  • Brier sings Fields of Athenry, an irish song.
    Movie editing made with Ulead
    By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl call:
"Michael, they have taken you away,
    For you stole Trevelyn's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."
    CHORUS
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
    By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man call
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity."
    CHORUS
    By a lonely harbor wall,
She watched the last star fall
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived to hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

this song can bring tears to just about all who hear it. the famine was a terrible time in ireland, and like all sad times theres a lesson to be learned. I first heard this being sung by a small lad about 7 years old on a dublin Street one sunday afternoon 8 years ago.

I just watched Ireland Vs Spain during Euro12. - I think the Irish supporters are truly amazing. I heard how they sang this song eventhough they lost 0-4. In fact, you couldnt even hear any of the spanish supporters. I thin this is what football is all about; You celebrate victories together- and you stick toghether even if you loose. What an amazing this to whitness - you are the true winners! :-) Greetings from Denmark

There was famine everywhere...in Germany people stole rotten potatoes from the prison fields, to keep from starving. Wasn't confined to Ireland or any place else...but lots of beautiful songs have come out of Ireland, many inspired by the famine and future 'troubles'. God Bless Em...and all right thinking people everywhere. Love Paddy Reilly. My ancestors were Irish, Scot and English. I'm proud of all 3.

Let it go, for God's sake. No English person alive was responsible for what happened 150 years ago. I guess I need to re read history, for I'm pretty sure people in England were also starving, in Germany, America and most of Europe too. Incidentally, my mother's family were all Irish and proud of it. This has nothing to do with Irish, but with ppl who attempt to keep fanning the flames of hatred for past actions. What good is accomplished by stirring the pot.
