as an indian person i really wish there was more south asian representation considering englands long history of colonizing south asia and how there actually were south asians in england.
Agreed. In my opinion, the weird thing about Asian representation is that if there is a lot of South Asian representation, those who phenotypically look East Asian may not see that as “real” Asian representation for them. The same goes if most of the representation goes to those who physically look east or southeast Asian (which happens a lot). Then you have those who are middle eastern who may look white but people may not see that as collective Asian representation. Asians needs to be represented in general especially those who have monolids, have darker skin, ethnic noses, is Muslim/wears a hijab, etc.
Exactly!! And when South Asains are represented in British television they’re mostly required to represent Muslims too, not that it’s a problem but I’ve never seen a Hindu family being represented before and most of the time the actors/actresses aren’t Muslim in real life
@@bandaqueenlove9134 yep! but as a south asian i feel extremely excluded and underrepresented because there’s virtually no south asian rep in the media and the little that exists is stereotypical and negative
@@bandaqueenlove9134 Which Asian groups gets represented depends on which asian group is the majority in a nation. E.g. On british TV you will see more south asian represenation than say east asian, west or central asian etc because south asians (mainly indians) are the biggest asian minority in the UK. Go to Germany and the biggest Asian representation on TV should be Turkish. Go to the US and the people they represent as Asian tend to be east asian which usually doesnt have anything to do with them being the majority but because the US views Asian as a race and therefore excludes south, west, central and northen Asians.
when the queen basically said racism ended because the king fell in love with a black woman, it pissed me off because they just made the issue of slavery seem so trivial. like all it took was a white man's love to end an entire system of discrimination and severe inequality?? are you serious? they deadass made it into some Cinderella/white knight story and completely ignored the efforts of poc to end slavery/discrimination 😭
as a black person im personally happy that we dont have to have the show be all about racism because i feel like a lot of shows/ movies just define their characters by them going through "black struggles"
@@Kmkmkms hm I definitely see your point! but if that was their goal then I feel like it would have been better to just not include the overcoming discrimination "storyline" at all and write this world as one that didn't have race struggles in the first place.
Yeah they should've just left out all the racism stuff tbh. We need more shows where diverse characters are just living our lives & we don't have to constantly be shown struggling, enduring prejudice, poverty, etc. It is fine to just make a fantasy show or alt history where characters' skin tones are irrelevant
@@Kmkmkms I understand that but honestly they should’ve just left racism out of it all together if they weren’t going to really delve into it. They made it seem like they were doing a whole lot more than they were...
@@mayaskie1784 yeah i agree when i started the show i thought "oh so in this world racism was never a thing?" and i was kinda happy with just that i loved how we could finally see black people in a fantasy period piece where they are royal and elegant, i love how they weren't styled to look white and they were allowed to wear braids and natural hair styles but then they mentioned racism and i was a bit confused and i would have preferred for racism to have never existed in this universe
The way I didn't even question there not being any Asians... despite being Asian. It's just SO normal to not see anyone like me (especially being south Asian).
I was looking for this comment! I even searched the back of scenes at the extras but literally not a single Asian person 🙄 I hope they will respond to all of this in future sessions
Not saying you're wrong, but there are period pieces for Asians though, right? I always thought Bridgerton tried including Black representation outside of the "real life" period pieces that focus on trauma. Whereas other POC don't share that experience of no representation outside of trauma.
i'm talking ab Bridgerton in particular, im arab (Palestinian) and would love to see more representation of my ppl that doesn't include being terrorists lol so i def agree but just wanted to include another perspective on why the only poc in Bridgerton are black
@@sabrinanaser9327 Maybe for East Asians? I haven't seen any but as far as I know, there isn't a lot. If the intention of the show was to create Black representation that doesn't focus on trauma, then it makes sense that there weren't any Asians. As a South Asian we have almost no positive representation in mainstream media and I'm not sure if there are period pieces involving South Asians at all. I'm Indian and I can't think of a single show where there are Indian characters who are likable and complex, rather than the usual unattractive nerd. However, I totally get why we might not see Asians in Bridgerton specifically.
The way Bridgerton just mixed up different regional cultures in India as 'Indian'. Them being from Bombay, speaking Marathi, but also using 'appa' (a South Indian word) with didi (Hindi) and Bon (bengali). And as a Bengali living in North India all my life i recognise that isn't accurate. They take random bits of aesthetically pleasing representation and just amalgamate it into 'indian girl'.
Yeah… I dunno. I see it differently? Like, when I watched Black Panther (I’m black) I noticed that they have shit from all over the continent mixed in. On the one hand, sure it’s not specific. But in the other, I genuinely wonder if idiosyncratic specificity actually can be more representative than one single specific type of person? For example, on the continent on Africa there are of course thousands of cultures and languages and traditions and so no one movie could ever represent them all with any depth. So if you can’t do that (if there just isn’t the time or space to do it), is pulling out specifics from different parts of the area you’re trying to represent potentially a better way to allow people to see themselves in a set of characters then getting one very specific region and culture exactly right? I’m not 100% convinced that that’s the case or anything, but I do think it’s something to think about. Like, it seems like the casting decision for this season was made in direct response to the colourism critique given that the Indian girl in question is one of the darker skinned Indian woman anywhere on tv and is definitely the darkest skin woman (or second maybe) of the whole series. So it feels like they were trying to represent as many people as they could with these 3 characters? But I don’t know - maybe specificity would be better. On the other hand, we have a fictional England where presumably slavery doesn’t exist on either side of pond, and colonialism hasn’t somehow abolished the mutual societal respect of hierarchy and ranking between high English and high Indian society so it feels weird on its face too, I guess to me, to hypothesize too much about a fantastical romantic world that simply could have never existed because all modern distinctions are based on history that isn’t shared with the history of the show. I dunno. Im probably overthinking this but you gave me a really interesting set of thoughts to tease out so thank you for that!
Actually, think it's great to learn terms of affection or greeting from different parts of India. Why limit it to one region? If the goal of the show is to expose people to different aspects of Indian culture, then including terms from different regions is wonderful. These are likely terms many would never have known had they not chosen to include them. It's not that it isn't accurate. They never specified a region of India. I see it as inclusive rather than an amalgamation.
I'm sorry this is just like that Pakistani dude in squid game with a Bengali name. It's dehumanizing. Then again it's a kdrama. And kdrama industry is way worse then Hollywood. I say it even tho I love it. But you know what sadly it's still progress and I hope characters in future would be better.
@@juliakimaro959 I came here b/c I got an alert that someone made a comment, but I was super confused b/c what does "east African ancestry" have anything to do w/my comment? But after reading through everything, I'm even more confused as to how your ancestry has anything to do with your comment???
With kids' shows like Little Bill, That's So Raven, and the Proud Family were some, but I'm not sure there are as many shows now that embrace different shades and put POC characters at the forefront. It might just be because I don't watch much TV anymore, though, but it's definitely something I noticed.

