- The New Yankee Workshop single bed is a four-poster with robust turnings on the posts and scrolled and serpentined cut-outs on the headboard. The bed is built from maple and pine. A bed similar to the New Yankee version, built between 1825 and 1840, can be found in Massachusetts at the Concord Museum, only steps away from the historic Old North Bridge.

Growing up every Sunday watching Norm work it looked like Magic how wood just turned into these beautiful objects
Norm makes it look easy!
Great craftsmanship. Hideous color choice.
That is a beautiful bed frame, I remember this episode when I was a young teen, skilled hand work.
Damned shame that programs like this no longer exist. The DIY and HGTV are about people's lives with an underlying theme of remodeling or buying a new place. I miss the examples and ability to watch and learn how. This Old House scratches the surface, but lacks in depth details like you get here from Norm.
Everything I know about woodworking I learned from watching this show every Saturday morning and bought all the same tools as he has and still do all the stuff that he does , still buying drawings too from here , love it
I made a turned side table on a lathe in jr highschool shop class. I have never used a lathe since then but this episode makes me want to.
Go for It! Just wear a face shield.
That lathe is the second oldest Delta tool that's still in the NYW more than 30 years later, after the radial arm saw.
Fuggly bed. Nice workmanship.
Great video 📹 and song lyrics ❤😊
beautiful work thank you for sharing. God bless.
I will be undertaking my first wood turning project soon. Table legs for a side table. So this episode lends motivation
Hi If you have no experience of wood turning I would highly recommend you get some instruction from an experienced turner. Wood turning can be very dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. The are many Wood Turning Clubs in USA and UK where you can get some help. Also there was no mention of sharpen the tools which is essential in safe turning. I have done some turning in the past. Good luck with your project.
I second getting some instruction to start. If there’s a Woodcraft or Rockler nearby they have classes that are relatively inexpensive. I’d add in one of the few things I take exception with that Norm’s done: please DON’T adjust or move the tool rest with the lathe turning. Set the tool rest where you want it and turn the blank by hand to make sure nothing hits before you start the lathe.
👍

Is there a source for where the mattress can be obtained in the measured drawing, Russ?
It works with a boxspring with the mattress on top.
I would suggest people turn the lathe OFF and let it stop before moving the tool rest. It can go VERY bad, VERY quickly - and very painfully.
What size is the bed? I don't think it was mentioned.
The one Norm built is a Full size, although the plans can be adjusted for any size mattress.
. Thanks. I'll keep it in mind.
Challenging.
OMG a savage!!! Use two nuts locked together to screw in the hanger bolt!!!!
And its a borderline warcrime the colour he choose for the head&footboard...
