Royal Golden and Mountain Sweet Yellow Watermelons - Taste Tests

- This year we grew Royal Golden and Mountain Sweet Yellow Watermelons. In this video I will let you know how each of them did in our garden, and do a taste test of each.
Weather can sometimes make or break a watermelon season, and our weather wasn't the best. Mainly because of some rain that came at the wrong time in the season.
Before you go, let us know what type of watermelon you like to grow, and let us know if you've ever grown either either the Royal Golden or the Mountain Sweet Yellow watermelon.

I garden in zone 6b, in the state Kansas. I would love to hear from you, so feel free to comment, make suggestions, ask a question, give tips, tell about your garden, or even offer constructive criticism.
Thanks for watching!
As a kid, my folks would put a watermelon in the creek to cool while we ate a picnic lunch. Nothing tasted better than that icy cold watermelon - and then having a watermelon seed spitting contest! So much fun.
That sounds like fun to me, Margaret. Those are some good memories for sure.
Your Watermelons looks very komisch Sir.
I guess they do look a little funny.
I want to try that Royal Golden variety. It looks delicious. Right now I'm growing silver Yamato and also Crimson Sweet.
Sounds great! Crimson Sweet is a good one.
Just dropped seeds. Yours look amazing.
Thanks! Good luck!
Thank you for sharing
You're welcome!
Love the gorgeous color of the melons. Yum !
Thanks Vicki! Yes, they do have some really nice color.
I just got some Royal Golden seeds in the mail from Bakers Creek yesterday and then I came across your video today. The algorithms are getting spooky! I'm glad to have found you though. I like your style - kinda reminds me of Joe Pera (that's a compliment).
Thanks Jolie! I hope you enjoy growing this watermelon as much as we did. You're the second person who has made the Joe Pera comparison. I get Bob Ross all the time though, so I'm used to it :)
'23 will be my first year trying to grow watermelons and I have Royal Golden seeds! Thanks for the video!
You're welcome, Candace! Good luck!
AMAZING ROYAL GOLD WATERMELON MOUNTAIN WATERMELON WOW! BEAUTIFUL NO2 😋 YUMMY, 🍉YES ,❤️🖤💚🤎 FAMILY DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME,
Thanks Daphne!
My whole household loves strawberry watermelon. 😊
Thanks for sharing that!
I grow different ones every year I grow in raised beds so cracking is not an issue my best producing melon has been orange crush and very sweet at that
Thanks for sharing that with us, Dalia!
Wow, the sound of the crisp watermelon was lovely! I never had success growing watermelon, but I only tied to when I was a beginning gardener. Finding space would be hard as well. Those are beauties!
Thanks Michelle! I'm not all that experienced at growing them, but it was strangely satisfying cutting into one I grew myself. You're right....finding space for them can be a problem.
Midwest Gardener , I bet it was!
Wow! Those are some good looking watermelons! The color of the second one is beautiful!
Thanks Sasha! They were just as tasty as they look. We did like the taste of the Royal Golden better than the Mountain Yellow though. The Royal Golden is just so unusual because of how it looks a lot like a pumpkin when it is ripe.
@@MidwestGardener i ate some really delicious watermelon in Bulgaria but didn’t have any yellow one.
Man, you really lived it up over there. Nicely done!! 😀
I never had much luck growing watermelons,I was going to try a couple different varieties this year and glad that I didn't due to weather. Thanks for the video Jim and have a great day. 👍🏻
Yes, the weather here wasn't that great for watermelons either....or at least the timing wasn't. You have a great day too, David!
They both sound absolutely delicious. 😋
They were 🙂
Yay excited! I just ordered Royal Golden seeds last night then just saw your video! Thanks for sharing!! Blessings from Virginia! ~jc
Thanks a bunch! I hope you enjoy seeing them grow as much as we did. Good luck!
@@MidwestGardener thank you!!!
@@SteadfastTrailFarm You're welcome.
