With the Amazon Echo you're reduced down to using a web browser to use UA-cam, with no voice control what so ever. The screen needs to be an OLED. An LCD on its lowest brightness setting is still kind of bright after your eyes adjust to the dark in your bedroom or wherever.
Nah, this one gets so dim you'll never be bothered by it. Same time, I still wish it was OLED because I hate seeing the gray backlight bleed through a "black" background.
right! I think this device does seem to go quite dark but I can't bear even a charging indicator light on my Surface when I need to go to sleep. Something to keep in mind for users. Not sure about AMOLED on a device screen that's always on though.
@@Thisath100 Right, right; the display would have to randomly bump the clockface by a few pixels every few minutes to prevent image persistence problems. Tough problem.
You can always say OK/Hey Google Display off, as I have a pair of Insiginia Voice Smart with Google Assistant, and do it all the time before I go to bed. In fact if you go into the Google Home App for Android(I don't use iOS so not sure of what features are there) you can set Downtime mode where the display goes off at a set time, and comes on at a set time alone with Google not taking your questions other then set/cancel/snooze Alarm, or what time is it. I picked up that portable Insignia Google Home Speaker with the built in subwoofer, clock, and temperature displayfor $29 bucks last year. Absolutely love it. Home group is awesome and I have smart plugs and smart lights all over my apartment for easy Voice Control.
Great vid. I'd be more inclined to pick one up if it was a bit less expensive. Bet they'll drop $20 off the price around the holidays. Definitely want to see a comparison between this and the Amazon Show 5, too.
If anyone's conflicted about this, I recommend you take a look at the Insignia Smart clock! It's a bluetooth speaker, google home assistant, and clock in one package. You should be able to get one for around $30 and it's plenty loud. The only issue that some may have is the google assistant updates only occur when Insignia rolls them out, so there's no guarantees that it will stay up to date.
I've been waiting for this to come out! I got my family Phillips Hue smart bulbs for our bedrooms and so far the only way to turn on and off the lights is via the app, widgets, or physical switch I bought for each room. I've been wanting a google home mini in my room, but this is much better because it will give me the option to turn on, off, and dim the lights with my voice, as well as, allow me to check the whether while I'm getting ready for work and such. Though I did just get a new alarm clock for Christmas that's honestly the best alarm clock I've ever used and it's super easy to adjust the alarm. Then again, I have to remember to reset the alarm each time, which means I have to get out of bed everytime I forget to set it, so there's room for improvement. I'll have to decide if it's really worth it to me.

If you don't need the full color LCD display Best Buy has one with a much better speaker, called the nsignia voice smart bluetooth speaker with google assistant which are a bit cheaper and it shows the time, alarm, and temp on the display. I've had a pair of them for a couple of years now, and they have been great additions to my home. Just never rely on any Google Home device as your sole alarm clock because if the power, and/or Internet goes out they become useless, so set your phone's alarm as well 5 minutes behind.
I bought something similar without the color display. Insignia has a google home with a 7-segment (think old alarm clock) display with a secondary one for showing current temperature, volume and other context based tidbits of information. I think they are $45
Does it follow the alarm on your phone? I work swing so my alarm follows a swing shift calendar and if this will alarm from that schedule it is an automatic purchase.
The alarm must be set on the clock itself. You do have the option to have alarms recur weekly or have the clock "suggest" a different alarm for you each night. This may be a helpful feature to work with your swing shift, despite not syncing with your phone.
@@doublet91 I definitely understand your struggle! Like I said I think your best bet for this would be the suggested alarm feature. Audio quality compared to google mini? PS. I think any smart display with a camera (like the Echo 5 you mentioned at the end) should have a physical shutter to cover the camera rather than a software switch to merely disable it
So a Google Home Mini with a screen? I'm not sure if I should replace my mini with this. I could put my mini elsewhere though. I think I'd rather have this over the Echo Show 5 specifically for the lack of a camera.

