Y'all wanted me to discuss Chinese drama so bad and I couldn't ignore y'all . Here you guys go. ua-cam.com/video/X6KWRudBOcw/v-deo.html. This is a very short video talking about Ruyi's love in the palace.
I've found a fellow traveler on this road. The only other black girl I know other than my best friend into Chinese dramas; especially the imperial ones
I don’t think there’s a UA-cam audience for it for real 😭😭😭
im here!! i am the audience 😭🙋🏾♀️
Plus meeeeee!!! 😂
ME TOO!! I swear it's so good and interesting and people be hating on me 😂
MEEEE
The historical context is very much so appreciated
But I wish there was an imperial drama where they work together for there own means and the prosperity of their House.
Ruyi is kinda like that but the misogyny doesn’t let me be great 😭😭
Meng fei comes across sounds similar to what your looking for
@ayequeen6321 Yeah, you know what else does this kind of dinanic in Shogun lord Toranaga's wives have this sort of understanding.
You should watch New Life Begins
@@TheNaturalStateTX New Life Begins is truly elite
My cousins turned me onto K and C dramas. SO WORTH IT!!!
So worth it 🥹🥰🥰

I recently been watching an older Chinese drama called The legend of Haolan. You are correct that the plot is very detailed. I also noticed alot of interesting features such as the expression of intimacy was very restrained, sickness was always indicated by coughing followed by the vomiting of blood etc.
That’s my favorite trope lol when they start coughing up blood, I’m like yeah it’s serious
I’m think TB must have been common
The hialan one is not accurate, their characters are actually from a book, hailan started out as a palace maid but was r-worded by the emperor, hence her fear of him. Hailan was not affiliated with a tribe that benefitted the emperor, like how Ruyis clan helped with the water ways before her father passed, which is why her ranking was low until she gave birth. All low ranking concubines are paired with senior concubines but they have their own individual sections of places within those properties, so it's different than being a maid by a lot. Hailan wasn't mistreated due to being lowley but because she was not in the emperor's favor and was a friend of Ruyis, the favorite and the original choice for empress before dramaaaaa.
I think she was getting mistreated because she had no favor with the emperor and the fact that she was lowly. For example, with consort ling, we eventually see history replaying itself, and even when she is favored by the emperor, they always use her past of being a maid against her.
@@ellapastoralShe also really hated the emperor cause SA. The novel was way darker
They also bullied her because they wanted to get at Ruyi. .
Girl i haven’t even watched the video yet but I’ve already subbed and liked🤍 love love watching another black girl enjoying Chinese drama as well ✨
Thank you I very much appreciate the support 🥰🥰
This is my 1st visit to your channel and as an avid watcher of Korean and Chinese dramas, I enjoyed the video! I also wanted to share some dramas you might enjoy watching like "The Story of Ming Lan", "The Story of Yanxi Palace", "The Uncanny Destiny", "Princess Weiyoung", "The Story of Kunning Palace", "Destined", "Love Like the Galaxy", "The Rise of Phenixes", "The Sword and the Brocade", "The Moon Embracing the Sun", "Empress Ki", "Jewel in the Crown", just to name a few.
I'm a cdrama fan but I recently got into harem dramas and ur video just came on my recommended it's so straightforward and simple❤
I’m glad I was able to help you and you like the video 💗💗
I love Chinese and Korean Historical dramas! The Imperial harem system for both countries changes in rach dynasty, but they have similarities as well
FINALLY i found my PPL !!!
i really love that you really did your research for this 🤍 most of the information in this video is quite accurate although i have to add that : 1. the rank after consort is actually noble consort, not an imperial consort.
2. after you attained the rank imperial concubine, you would be considered as the emperor's formal concubine, hence, the lower ranking concubines & servant should adressed you as your highness (niang niang). and the part when you said that imperial concubine can own a palace is mostly true unless someone with rank consort or higher already resided in your assigned palace. which means the palace you're living in is still under their supervision unless you are moved into a palaces without mistresses.
3. women with rank imperial concubines and consort are able to used sedan chair too altough it will be carried with less people since the numbers of eunuch & maids that are given to them are less than noble consort and higher.
i love your work by the way, please keep it up 🖤✨
Thank you for your corrections! I am literally obsessed with harem animes, harem comics, harem TV shows so I tried my best to
I'm really happy to see another black girl talking about this but there are a couple of misconceptions/mistakes. For example, Concubines (pin) and Consorts (Fei) are also given sedan chairs. I look forward to watching your other videos on Chinese dramas!