I thought the same. Lately when I saw cute girls my brain was just like "it's not normal, it's bad" and I felt so bad for thinking that like being homophobic when it comes to myself but maybe it's society and not me
All of Africa has a rich culture and history. But academic study is oversaturated in areas like Europe, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Also, you can’t exactly rely on the media for non-selective representation.
Yesssss we Ethiopians have a beautiful culture and a royal family that existed for 1000s of years. Am I the only one who doesn't care about being represented in a setting that people who look like me were never truly a part of? Honestly, including black people as nobility in 1800s England gives the false impression that black people were actually seen as equals in that society. What is really needed is a show that depicts African life in the 1800s or earlier and showcases our rich heritage.
Not that people shouldn't have work but they can stop casting girls who look close to white as the daughter of dark skinned black parents so much. At least balance it out. Now the son is often dark skinned.
The Good Place does some wonderful color-conscious casting. They casted whoever was best for the role and then made the role around the character, with their own racially and culturally significant and I truly love that and think it should be done more often.
Now that you mention it, they did do a fantastic job with the main cast on that show. I didn’t even realize that when I was watching it because it felt natural like they were characters who were just living their lives (or after-lives rather, lol). It didn’t feel too forced or too relaxed.
The good place did great! Because obviously in 'the good place' races and nations would all be together because its not earth anymore and soul mates could be people from different countries I. E. Ellenor from America and chidi from Australia
@@AN-cr9cy wait i agree so much with the not realizing the diversity, like i wasn’t like i didn’t realize the races of each character, but the show did not seem like it only casted the characters for “diversity points”
In no way trying to redeem Simon's father, but I'm really interested in they brush over the fact he was a generation that would have experienced slavery and then aristocracy and was worried about being stripped of his title by a mad king if he didn't have a perfect heir. Not that it makes him sympathetic, but there's motivation there.
In 1813 the British slave trade was continuing in the Caribbean and didn't stop until the mid-to-late 1840s. That's why I couldn't suspend my disbelief to get into this show. Every family in Bridgerton would've been making income from chattel slavery, so this weird utopia where there are Black people in the middle and upper classes and Black servants aren't enslaved people, didn't sit right with me. I found it all so unsettling. I'm also at saturation point with Buffy Syndrome shows about idealised white women who are fawned over by all and sundry.
Yeah I think they really shot themselves in the foot by opening up that “alternate history” explanation of ‘yeah racism did exist but racism ended once Obama became pres- I mean, Charlotte became Queen’ explanation in a one sentence throw away line. If they just went colourblind casting no one would question it, but introducing that bit of worldbuilding and not following through just leaves them to so many questions
also i kind of didn’t like what they did to penelope’s character. they always do this to fat girls, they make them this sort of revenge seeking underdog that becomes the bad guy bc no one ever pays them attention and in the case of girls they make them compete with one another for the affection some guy. it’s such an over-used trope and i was hoping they wouldn’t repeat it but they did
YESSS! They literally made her the fat best friend 😩. Also, didn't like the way she was lady whistledown. Now looking back it makes sense but it takes the likeability of her character away. Since she exposed Marina and lied to Elosies face :(
@@josss_ie8083 she also doesn’t do that in the books! The fact she is Lady Whistledown really elevates her character rather than takes away from it, as Marina isn’t involved there in the books
The reason why they didnt have any darskinned black people on the show as main characters is because eventhough they were trying to be "woke" they still wanted to play it safe. So they wanted "black" british royals to impress black people but they also didnt want to loose the "realism" aka offend white people who are big fans of british times or big fans of the book so they went with what would be more likely which is mixed race royals and mixed race main characters. When it comes to Asians not being as represented they didnt have to worry about that because usually asians dont complain as much about the lack of representation as other ethnic groups since its usually mostly non asians complaining for asians if that make sense or non asians encouraging asians to feel offended. That is partly the reason why a lot of shows get away with not representing asians enough or only representing a certain type of asian community.
I am from a Latin American country, you would not believe the quantity of people offended in the spanish trailer of Netflix ,saying it was not realistic to even include people who are not white as anything but servants. So yes, people who belong to countries that were once a colony and probably have all kinds of race heritage were still offended because they didn't want anything but a white cast in a fictional England,so even tho some countries felt it wasn't enough ,others felt that "woke" inclusion was too much.

Daphne literally tries to change Simon and ultimately sexually assaults him to get what she wants...a child. Yes, rape can happen in a marriage as well. I wonder how people would react if the roles were reversed.
I get what you are saying, but the roles are almost ALWAYS reversed. Women being raped is used as a plot point in alot of stories. GoT for example. Women's suffering is almost always used as a motivating plot point.

@@pokefan5ever i did, and i enjoyed it too :) but one season of one show isn't going to equate to the other abundance of representation white women get. also, my original comment was centred more around darkskinned black women.
I (kinda) liked the world they build in Bridgerton because like you said, it felt like colorblind casting. And i liked how they didn't really talk about the characters' race at all because its kinda fun to watch something that has nothing to do with race at all sometimes, but then they DID start talking about it in the show and it made absolutely NO SENSE and it threw me off lol. That bullshit story about ‘the white king who fell in love with one of us and ended racism’ or whatever was fucking awful, they should have just not adressed it at all and that wouldve been better
yeah i love that the black characters were not defined by their struggles from being black i was like wtf when they explained it but i overall liked that black people were treated so casually and had their own individual plots
Hundred percent agree. As if no king has never fallen in love with a black woman before? Didn’t realise it was so easy to erase heavily entrenched blatant and systematic racism. It was so cheap. But I think also if they are going to include people of different races in a colourblind way then why wouldn’t you add all kinds of people?
This is about the ONLY comment on this entire thread that I truly agree with! - lol - Yes, yes, & yes! - They should have just let the world be the world. It was stupid and took me out of the show's reality for a moment. Bleck!
yup. there's a film adaptation of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield starring Dev Patel, and there they did colourblind casting with absolutely zero explanation whatsoever. at one point there's a character played by a Black woman whose father is played by an Asian man, and it's just treated as it is. there doesn't always have to be explanations for these things, particularly if the story is about something else entirely. just don't whitewash characters that are already established as bipoc (bc representation of bipoc played by bipoc still has ways to go) and you're good to go!