As it is with all of these, the relevant question is does it work fully as an alarm clock. Does it have a power back up. Can you set the alarm and use it if your internet connection fails. If this is not the case you need a real alarm clock anyway and the utility of the device would be modest. Remember an alarm clock has to work every single time.
While the alarm and timing functions of the device do remain functional if the device becomes disconnected from the internet, it must remain plugged into power at all times.
Cool product, I'm just not quite sure if I can see a reason to buy this rather than a smart display though, which often costs the same amount while on sale.
I got this because bundling it with my tablet was $15 cheaper than buying the tablet alone, but I still haven't taken it out of the box. I just don't understand the need if you have a smartphone and my cable box tells me what time it is if I'm in bed without my phone.
Picked this up for CAD50 during sale. Setting up took a night. After setting up, it kept losing connection super frequently. I wasn't able to make it do anything. Returned it.
Does it have a battery? If not I wouldn't consider it reliable enough as alarm clock. Does it have a temperature (or humidity) sensor? Because these things is something I would welcome more on an alarm clock than low quality phone calls. Seems to me like something that leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe in next gen it will be worthy of purchase.
The Lenovo Smart Clock does not have a battery or temperature/humidity sensor, though you can ask Google to check the weather for you. The alarms and timing feature work if the device becomes disconnected from the internet, but the device must be plugged in to power at all times.
Much like you said in the conclusion, this is definitely gonna be a great companion to my Google Home mini i have in the living room and android tablet on my kitchen cabinet
I've had a pair of the Best Buy insignia Voice Smart Bluetooth speakers with Google assistant for a few years now(one in my bedroom, the other in my kitchen/dining/fireplace room), and with the built in basic clock, and temp display, they have been great additions to my home, and the sound quality is really good with their bigger speaker, along with more better control of the volume level going from 0 - 100% plus they also have a USB port for charging up stuff, but I will say don't rely on one of these as your only alarm clock in case the power goes out, and/or the internet goes out because then they are useless!! Set your phone's alarm 5 mins behind your Google Home device just in case, as I've had it happen to me a couple of times during bad overnight storms. So yeah if you don't mind a bigger device, don't need the full LCD this Lenovo version has, then look for the Insigina version when Best Buy puts them on sale, or you can find a good deal on a used one, and one other pro tip, if you find one that someone says is just flashing 4 lines in the display, you can usually reset them by holding down the mic mute button on the back for a few seconds, it will reset itself with some tones, and will then ask you to download the Google Home app for Android, and it will take you threw the setup process. Having said all that I hope Lenovo makes a version like the insignia with a bigger and better speaker, but smaller 2-3 in LCD display, for about $50 USD, and I would snatch it up ASAP!
This devices makes me really wonder if I can by a tablet and a small nice speaker and install something to turn it into this kind of assistant, because you can take one $30 tablet with a $15 and I think it might provide more value in long term
A great review for a product I will never use. 1. I use my phone as alarm clock and I don't use Snooze, never have. 2. I wouldn't want an electronic spy in my home.
I know I would never put a spy in my house let alone carry it in my pocket Sent from my phone with gps,2 or more cameras and mics, wifi and mobile data that I can't actually turn off
I want one now but 80 bucks is step and I feel like the same functionality could be updated into existing products sans display of course but I feel as though that is a formality if anything
It's buggy, current issues include no media alarm when net drops out, no backup alarm, sound cast or Bluetooth drops out after about 10mins going to it...:(
Do you have to say "OK google" first or can you just blurt out a half-assed "stop" or "snooze" to add 5 minutes to the alarm as it wakes you up in the morning? Cause sleepy me ain't saying "OK google" to talk to an alarm clock... At that point it's easier to just turn around and punch the poor thing.

A review of the Alexa one would be nice. I use Bixby, my friend uses Google Assistant and my dad uses Alexa.
I got mine for $40 on Black Friday, I love it!
cant you set alarm on smartphones, they have speakers and can make phone calls and you already have one.
A great review for a product I will never use.
1. I use my phone as alarm clock and I don't use Snooze, never have.
2. I wouldn't want an electronic spy in my home.
I know I would never put a spy in my house let alone carry it in my pocket
Sent from my phone with gps,2 or more cameras and mics, wifi and mobile data that I can't actually turn off
The device is good for someone who doesn't want to have a phone around before they sleep, as it can disrupt your sleep patterns.
I want one now but 80 bucks is step and I feel like the same functionality could be updated into existing products sans display of course but I feel as though that is a formality if anything
Waiting for the eventual price cut...
It's buggy, current issues include no media alarm when net drops out, no backup alarm, sound cast or Bluetooth drops out after about 10mins going to it...:(
Awesome review as always
The Lenovo Smart Clock can actually show your photos as a clock face. Although you can't set a specific picture, just an album of photos.
You still use the Key 2. Respect!
I literally know that Pinback song from an old video when Mr. Mobile was still at Pocketnow
I actually find it to be a bit annoying having to talk to my Alexa to snooze it.
PixelSheep - Technik. Meinung. Gaming. Use ur iPhone like me
@@dylanpower1438 afraid I can't :D would probably use a normal alarmclock instead