Also, just to add, your clan's status also played a part in your ranking and how others respected you. For example, Hailan came from a low status and was also just a servant who worked in the sewing department. Many of the other concubines treated her horribly due to her family clan and her literally becoming a part of the imperial harem, even if the emperor had forced himself on her.
Yes that’s why the first imperial noble consort was even in that position 😭 the emperor did not like her like that
To add the main factor being that she was so close to Ruyi. Hailan would’ve not caught as much hell as she did had she not had had such a sisterly bond with Ruyi.
video was MADE FOR ME!!! *YESS* THANK YOU QUEEN
PLS discuss chinese dramas. they hit so differently compared to other shows in both positive and negative ways, theyre like a perfect lure for fem ppl to get into
I really would, but I’ve made two videos about Chinese dramas and they both done terrible in the algorithm🤧
First of all, your lashes are epic and gorgeous! Second of all, can’t stop watching these dramas, just love anyone who can provide context. Brilliant, bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, my friend Harryianna hook gave these to me. You can find them on her shop by googling her name. And yes, I love Chinese dramas not a lot of English speakers speak on them and analyze them so I try to do my part.
@@ellapastoral it was so good! I wish I’d found you even earlier. You are so good at providing clear context. 😁
Never watched dramas before but the way you talk about it makes me wanna watch 😂
No, seriously it’s some of the most messiest things you will watch
I haven’t even started the video and I’m so happy to meet yall. I’ve been hooked on Chinese dramas for like 3 months now!!! Lmao 😅
Ranks, lowest to highest in an Imperial Harem during the Qing Dynasty: 8. Second Class Attendant 7. First Class Attendant 6. Noble Lady 5. Imperial Concubine 4. Consort 3. Noble Consort 2. Imperial Noble Consort (usually seen as equal in authority to the Empress, or appointed to manage the Imperial Harem if there is no Empress) 1. Empress or, 8. Daying 7. Chanzai 6. Guiren 5. Pin 4. Fei 3. Gui Fei 2. Huang Gui Fei 1. Huang hou
Chinese drama content creators are like 2 on the platforms, so happy we get a new one even only from time to time. also you're soooo pretty and your make up is bomb!
No seriously I was like where is everyone 😭😭
Sword and the brocade. Generals lady and story of ming lan are some of my favorites! Also rebel princess….ive watched so many that i lowkey picked up a bit of Chinese/mandarin
The algorithm feeding me well tonight 🙌🙌🙌
I DK how the algorithm has slowly started in my favor but God please let this continue
LASHES ARE GIVING ALPHA CC I LOVE
lol thank you 😭💕💕
Harem battles where the Mom's are killing people to help their sons are wild. My favorite are when the son doesn't want to be emperor and learns what their mom has been doing. Which usually evolves trying to kill their love interest.
Yanxi palace and Ruyis royal love were loosely based on the same story, yingluo is the good guy and ruyi is the bad guy in Yanxi, and in Ruyis royal love, ruyi was the good guy and yingluo the bad guy (she's the one who killed a bunch of royal children and concubines)
Yes when I found that out I was shocked I watch yanxi palace first 😭😭😭
@@ellapastoral So there was real life drama about this. Ruyi love in palace is based on a very famous novel, and the production is very expensive. BUT due to a controversial law, it was not able to broadcast. Yanxi Palace is made by a very infamous producer who took advantage of Ruyi being in limbo, and created a story spin-off from Ruyi's story, using the same character set-up. Well he's infamous because although his method is underhanded, he actually make very addictive and beautiful drama. And Yanxi palace became a huge hit. This is the SECOND time he done this, to steal thunder from a HIGHLY anticipated drama.
PLEASE talk about more dramas!! black girl drama fans rise UP!
Thank you guys so much for blowing this video up. I’m going to try to talk more about these dramas because I have no one else to talk to them about.
I also recommend war and beauty, it's a Qing Dynasty harem drama produced in hong kong. I would like to consider this show as the grandaddy of Qing Dynasty harem dramas
YES! Hong Kong TVB's War and Beauty (2004) was groundbreaking. It is still my favourite. The later harem dramas like Zhen Huan, Ruyi and Yanxi Palace were more epic in scale and i enjoyed them too (especially Ruyi, Yanxi not so much) but the story arcs and acting in War and Beauty were riveting from start to finish.