I'm an Indian woman and this practice of colorism runs sooooooo deep in Bollywood that a bunch of highest paid actresses right now in Bollywood are NOT EVEN Indian. they are mixed or have distant south Asian ancestry, and all of them are light skinned to the point where some of them look whiter than my whitest friends. For example Jacqueline Fernandez, Sunny Leone, Katrina Kaif. There are literally no famous dark-skinned actresses in Bollywood, maaybe you can count Deepika but she's heavily made up in films to look basically white.
I would consider Pryianka to be dark skinned.. but just having her as a sole representative, considering how diverse India is in terms colour is just not enough! I get what you mean. Hopefully it changes in times to come!
As someone who watches not a lot of bollywood at all but still acquainted with it, who the fuck are Jacqueline Fernandez, and Sunny Leone.... LOL But you got a point there.
@@lunazen8661 I wouldn’t count Priyanka as a representative. She was much darker skin before and then when Hollywood started calling she only associated herself with white ppl. You're literally speaking my mind. I was speaking with my friends today about how Hollywood knows what blackness looks like in men but when it comes to women they start acting stupid. Take for instance all the Black marvel male superheroes, they are all played by unambiguous dark skin BLACK men in their live actions but for storm(who is a darkskin black woman), only BIRACIAL or ambiguous women have played her.
Very true. I'm a big X-men fan and we definitely got a whitewashed storm. Fun fact is that Angela Bassett was originally intended for the role. I forget why she didn't do it but yeah it's very true. Going forward I am hopeful Hollywood will change it. The new Storm should definitely be a dark skinned woman. Anna Diop would be a good choice
I dont exactly agree with this at least not presently. Black panther did a lot for not only highlighting dark skin black women as love interests but also fleshed out, complex and strong characters with Shuri, Nakia and Okoye becoming fan favorites because of the film, we have definitely made progress. Now that is just one movie so we will have to see how this all pans out moving forward.
I recently saw an even more whitewashed version of Storm in a comic (she literally looked like a white woman, she was unrecognizable) I believe there was a video done about it but in older comics she was dark skinned. Her hair and features were still Eurocentric though.
@@dren5810 Yeah true black panther is a good recent example. Hopefully Marvel keep it up. I know black panther had black writers and creators who were aware of the issue, whoever is making the new X men may not be as aware of issues like this but hopefully as Storm is supposed to be half Kenyan and half Black American they won't cast a light skin mixed looking actress to do the role
Marvel didn't make the x-men movies so this isn't right example to infer. Fox made those movies. Marvel hadn't bought fox yet. But I know the phenomenon you're talking about.
I can already feel the “yall can never be happy” nonsense but honestly i am so happy people are speaking up and not accepting bare minimum thoughtlessness
I agree. I miss 90s shows like Cosby, Fresh Prince, Living Single, Mr. Cooper, etc. that had great black casts. & tbh I liked Friends & many shows with white casts. It's fine if it fits the show or is some white folks history like Vikings or British royalty. But nowadays they pander to us & try to put every ethnicity in every show so we don't get to shine in big roles or our own shows. Plus, every time non-whites are on screen it's for "struggle love" or poverty or discrimination. Obv these are real issues, but it's like we're being treated as a "social issue" rather than as human beings. It's like new shows only put folks like me on screen to show struggling, but in the 90s shows we had wealthy black families being happy. It's like we're going backwards now😕
I really think the "yall can never be happy" crowd is also kinda looking at it from the wrong perspective. Like, it's not necessarily about trashing a show. It's about critique and there's no such thing as a perfect show and good showrunners should be open for that critique and be able to take it in. Like with Bridgerton. They tried, some things were alright, some things were good, some things were a bit uninventive and some things were outright problematic. They now have the opportunity to interact with their audience and work with what came back. That's a good thing. That allows for progress.
Honestly this is the most diverse show I’ve ever seen. You can’t expect perfection especially when no other show is. I’m sorry but y’all see them making an effort and still complaining about shit.
but it’s so simple, just make a damn BLACK main character and give a (at least) decent story line.. like that’s literally all we’re asking for and they can’t even do that. everyone is just trying to tiptoe around what we want when it’s so simple
I definitely missed any hint that Simon's dad was using the "twice as hard to get half as far" mentality, so to me it just came across as, "Wow, this dad is a jerk just because his son has a stammer. Poor Simon." Also, thank you for bringing up the consent issues! If it had been the opposite scenario where Simon wanted kids and Daphne didn't and he was forcing himself on her, I think it would have been seen more clearly for what it was. We still have work to do as a society with recognizing that men can be victims and women can be perpetrators, though I think it's getting better. 💜
Being a white, seventeen year old girl, I actually thought that bridgerton did well in including POC. This video really made me realise that lighter skinned/biracial people are used for prominent characters, instead of darker skinned actors. Now I'm just bothered by it. Thank you for making this video.
I'm a white lady, a bit older than you, and your comment is perfect in a way. It shows how we've backslid so far from where TV shows used to be, from when casts that featured black people in lead roles, and not just lighter black people, but all shades, was actually normal, to a point where people who could almost pass for white being set dressing is considered inclusive. As a sci-fi nerd, a couple examples that stick out to me are how NO ONE questioned the inclusion of non-white characters in prominent roles in shows like Battlestar Galactica, and think about the cast favorites of Star Trek. Non-white people, including Asian, got to exist and *do actual stuff.*. Now, toss in a few lighter black people at basically furniture, and that's inclusive.... We can do better than this, and i know we can because media HAS done better, and entertainment and media in general were so much better and wittier and insightful for it.
Yup so this video achieved its goal and next time you’ll even be able to point this out or even look for actual diversity in another show or movie, and music videos etc you watch with friends or family who might have thought is is what diversity is. Really cool you were open to learning.
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria I agree. I realize there were more TV shows centered around black main characters in the 90s and early 2000s, and that as in, fully black actors. We don't see it as a "push for diversity," when diverse character casts have fully fleshed out personalities, and vital roles to the plot.
Not just sitcoms but like 1990-2005 animations were going hard on representation in a way that didnt feel too promotional. like lilo and stitch and stuff.

But this girl was only focused on Asians while you’re focused on both and she can’t even be grateful. The audacity.
As an Asian, it's so annoying how Asians are either the smart, toxic, or "quirky" friend. This is why I gravitate to Kdramas and movies (I'm Korean). It's refreshing to see beautiful Asians being appreciated for their acting in significant roles, but even then I always see a few scathing comments. Also please. Can we see some South Asian representation?
I was about to ask that, WITH ALL RESPECT , but Asians have a whole market of media on their own. How much representation they need in western media? I know that marketing is also tending towards white features in Asia as well, which is a problem, but that's a different (or not?) topic.
@@esikazemese Hi! I totally understand where you're coming from, and I'll be glad to answer. You see, many Asian countries are monoethnic. Even Korea, despite having a surge in foreigners, is still made up of almost only Koreans. Of course, if this changes, then Korean media will have to show more diversity. But of now, Asian marketing is targeted towards Asian features because that is literally the vast majority of the people living there. This is why cultural appropriation and other issues can be different in Asian countries. However, in the case of western countries, we know that there is a large diverse population of all races. Western media should reflect this. I'm Korean-American, and even though I see myself in Kdramas, I want to see myself in Hollywood movies, because that is a reflection of myself as well. I think that Asians, and honestly all races should be getting equal representation in western media, because there are millions of these people living in western society. My parents don't care that they aren't represented in blockbuster movies, but I do, because I was born and raised in America. Just because I have the opportunity to see myself in the Asian market doesn't mean that Asians shouldn't be getting representation in western media. At most, it becomes an excuse to brush off racism in the industry, as, "oh you have your own media, why don't you just go there?" Hope this answers your question :)
Your answer was on point ... as a Hispanic...I have experienced racism in my ow country for having Native American roots and as well from white Europeans and white North Americans for being brown..for me it’s very difficult try to teach someone why representation matters because I have flashbacks of experiencing racism so I always ending up arguing and insulting everyone. Reading your answer you taught me a lesson, thank you !!!
@@mel_zzz_ Awww it sounds like you went through a lot, and I'm so sorry for these experiences. I totally get you, because I have also experienced racism as an Asian, especially after COVID. It can be hard to remain calm while teaching someone something that is traumatic to you, but try to remember that getting angry won't fix anything! It takes time for these things to change, and some people have never had the chance to even learn about these issues. Hope you're doing good!! (•◡•) /
I had this exact same experience watching Crazy Rich Asians. Rich/Protagonists = pale with english accent. Antagonists = darker complexions and english with a heavy accent
Let's not forget that they completely ignored certain ethnic groups. I know the film is based on a book but the movie seemed to portray singapore as plainly "asians=chinese". When in reality, Singapore is a MELTING pot with all kinds of asians. If anything, (as a south asian) it felt like the movie perpetuated the stereotype that asians only mean east asians.
@@karmeeleon I would talk about how all asians have alot of colorism ingrained in their societies and how the "developed" lighter asian countries look down upon SEA and especially south asian(desi) folk based on the image the white man has crafted for us but y'all ain't ready for that conversation.