They both look delicious! I'm done buying from the stores except maybe at the first of the season. The store bought ones are tasteless and usually go to tbe worm bin. Worms love melons. They are also so expensive. A waste of money. I remember growing up we used to pile into the ole station wagon and head to north Florida. They were 5 for a dollar. We'd bring back melons for everyone. Those were the days right? Maybe I'll try to grow some next year. Have a great weekend!
Thanks Shirley! Yep, those were the days. I remember when my grandparents used to chill a melon in a washtub with ice. There are lots of family memories surrounding watermelon. I guess they are a little like homegrown tomatoes. The homegrown ones always taste a little better.
@@MidwestGardener You're right. Family reunions and watermelon seed spitting contests. I don't think that happens too much anymore.
Unfortunately not.
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Good morning Jim. Sounds like a challenge to know when it is ripe. The indoor/outdoor lighting makes a big difference. I have not tried to grow watermelons. We get some locally that are perfect. Now that it is just the two of us we haven't gotten one in several years. It seems the weather has been a challenge this year for almost everyone. Along with the other challenges we've faced and are still facing. Stay safe my friend. Best wishes Bob.
Good morning Bob. Yes, I'm still working on trying to tell when the perfect time to pick is. On the Mountain Sweet Yellows, it seemed like they always wanted to split before I was ready to pick. Yep, we've had one heck of a year, and I'm thinking next year might be a rough one too.
Same here but I hope it will start getting better
Me too.
Great video Jim
Thanks Rob! I appreciate the support!
Hello. when I had the "GoldenMidget" variety for the first time, I was very surprised by the color of the leaves :) Now I know that there is diversity in the world of watermelons that I am excited about. What varieties will you plant this season? I will be growing Mountain Mountain this year. I invite you to see the effects :) Regards
Regards
Good luck with your watermelons this year. I'm not sure that I will be growing any melons this year. I'm going to be devoting more space to some of my pepper crosses.
Those both looked really good. We had an orange inner type last year and one of the best I have had. That rain can happen at bad timing. Small types are high on our list every year to take a look at, but always a hard time getting anything in our yard setup. I think this year we would have even tried pickling the rinds if given the chance. LOL Cool stuff. Thanks for the share!
I guess it would be tough to grow some types of them in a container, but a container watermelon grow would be cool to watch in progress. I'm not sure how a bush type would would work either though. We might try some other types next year. I've got a lot of thinking to do.
Both looked mighty tasty to me Mr. Jim. All that rain came at the wrong time but then again it is 2020 so nothing is doing what it should be. Thanks for the taste test. Looks like you have a big storm headed your way so batten down the hatches and stay safe over there!
They were good, but I still need to get better at this watermelon growing. Yep, 2020 is just a bad year all the way around. I know you have a big week this week, so hoping everything goes well. Stay safe and well.
Awesome review ! Both melons looked really good . For us it's hard to beat the Sugar baby watermelons for taste . We grew Banana melons last year that wasn't all that good . We like to try different types every year . We live really close to some of the biggest watermelon farmers in the country .
Thanks a bunch! Sounds like you are in the right location for it. I'm like you, I like to try different things, and next year, we might try a couple of other types.
BLISTEING WATERMELON IRL
I've got one of those growing right now I hope it's right when I pick it first time growing
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
I came to see if my Royal golden watermelon plant was healthy or dying because the oldest foliage is all a pale yellow. 😅 I almost pulled it out, but I also planted moon and stars watermelon. And if the moon and stars has yellow spots on the fruit and foliage, it got me wondering the sane thing about my royal golden. So I decided to wait it out and see. Glad I did.
I'm glad you didn't pull it! Hope you get some good ones!
I think I've eaten more watermelon this year than any other, never really grew any, plan to next year for sure. Those both looked really good.
They were good. They take up a lot of room, but they are fun to grow.
Tried the Charleston gray and it was a disaster before it got started. Got a lot of rain in late spring and the back lot just got overtaken with crabgrass. Not even a fair trial so I just ditched the effort. May try them in a raised bed in the backyard next spring where the wheat straw mulch helps out on the unwanted grass and weeds...really like the wheat straw!!!
