I fixed my plant from having yellowing leaves by removing the pups (once they were big enough to survive on their own) and repotting in a clear container to watch future growth. All are doing great.
You are the ONLY one who answered my concern about yellowing of the leaves on my pilea. Thank you so much. Crazy me, I didn't think about feeding my plant so now it's nutrient deficient! Thank you for the info!
I want to praise this video! The poor pilea has been patient with me using what I could glean elsewhere but has 2 of the problems you so clearly show and diagnose. Thanks so much! I'm off to fertilize my pilea and its pups. ❤😊
I have a huge one and it propagates so much! So my house is full of little plants as well and it just keeps on growing to the point we will need a new house for it 😂
Thank you so much for this video. I've been searching for help for my pilea, which has all of this problems by the way😅, for so long and couldn't find anything helfpull. Your video really helped me. And now I can bring my pilea back to her glory. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this detailed lesson on Pilea plants. Yours is the only video that tells in detail how to solve many problems with this plant. My pilea has the brown edges on the leaves. I will try making some banana tea for a potassium boost. Much appreciated.
Hi there, Thank you so much. I am glad the video was helpful to you. Instead of Banana tea, I would suggest you to use compost or seaweed solution or manure or worm castings etc. After doing some research on Banana tea, I found out that it can harm the plants more than doing any good. Please check out my video on Harmful effects of Banana Tea. ua-cam.com/video/oM6-UjZa3iw/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just got my first Pilea in May. Seems to be doing good, but had it outside and it has gotten a lot of rain lately. I will be moving it undercover of porch tomorrow. Hope it doesn’t already have root rot. Your video was so helpful and I appreciate your sharing it!
Thank you so much! Ive been in the plant hobby for quite some time but my pilea is that one plant which is surviving but not thriving. It seems to have most of these problems so Ill put her to a less sunny spot and will look for a different fertilizer since the one Im using is apparently not sufficient for it
Just found this video. Thank you for the information. Do you also have a video on how to make the banana tea or powder? Would love to try this to help my poor struggling Pilea.
Hi, Thank you so much for watching. Instead of Banana tea, I would recommend using Banana peel powder. just sun dry some banana peels. when they are crisps, crush them into a powder and use as a fertilizer.
Great video - I saw one of your leaves looks like mine. The middle formed a cup + the sides of that leave are curling in towards the main stem. Unfortunately, you didn't mention that problem. Mine started on the top of my plant + is slowing moving down to the healthy leaves. I have searched the web + no one mentions the problem. My plant is 15" tall + would hate to lose it. It has been cared for the exact same way for 2 years.
my pilea has black spots on the underside of the leaves, I'm going to try the recipe for the fungicide you gave but do I swab each leaf that has the black spots?
Thank you so much for thos video! I bought two pilea 18 months ago. Neither of them has grown at all. They get new leaves, and the old leaves fall off, but it hasn't gained any height or width. They are only about 18 inches tall. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!
Hi there, it's sad to know that your Pilea is not doing great. Check all the necessary conditions for the Pilea to grow such as lighting, watering, soil etc.
Thank you for posting this video! I'm struggling with my little pup that was gifted to me. First I was over watering it so I moved it to a terracotta pot, now the leaves are green but cupping. I'll move it to my north facing window and see if it will appreciate that better. It was under grow lights. If this doesn't work out do you think my bathroom is a good place? Right now I have a asparagus fern placed about 3 or 4 feet away from my bathrooms shaded east facing window. Its thriving but would the money plant like that or would it be too humid?
Hi, Yellowing lower leaves on your Chinese money plant could be natural or a sign of nutrient deficiency or lighting issues. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly, place it in bright indirect light, and rotate it regularly. If the top leaves look healthy, your plant is generally doing well.
Yes, you can use a spray fertilizer on your Pilea. Just be sure to apply it in moderation, as over-fertilizing can harm the plant. Spray it on the leaves and soil every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for the best results.
One can actually over water with bottom watering. It is a function of the amount of avaiable amount of water and the amount of time the plant sits in the water.
My piliea dried completely with in 2 days and the leaves became crispy dry. I watered it regularly but still it happened. Was it due to the heat wave? We get full sunlight for 3-4 morning sunlight. But now I see a few new leaves coming out so hoping I get new plants.
Hi Meena, I am not sure whether your Pilea has been exposed to direct sunlight or not. If you think that your Pilea has been sitting in direct sunlight then it could be one of the reasons for crispy dry leaves. Keep your plant in Indirect bright light only. But if lighting is not the issue, Then it could be Potassium deficiency as I mentioned in the video. Potassium deficiency also causes the leaves to turn crispy dry as if they are sun burnt. Frequent watering can drain away the essential nutrients as well. Therefore, it is important to fertilize your plant once monthly during the growing period using a complete liquid fertilizer. As you mentioned that your plant has started showing new growth, which is great, Fertilize it with a very weak dilution of Liquid fertilizer rich in Potassium.
my plant has leaves like on your plant on the top, they look like an umbrella, what does it mean? and some are really curvy, like waves. do you have any recommandations for me? thank you 🙏
Hi Petra, for curvy or umbrella like leaves, check that all plant requirements are being met such as humidity, water, indirect light etc. Nutrient deficiency or over fertilization can also cause leaf problems.