ItzKeisha and Kennie JD are both really awesome too. Kennie’s one of my favorite UA-camrs. She does a lot of commentary videos but also talks about current events as they arise. Keisha (though I haven’t seen some of her most recent videos) talks a lot about news on social media and issues like racism, homophobia&biphobia respectively, and how problematic certain creators are. Highly recommend both of them though
When she said that, "I hoped to see at least one Asian character..." my heart broke. Coz this means the bar is so low, that one Asian character would be sort of satisfactory. And that is messed up.

True! Hollywood is still forgetting Asian people can be dark skinned too, and that Indian people are Asian, and the fact that England colonized India and there were no Indian people in this show is another X
For real, I spent some time in southern India, and was shocked by how dark the people were. The majority of them were darker than most people I know who identify as Black in the united states (including myself). I'm like, where is the representation for these folks? You never see them on TV. There or here. This could have been a perfect opportunity.

The queer-baiting was in the books, too. But there's a whole lot of other changes--and I'm still disappointed that Daphne wasn't plus-sized, because she was at least hinted that way in the novels.
Ooh Imagine that would've been cool. But it's ok ig. Most of the women in the show are corseted very slim women. And it felt like that was like pressure for them to be that way. That was kinda sad. Only Penelope and her friends are these outcasts. Tbh I really like how they dress Penelope. It's not to hide her body but to flatter it. She looks very beautiful.
@Sakura Nova Ryan actually regency period fashion didnt even have corsets, they had stays which were less restricting. having a slim figure was less of a requirement bc the dresses had little structure anyway so whats the point of having tiny waist if no one sees it yknow?
I'm Colombian. My representations only ever includes drugs, terrorism, maaayyybeee a maid at times. I usually just let myself feel represented through black girls, Mexican girls, and even asian girls at times. :/ I never get any real representation. I let my myself feel proud when I see a black girl doing her thing. If I don't do this then idk ya know it feels shitty haha... BUTTT, i do understand how important it all is and I'm glad it is being talked about so much.
Right!!! It bothers me as a Colombian that whenever I hear “diversity,” I assume I’m not included. Which on the one hand, I get, it’s one country. But the fact that “diversity” barely includes any latinx people at best but seems never to go south of Mexico (unless you are akin Manuel Miranda or JLo) has become more and more problematic
I saw a comment on Twitter that I think is very apt; Roughly- -Why do dark skin men make fun of light skin men, when they are always in a hurry to create them?
My main problem was closer to the end of the show. The toxic relationship the duke had with his dad was swept quite swiftly and insensitively under the rug. And I’m saying that incredibly nicely. Suddenly, the couple has a baby and he’s apparently over what his dad did to him?? That’s... not how toxic relationships work. Healing from them takes so much longer than that. OH man, I was UPSET at the ending.
@@barbiechyqa9192 I’m hoping that too but I have a gut feeling they won’t with how quickly the issue was resolved. They really made the duke look insensitive just because the main chick wanted a child (along with the fact that it’s EXPECTED for them to have one) and invalidated his trauma. I know someone who has a father whom they’ve disowned and watching that was hard tbh
I would really love to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in media. There are hardly any, even in media that is actually made in Australia, and when they do appear they are often the "noble savage" or "magical native" stereotype. I've been binge-watching Malcolm in the Middle as we're currently in lockdown in Sydney, and I thought it was so cool to see a major character who was Native Alaskan. There are so many races and ethnic groups that just never seem to appear in mainstream media.
And if they are, they only include Indians and not other south Asians. Like hello... other ones exist. I’ve seen Indians in TV but they’re always a caricature of an Indian person (like exaggerated accent, nerdy, etc.), which isn’t fair.
@Kiss the color of a constellation they don't even completely feature Indians - it's the colonial hangover, they've started whitewashing their gods and goddesses. But yeah, it's not the complete south Asia, it is however the most influential film industry in the region, if they changed themselves and the self loathing ended then it'd probably do a lot for representation elsewhere
honestly the scene between daphne and simon when she forces him to try to have a child with her bothered me so much. it’s literal sexual assault and rape and they tried to make daphne the victim afterwards and never talked about how simon was feeling

See, I thought the whole “multiracial utopia” was like, a fantasy take, and that the show was fantasy-realism; and then they have a line about “the queen married the king and that’s why racism is over” and I lost my shit. like... what?? so you’re telling me that one black queen of England is all it took to not only end racism, but within a single generation completely redistribute wealth power??? (so basically, yeah, exactly what you said)
Agreed, it's like it just shatters that suspension of disbelief that they ask you to cultivate for however many episodes, and then they're like "sike!"
Your comment makes ZERO sense. You just said yourself this show was a fantasy take - so fantasy realism where Black, Gay and Asian people are part of Victorian England makes sense, but racism going away after one generation IN A FANTASY SETTING is somehow offensive. What does that even mean??? Either it's fantasy and you have to allow for fantasy elements or it should be ''factual'' in which case the cast should have been all white.
@@tosheatower The showrunners said they wanted the show to speak on race, class, and gender of today. As a Latina, I agree 100%! I wish I could see myself in shows like this. Instead we get hypersexualized and portrayed as “spicy” and with an attitude. Also I don’t understand the x in “latinx”... did i miss something? In Spanish Latino is the default gender neutral version.
Latinx was originally suppose to be only for non binary people which is like less than 1% of the population but nowadays idk wtf EVERYONE is calling all latinos, latinx because I know quite a few very out and proud latinos that's hate being called latinx. At the end of the day if it's a personal choice of you want to call only non binary people latinx and every one else latino that's your right. It was joked that "latinx" was created by white people (I wouldn't be surprised). LatinOs is for all Latin people men or women, latinx is was suppose to be for just the non binary. I dont say latinx because I personally hate that word. It's as aggravating as afrx (afro) or womyn/womxn (women) 🤢.
apparently trans spanish speaking and indigenous in particular people have tried to tell people to use latine instead of latinx since its just a weird hard pronunciation. which would be more gender neutral than latino as a blanket term since o is masculine in many circumstances, and it might make trans latine people uncomfortable when included and implicitly gendered that way.
It's white people trying to force their "inclusive" terms onto other races without giving a shit about that race and their hisotry, basically (they do that a lot). It's their pat on the back, yay, we did it! If you will.
@@garfieldfatherofdread3043 then what about the the latinos that dont want to be referred to that at all? Just use latinx or e or whatever only for the lgbt community and let the rest of be referred to as Latinos 😂 this was an issue for only non binary in the beginning.
@@Spicy_Spores I am Brazilian, born and raised, and I honestly never saw a problem with the term Latinx bc I thought it was an English way to be inclusive. When I speak Portuguese I still refer to everyone as Latinos, I never thought about it as anyone trying to change our language because they did it in their language. Much like the way they changed the word Brasil to Brazil. But Brazil might be different from other places tho because we take in English words all the time and make it our own. Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t care but that’s just my take on it.
i thought it was just me with the queer-baiting. i really thought that Eloise and Benedict would have the gay sibling bond. but alas, they didn’t bc Benedict turned out to not be gay and Eloise wasn’t in a relationship with her best friend *sigh*

