you willing to cover up what the us contributes with your taxes ie increased taxes
@@mpendakiswahili3053 It is a sound financial decision that the government had to make. It is not about oppression but that we lack the bargaining power when negotiating this deals. $400 million is a lot of revenue that is brought in by many industries; not just mtumba.
Hope Zakayo makes good use of our tax money instead of looting it because hope is all we got right now😢
A country full of irony, we make clothes for global brands in our EPZ's and then import them back as second hand clothes, in as much mtumba is a big sector in the economy, it has most definitely stifled the textile industry here in Kenya, it's a shame.
So true and so puzzling and so sad.
And that's what one of the presidential candidates wanted to change and grow our textile industry but..
@@bella-qz6ls actually the industry is picking up quite well nowadays.
@@4Waridi ..😊.. That's great to know..
The textile-mtumba debate is a hard one. On one hand, mitumbas are cheap and of good quality, new clothes are expensive for the majority of the population and there are no guarantees that people will like them especially on style or quality. All in all, it's failure of governance and politics. Until we put our house in order, mitumbas will be here for the long term.
The documentary is well done. You are most probably a trained journalist. I enjoyed watching this.

The Matatu scene was epic!
So glad you liked it! It was possibly the most fun we've ever had filming.
It was a complete lie, we don’t dance in matatu’s, it’s illegal to do that and police would immediately impound a Matatu that was a dance hall as it drove passengers.
@@anonymous3274 chill, just adding a lil fun to it.
It's a fake scripted scene with paid actors and VERY ILLEGAL.
My dear after watching your documentary about your home town and this one; the situation in your town is much more serious than that one in Kenya; Let me surprise you Mtumba is also here in Europe in free markets and some defined shops for second-hand products, Those my fellow Kenyans showed you the shanti house near a wall; it was like drama; some how just acting. those people have better houses than rich people; I have stayed in the slum I have a real experience, And that Kibera slum you see from outside some people live there and are happier than those in tall buildings you call rich the other side - And some families in the slum can take of you for as long as you want to be in Kenya
still you didn't make sense for how long has Kibera existed in Nairobi, as much as mitumba is in Europe is it as it is common back home? we deserve better the whole thing of mitumba & slums define our weakness in policies as a result of bad politics or leadership even Singerpore was once a wooden Chinese slum but they had to put their acts together we like reacting instead of acting.
Of all the documentaries about Nairobi I have watched this is by far the best, I could feel the vibrancy and it was action packed, anyone who starts watching it will definitely watch it to the end
Thanks so much! It was a great experience to visit and film the city.
It's best to you because it shows slums, which what is expected of african cities like nairobi. This is very old fashioned now.

@@muragegitari6052 I meant no offense. My purpose was to say that It seemed that a woman and her child needed me. A little extra money applied to the problem of one family's poverty doesn't hurt.