Oh, I hate crabgrass and Bermuda grass. It's just a pain in the but. I think I might use a little more wheat straw next year too. I tried some on one of our side flower beds, and it worked out really well.
They both look delisious!
I have to try some!
Are you going to grow more next time?
They were both good. I'm thinking about trying some other types next year.
Where did u buy the yellow watermelon seeds? It looks delicious 😋
I got those for Christmas, but I think they were purchased from Gurney's.
This was very informative! What made the Royal golden taste better? Was it sweeter? I like growing Sugar Babies and Navajo Winter Melons because they like growing here and out of 6 different varieties, they did the best this year.
Thanks for the tip on the Sugar Babies and the Navajo Winter melon. Yes, the Royal Golden was a little sweeter than the other one. Too bad we didn't get more of those.
Who else tried to search RoyalMelon and this came up
Me💀 R.I.P. royal melon😭
My first ones are close to ripe, and weather is as dry as can be, so I lucked out! As long as the raccoons don't decide they want to try them, I'll be eating a melon this week. As a first-time grower of melons, I relied on 25-cent seeds this year, Charleston Gray and Crimson Sweet. The Grays are laughably large for a single person. I'll have to chop them into four pieces and give three away to neighbors.
Sounds like you are doing pretty well for a first time grower. An natural melon grower, I would say :) Those are two well known types too. Yes, this virus is leaving us with more than we usually have to try to eat....of everything. Your neighbors are probably really liking you this summer.
@@MidwestGardener Beginner's luck, I think. As for my bounty, I'm screaming STOP! at walkers and running tomatoes out to the curb. Feeding cherry tomatoes to their dogs. Bad ones go to chickens on the block. Never have I been so blase about blight before. I'm mildly grateful when another plant dies.
Lol, I can imagine :) This time of summer will wear a person out.
Hello😊if I was to plant heirloom watermelon from seed..could I save the seeds from them to grow again?thank you
Yes you can.
@@MidwestGardener thank you very much for your speedy reply and help..i appreciate that...sorry to bother you..but another question about saving summer squash or zucchini seeds...how long should I leave it on the vine to mature?I tried saving a squash for seeds..it grew big and turned yellow..i thought it was mature enough..when I picked out the seeds they were plump but when they dried..they were paper thin and empty inside..i think it was a total of 1 month that it was on the plant
Hello😊would you happen to know if crimson sweet watermelon is heirloom?thx..i hope it is cuz I would love to save seeds from them
I believe it is.
@@MidwestGardener thank you
Hi...i planted some baby sugar watermelon this year and they didn't produce any fruit...i planted them close together in a spot that receives about 6 hrs sun..they grew really long but overlapped each other.. I did remove seeds from the watermelon I grew last year..is that ok to do?also...can you plz tell me what I did wrong?thank you
I'm not sure you did anything wrong. It could be that there aren't enough pollinators for them.
@@MidwestGardener thank you
@@mystiquerose620 You're welcome.
Where did you find the seed?
The Royal Golden came from Baker Creek. The Mountain Sweet Yellow came from Gurney's.
Hi! When you started the seeds for Royal Golden, did your seedlings come up as yellow instead of green? This is my second year trying to grow it, and I'm noticing again that my Royal Golden seedlings are yellow again. LOL Thanks. :)
I don't remember them being yellow when they came up, but the plants did develop quite a bit of yellow as they matured. I hope they do well for you this year!
@@MidwestGardener Oh, that's so interesting! Fingers crossed. Thank you! :)

My question is it crumby or not?
I wouldn't call it crumby.
@@MidwestGardener ok thanks

Our watermelon plants didnt survive long enough to flower. The aphids/ants took over and destroyed them. We've tried everything to get rid of them...nothing is working. It's sad. I'm now in a battle with these pests over my pumpkins and bell peppers.
I sure hate to hear that, Erma. We don't have much trouble with ants here, but we do get some aphids on some of our older plants sometimes. It's too bad a bunch of ladybugs don't move in and take care of the aphids for you.
Inconsistent watering is why your fruit cracked.
Yep, we had tons of rain, that is probably what did it.
