  • I've done a list of some of my top tomatoes to grow, so I thought I would do a video on my top 4 favorite sweet peppers to grow. One thing that I failed to mention in the video is that pepper number 2 is sweet most of the time, but occasionally there can be a random hot one.
    Each pepper has it's pros and cons. Some have thicker walls, and some have better flavor. Some also have more productivity. I consider all of those factors along to dependability to determine what peppers I grow. Here are my top 4 favorite peppers to grow. Thanks for watching!

    I have tried four years to grow JN and have never succeeded! I gave up.
    Shishito is our #1 for cooked sweet peppers. If just eating raw, the Sheepnose Paprika is my very favorite. Sweet, thick-walled, juicy and such an intense pepper flavor.
    Thanks, Jim! 🙏🏼

    I'm envious of your beautiful pepper plants! I have a papper leaf spot disease, My plants succumb to the disease before producing many peppers. I'm going to try and spray something this year. My pepper and tomato starts are very thin and unhealthy looking this year, except my shishito peppers. I'm probably going to start over, I hope I have better luck the second time. Have a wonderful weekend. I'm ready for some butterflies too.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

      Thanks, Shirley! Sorry to hear about the disease on your pepper plants. Hope the Shishito peppers keep going for you. Have a great weekend! Won't be long for those butterflies down your way.

    • @C3Voyage
      @C3Voyage 2 місяці тому

      Shirley, if your peppers, that have disease, are from your saved seed, it's likely coming from the seed. Google "seed-borne pepper disease" for more information. Tomatoes are even worst. New seed typically won't display the same symptoms for a bit after sitting next to diseased plants. The next probable is planting in diseased soil. I'd recommend container growing or another location a bit away from where your peppers were before. Spraying may help a little, but you can still use your seed if you "hot-water" treat them. You can Google that as well. It's ag-based science that's proven to kill disease in seed. I can explain how if it's of interest and Jim doesn't mind.

    Hi Jim. Enjoy your channel and love the peppers I see on your videos. I only have a handful of pots due to space issues. I am growing a couple of aji cachucha plants which are a popular cooking pepper in Cuba and in Puerto Rico (with a different name). I find them very tasty. The winter was mild enough in Southern California recently that these have been outside since 2022. I know I must tire my wife talking about my two tiny pepper plants as if I needed a combine to harvest them but there you have it.👍

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Burt. I'm glad you enjoy the channel. Aji Cachucha peppers are usually very productive. I've seen them for sale under the name Aji Dulce also. Keeping them alive outside since 2022 is something to be proud of! I wish we could do that here. I have overwintered a few plants indoors a couple of times, but if you accidently bring in one aphid, it can really make for a long winter. Good luck with your plants this year!

    I grow a lot of sweet pepper varieties but I added quite a few to the list to grow in 2024. Cubanelle and Shishito I'm looking forward to trying. I grew Jimmy Nardello for the 1st time in 2023 and it *IMMEDIATELY* got moved to the "must grow every season" category. They are the best tasting sweet pepper I've ever tried! Some people describe the taste as being like a sweet apple, but they taste like cherries to me.

    I agree … Jimmy Nardello is number 1 on my list. They pretty much replaced my previous favorite Shishito as the one I tossed in a skillet to eat with every meal. I also made paprika and sauces with them. One of my new favorites is Alma Paprika. I LOVE it on everything as paprika. This year I’m growing 19 pepper varieties, all sweet or mild heat … did I mention I’m the only one who eats them? I’ll be growing many different paprika types that are also supposed to be good for cooking and eating fresh. My list this year: Jimmy Nardello, Alma Paprika, Ajvarski, Sweet Apple, Venezuelan Tiger, Kalocsa Paprika, Dolmalik Biber, Kapia Paprika, Kardoula, Lipstick, Leutschauer Paprika, Aleppo, Feher Ozon, Ashe County Pimento, Txoricero, Lesya, Yavlova Yaglik, Rainforest, and if they ever germinate, Ferenc Tender and Sweet Apple Kambe. I may throw a jalapeño in the mix, if I can get one started today. It’s a little late. Don’t know where I’m going to put them all, but it looks like I might have a lot of paprika and sauces this year. If anyone has grown any of these, let me know what you think of them. All but the first three are new to me this year.

      I'm going to have to try making paprika some time. Sounds like a really nice list of peppers. Most of them I haven't tried yet....except Lesya. @@MidwestGardener Nice. I just finished planting mine a few days ago. Matt's listed your seed as F3 I believe. Is the seed F3 or was the plant the seed came from F3 which means the seed is F4? I look back on my seed all the time and wonder that same question. Honestly, I mix it up. Looks like he sold out all your seed so congrats. How did the hybrid/following generation(s) meet your expectations? If I make a cross and can't find an F2 or even F3 that's a positive, I toss the project. I call each a project--dwarf project, paste project, etc. Great to bend the ear of a like-minded breeder.

      @MidwestGardener  2 місяці тому

      @@C3Voyage The seed is F3 from F2 peppers. I only planted a few, so I really didn't have enough plants to get a good feel for the potential. One thing that I can tell you is that all of the peppers that I ate from those plants tasted good. Without a side by side comparison, I can't say for sure that any of them tasted better than either parent. I sometimes end up with multiple projects from the same cross. Another thing I noticed from that cross is that they seemed to be very productive as you would expect. I'll be looking forward to seeing how those do for you.

    I don't much enjoy peppers, but I'm jealous of your big healthy plants, and substantial production! We can only dream of plants that big and healthy here in Northern BC. We've got several inches of slush out there right now. I don't have a greenhouse, or lights for indoor starting, so I'm just sitting on my seeds and shovels.
    What is blistering? From context, it sounds like it means gently frying?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 місяці тому

      Yes, I'm sure it is quite a challenge to grow peppers in your location. Peppers like it warm, and we go from cold to hot very quickly some years. Blistering is basically cooking the pepper until the skin has some spots that start to look overcooked. It really brings out the flavor. It also turns the pepper from crunchy to much softer in texture.

    I concur with putting Jimmy Nardello at or near near the top of the list. I prefer them fully ripe but fresh, especially around September when they are both sweet and tangy at the same time (with peppers, tanginess comes primarily from Vitamin C). I've also grown Shishito and Aconcagua (which is huge and productive by weight, but only a little tastier than bell peppers). Corbaci , which I learned about here, is very long and very tasty, with a more complex and "earthy" flavor than Jimmy Nardello, and I am looking forward to your Jimmy Nardello x Corbaci cross this year.
    I also enjoy some heatless peppers from other species. From C. Baccatum I've had great productivity from "Aji Delight" and "Aji Fantasy", which take longer to get rolling but both have a wonderful fruity taste. Finally, last year I managed to grow a heatless Tabanero (Tabasco x Habanero). I hope its descendants are as nice as last year's -- sweet, juicy, thick-walled, shaped like a pudgy cayenne; if they are repeatable they could become a new favorite like their hotter cousins already are in my household.

      If you get that heatless Tabanero stabilized, I think you will have something there. I hope that Jimmy Nardello x Corbaci cross gives you something to work with. There are so many good ones out there. It's really hard to choose just a few.