Hi Nancy, Repot you plant when you see the roots of the plant popping out the drainage holes or if you feel the soil has compacted. I have done a video on when to repot the plants. you can find more info in that video. Generally, Pilea doesn't need frequent repotting.
@@Homemakr Thank you. I will check your video out . This plant is giving me 2 very tiny babies. Does this plant grow fast or slow? It seems slow to me. I was watching a video this afternoon about this plant & she brought one plant & made 5 more plants out of it. She also put in at the bottom of the flower pot a coffee filter. What does that do? She also put in a little bit of the old soil & added new soil to it. Thank you for replying back.
My plant is dropping green leaves. I have had it two years and divided it and pulled out pups about six months ago. Most of my leaves drop down and curl. I have cut back on watering about eight weeks ago. Might you have a suggestion? Thank you for your video!
Hi Trena, There could be many other reasons also for leaf dropping other than watering. Make sure that you do not underwater your pilea which can cause leaf curling. Dont forget to check for any pest infestation. Provide enough bright indirect light to your plant and appropriate temperature ( No cold or hot drafts). Make sure that all the essential requirments of the plant at met. Give your plant some time to recover. Still if it does not recover then try repotting it again in fresh sterile soil mix and check for any signs of root rot. Hope your plant gets well soon..👍
I moved my pilea outside to bright shade in humid Georgia in July and started watering them generously every other week. In six weeks they have put out some new leaves on horizontal stems. The older leaves are still drooping but the plants appear to be bouncing back.
Hi, thank you for your video, very helpful. Yesterday I repotting my Pilea, change the soil and give them a vitamin and somehow it turns yellow and bend, it was green and healthy. I am very sad. I tried to put them in bathroom hoping it will make them fresh again, but it didn't work out. I put indoor, no direct sunlight. Can you please tell me how to fix it? Many thanks
Hi Semara, Soon after repotting plants do tend to go into repotting stress and they take some time to adjust to the new soil conditions which can make your plant look sick. but they recover themselves with time. Also, frequently changing the plant's position, lighting, temperature and humidity needs can also cause change stress in the plants because just like humans plants also get used to the place and other conditions and changing their usual spot disrupts the plants routine. Therefore, I think you should let your plant stay at one spot where it receives enough bright indirect light, optimum room temperature and humidity. Do not overwater. Let your plant rest. Give it some time to recover itself. Hope you did not overfertilized your Pilea which could be another reason for its sadness.
Hello I just love you so one question I’ve got a new leaves coming but it’s curl girls know they are a new leaves and I have it in the east window I’ve got the sun in the morning till 11 o’clock and I’m still look at it the new leaves come in they are Kerr what’s the problem let me know please thank you Curling the leaves let me know why please thank you
I think the bright light that the plant is getting is too bright which is why the leaves are curling to avoid moisture loss. May be move your plant a bit away from the window and see if it helps.
Great informative video that possibly addressed all but one problem lol. My Pilea has a few black spots on the leaves, not all leaves just a small few 🤔 There are no bugs and otherwise the plant looks healthy. Any ideas what's happening or what's causing it? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
Hi there, Thank you so much. I am glad the video was helpful to you. Sometimes black spots could be due to fungal or bacterial growth on the leaves which can spread to other leaves too. Try cleaning the leaves with baking soda solution and keep an eye on other leaves getting affected by the existing infected leaves.
Yes you can if you want to. They also call it a friendship plant because you can give those new shoots or "pups" to friends. Start the pups in water until you get roots then plant into soil.
It depends how big your plant is and also depends on the growth of your plant. Pileas are not heavy feeders. Once in a month with a very weak dilution should be good to keep them healthy.
It is a solution that is made out of seaweed. It is readily available in any plant store or you can order one online. Dilute the same as per the instructions on the bottle and administer.
It has been 3days that i hade received my pilea through online. One of its leaves is curling like a cup and some of them are slight curved. I had placed beside it the direct sunlight. Could you please tell me whether it is normal or should I be attentive about it?
Hi Mounika, Direct sun exposure can cause light and heat stress and thatswhy the plant leaves are curling up to avoid the same. Therefore, provide your pilea with bright indirect light instead of direct light.
Root rot is more common and not as lethal as potrayed in the video. Remember to dig out and replace as much soil as you can around the roots before putting it into a new pot if you see rotted roots, then you will be alright. Don't be too careful taking care of them. Plants you treat like babies end up being weak.
I am sorry but I don't agree with this. Root Rot is not common if the plant has been taken care of properly. Taking care doesn't mean watering and fertilizing. Not overwatering or overfertilizing also comes in proper care. Some plants need more care than others like calatheas whereas some plants survive better on less maintenance like snake plants or ZZ plants. If root rot is identified at an early stage then it can be saved. But if it's not, then it can kill your plant.
Wrong, root rot can be lethal to a plant of not taken care at the early stages. Also, you will need to cut the roots that are rotten when repoting, otherwise you're not doing any good to the plant, and it will soon die. I baby my plants and they thrive.