I love this. Please do more of these
I love your makeup!
Thank you 💕💕
I've watch Ruyi's Royal Love at *least* 5 times ... the entire series, laughing harder, crying louder cheering my favorites and cussing the fiends with more conviction each time. Beautiful sets and food for thought. ❤
Just a small issue, you're kind of understanding the difference and privilege in ranks.
1. The first class and second class attendants were not treated so badly. Yes, if you got into trouble with someone high ranked you will be gone. Yes, you can't order servants unless they are yours , but you are still the Emperor's lady, and any inferior disrespectful to them would still be punished
.
2. Noble ladies were Wayyy better off than Changzai. Unlike the earlier dynasties, the Qing highly limited the harem Size and made the ranks very defined and different from each other . A noble lady was allowed to wear more colours, and jewellery , eat better food( yes you had to be worthy to eat certain food) and were given more servants. Any Promotion was significant.
3.the differences between all ranks were highly significant due to a much smaller harem Size. Unlike the tang and ming, the Qing only allowed certain women to join , with preference for Manchu and mongols. This meant the number of women was quite less , hence every harem member was given a lot of attention. (This led to the Qing royal family being the smallest royal family, with only 12,000 Aisin Goro clansmen in the 19th century. Compare that to the millions of the tang ).
There were definitely schemes and forgotten women, but it was much less dramatic than in Yanxi or RRLP. Most princes and concubines died of illness, and it was rather hard to do anything without people noticing. So take the dramas with a grain of salt.
(Funfact, yanwan is more historically accurate than yingluo personality wise, and Qianlong is more accurately depicted in yanxi )
Can you please remind me who qianlong is please right now it’s escaping me but thank you for your corrections. As I said I watch a lot of Chinese dramas, but some of these women do not be happy when they begin to climb the hair because it isn’t an exponential increase in quality of life, even though things change for them for example consort ling. Things are for sure dramatized in cdramas for example all the witchcraft stuff but it’s interesting to watch and see
@@ellapastoral Qianlong is the emperor in both Yanxi and RRLP
@@ellapastoral I guess the unhappy women are generally Manchu Or Mongol women, who would always aim for the top 5 spots to increase their Clan's importance. If you've watched any Ming or Tang dynasty dramas (where the men aren't head shaved) then it makes more sense, because in these dynasties even commoners were allowed in, so harem sizes were large, and the difference between ranks was very minor, with Emperor's often creating new ones to promote favourites when high ranks were filled up. In fact the names or individual titles given to concubines in the Qing dynasty (like Consort Xian , Concubine Shu and concubine Mei in RRLP) were actually the names of entire ranks occupied by multiple women at once in earlier dynasties. The best modern equivalent is if a school decided to keep as few teachers as possible and then make them change their official name to HS History teacher, primary History teacher , middle school math teacher , primary math teacher, etc., with the schools level being the rank and the subject becoming the name 3veryone calls them 💀.
On the other hand, being an Indian guy, I'm glad to see other non chinese interested in c dramas.
Also Ruyi was being dragged literally everywhere around the Chinese social media right now. That show as a whole did not age well at all
This show was my first Chinese drama that showed me that everyone did not get a happy ending
I love Cdramas, especially imperial and fantasy. you are so right, they are very intricate/in depth, i have to rewind many times to or look up episode summary to really understand lol. I just finished watching yanxi palace and I am currently watching empresses in the palace so this video has been very helpful in regards to ranks.
Oh, I LOVE Harem Dramas! They are so full of backstabbing and revenge.
And their hyper feminine too
A video made for the gorls! Thank you ❤
💕💕
Love this video! It really does all get confusing, so appreciate this. Love your voice too, its so soothing to hear.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed the video
Clicked for the topic, stayed for the discussion! Also, your beauty reminds me of Kimberly from A Different World! I was wondering where I saw you before because it felt so familiar!!! Anyway, thank you for your video!
Thank you for watching I never watched a different world but Kimberly looks like she could be my aunt
@@ellapastoral Oh, maybe you could give the show a shot sometime! Nevertheless, I'm glad you also see the resemblance. :3
Also, I look forward to more videos from you, subscribed!
