I'm only playing AoE4 right now but I've watched almost all his videos. They are so nice and I don't have to think too much haha, except when the math comes out.
An important thing you missed - by getting cavalier on castle you’ll get paladins quicker than any civ once hitting imperial age. Getting paladins before everyone else can easily snowball the game… and it’s 50% off!
When I feel down I always try to remember that SotL still has some civ overviews open and that the potential of remaking old ones is also there. It's what gives me hope! :)
Hit and run cavalry tactics too strong, devs plz nerf Devs: Fine... have rifled muskets and artillery Mongols: wtf! Tartars: dude... Europe: lol time to suck it Eurasian steppe. Cossacks: just adapt to the meta dudes
I always viewed Flemish Militia as a way to bypass the barracks entirely. One upgrade gets you a fully upgraded champion/pike hybrid unit that can be built at a town center.
Interesting, the one true question is when to use the Revolution at any point in the game. Its a fatal decision. And damn, Squarespace is everywhere. Congrats on the sponsorship.
A few days ago I played as Burgundians in an online multiplayer game. I had 5 towncenters, was cranking out villagers and had paladins to assist my allies. I hit Flemish Revolution to make an instant army after I hit my population cap. Suddenly having the largest military in the game allowed me to completely overpower one enemy that we were struggling against. Took some time to get farmers and lumberjacks back to work, but I was a pocket player and had the time to rebuild.
When I play Burgundians, I tend to get double-bit axe as soon as I can - i.e. as soon as I have a lumber camp. I think that it might even be worthwhile to build the lumber camp earlier than most civs would. The tech comes in early enough that it would be hard for an opponent to punish you for it. With it only costing 50 food (and 50 wood, though I don't really consider that a serious consideration since it increases wood-gather rate, and I'm getting it before I actually need the wood for something else), it doesn't really seem to hurt my early game. At worst, getting double-bit axe early would delay feudal age by one vil, and I suspect that it usually won't even do that.
I felt like adding the Burgundians made the Joan of Arc campaign missions quite a bit trickier to navigate when you only had finite units. The coustilliers can be pretty dangerous to engage.
I'm very glad that the Economy overview is back. The analysis of each aspect is how good a civ is going with that specific strategy, so Economy might reflect how good the civ is in booming, and that is a important information.
It really wouldnt have aged well if he released one in the first 2 weeks. UU would have been in a tier of its own back then, cav mobility that one shots half the units in the game and 3 shots a french cavalier? Nope, not going near that till they're nerfef
I really like Burgundians, their Flemish Revolution tech works like the Ragnarok god power in Age of Mythology which converts all of the player's Gatherers and Dwarves into Heroes of Ragnarok.
The Coustillier is great in Hammer and Anvil tactics. the high upfront damage makes them able to do immense damage on a charge and then pull out, while your anvil unit acts to keep the enemy in place or punish them for breaking and pursuing.
Now that was a classy add read! Straight and to the point while still saying everything that needed to be told to know about the product. And without killing the mood/feel of the video so far! True professional!
I remember when I first discovered this channel, I thought, "this guy's stuff is really good, but his intro is too long." Eventually it grew on me and I realized his audience is probably a bunch of nerds like me who aren't in a hurry to be anywhere else anyway, so who cares if it's long. Glad to hear the intro again
Burgundians are my favourite civ so for once I actually knew most of what was in this video, but it's good to get confirmation of what I already suspected in a few areas and the comparison of their cavs to other civs' knights was interesting. I'll also probably end up mixing a few of their unique unit into my armies more often, I didn't realise how good the build time was.
That classic guitar riff starting up always brings peace to my heart. Might not be the best thing to hear, but I love falling asleep or just relaxing to your videos. It's got just enough that I can watch it, but not enough that I have to pay 100% attention to understand what's happening.
I dread the Imperial Age because I know my town no longer looks like the cute little village I started making in the beginning and has now become a gross monument to production 😭
one thing that I don't think is apparent from the video is that the +25% damage applies to attack bonuses as well, so although it looks almost useless for the bombard cannon and cannon galleon, it's quite a big difference
I’m honestly really happy to see you taking a sponsor Spirit. You deserve it, and if this is what it takes to make more/better content, then we’re all in favor!
