They keep applying terms such as “anti-hero” to the wrong characters because they don’t understand how storytelling works and what these terms actually mean.

Kimiko and black noir dont speak because their characters are literally traumatised. Black noir's head was punched in, and he did get lines during flash backs and the voices in his head during his hallucinations. Kimiko on the other hand is also silent due to PTSD. Their silence just adds to their character.

I made this video before watching the new season but I’m glad to see movement in their character development
I mentioned all those points in my video I just wish we had more of those scenes. In season 4 I like how they have developed kimiko with her being able to communicate more people and how she is finally being shown to see a speech therapist

It’s a show designed for mature audiences, the fact immature people who buy into the show for the wrong reasons isn’t the showrunners fault, I watch the show and I consider it very good quality, homelanders acting is outstanding same as many others in the show but unlike most I’m 22 and able to rationalise and understand how these characters are broken or just plain evil, I understand what you mean but it’s a fictional show remember guys! If the audience isn’t mature enough to watch it there isn’t much you can do. Stay blessed lady takes guts to speak out against the masses even if I mostly disagree you have my respect.
I find it kinda weird they think the person who killed a innocent father and son ( I think ) at the end of the pilot and unnecessary probably killed a blind guy cause he was in a bad mood as the good guy ??? It kinda concerning that anybody calls him a hero unironcially
@@thesodaman3801 that’s just there to hammer home the point proving that these people are not heroes, that’s why they need to be taken care of in the show, they’re meant to be bad people to make their comeuppance satisfying, I understand the stuff they do isn’t pleasant to watch, and I consistently watch the show and at age 22 and having played years of violent games such as mortal kombat I still flinch at the show, it’s just a well written story with a whole lot of shock value :)

Good video. Yeah, the lack of media literacy among conservatives who watch the show is astonishing. The show has been political from day 1. The show has always been critical of capitalism, fundamentalist christianity, celebrity culture, and bigotry. Superheroes in The Boys are like a combination of police and celebrities, and the main characters fight against superheroes. Its never been very subtle or anything.
The show is also critical of insincere CORPORATE activism. Conservatives have misinterpreted this criticism as the show being "anti-woke" or anti-feminist. In actuality, the show is critical of the corporate part.
Although I agree about many aspects of this video, I do have a few constructive criticisms.
3:55 "Homelander has no weaknesses". Homelander lacking physical weaknesses is kind of the point of the show. Part of the idea of the show is "What if Superman was evil". Homelander being almost invulnerable (just like Superman) is part of the premise. It also makes him a scarier villain. Many scenes which involve Homelander are very tense because you know that almost any human or super is not a physical threat against him. He can kill almost anyone he wants and very few people can stop him. Tons of stories have villains with overwhelming power, making the heroes the underdogs. Part of the reason they do that is it increases the threat the villain poses.
Although Homelander has very view physical weaknesses, he has several psychological weaknesses. His biggest weakness is his massive insecurity. Homelander needs to be adored and praised at all times. Deep down, he hates himself and needs the approval of others to feed his massive chasm of insecurity. He protends to be confident and self assured but in actuality his ego is extremely fragile. He is a hollow person, with a personality barely kept together with constant praise. Outside of his massive insecurity, he is also impulsive, emotionally volatile, immature, possessive and lacks any self awareness. He is a giant man-child who likes to cosplay as an angry god. These many psychological weaknesses come in to play several times throughout the show.
4:55 Soldier boy is a walking nuclear bomb. He leaks radiation and literally blows up every time he feels strong emotions. He kills several innocent in season 3 and would have killed more if he wasn't stopped. Butcher plans to use him because he wants to kill Homelander by any means, fighting fire with fire. The point of the season is that this approach is heavily flawed. Using this extreme method to get rid of Homelander does more harm then good. MM hates Soldier boy for personal reasons but many of the other members of The Boys join his side because they realize this method kills too many people. Near the end, Butcher is the only member of The Boys still willing to work with him because Butcher hates Homelander he will go to almost any length to kill him. He only changes his mind at the last minute because Soldier boy threatens Ryan, one of the few living people that Butcher deeply cares about.
Fighting against Soldier boy isn't "helping Homelander". Fighting Soldier boy is preventing Butcher from going too far and killing more innocents.
5:56 I don't remember Marie Munroe winning any fights against Homelander, or even hurting him. At the end of season 1 of Gen V, Homelander shows up, shoots her with one laser blast and she wakes up in the hospital. Marie is powerful, yes. Its surprising she survived a laser blast and shows how strong she is. But I don't think she is at Homelander's level. Victoria Newman has the same powers as Marie but is more experienced and I don't think she can kill Homelander. I doubt Maire could kill him.
9:04 Kimiko is mute. She has a disability. I don't think its fair to criticize her character for being disabled. I think we need more disabled representation in media, including well rounded characters like Kimiko. Kimiko does share her opinions and viewpoints in the show, through sign language. Using sign language is just as valid as speaking a spoken language. Due to her messed up past, she had to develop her own version of sign language. Using local or personal sign languages was fairly common among hearing impaired and mute people before more formalized kinds of sign language (like ASL) where developed. informal sign languages still exist in real life. Not every disabled person who needs a sign language to communicate are given access to the education needed to learn more formal sign languages.
Kimiko also does get her own fantasy sequences. For example, in season 3, she gets a musical sequence.
If your issue is that Kimiko is both asian and disabled, she is not the only fictional character who is both. Netflix has a fantasy show called The Dragon Prince. One of the characters in that show is named Amaya. Amaya is both asian-coded and deaf. She uses sign language to communicate. Dragon Prince was widely praised for the inclusion of the character Amaya. Many irl disabled people liked having a character using sign language. It helps to normalize this form of communication that many disabled people use.
Black Noir was also a disabled character. It is heavily implied he lost the ability to speak after receiving brain damage from Soldier boy. In real life, brain damage can impede someone's ability to speak. As far as I know, Noir doesn't use formal sign language. This makes sense because Vought wouldn't be willing to give him the help he needed to accommodate his disability. Vought only cares about money. Noir's life is tragic. He was a marginalized person who wanted to make it big as a superhero. He learned the hard way that the system would never let someone like him make it to the top. He was used as a prop, a corporate tool, and then quickly discarded and replaced when he wasn't useful. This plays into the wider themes of the story.
3:55 Superman had a huge physical weakness with his whole kryptonite thing, and he has his own interpersonal weaknesses with him being afraid that his personal life will be exposed. I do agree with the rest of your analysis.