Wow, you educated me on things i should know. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing
The content I've wanted
Thank you so much. I love harems dramas too. While i agree the sexism is thick, there are a few ways women stuck out and were exceptionally clever. ❤ ive found a like mind . Have you seen blooming days it has many similar mechanics too.
Yes I love seeing women win 😭😭
Yanzi Palace is one of the best C-Dramas. I don’t really watch Western entertainment any more.
Yes 😭😭😭
Historically, the harem was chill because the women feared the negative consequences of fighting.
Those soaps are over the top for the sake of views. Many historical figures weren't the heartless wenches portrayed in the dramas - empress Xiaoxian, consort Gao, Consort Xian, Consort Ling.
Only few cases were wild, like the case of Wu Zetian who became the ruler of China as a woman(the drama is crap, better read historical accounts or watch documentaries). The first empress of China Lu Zhi, who tortured her rival than fed her to pigs.
There was also an empress who forced the concubines to a*bort so none will bare a child, a concubine did gave birth to a son in secret and gave him away to be raised by an eunuch or some officials, the son of that concubine was the only monogamous emperor of China.
Empress Cixi who ruled China as a woman and fought to modernize China.
Oh I know for a fact that these dramas are dramatized versions of history but for example with the ulanara empress we know she had a bed end because of the fact that post humorously she didn’t get a title everything else is left to history I also know harem life wasn’t easy because if you look at consort ling we eventually found of her bones were poisoned
@@ellapastoralwe don’t know if it was intentional, most people consumed stuff that wasn’t good for them
I need to mention, don't trust drama to reflect reality, some of the stuff in dramas mixed Ming and Qing customs. During Qing dynasty, palace maids held high position because they are bannerwomen, some of them are higher ranked than most consorts and therefore come from prestigious noble families, it will be very rare to see them being mistreated by any consorts because the 'maid' actually female-official, is probably more highborne than the consort and may marry into a prestigious family once their time is up. Ming court on the other hand, maids and consorts all come from commoners, maids do not have the backgrounds that maids of Qing dynasty have.
Palace intrigue are more possible during Ming dynasty and not Qing dynasty, because Qing dynasty have natural promotions, no emperor can just randomly promote a consort just because he feels like it, the consorts most of the time cannot raise her own son, as all sons are raised together.
been trying to get into more cdramas after watching legend of yunze so this was really informative
couple of mirrors I meant** 💀
wish I'd seen this video before watching apothecary diaries lmaoo
I’m glad you found it now 😭😭😭🤧
I have to think the actual women are in the next world watching these shows saying, "Can you believe what they did to me?" 😂
No, because they literally treated them like the scum of the earth
@@ellapastoral I meant how they were portrayed in these dramas - Yanxi Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love have most characters as opposites, good in one and evil in the other. I was just wondering what these women were actually like in their lives versus how they were portrayed in the book "Empresses in the Palace" and the shows.
Another black woman that loves cdramas 😭😭😭
Love them so much it’s rare to find another 😭😭😭
Thanks so much for this video. It’s nice knowing there’s another black woman out there who is familiar with c dramas.

I love me a good harem drama
Hy sis ❤❤❤
Hey 👋🏾
11:23 Well I fell all the chinese dramas I've watched and rewatched including expresses in the palace from
What me and My mum historically know vs what we about these dramas is low ranking consorts are
Bulied a lot gass leat and stupidly but basically these consorts are treated like nothing ya know just
Nothing like they are also like the best thing they can do is not a thing at all and this brutalise them
And the past makes them a monster by high ranking and that where the confidence comes in ya know
This helps remind them that they know how they knew how to get high ranking lady level and they are
Offin showed on screen to be well dressed in finery but not treated as well but i really love this talk about
Chinese historical facts about consorts and expresses cause I'm a historian and a samorish girl love everything
About being Eastern chinese Manchu haka 11:23

Of course 💅 follow me on tumblr
So we are entertained by ancient extreme patriarchy now? We. Are. Done. #shinythings #butterbiscuits
Companion is the lowest status you can have then above is attendant and so forth.
Chinese harem dramas are so good to watch but they infuriate me because everyone is cunning, too many miscarriages and poisoning of favoured women, the empress is evil but acts like a goody two shoes, women breaking backs and embarrassing themselves to get attention from the emperor and the emperor keeps betraying the only woman that actually loves him for him. It’s a lot 😭