Conscious Casting is something my favorite Drama Professor taught us when she picked scenes for us to learn. It took her from the time she met us, to about halfway or more through the quarter to cast us into our scenes, because she wanted to get to know us and our struggles and passions before deciding roles for us. She put emphasis on the importance of seeing the actor and letting the actor connect to their character's struggle. It wasn't just skin color she took into consideration, she also looked at sexuality and anxieties(from what students shared willingly- just to be clear), and it lead to some very heartfelt and passionate finals. It was generally a really good experience, and I'd say, a lot of that was thanks to our Professor just- acknowledging parts of us while casting and wanting something for us to grow from.
Yes, he consented to having sex with her but consenting to sex and consenting to sex without birth control are definitely not the same thing. Obviously, today we know that pulling out is not an effective method for birth control but we have to consider the context of the show here. Simon made his boundaries clear several times. I agree, he should have explained his reasons for not having children before entering the relationship but it's ultimately his choice if/when/how to tell her and Daphne crossed these boundaries both in the sex scene and when she read his letters. What bothered me most was the dialog that followed the sex scene because Daphne is still portrayed as the innocent, likeable character. It could have been an interesting turning point in which the flaws of her character are revealed...
Another thing that these shows refuse to do is cast an unambiguous black couple. The man can be dark skinned, but best believe the woman will be lighter than a brown paper bag; or definitely biracial. Leave it to the media you would think dark skin women, and black couples don't exist. I still watch Living Single...the cast was fire! Your self promotion at the end😂🤣. You got pipes!🤎
As a Native woman, I can relate to that feeling of never being able to see someone that looks like you in shows or movies unless they come with extreme stereotypes. Film likes to keep Native people back in the 1800s and doesn't feel the need to put us in any other role, or worst case scenario they cast a white person to play Native roles instead of Native actors (ex: Johnny Depp in Lone Ranger and Taylor Lautner in Twilight). We make up less than 1% of America, but we are still here
I'm genuinely ignorant but, how much of the population are actors? I tried Googling actors because I'm worried about how Netflix is going to cast the Water Tribes in their Avatar: The Last Airbender adaption, I didn't get much results but I'd like to see more representation. I don't want them to be whitewashed, I hope there are aspiring Native actors that are ready to audition. It would be an amazing opportunity for the Native community if Netflix took the initiative to cast them properly as Indigenous people.
Omg. I didnt realise that Taylor Lautner wasn't native American. I'm African. The only time I saw Native American people is on Tik Tok ( I know it's not the best source.) Then I started looking for youtube videos on native Americans and the first things I find is some racist BS with a young white guy spitting on an older Native American man during their peaceful protests.
@@actuallyterry i love that people are sharing our culture on TikTok and it gives other people a chance to learn about us and our cultures. And a lot of people thought Taylor Lautner was native but he’s actually full white lol
I'm super late to the Bridgerton party having watched S1 oh recently, but I gotta say I was extremely and deeply upset by the romance between Daphne and Simon. It was so promising at first since I'm a sucker for fake dating and they had amazing chemistry, but That scene happened and it was on _Simon_ to be forgiven and not Daphne. She even gets what she wants in the end, and he has his desires minimized by her and Anthony. Watching him be beaten up hurt more than anything else. But Daphne is tier for least favorite character with Penelope for how she so willingly ruined Marina's life because Marina was pursuing a boy she liked and saw _no_ repercussions for it. I guess if you're a white woman in this show you're instantly forgiven for violating and hurting black main characters. Its upsetting and I'm only interested in S2 because of some friends - if it weren't already out, I doubt I'd pay this show anymore mind. (Favorite heart 💙)
Wait, so you're mad at Daphne for borderline raping Simon and not facing any consequences for it, but you simply see Marina trying to baby trap Colin as simply, "pursuing a boy [Penelope] liked?" Nope. What both Daphne and Marina did were shitty and they deserve to be called out for it. At least with Daphne, her ignorance a naivety towards sex probably did not enable to understand the etiquette of sexual consent. But Marina knew full well what she was doing. Just because she's black doesn't mean you have to defend her all the time.
Honestly I felt bad for marina. What a toxic environment and life. She's likable in other places. But what she did was wrong. She was manipulating and betraying a person. And Penelope is honestly a great character on paper. Her story is interesting. But she's prolly down more toxic thing so can count in one hand. So yeah there's no way to like a character I guess. They've all done something horrible. And not in like human flaws way. More like evil. Which is for the drama.
@@rebekahsegun8319 hm sure u can make that argument. But imo people defending her has more to do with how shitty her situation is. Daphne may not have any sex education but she has backup. This is why we need shows based on books written by and about people of color. Instead of asking for a seat at the table, we need to bring the table and the damn chairs. Period.
@@Kmkmkms Shonda Rhimes is not a dark skinned black women. The two shows you just mentioned by her also seem to have similarities to this one in how they handle diversity. I might be wrong though.
The thing is, I think romance is an amazing genre to explore issues of race, sexuality, gender, social issues etc. in because it’s about two people with probably differing life experiences and different worldviews and differing opinions coming together and learning about each other and deciding they want to build a life together. A huge part of romance is two people getting to know each other, which leaves a huge space for those people to be discussing social issues and how they see the world as they are trying to decide if this other person is compatible to building a life with them. And so to hop around deep social issues in favor of just discussing favorite color or favorite bands or favorite movies between two romantic leads, I think it’s really shallow and ignores a lot of conversations that people in actual relationships often have.
Probably also worth mentioning that when the white woman lead r*pes the duke, a black man, she suffers absolutely no scripted redemption arc, punishment etc. and is still portrayed as the tragic heroine just "struggling to get by in a misogynistic world uwu" It was disturbing to watch and even more disturbing to watch how daphne got the baby and dream life out of it. Like yeah they argued, and yes all of the misogyny is bad, but I feel like they included some fresh issues they could have made a thing out of (woman-on-man sexual abuse), but instead fell back on "check out how oppressed this white woman is lmao". (obviously regency women were oppressed but this is very clearly historical fantasy and they are very clearly cherry picking the struggles to explore. It's interesting that they went with the oppressed white woman arc rather than the racial divide that they openly mentioned and then forgot all about...) You see it a little with Marina as well, rather than her problem (the pregnancy) being treated properly by the script, it's just sort of overall viewed as "her fault" and swept under the rug. The evil mother figure acted as a scapegoat to divert your attention from the societal issue, and I would have loved if they went on to have Marina thriving as a single mother in an idyllic country setting, breaking free of that society or something rather than marrying her off. They really did do her arc dirty. Imho if you're gonna pretend that your historical soft porn show speaks about important issues then at least try to deliver...
You're absolutely right about everything. They definitely focused on "women empowerment" and sexism, and unfortunately only with the white women. It's shameful that they tried to pretend they were going to address racial issues when in reality, intentionally or not, created them within the show.
I couldn't finish the show after the part at the duel where Daphne was like "we're getting married." Because there was only one way that story could go. I know she was like " its time for me to take control of my future" but not at the expense of someone else's agency. I didn't know anything about the show or what they said they wanted to achieve, but now that i know a bit I'm fairly furious. They did their own self-professed dream dirty. It would have made more sense to be colorblind and sexblind casted. At least then the audience could wrestle with their own ideas of race and gender...
I agree. I was really liking the show up until that scene and it pissed me off. I was even more appalled when my stepmom thought it was justified (which I think was the intention). Was it wrong for him to mislead her? Yes, especially since he KNEW how naive she was when it came to sex and how it worked (for those who don’t know, she didn’t even know what masturbating was so...). The proper thing would’ve been for her to confront him openly and not when they’re having sex. Forcing him to do something he has so very clearly NOT wanted to do was so, SO much worse than him letting her believe a lie (that wasn’t even all that harmful - she thought he was infertile and COULDN’T give her children, irl, he just didn’t want to to spite his father who was neglectful, it’s a whole thing.) But this has always bothered me in period pieces, how they just kinda throw in POC and queer people almost like they’re trying to meet a diversity quota. They act like those things didn’t have any impact and it wasn’t a big deal, when irl, those were INCREDIBLY scandalous during the time period. It’s just kinda... off when I see shows like Bridgeton act like “oh, this person is gay, and that’s a black man, and, yes, it’s set in the 1800’s, but no one cares! It’s fine! See how are inclusive we are?” Somethings just always kind of been off about it. Like it never seemed real.
*fake historical soft porn. You're absolutely right- there was so much racial divide in the era but they just skipped that and glossed it over with fantastical inter race weddings - not to mention the rape of the Duke. And also in the book, he( and he's white in the book) threatens to rape her- that is also cut