The layout of this video is exceptional. Unfortunately the coustillier video is out of date after the changes. I would be nice if SOTL could update the video. Equal resources gives you 9 knights and 11 coustilliers. Lanchester's law comes into play as the initial extra damage used by extra coustilliers will have a snowball effect. Optimally, if 4 attack one knight they can take it out with the 4 initial hits. DPS and damage per minute do not fairly portray fights as fights will only last 10 to 20 seconds.
I guess there's a bit of synergy between their unique tech and team bonus. Getting that food income after removing most of your economy to start rebuilding the villager count.
Not really an issue, you will overboom before getting the tech. So you will research it with 3k+ food in the bank, i really dont think 30 food/min make any difference 11
We are at a point where your intro music triggers positive vibes from pre Corona times when I used to watch your Videos while getting dressed for fun activities or between AoE2 Matches :) keep up the good work and your humorous way to deliver educational AoE Content!
I just find it weird that the Coustillier uses a fauchard on horseback. That... wouldn't be ideal. >__> Make more sense if they attacked with a couched lance then switched to a mace. The fauchard was done most likely to make them more visually striking though.
It does kind of bother me logic-wise but I have to admit it looks cool. Though it doesn't look as ridiculous as Knights with only a sword, or, worse, Cataphracts, just merely tapping infantry with their swords, of all weapons, and mowing them down. You indeed nailed it that Byzantine Cataphracts or Clibanarii irl used maces, and the Parthian model they were based on had two-handed lances, referred to as a contus by the Romans.
I can see Flemish Revolution being a tech that you would certainly use to seal the deal for a victory, like a final Screw You moment. Like, imagine you’re already winning, but in doing so the other player was able to fight off most of your units leaving you with small numbers to finish the job of destroying his base. You retreat for now, leaving him to think he can rebuild in peace. But, then he notices a huge army of like maybe 90 to 100 Flemish Militia marching their way to his base and he just barely managed to get a few units out. He already knew he was losing, but not like this.
th relic bonus can be really strong if you look at it saving 5 pop in late game which can lead to army advantage. with 5 relics a teammate needs 8 less farmers for hussar/paladin spam
I like how they get a knight aubstitute as their unique unit AND bonuses to their knights, gives you interresting options to play around with. Like the Magyar's Huzsars being a cooler and better hussar, but they also get cheaper hussars.
You kinda missed the big thing about Burgundian Paladin: they hit you 1min earlier than usual, as you can start the upgrade immediatly when hitting imp (as opposed to after finishing chav).
I think Flemish Militia really shines in teamfights. Even if you get rushed, if you can build back up your economy near the safety of allies, you can spam villagers and then toggle to a very large amount of a very solid unit, especially at the end of the game. Also the Coustillier is amazing for backing up your teams pushes/defending.
Literally looking for this video (and sad it didn’t exist yet) this morning. I just bought the expansion this morning on Steam sale, and I’m excited to try this civ. Thanks for timely review!
age of mythology did kind of have a similar version of flamish revolution wich was the ragnarok god power for some nordic civs, but it was way superior since it was completely free, the units it transfered into also were hero units and didnt atually block you from building more collectors or midgets, it basically resets your eco instead of commpletely halting it
AOE3's revolution kinda did the same thing the Flemish Revolution does with revolution, turning all your villagers into minutemen, but you couldn't build vilagers after! You had to rescue them from treasures.
I love this civ, if it wasn't for the infamous Flemish Revolution i'm sure a lot more people would love it. Interesting build order possibilities, no strong units but instead relying on strong power spikes, interesting Paladin+Handcanoneer late game composition.
I wonder how much more a civ is picked directly after a new SOTL civ overview is released. My guess? It’s A LOT! Great vid! I’m hoping on now to play with… yep: Burgundians. 😎

A fun thing my friend and I have done with burgundians: On Black Forest he will play burgundians, and I will play lithuanians. I do a normal fast castle, then start building as many castles as I can, and mine all the gold and stone near my base. collect relics, and start spamming leitis. When I run out of pop space i start deleting villagers until i have 200 leitis. He booms to 200 villagers, uses flemish revolution if we start to get overwhelmed before I hit critical mass on leitis, and that is the only military he makes. just sends me resources for the rest of the game. It has not failed yet.
