  • netflixs problem with consent | Bridgerton, Umbrella Academy, Sienna Mae
I don't know if it's just me, but I've seen a concerning Trend with a lot of Netflix's most popular TV series that I really feel like needs to be discussed. In this video, I will be talking about the concept of consent and how Netflix and its most popular shows have a weird relationship with proper consent. If you're interested in my deep dive, watch until the end. I promise you won't regret it.

That "couldn't and wouldn't" line just FILLS ME WITH RAGE with how unreasonable and victim-blaming it is.
Like, "couldn't" is PERFECTLY FAIR AND ACCURATE. If someone's married and someone else flirts with them, the usual response is "I can't, I'm married". Not won't, CAN'T. If someone's vegetarian or vegan, and you offer them meat, they don't say "I won't eat that," they say "I can't eat that." I drink alcohol sometimes, but once or twice a year I'll avoid alcohol for a month, and when I tell people "oh, no thank you, I can't have a beer because I'm doing a dry month," NO ONE has ever said "well you COULD, you just won't."
It is absolutely fair and normal to say "I can't" purely on the basis of a promise you've made to yourself, and the fact that Daphne tries to pretend otherwise to use incorrect pedantry to justify her actions is just reprehensible.

What Daphne did is flat out reproductive coercion. In my eyes that's WORSE than rape.
I really think Allison has no concept of consent. I'm really disappointed in how she s*x**lly assaulted Luther in Season 3, after spending years in a healthy, consensual relationship with Ray Chestnut. And to answer 16:30, ABSOLUTELY. In fact, in season 1, her flashback while driving included all the times she "rumored" things to get her way, from "I heard a rumor I was perfect for the role", which got her her movie star status at the beginning of the show, to "I HEARD A RUMOR YOU LOVED ME", likely directed at her ex-husband. She was court-ordered to go to therapy for visitation rights for a VERY good reason. As for Luther not talking about this, I think he didn't want to drive another wedge in their already unraveling family, or risk his newfound happiness by something he had no control over. Luther has always been conflict-averse after all.

Thank you so much for commenting! It was literally infuriating to see Allison, completely spiral the way she did in season three of umbrella academy. I really hope that Netflix doesn’t just slide over the trauma that Luther went through this season because I feel like male victims deserve to be taken seriously and I hope Luther get more character development in terms of that.
The fact that I continually have to tell people the reproductive coercion is bad is very alarming to me, and I’m glad that you were able to get my points on that.

@@ellapastoral So many people just don't have a concept of consent and bodily autonomy, at least not in other people, it's terrifying.

Quick tangent: I’d been following the depp v heard case since the uk trial in 2020, and was highly anticipating the VA trial-watched ~90% of it. My mom works across the street from the courthouse where the trial took place, at the hotline for victims of SA, so the case hit very close to home (quite literally), despite not being that huge of a depp fan.
I did laugh at the memes, but also felt so icky about how many there were-it felt like a train just to hate on a woman because HEY LOOK THIS ONE DESERVES IT or something. And like, yeah, I do think Amber is a complete liar and deserves to be shamed into oblivion, but I’m very wary of anyone who says the same who hasn’t delved into that case the way I did.
Once again, stellar video, Ella ❤

Thank you so much for commenting again! And yeah you voiced my opinions exactly! I personally don’t like Amber heard at all but seeing the way everyone was so quick to throw her under the bus and literally make fun of her r*** testimony was extremely alarming to me ! 😨

It’s been implied that Allison had made her the first ex-husband/baby daddy fall in love with her, by saying the phrase “I heard a rumor that you love me”.

I was scrolling through this channel and landed on this. And after watching this, it just affirmed my opinion. I am also someone that reads as well. And seeing this often in visual and reading material just hurts.