1. I still think Homelander not having a kryptonite makes him a scarier villain. It would be a different story if he was the hero of the story. Most stories don't have completely invulnerable heroes because conflict makes stories interesting and completely invulnerable heroes are harder to write in an interesting way. Villains, on the other hand, can be written as super powerful because it gives the hero more to overcome. Most of The Boys are powerless and their goal is to defeat the most powerful super. Thats interesting.
2. Yeah, I do admit that season 3 had some flaws on the execution of their ideas. Many found the final battle a bit confusing and rushed and thats fair. It hit for me personally but to each their own.
3. Ok. I just misunderstood what you were saying. I could totally see Marie playing a part in Homelander's takedown.
4. I agree that Kimiko needs more scenes and focus. Its season 4 and only now are we really getting into her backstory in any depth. I think her and Frenchie get "put on the back burner" a lot. I know what happens to them in the comics and I hope they don't adapt that in the show. I want them both to have a happy ending. In general, I think the show is good about changing the source material to make it better. The original story is edgy non-sense meant to shock.

I tried watching the boys when it first came out and within the first few episodes I knew they’d never actually take homelander down. Cause that would mean taking down the system. But Gen V’s sounding pretty good right now🤔💖
They are going to take Homelander down in the final season.
You're not wrong, it does entail taking down the system. Throughout the show they also manage to get some licks in on him by manipulating his reputation. The show ends next season, Homelander was always intended to be defeated in the final season.

Okay..... Im gonna try to address some of these points not to change your mind but to give more context:
"Homelander has no weakness"
The thing is he does have a weakness.... his ego. He's not mentally stable. He wants a family but he literally can't function as a normal person cause well he isn't. The minute someone opposes him he wants to kill them. He lets his emotions guide him way to much with that much power he has.
"The Boys teaming up with Homelander to fight Soldier boy"
The only reason why Billy teamed up with Homelander was because Soldier Boy was going to ALSO kill Ryan. The Boys wanted to stop Soldier Boy from potential destroying the tower and killing folks since him and homelander fighting could potentially do that. Maeve still wanted to put Homelander down so thats why they where fighting. Soldier Boy started to fight everyone else cause they essentially turned on him.
"Kimiko being not talking"
They kinda explained in the show/books that due to her trauma she doesn't speak.... Its not to fulfill some fetish.... not to mention She literally be killing folks.... she is like that....
"Black Noir"
I agree about the Justice for Black Noir since honestly they kinda killed him off pretty quickly but lets not forget that he's been HL's friend since the start. This means he's been compliant with ALOT of heinous things. Also the show doesn't really treat him badly.... He's the only character Homelander likes and he's just an Assassin doing Assassin things... like we learned why he's mute too. He's a tragic character who I will admit did bad for with the way he went out but I take solace in that he's no longer in this shtty world. Also for the record comic Black noir was way WAY worse....
last thing I'll mention im regards to the Mute characters. If they are written to be mute.... then that's their role in the story... I guess you can have a problem with that but I feel like that's not really a problem if they are written like that. Like yes this is way better than the comic but some things can not be just wrote out especially as something small as side characters being mute....

