Smart Speakers, home automation gadgets, we're seeing a flood of these products hit the market recently and we've reviewed quite a few of them already.
So, what's so special about the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential with Alexa Built-In?
Out of the box you'll find the smart clock, power cable and a useless little thing called an instruction manual.
Now this isn't the first Lenovo Smart Clock they've released. The first version was actually customized to work with Google Assistant - so the 2nd gen model's Alexa integration is a nice addition.
Power comes via this standard DC cable, but you can buy wireless charging boards sold separately that not only power the clock but your other gadgets like watches and smartphones as well.
Just like a lot of the Google Home Mini's and Amazon Echo's, Lenovo has opted for this synthetic cloth material for the exterior giving it this clean, textured look and feel.
The 4-inch screen makes this Smart Clock one of the smallest smart displays on the market. Despite this, the adaptive brightness setting…. makes sure you can actually see the time from the other side of the room.
Across the top you've got Volume controls, a button to connect with Alexa, as well as an alarm button used to dismiss or snooze alarms.
Once connected to your Alexa through your smartphone app, it can be used to stream music, or podcasts through Amazon Music, Spotify and many more.
As a clock, you've got instant access to time, humidity, temperature as well being able to ask the same questions you normally would to your Alexa Home speaker.

But if you're worried about privacy, there's no camera included and the microphone can be muted courtesy of the switch on the rear.
So, what do we like about the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential with Alexa Built-In?
You don't even need Alexa for this thing to be functional, as a handy nightstand alarm clock, it works perfectly with no additional integration.
It looks great, doesn't blind you at 4am when you're trying to figure out what time it is and the alarm tone is a lot less jarring than our last alarm clock.
So, what's the downside?

I opened mine yesterday and it worked for like 6 hour’s. I took it to my room and it doesn’t turn on. And they’re is no turn off/On button 😡 now I have this alarm clock that doesn’t work. I literally only used it for 6 hours, I’m getting my money back

I had the Lenovo smart clock with google and I loved it other than saying ‘hey google’ all the time, so this was a no brainier for me. Unfortunately it is broken and useless. It just doesn’t hear you, you have to yell for it to respond and it takes several goes to get it to wake up. There isn’t a setting to adjust the sensitivity.
Secondly, the auto brightness is a joke. You cannot disable it and in a darkish room it’s so dim you can’t see it. You can adjust the brightness level but after 5 mins it goes back to being dim again. On top of that, it constantly goes light and dark depending what’s on your TV screen. I don’t expect this will be fixed as Lenovo seem to have washed their hands of it already. Avoid.

Terrible product, the brightness auto-adjusts to unreadable levels an theres no way to turn it off, I cant even belive that a modern product could f*** up so badly..
