      Not saying you're wrong, but there are period pieces for Asians though, right? I always thought Bridgerton tried including Black representation outside of the "real life" period pieces that focus on trauma. Whereas other POC don't share that experience of no representation outside of trauma.

      @@sabrinanaser9327 Maybe for East Asians? I haven't seen any but as far as I know, there isn't a lot. If the intention of the show was to create Black representation that doesn't focus on trauma, then it makes sense that there weren't any Asians. As a South Asian we have almost no positive representation in mainstream media and I'm not sure if there are period pieces involving South Asians at all. I'm Indian and I can't think of a single show where there are Indian characters who are likable and complex, rather than the usual unattractive nerd. However, I totally get why we might not see Asians in Bridgerton specifically.

    The way Bridgerton just mixed up different regional cultures in India as 'Indian'. Them being from Bombay, speaking Marathi, but also using 'appa' (a South Indian word) with didi (Hindi) and Bon (bengali). And as a Bengali living in North India all my life i recognise that isn't accurate. They take random bits of aesthetically pleasing representation and just amalgamate it into 'indian girl'.

    • @marietailor3100
      @marietailor3100 2 роки тому +48

      Yeah… I dunno. I see it differently? Like, when I watched Black Panther (I’m black) I noticed that they have shit from all over the continent mixed in. On the one hand, sure it’s not specific. But in the other, I genuinely wonder if idiosyncratic specificity actually can be more representative than one single specific type of person? For example, on the continent on Africa there are of course thousands of cultures and languages and traditions and so no one movie could ever represent them all with any depth. So if you can’t do that (if there just isn’t the time or space to do it), is pulling out specifics from different parts of the area you’re trying to represent potentially a better way to allow people to see themselves in a set of characters then getting one very specific region and culture exactly right?
      I’m not 100% convinced that that’s the case or anything, but I do think it’s something to think about. Like, it seems like the casting decision for this season was made in direct response to the colourism critique given that the Indian girl in question is one of the darker skinned Indian woman anywhere on tv and is definitely the darkest skin woman (or second maybe) of the whole series. So it feels like they were trying to represent as many people as they could with these 3 characters? But I don’t know - maybe specificity would be better. On the other hand, we have a fictional England where presumably slavery doesn’t exist on either side of pond, and colonialism hasn’t somehow abolished the mutual societal respect of hierarchy and ranking between high English and high Indian society so it feels weird on its face too, I guess to me, to hypothesize too much about a fantastical romantic world that simply could have never existed because all modern distinctions are based on history that isn’t shared with the history of the show.
      I dunno. Im probably overthinking this but you gave me a really interesting set of thoughts to tease out so thank you for that!

    • @annbrown9273
      @annbrown9273 2 роки тому +19

      Actually, think it's great to learn terms of affection or greeting from different parts of India. Why limit it to one region? If the goal of the show is to expose people to different aspects of Indian culture, then including terms from different regions is wonderful. These are likely terms many would never have known had they not chosen to include them. It's not that it isn't accurate. They never specified a region of India. I see it as inclusive rather than an amalgamation.

      At the end of the day if it's a personal choice of you want to call only non binary people latinx and every one else latino that's your right. It was joked that "latinx" was created by white people (I wouldn't be surprised). LatinOs is for all Latin people men or women, latinx is was suppose to be for just the non binary. Obviously, today we know that pulling out is not an effective method for birth control but we have to consider the context of the show here. Simon made his boundaries clear several times. I agree, he should have explained his reasons for not having children before entering the relationship but it's ultimately his choice if/when/how to tell her and Daphne crossed these boundaries both in the sex scene and when she read his letters. What bothered me most was the dialog that followed the sex scene because Daphne is still portrayed as the innocent, likeable character. It could have been an interesting turning point in which the flaws of her character are revealed...

    I would love to see more of Simon’s auntie, Lady Danbury, beyond being the Duke of Hastings aunt; and more of Eloise - I gather the books go into each siblings’ romance, but I’d love to just see her being sassy and single, maybe get into a profession (it is a fantasy, even if it’s trying to be a bit historical).