And the fact that we only see complex and lovable darker women in shows made by Issa Rae or Micaela Cole is just testament to how we are often the only ones holding space for our experiences.
This show was created by Shonda Rhimes a dark skinned woman as well. I generally don't have an issue with her as she has positively portrayed dark skinned and unambiguous Black women in her past shows. But something about this just show rubs me the wrong way. Almost like she tried to check off too many "diversity" boxes without making her Whjte audience totally uncomfortable.

Middle Eastern characters are few and far between, and are often played by white or racially ambiguous actors. Like, we couldn’t even have JASMINE 😭. On that note, Hollywood needs to learn that brown people are not interchangeable.
I don’t care what anyone says, naomi scott playing jasmine was fucking ridiculous. She’s literally half indian half english, not even full middle eastern. And the fact that they chose a half white actress makes it even worse
the fact that they hired an Indian person as if Indians are middle eastern ?? like give us the right representation or dont. Indians are South Asian and the fact that they bring Indian actors to play middle eastern characters just doesn't sit right with me for example abed from community is supposed to be Palestinian but the actor that plays him is Indian 🙄 Americans and their ignorance will never surprise me 😍👍

Can we just get a show about Indigenous people that Aren't treated as "exotic hot girls/guys" or as mystic, evil, or magical characters. As someone who is part Indigenous, it would be nice to see them not be made as either these basic hot characters or revered. I just want a character who's out there living their life. Or just see more of them in lead roles. Edit: thank you so much to all the wonderful people offering suggestions!!!! I truly appreciate it!!!!!
Probably not your speed, but the boss character in FBI Most Wanted was married to a Mohawk woman and his daughter is a frequent character which draws in a lot of interesting family and identity moments. Plus, the dead wife's brother is another of the FBI agents on the show, though he has been absent during the current season because of (we assume) scheduling conflicts for the Canadian actor who portrays him. Personally, I find it somewhat frustrating at times but I'm one of those part-Indian people who don't actually believe the whole "They stole the land!" narrative is much of a valid complaint. But it is a great example of American Indian people being allowed to just exist as realistic characters.
@@MrsRen yeah. Like it sucks....but honestly every race and tribe/clan has invaded and "conquered" other clans/tribes/etc for all of history. It's what we did before we knew better, and even when we did. But I get that it still angers people and they're free to feel that way, even if I don't necessarily agree with it 100%. But I might just have to check that out!!!! Apparently there's a movie about a Wendigo called Antlers??? And the guy who played Billy Black is supposed to be in it. So I'm intrigued to see what they do with his character. You know???

Same 😔 I had never considered the issue of a buff dark skinned guy with a petite white girl - but yeah, I bet they considered that would be too triggering for some white folks 🤷🏻♀️ I can see how Bridgerton would be infuriating to any non-white person. The producers were trying to be “woke” but still had to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, so ended up not really delivering.... (I guess they tried? Idk)
Theres nothing wrong with you. People are just overreacting in the internet as usually. This youtubers make money problematizing shit dont forget that. I mean theres people in this comment section mad because the black girl in the show is too light skinned. Wtf is this bs? Let the girl be ffs.
@@analopes312 The original comment was a positive realization about being more aware of subliminal messages in the pop culture we so regularly consume. Of course nothing is "wrong" with her and no one is claiming a white viewer who doesn't make the points Khadija made is racist, ignorant, mean, or any other such word. It's this simple: when any type of content--literature, films, TV, etc.--is made specifically about your community and background, you are going to have thoughts and opinions you'll want to share. Bridgerton has openly been a show that touches on "race" and especially representation of African Americans. Khadija isn't problematizing the show. Obviously, you didn't watch the entire video and only came to the comment section to rage. Constructive criticism and a respectfully crafted opinion is not problematic. It's a shame that negativity is all you took away from this well-structured, intriguing perspective on a unique, novel show.
In any moment Bridgerton attempts to touche deeply on race issues. Its all baite. The point of the show is hot people making out. If you were excepting something deep coming from a netflix show you came to the wrong place. And african americans need to stop pretending they are the only black people on the planet its fucking exausting. They want a overweight typical black american girl in every role.
thank you for mentioning the lack of Asian representation and putting in that clip with the Asian woman speaking about her experience. I mentioned that in a class and people really shut me down and told me to just "get over it" or "it's so diverse". Regency Era novels have such a special place in my heart and it was a sting for me.
If the show was really serious about the fantasy element, then they should have included an Asian character. For the actual time period, their weren’t many Asians in Regency England.
Sad to hear that your classmates shut you down like that. Your views are 100% valid and you were right to bring up how overlooked and under represented Asians are in western media. I hope we see improvements in the next decade on that front.