damn I watched until 5:53 and already so many things to correct. First of all obviously you either watched the entire show and didnt pay enough attention or just didnt care enough about it since you dont remember most of the stuff. Homelander's dad was going to kill Butcher's son along with homelander which is why butcher had to stop him, and the whole point of butcher not taking the shot at killing homelander using brute force methods(such as a virus that will kill all the supes) is that its immoral(or atleast its a moral dilemma). Butcher's wife rebecca said it best in the latest episode "You are going to kill one homelander only to end up with another". Which is exactly the point, as the problem with homelander is the problem with the system which gave birth to him, and which will just replace homelander with some another lab experiement to take this place and wreck havock. Its like getting a fever due to an infection and just using ice packs, the "evil" supes are a symptom of a fucked up system, killing them will do nothing until the system is changed itself - all of this is not to say that homelander doesnt need to be stopped. He does, but the entire show revolves around these moral dilemmas, like is killing all the supes(mass genocide) worth killing homelander?

Thank you for your commentary, I agree with what you are saying about the morality and the cycle of abuse, but as a show watcher IDK how long I can watch Homelander over and over miraculously be saved you know. It’s obvious to us as people who watch the show that the child is the biggest weakness. Luckily, we have one more season, but I hope they can wrap it up because it’s kind of getting repetitive.

As someone who enjoys the show, I'm going to steer clear of tiktok because of the misogyny, racism and lack of media literacy.
1. With Erin M. The hate she is getting over her face is insanely disgusting and I am so tired I cant imagine how she feels about it.
2. Homelander, The Deep and Soldier boy are obvious VILLIANS. Im tired of the defense they get, I get that the actors that play them have a lot of charisma but they've all done heinous things.. You made a good point about how people call them antiheros when they're not. The only antihero in the boys is probably Billy Butcher or A-Train with his new direction.
3. The homophobia against Frenchie was also so off putting as well (even though I don't like the actor for many reasons)

I like it best when Black Noir didn’t talk it made him more mysterious and place fear. But that was the reason for the mask as young Edgar told him because it gave him an edge until he had no choice because of the explosion that messed up his face. I was so pissed when Butcher and Huey start taking compound V total hypocrisy 🤦🏽♀️
I don’t see Sage last g for very long only because by her being so smart she knows what can kill Homelander which is why I’m surprised he kept her around for as long as he has.
So I totally agree that The Boys’ fandom is an absolute dumpster fire and way too many people both missed the point of the show and wound up ideologically aligning with the exact wrong takeaway. That said, I would like to argue that the problem with Homelander’s existence isn’t a fundamental one, as in the idea that his fictional existence serves no purpose and only exists to harm. Like, yes, if one were to treat Homelander as a genuine heroic figure, they’d be very obviously in the wrong, but I do believe the character’s existence still holds relevance. The largest difference between Homelander and Superman is that the latter was allowed to grow up as a human and develop that fundamental human connection that drives him to protect others while the former was groomed to be a weapon of the American government. The ideals Homelander was raised with were purely antithetical to Superman’s and I believe that to be the point; in the attempt to train Homelander to be like Superman, Homelander better represents “the American way” than Superman ever could precisely because Homelander wasn’t raised to value genuine truth or legitimate justice. Homelander serves as a warning to the corruption unfettered American exceptionalism will inevitably give way to. At the end of the day, Homelander as a warning of the end results of imperialist endeavors feels like the most apt interpretation, but that is just my take, I could still be missing more as to what makes Homelander less effective as a thematic tool than I realized

Homelander does have weaknesses, that is what all the problem solving is about in the show: his emotional state, insecurities, his son, the virus, his dad's (radioactiveness? not sure what his dad was), he's aging so there is an unknown factor of his limits, there is some stuff in comicbook but I don't want to spoil if they do decide to go in that direction. But I hear what you are saying because I felt that way about the father from Invincible.