  • @marietailor3100
    @marietailor3100 3 роки тому +1372

    So I kind of have a problem with calling Eloise (and her relationship with her best friend) as inherently queer baiting. There are a few reasons for this. I’ve noticed that this is a trend that tends to get mentioned when two same-sex individuals have a close and intimate friendship. But I didn’t really see anything between those two characters that textually read as anything other than a close friendship. People also tend to respond similarly to a man and a woman being intimate friends as well and I’m kind of over it? Why is it that friendships depicted with nuance and complexity and vulnerability have to then be contextualized by others and being romantic or sexual? Another issue I take with it is that I’ve noticed a lot of people remarking that Eloise sort of chaffing at the constraints she’s presented by her family and society is also a marker that she must be queer. This bothers me immensely. I’m sorry but being a woman who is interested expanding your horizons, and doesn’t want to play a part of this weird patriarchal structure doesn’t indicate anything about your sexuality. Any woman regardless of who she was interested in could come to the same conclusion. Likewise, plenty of queer women (myself included) love dresses and balls and jewelry (and like yeah - I’d still want to go to university and read books but that’s kind of my point) and I just find these associations to be extremely limiting. I guess what I’m saying is that there are LOTS of ways to be queer and I feel like we picked up on one of the most stereotypical and decided that that SHOULD be queer even though there’s no real reason why that necessarily has to be the case.

      I was surprised to know that the Queen portrayed was real. She was England's first mixed race queen. And there were mixed people in British monarchy, and also in their entertainment...ie Beethoven. Ie Shakespear and some of his characters. So, I thought of bridgerton as less like colorblind casting than somewhat realistic. But I honestly don't care because why do we even want to be so integrated into EUROPEAN history or fantasy? Why do they have to do that shit? Why not just make a movie about the black bourgier in America? They do exist. Asians in their original cultural settings? Ming Dynasty anyone? There are plenty of historical contexts that haven't been explored yet. Btw, Asians are over 50% of the world population. They have their own homogenous countries with full media industries. Hell, I watch so many Asian dramas on Netflix. So honestly, yall, just stfu and enjoy. Dont like not being included in European period dramas? Don't put it on a pedestal and embrace your own cultural stories. But you know, im just a girl a little irritated with virtue signaling after the 50, 60s, 70s and 80s and 90s where black roles and full shows and movies clearly existed and made money. Marvin Van Peebles anyone? There's plenty of shows on Netflix with dark skinned main roles. Hell, Scandal had a whole dark skinned black woman. But whatever, just forget all that shit huh? It's honestly something that reflects to real life as well, with so many women uneducated when it comes to sex ed, they almost always get taken advantage of when it comes to their first time. As a POC, I would actually love more original historical series about people of color... all color... any color, based off either their own histories or complete fantasy. Like what BOTHERED me about this "colorblind" (not really) cast in Bridgerton is... does the story HAVE to be based off white history? Couldn't they create an ACTUAL fantasy world and not lift off of any stereotypically white history? Or a romance based on actual black history, or latin american history, or Asian history. There are ENOUGH shows about this kind of romance/theme. This is what confuses me about POC wanting to show themselves and their cultures are equally important as white history, but we're just going to insert ourselves into white historical drama??!? Are our histories not rich and beautiful? I love Jane Austen and actually I read my first Bridgerton book probably 10+ years ago, but as a POC I've never wanted to put myself in their shoes like how the Asian woman said, to me, it just doesn't work. My culture and values don't match and I'm sure if I saw a main character that looked like me (South Asian) in this show I'd just find it hilariously dumb because the thing is, I am more than the color of my skin, I have a whole culture and history which absolutely doesn't fit with this story and I don't think I'd enjoy it if they tried to explain why I was there (the king's son is dating a brown chick woot). I watch shows for escapism, so if that was their goal with Bridgerton they did a really bad job of it, because at the end of the day, I agree with your point. It was painfully obvious what they were trying to do with the cast, it felt very performative and it didn't have that "artless" feel that you would imagine from something that is supposed to be purely fantastical. If they removed that explanations, and maybe made the entire world feel like a different world altogether (like for example, maybe change the name of the country, and not name characters based off actual historical monarchs) but kept everything else the same except these minor details (and more TASTEFUL POC inclusion) then I probably would have enjoyed it. As it stands, it just felt like they were trying to tick boxes "okay we got 2 asians in this shot, lets sprinkle about 6 black people over here, oh we haven't reached our hispanic quota! Someone go find someone to fit this empty space here"

I study hispanic literature but bc I'm also mexican we also study Indigenous literature (and I'm part of a community tlaxcalteca) and it makes me so mad that we are invisible. Mexico is one of the most diverse countries because there are tons of Indigenous communities. But our stories never get the chance to be told by ourselves, it seems like we only exist as a country below the US that only has immigrants, drugs, stereotypical hot woman and the only role we can play is narcotraficante or poor people. Even when Coco came out they mixed cultures (mixteca, Tarahumara, nahua and then put mariachis) and misinterpreted the true vision of día de muertos and they don't let communities shine really. I don't want someone from other country to tell my story from their point of view and I don't want to be included in a lame role. I want the opportunity to tell my own stories from my people.