The only "eligible" (i.e. YOUNG, beautiful, and worthy of having speaking lines) woman of color is MIXED (I won't even talk about the potential colorism there). All the (white) men wanted to get with her vs the seasoning-challenged Daphne. Yet she STILL ended up being a SINGLE BABY MAMA who became the conniving JEZEBEL trying to ensnare a rich young man when her options were reduced to old men. Shows like Bridgerton explain why I spent quarantine rewatching Moesha. I just wanted to see black people (specifically younger black women) thriving and living their lives.......who knew it would be that hard to find that in 2021 tv.
Seriously! I feel this. I tried to find it in Tyler Perry's Sistas. I'm still trying actually, but I won't dwell on that. I would absolutely love to see a television show in 2021 that showcases black women thriving, living good lives, and having healthy relationships with black men.
This is a really interesting subject. I kind of wonder if it isnt partly to do with the Kardashians and the trend of blackfishing that they set off that kind of shifted beauty standard towards socially acceptable black features (so big lips, hips and butts basically) but wrapped in a white-skinned (or close as they can get) parcel, so to speak, isnt to blame. Hollywood (and capitalism) care about money most of all after all so once they saw the popularity of Kinm K and the likes I feel like they realized they could make a whole lot of money off the black aesthetic but without requiring actual black people.
@@nbucwa6621 that's certainly a thought to consider. Personally though, I won't credit Kim K with the downfall of the representation of Black women in television.

What happened after the 90s?: My observation was that when FOX was coming up and struggling to establish itself it used black and brown communities to do that (In Living Color, Martin, Roc, Living Single, NY Undercover etc.), then when it started to experience a measure of success they started to move on and became more "mainstream". I think the UPN also repeated this pattern to a point, they might still be trying to establish themselves and the landscape was different.

as an indian person i really wish there was more south asian representation considering englands long history of colonizing south asia and how there actually were south asians in england.

Not saying you're wrong, but there are period pieces for Asians though, right? I always thought Bridgerton tried including Black representation outside of the "real life" period pieces that focus on trauma. Whereas other POC don't share that experience of no representation outside of trauma.

Lady Granville is an Indian woman

Also: why does nobody make a film with african setting? A historical movie about ethiopia would be cool. They have a rich culture.
All of Africa has a rich culture and history. But academic study is oversaturated in areas like Europe, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Also, you can’t exactly rely on the media for non-selective representation.
Every african country got a rich and unique culture not only ethiopia ya know

Yesssss we Ethiopians have a beautiful culture and a royal family that existed for 1000s of years.

Exactlyyy Take for example in indian movies look at the main characters smh😔
As usual when they try to be "Inclusive", but in reality they just try to bait minorities into watching.
Right, I thought the same thing while watching
I am from a Latin American country, you would not believe the quantity of people offended in the spanish trailer of Netflix ,saying it was not realistic to even include people who are not white as anything but servants. So yes, people who belong to countries that were once a colony and probably have all kinds of race heritage were still offended because they didn't want anything but a white cast in a fictional England,so even tho some countries felt it wasn't enough ,others felt that "woke" inclusion was too much.

when will young, darkskin women get more prominent roles in media and film? we need to see them at the forefront of these stories - not simply stories soley about the black experience and racism, but the more genre-based roles that white women are always getting.
This! Can we just be seen (when we even are on screen) without it making it about our race and skin color constantly. Yess we know we are darkskinned, we deal with racism and colorism on a daily basis, but can we fall in love too? Can we be vampire’s, werewolves or fairy’s too
@@ladyallyally135 right!!!
Have you seen the second season of Bridgerton? I thought it was great that they cast a dark-skinned south Asian woman as one of the main characters in the season.
@@pokefan5ever i did, and i enjoyed it too :) but one season of one show isn't going to equate to the other abundance of representation white women get. also, my original comment was centred more around darkskinned black women.
When there are young black executives in the industry...who are smarter
I (kinda) liked the world they build in Bridgerton because like you said, it felt like colorblind casting. And i liked how they didn't really talk about the characters' race at all because its kinda fun to watch something that has nothing to do with race at all sometimes, but then they DID start talking about it in the show and it made absolutely NO SENSE and it threw me off lol. That bullshit story about ‘the white king who fell in love with one of us and ended racism’ or whatever was fucking awful, they should have just not adressed it at all and that wouldve been better
yeah i love that the black characters were not defined by their struggles from being black
i was like wtf when they explained it but i overall liked that black people were treated so casually and had their own individual plots
@@lucy-janewalsh9047 omg yes, either dont adress it at all or adress it properly, because claiming that 1 man falling in love with a black woman is enough to end racism as a whole is wrong on so many levels, even if its just a tv show
For me it was a rape scene, no discussion.
If a man coming inside a woman without her consent during sex constitutes rape, the opposite apply as well.
It ruined the whole experience for me. Specialty because she still came out as a victim on the situation.
Big red flag.
100% agree and after that the show tried to make daphne the only victim and nothing was talked about how simon felt after being abused??? like what the fuck it bothered me so much
I totally agree. I hated that scene so much that I quit the show altogether. Evening out a lie by sexually coercing your husband to get you pregnant against his will (!) even though he obviously seems to have reasons we don’t yet understand ... I rarely defend men, but this scene is heavy.

I don't know what's worse, Daphne doing it or the show just glossing over it.
@@GoGalaxy u sure can say they were both in the wrong in different ways but like, simons issues with having children couldve been solved with communication. they showed he wanted kids but didnt feel like he could bc of his hang-ups. sexual assault is not a communication problem! its a fundamental disrespect of someones humanity and bodily autonomy problem! if they were having 0 problems in their relationship and marriage beforehand it still wouldve been wrong. there is no excuse EVER for marital rape. besides, the reason daphne did what she did was she knew that (for reasons she didnt understand, but she knew of it nonetheless) simon was avoiding getting her pregnant. she knew she was violating his boundaries without trying to work out why they existed to begin with.
Everyone says it with me: "Men can be SA and it is just as wrong."

So true.
It doesn't matter if they can act or even speak Hindi. All that matters is that they are light skinned and skinny. That's it. It's just sad.
LOL
But you got a point there.
@@lunazen8661 I wouldn’t count Priyanka as a representative. She was much darker skin before and then when Hollywood started calling she only associated herself with white ppl. Even in the show, she starred in she was a “half American/half Indian” character to appease North American and European viewers because they are more accepting of biracial and light-skinned people from any race 🤷🏽♀️
It's like we're going backwards now😕
Thanks for this comment
I loved this!!! That you at first thought one thing but you were able to watch this video and come up with a new POV!! We appreciate this and you
I also thought they did not a bad job after watching it, but this vid opened my eyes.... Thank u for vids like that
Yup so this video achieved its goal and next time you’ll even be able to point this out or even look for actual diversity in another show or movie, and music videos etc you watch with friends or family who might have thought is is what diversity is. Really cool you were open to learning.
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria I agree. I realize there were more TV shows centered around black main characters in the 90s and early 2000s, and that as in, fully black actors. Now biracial and light-skinned - not to mention straight up making white actors pose an entirely different race - is as far as it can get.
We don't see it as a "push for diversity," when diverse character casts have fully fleshed out personalities, and vital roles to the plot.
Not just sitcoms but like 1990-2005 animations were going hard on representation in a way that didnt feel too promotional. like lilo and stitch and stuff.

