  • Moon And Stars Watermelon is an heirloom variety that is very unique when compared to most watermelons. It has yellow spots that that range in size from very small, to the size of a grape fruit or larger. The ones in this video came up in our compost pile, so they got a very late start. We enjoyed watching the melon develop, and even though the one I sampled was slightly underripe, it was still very sweet. If it would have been fully ripe, it would have been excellent. Let us know if you've ever grown this type of watermelon. Thanks for watching!

It grew well for us many years ago. Vines spilled out well past the garden edges and I lost several when husband decided to “brush hog the weeds”. He shot off the tractor seat after seeing red flesh scattered behind him thinking he’d hit an animal. Never planted them again. He drove the new riding mower over my day lily garden to trim all the “grass” up near the house the next spring…they bloomed like crazy that year. He’s the biggest varmint I deal with. When I hear engines start up I find out why!

Lol. I get in trouble around the flowers beds sometimes myself. Good to hear that this type of watermelon worked well for you. It seemed pretty hardy here too.

I think it would have been outstanding if it would have had time to ripen.

Good Morning Jim - Thanks for showcasing this unusual watermelon variety. I would say it did pretty good for growing in a compost pile if it just had a little more time. I have not grown any melons due to my space limitations but hope to someday. Hope you have a great weekend and stay warm as I think more snow is coming. Ground hogs are not always right.

Good morning Sue. I understand about not growing watermelons because of the space issue. There are several things I would grow more often if I had more space. Hope you don't get too much snow. I think that groundhog is a compulsive liar :)

Hi! So we grew smaller melons vertically last summer and it worked well for us in Zone 6. They were a Japanese variety. Happy gardening!

Wow there is hope. Would need more infrastructure for that but good to know it is possible. Thanks@@litmint9790

That's a pretty melon even though its not ripe yet. I can't grow melons either because of lack of space. It does look tasty. Thanks again for the link to the seed saving boxes. I've gotten all of my seeds organized in two of the containers. Have a great day and stay warm, close your back door up there. Too much cold weather is coming our way. Just joking. I'm not a cold weather fan. Take care.🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉

You're welcome! Glad the boxes worked out for you. I have my seeds in my boxes, but one of them is about as organized as a train wreck. Lol, we've had some warm weather for us....in the 60s. It's going to get cooler though. Hope it stays warm down there. Have a great weekend!

A really cool grow even under the circumstances. We have tried that kind before from our market but the one season we tried to grow didn't do well. A future rematch maybe. Thanks for the share!

Yep, it was kind of fun to watch this one grow. I wish watermelons didn't take up so much room.

Hi and thanks for introducing me to this watermelon. I've never heard of it. I imagine you will plant it this year (a non-volunteer) :)

Hi! Whether I grow it or not depends on if I can find room. Sometimes it's just hard to find room for melons.

That’s a “cute” looking watermelon! You can see it’s not a mass-produced genetically modified supermarket variety because of the size of those seeds and the amount of flesh it has. Enjoy the weekend, mate. Cheers!

Thanks! Yes, it does have some old fashioned very large seeds. More like I remember them being when I was a boy. I was surprised by how sweet it was even though it was slightly underripe. Have a great weekend!

Hello, I have Moon & Stars watermelons, they taste different. Depending on the year. And sometimes they have very thick skin and sometimes not... But they look beautiful :)
A friend of mine had a watermelon in 2023 that had 2 large moons. And in 2023, all of them had only dots. There were no moons :(
    Greetings from Poland

That is the most interesting melon I have ever seen!! I haven't heard of it before this video. Would you consider selling me a handful of seeds? I would send you the SASE if you would like along with a couple dollars for the seeds.

Yes, they are pretty interesting. I don't sell seeds, but Baker Creek had them last time I checked. Hope you enjoy growing them.