    This video is so good. I'm a white girl and I learned a lot from it. It's a shame that many of these things were not obvious to me before so thank you so much for that change in perspective. It's easy to forget how privileged I am that I see so many people in movies or shows who look like myself. It really matters what we see and how it's presented. I write fantasy stories and I always try to be open minded and have diverse characters. That sentence "you have to work twice to get half" really hit me because I never thought about it, I never needed to and it makes me hate our unfair society so much. It's similar to women and men. When you belong to the privileged group you don't need to think about the not-privileged group. I hope we can change that

She only wanted to marry him to hide her 'early' pregnancy and then wanted to trap Colin into raising a child that wasn't his, but having to do so because if word came out that he wasn't the father their marriage and reputation (as well as the family's and the baby's reputation) would be ruined.

      @@k.c7655 In general, I always find it difficult to equate the oppression of one with the oppression of the other, because in doing so one forgets the individual context and one very quickly infers a less bad past, which can, however, lead to very similar complex consequences in the present.
      Now what she said is and I quote "prejudice against them can sometimes be strong. It's rooted in history to as it often is". I have to admit that I am not an expert on Polish history, but I can still give you an example of such Polish oppression, which is even deliberately taken up by the ruling party today, and I think that is also what the comment refers to.
      A long-time companion of the PiS leader wrote on his Facebook page at the end of 2015 that Kaczyński wanted to follow in the footsteps of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who ruled Poland quasi-dictatorially from 1926 to 1935. In fact, PiS has placed its current policies under the headings of "rehabilitation of the state" and "recovery of society". This was precisely the core of Piłsudski's ideology, whose movement called itself "Sanacja" (healing) and was dedicated to the recovery of the nation.
      In 1934, the government set up an internment camp for Ukrainian nationalists, communists and other prominent opponents of the regime. The trend towards an authoritarian state continued to intensify; the rights of the Slavic minorities were massively restricted, and Jews were discriminated. The German minority, which was secretly supported financially by the Nazi state, also had its rights increasingly restricted, despite the officially good German-Polish relations since the non-aggression treaty between Hitler and Piłsudski, to which the growing enthusiasm of many of the ethnic Germans for National Socialism also contributed.
      I think this example shows very clearly how the past and their different perceptions often overlap. So when the Polish government fuels hatred towards foreigners today by using the same narratives as in the 1930s, we see exactly such an analogy and the reason for us to reflect on such statements and thinking.

We can't do that if we don't acknowledge that the two are different (there is nothing wrong with being bi-racial, own it) . (the only people that benefit from having a little to no representation is white people, of course they would give us the two in one by killing two birds with one stone) also could you elaborate on donald glover benefitting from colorism cuz...🤔

      @@kaiworld5215 this is the dumbest stuff. How do you think light skin black people came into existence? A significant amount of light skinned black people in the US are so because of mixed ancestry, whose results are often indistinguishable from being "mixed" proper (genetically, physically, whatever else). Infact, having "mixed ancestry" might make one more mixed up than a "properly" bi-racial person. Malcolm X had light skin and red hair. Red hair is recessive, that means both of his parents had to carry a copy of the gene. This man was mixed asf.
      Get out of here with this, because im sure a massive portion of the "black" Americans who hold this position would be themselves considered "mixed" by ghanians or nigerians or latin americans. If a bi-racial choses not to identify with "black", that's their choice. But propping up these weird gatekeeps for those who share in so many struggles, rooted in the same theory of race, is unproductive.

    i resonated so hard with the lady from the conversation you linked / used for this video. i am southeast asian and i cannot describe how much i love regency / period literary works, tv series, and film pieces. i grew up loving jane austen novels, i've watched downton abbey in an unhealthy amount of times, and i've critiqued every period films to know which one i liked best. and because i love it SO much, i've always longed for my race to be represented so that i may "live vicariously through [them]" as eloise bridgerton would've said. upon the announcement of henry golding joining the cast of netflix's adaptation of persuasion, i thought "WOW, finally a regency era male lead of a southeast asian descent!" but apparently he isnt the male lead but the insufferable cousin of the female lead. DISAPPOINTED but i guess i'll take it. it's the closest we could get any asian to star in a period drama.
    i have high hopes for the next seasons of bridgerton now that they casted south asians as a female lead. i hope they will include more asians with speaking lines in the future.