@ebony b I'm confuseddddddd
This makes me thinks two things.
1. I hadn't considered this at all. This looked super diverse to me and it's kind of a reminder that, because I'm white, any presence of POC in media makes me feel like a show is diverse and I need to learn to ask for more.
2. Khadija is chaotic good, but she's always on the verge of swerving chaotic neutral and that's both exhillerating and terrifying. I will follow this woman's ramblings 'till the day I die.
I also thought it was kinda diverse even tho I'm south asian. It's just goes to show how used to of this we are lol. A little bit feels exciting. And hence that is race baiting.
@@sakuranovaryan9261 Hey, I feel the same way. I didn’t think it was completely diverse but I accepted it because it was one of the most diverse I’ve seen in media or that was so talked about it. Diversity is a fraud, why does a natively white country need diversity? Wheres diversity in mozambique, or nepal, or cambodia, or nigeria? If it was truly ‘representative’ of current uk pop , to play devils advocate, then out of 100 characters only 3-4 would be black, and 12 middle eastern.
Yess!!!

They should have just left it out of the show
@@tosheatower The showrunners said they wanted the show to speak on race, class, and gender of today. If they didn't make such a big deal about the show had something important to say no one would have said anything. But to telegraph it and make a huge stink for your message to be "All we need is love" just ain't cutting it in these end times
Yep I thought Eloise, Benedict and Penelope were gay or bi so was v confused

Benedict has big Bi energy to me and I hope they explore that in the later seasons and to me, Eloise has Asexual vibes or maybe closeted Lesbian. Here’s to hoping I’m right.

Anyone who red the books would've known that wasn't going to happen. Sexuality? Yes, but all very hetero...with macho misogynistic men
Conscious Casting is something my favorite Drama Professor taught us when she picked scenes for us to learn.
That sounds like an art in itlself. Would love to see something like that in real life.
Thats heartwarming
and don't forget the lack of awareness when it comes to males being sexually assaulted (aka, THAT scene with the duke and Daphne) it's so disgusting

Bruh what scene? I didn’t notice an assault.
We make up less than 1% of America, but we are still here
Yeah I see what you mean I agree as well.
It would be an amazing opportunity for the Native community if Netflix took the initiative to cast them properly as Indigenous people.
representation matters!
Marina doesn't. I blame her as much as I blame her surroundings.Meaning not having access to abortion, child support or a home. What I'm saying is not a justification of her actions which are still unethical and made me sad honestly. Can we also talk about the scene where Mrs. Featherington (penelopes mom) had an old man grabbing and turning Marina around LITERALLY LIKE HE WAS CHECKING A SLAVE. THE ONLY OTHER BLACK MAIN (SECONDARY) CHARACTER. SHE WAS ON A STEP/SOAPBOX IM PRETTY SURE TOO.
@@sakuranovaryan9261 I hated colins little "if you would have told me i would have helped" because once again, this is a time where her being outed as pregnant LITERALLY destroyed her chances at a semi normal life. She literally could not have come clean and expected anything good to happen, esp how furious he was that he found out and then dropped her (instead of being the Nice Guy and trying to understand/support her).

Probably also worth mentioning that when the white woman lead r*pes the duke, a black man, she suffers absolutely no scripted redemption arc, punishment etc. and is still portrayed as the tragic heroine just "struggling to get by in a misogynistic world uwu"
It was disturbing to watch and even more disturbing to watch how daphne got the baby and dream life out of it. It's interesting that they went with the oppressed white woman arc rather than the racial divide that they openly mentioned and then forgot all about...)
You see it a little with Marina as well, rather than her problem (the pregnancy) being treated properly by the script, it's just sort of overall viewed as "her fault" and swept under the rug.
Forcing him to do something he has so very clearly NOT wanted to do was so, SO much worse than him letting her believe a lie (that wasn’t even all that harmful - she thought he was infertile and COULDN’T give her children, irl, he just didn’t want to to spite his father who was neglectful, it’s a whole thing.)
But this has always bothered me in period pieces, how they just kinda throw in POC and queer people almost like they’re trying to meet a diversity quota.

We have the trifecta: JEZEBEL mixed /blackish woman who got pregnant YOUNG because she was a "fast" girl and she is SINGLE BABY MAMA now. But this is groundbreaking representation...?
*claps fervently* yes! This part! It took so much effort for me to get over this to finally finish the last four episodes 😫
@@krenee984 ikr! All I could think about after the wedding was "Wait a sec... this show is about... pulling out?!?!!!!!! 😳💥😂" Now that's groundbreaking!
I couldn't stand how they portrayed her, and the fact she ended up with NO ONE....at least for love. The only woc that was in the main cast had to be made in a disloyal way
They want us to continue to settle for less
@@OReily08080 agreed on both counts! I was so disgusted after I limped across the finish line with it. 😩 This show felt so lazy and uninspired to me. Hopefully they focus elsewhere next season otherwise...hard pass for me!
Were the people in Bridgerton not living their lives or something?
@@elvia9947 They were, but the people with significant storylines definitely were not young unambiguous black women........They were in the background at balls or just strolling around town smh.
They really did queerbait us HARD with that Bridgeton dude just for him to date the dressmaker and be straight
Wait what??? He doesn't get together with the artist?? Does Penelope (I think that was her name) at least get together with eloise? 😕
exactly i was like HUHHH ???
Do y’all forget that people can be bi?
@@megcassie7276 oop- ur so right but it’s the fact that they didn’t explore his sexuality, the only thing was him catching his mentor or whatever and it pretty much stopped there. i can def see him exploring his sexuality in later seasons but that was the major issue w this season
@@ginabeana3469 sexuality can be a journey. This notion that everyone needs to know everyone’s sexuality at once is toxic and it stems from things like film and social media.
It’s a part of character development too. You have to leave the viewer wanting to know more.
The Artist brother had the gayest vibes and arguably the only sexual chemistry I felt in the entire show with the other artist friend. It’s pretty lame considering he was one of the only interesting characters in my opinion.
You get one sex scene and a bunch of fucking nothing.
I thought so too, i thought he was about to get with his friend but they just did a sharp NOPE
I 100% expected him to be gay
OMG YESSS, i was expecting something from them at the end, kinda like a promise to the second season :(
And he wasn’t even gay!
Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the brothers 🥴
ma’am i have only one piece of “criticism” and it is never apologise to england
we deserve it entirely (the accents were pretty good though! Obviously no one actually talks like the fancy first one lol but the sounds were correct, and the south London one was actually almost accurate)
I had this exact thought when I heard that too
I third that
as an Englishwoman, fourth that
Why not?
Me (has never watched Khadija): Oh, I'm excited to watch this video, I can't wait to hear this show get torn apart even more
Khadija: Nieces, nephews, and niblings
Me: 🥺(as the kids would put it, /pos)