I'm a big fan of Homelander because he's just so much fun to watch. He's unpredictable and intense much like Heath Ledger's Joker but that's it. I'm a fan but not because I'm rooting for him or support and agreeing with his goals or motivations. No, he's a monster and I want to watch him be a monster but I in no way want him to win. I am black and i love Homelander. Yes i know he's a villlain but he's also a fictional character who's purpose is to ENTERTAIN. And he is very entertaining. Have you read the comics? It's a good read if you are able to handle the disgusting parts. It really accompanied me during really bad moments in my life, and everybody seem to only see the weird part of it. Starlight character development and her relationship with Hugh it's really smartly written. I haven't seen the last season nor finished the third series because it's such a mess, they took everything good from the comic to make a satire about our times, that is genuinely good, but Homelander was supposed to be this boyfailure that really made you feel bad about him. I know it has a lot of messed up stuff but I think that's only part of the characters, the author never intends to make seem Butcher like a good person and during all the story it's shown in really subtle ways, yet he helps Hugh in his own way. It's a really smart satire, it shows us character that are completely flawed, yet in their own bad moments they help eachother and try to become better, even we see Homelander struggling with his own consiousnes over what he does, and I really don't want to spoiler anybody about it because it's such an important piece of art for me. The series doesn't have anything that made me stay with the comics, it's the superficial part of it; the heroes being bad, Homelander being generally insane, he doesn't even have something to work with, you try to actually understand the character and it only seems to be a really poorly written character. The comic takes his time to make you see more about him, specially on their spin-offs, there is such a work put into all of the characters that make you understand that none of them are perfect, and it's such a brilliant way to not even let you idolize not even the protagonists (except Starlight i love her). Anyway my native language isn't english so im ending this nonsense here and i agree completely with all you said because i hate the show. well no because mk backstory is a story about poverty and yes, it is disgusting, yet i think it's very human. i don't want to make a whole deal about it i just really like it. it's a very special comic for me. tl;dr i hate the adaptation it's a really poorly fanfic I KNOW its shouldnt be supposed to be the same. yet it's doesn't look like anything. well there are good chapters. end of it

Homelanders weakness is his psychology. It hasnt killed him, yet, but its the way people have controlled him and its something he repeatedly fails to remedy. I assume his insecurity wil ultimatly be used to trick him into hurting himself and thats how theyll rake him down. What i hope happens, is that he loses his powers and has to know what its like to be normal and weak, before Butcher stomps his head in.

They didn't hide black Noir's face cause he was black they hid his face because he had a severe head injury he got in the 80s that also prevented him from speaking. Homelander mentions multiple times that black noir is black in the show in public. Kimiko is not really apart of that stereotyoe because aside from her character not speaking due to trauma, she is a strong women who can stand on her own. Her development is slow but this season is showing progress in regards to her coming face to face with her trauma
Homelander does NOT mention him being black multiple times, stop making shit up. The closest we get is when he's on the talk show & he says that Noir doesn't identify with any race (Which is kind of the opposite, but it seemed like he almost slipped up & outed Noir as being black)
Also, at first it WAS because he was black. We see that very clearly in the s3 flashback. We don't know if Vought would have continued doing that if he hadn't gotten scarred, but it literally started because of him being black

I have literally never heard anyone complain about marie monroe. Maybe I am just not on the alt right side of tweeter. There's always a mixed demographic of people involved in any fanbase. If you spend a lot of time engaging with political content you're bound to meet that section of the fanbase which is politically extreme, however thats definitely not the case with most of the fandom. yes the show gets people talking about political issues but the majority of people who watch it right now just do it for pure entertainment not for any political analysis of the show. And Marie Monroe couldn't hurt homelander because she has the exact same powers as victoria neuman who most probably has tried to hurt homelander but couldn't which is why she had her husband working on a virus to kill homelander, because if she could do it herself she would have done it by now. Homelander is the peak supe, the only supes that come close to him or could surpass him are ryan(his son) and soldier boy. Either way homelander not having any immediate weakness just makes the show more interesting.

I really think it's not the show, but public response that's the problem. And you have people who liked the comics unironically who are now hating the changes. The show is showing people we already don't like, doubt or seem of poor morals, rooting for Homelander. Those we are more or less to side with aren't perfect, they're very flawed, but they are against the whole corporation, which, is also a big message that no matter how disgusting any one character is, the mess traces back to a profiteering corporation. The show-runners have come out against anyone propping up Homelander. But we live in a time where people wanna go "maybe those people running gaschambers had a point" or "well I've never seen it, so how do I believe it".
The comic is disgusting and really takes me back to late high school early college when guys just watched, laughed at and read the most violent and offensive things for kicks. That's who, if anyone not a bot or troll stirring up emotions now after 3.5 seasons, wants to suggest admiration. We mocked those advisory stamps on media, but I think it's better to have them and people have to deal with them, and that even some technical adults are not mature.
