out of all the watermelons I’ve grown, Orangeglo has been the best. This is the first year that I finally learned how to pick a ripe watermelon. Once the melon’s tendril turns completely brown, stop watering the plant completely, and wait a week to 10 days! I repeat, do not pick the melon once the tendril turns brown...let it ripen 7-10 days longer! Absolutely perfect each time. Sugar sweet! I definitely don’t taste the tropical flavor too much(maybe a little citrus).

I grew up with watermelons and cantaloupes (and figs, peaches, plums, corn, beans, tomatoes, etc., etc.) growing on my grandparents farm in Louisiana. The melons have a lot of parallels to fig growing. We always knew the best watermelons ripened in July/August when the rains would lessen, it would be hot and the solar energy would be at its peak. Sun makes sugar. Uneven watering can split them. Picking them is kind of an art form, we employed the "thumping" method (they should sound hollow, but solid). Under-ripe is watery and over-ripe is mealy. But perfectly vine ripened...man... There aren't many things better than that perfect fruit straight off the vine...

You said you picked that in cold weather? Well no heat=not sweet!

i was reading on watermelons the other day... they usually the plants a decent amount in the beginning until they grow and develop the melons to their full size, then they cut the water significantly to let them develop their sugars and become sweet.
and yes, i agree, the yellow/orange watermelons tasted exactly like the regular red/pink watermelons to me too... all in all, i decided not to grow any watermelons this coming summer (i'm in australia and my season has just started)

For some reason, our Orangeglos this year didn't do too well, last year was amazing. That melon you got there is not ripe enough, definitely keep trying! Plant earlier!

Hey Ross! I share your sentiment with Orangeglo. I grew 7 different types of melons here in west PA this year, including 2 watermelons (Orangeglo & Blacktail Mountain). I grew about 3 plants of each type to get a good feel for how they perform here.
Orangeglo was overall pretty mild. It's good but just mildy sweet and mildly flavorful, comparable to a store-bought watermelon. I tried some underripe, perfectly ripe, and overripe. Orangeglo gets overripe pretty quickly and is best picked at 40 days after the fruit forms. They weren't any better overripe, just more mealy. It's actually not bad picked well underripe though.
Blacktail Mountain was just better in every way. Real sweet, lots of flavor, longer picking window, earlier ripening time(70 days from seed compared to 85 for OG). It's a variety that's known to be early and relatively cold hardy and does well in the northern U.S. Not sure if I'll grow OG again next year but will definitely grow BM again.

Glad I saw your comment! I'm about an hour north of Pittsburgh and trying a few new to me varieties this year, was on the fence about this one. I haven't grown Black Tail Mountain. I've got Sugarbaby (repeat), Sangria, Gold 'n gold and Yellow Buttercup watermelon to grow this year. I'm also trying Honeycomb, Sakatas sweet, Earli dew, Savor, & El Gordo melons for the first time too. Hope a few of those are worth the effort.

@@Mike7Dean That's an interesting bunch of varieties you are trying! I hope they do well for you! I bought and traded for 7 more varieties this year, including Sakata Sweet (that one seems to be getting pretty popular). I am curious about Savor. I grew a charentais type last year called Petit Gris De Rennes and was overall disappointed with it due to how easily they would split. That seems to be a common issue with charentais types. They were really sweet and tasty melons though so it would be nice to find a variety that is more resistant to splitting. Hopefully a newer hybrid like Savor will have that issue bred out.

I just had it, and I kept thinking that if someone gave it to me with my eyes closed, I could tell it was orange, because of the taste. maybe I'm tripping

I have found that the taste descriptions on a lot of fruit I have grown have been massively exaggerated to be honest.

like figs.. get them started early and plant them early...no heat no sugars..and the ground needs to be rich and very fertile ...

Try growing a Snap Melon, those have less sugar content and need to be mixed with sugar, but the pulp melts when it is mixed with sugar making it a great experience, specially if cooled down in the fridge before eating. The only bad thing is that if you don't pick them at the right time they explode like any other fruit I've seen so far, because of their delicate flesh. The taste is similar to a melon, combined with a super ripe apple. An amazing piece of fruit, but it's too delicate to ship them, so it is very rare and unknown.

I've had pretty mediocre results growing probably 15-20 varieties of watermelon on the colder side of Z6 in western CT, though I admit I've never done any type of soil amendments. The best I've grown is a seedless variety called Farmers Wonderful from Johnny's. Extremely firm and dense (my preference for watermelon), quite sweet. A good yellow/orange variety was Gold Flower from Fedco. I've never grown a good Orangeglo here. Never that sweet, not firm enough for me. Seems like most of the good reviews of it are in the south or west coast. The best watermelons in the northeast that I've had are almost always from Amish country in PA.

Ross I have always had awesome Orangeglo, and had 9 different varieties that all were good this year. What was the brix level on your melons this year? If you have any questions on watermelon that are way better than those awful store bought melons, contact me back-Mike

It is climatic changes that have you thinking there is nothing different about this melon. In Fl, this melon shines with those tropical notes but they are subtle, and not going to jump out at you. This is not an easy melon to grow for you have to know how to get that soil on the money and also the fertilization. This melon is not ideal for Northern growers, but that should be obvious.

You might be right that its hard to outdo store bought watermelons, especially since they're seedless, and honeydews are good from the store also, but it should be easy to outdo store bought cantaloupes, because they are terrible, spongy texture, no juice, sugar or color.