Very good video but I don’t think you talked about leaves that curl backwards to make a domed shape. I always check the soil before I water so I don’t think it’s over or under watered. I’ve also tried lower and higher amounts of light but the problem continues and seems to be getting worse. I fertilize about once a month with miracle gro all purpose plant food. The babies used to have perfectly flat leaves and now they’re curling too. Any ideas?
Hi Lisa, I would suggest you to check the humidity in the room where you have your Pilea. Temperature changes can also cause the leaves to curl. In too hot conditions, the leaves will curl to avoid water loss whereas, in too cold temperatures also the leaves curl. make sure you check the temperature and humidity as well.
@@Homemakr Thanks so much for your reply! Unfortunately, I think the mystery continues because the temperature is very consistently 76 degrees Fahrenheit all around my house and with the air conditioning running all day the humidity is probably around 50%. I think I’ll try a 10-10-10 fertilizer and see if that helps.
Most of gardeners are saying to use non drainage hole pot. But I just planted it in self watering hanging basket. Very very confuse about watering and light. Would I need to water daily or after drying out the soil. How to care in winter?
Hi Reshmi Paul, Do not over water you Pilea otherwise you will kill it. Always check the soil by sticking your finger inthe soil to check the moisture. If the top half soil feels dry then water your plant.
Avoid fertilizing in winters and Autumn as the plant growth reduces. But if you think your Pilea is still showing good amount growth then continue fertilising.
If your Pilea plant is tall and falling over, there are a few things you can do to help it stand upright: Staking: You can use a stake or bamboo pole to support the plant and help it stand upright. Gently tie the stem to the stake with soft string or plant ties, taking care not to damage the stem or leaves. Repotting: If the plant is top-heavy, it may be a sign that it needs a larger pot. Repotting the plant in a larger container with fresh soil can help support the plant and promote healthy growth. Pruning: If the plant has become too tall and leggy, you can prune it back to encourage bushier growth. Cut back the stem to just above a leaf node, taking care not to remove too much of the plant at once. Adjusting light: If the plant is reaching a light source, you may need to adjust the position of the plant or the light source to encourage more even growth. Watering: Make sure you are watering your Pilea plant correctly. Overwatering or underwatering can cause the plant to weaken and become more prone to falling over. With proper care and attention, your Pilea plant should recover and continue to thrive.
Check the plant for any pest infestation thoroughly. If you find any, then use a pesticide to get rid of the pests. You can also repot your plant to check for any signs of root rot.
@Ellyn Deng, Hi, Brown spots/Rusted spots could be caused by fungal or bacterial infection which could be due to overwatering/ wet soil for long time, Poor air circulation in the room, Poor lighting and too humid and warm conditions. I am not sure out of all these factors which one applies to your Pilea. Try removing all these factors by providing your plant bright indirect light for at least 5-6 hours daily, Do not Overwater, Make sure the air circulation in the room is good. To remove Brown spots, you can try fungicide from the shop or Neem oil solution or Hydrogen Peroxide solution ( 1 tsp of hydrogen peroxide in 250 ml of water) or Baking soda solution (2 tsp of baking soda + 1tsp of any Oil+ 10-15 drops of dishwash or handwash liquid in 1 litre of water). Remember to patch test on a leaf first before using on the whole plant. Your plant will recover soon. 🙂
Hi, thank you for these tips. I have been searching for solution to control insects on my pilea. It's like green little flies but they don't fly. Just staying around the young leafs and causing the leaf become curly shape, uneven and rough, and dry at the edge. I have my plant for years now but stuck in her growing. I'm so stressed out about it as l feel I'm failing her. Feeling sorry anytime l look at her. Would you please help me? I want to spray it with insect control but pilea doesn't like water on the leaf. Is it true? Thank you so much for your time and care. Much love, from down under. 🌻🌼🌺💛
Hi there, I am so sorry to hear about your Pilea. To get rid of any houseplant pests, neem oil solution is the best. You can buy one from any plant store. Make the solution as mentioned on the bottle and spray each and every part of your plant. Continue doing this until you see no pests infestation on your plant. You can also use hydrogen peroxide solution or baking soda solution. I have made a separate video on both. Your plant will recover soon. 👍🙂
@@Homemakr It was happened to my plant once, even lost all the Leafs, and I use hydrogen peroxide solution to clear it up put a side doing nothing for two months, after that the plant regrow totally.
Hello! Your video is so helpful but I have one question.. I got a pilea last week and now the bottom leaves are turning yellow.. I am sure that I haven't over watered it cause I've only watered the day I putted it in the new pot..and I have a lot of indoor plants and Ive learned how to water the properly in the way you too describe it..all of the leaves are looking down and turning yellow and even the new ones that were growing turned a bit black on the edge.. Is it because it doesn't get enough light? I have it on my desk at about 2 meters distance from the window.. And because I wasn't sure about the light everyday I moved her close to the window and then at night back at my desk.. Maybe that's what hurt her? I am so sad when my plants are looking sick and not well...
@Argyro Pip, Thank you. I am glad that the video was helpful to you. Sometimes, soon after repotting the plant goes into change stress. Because just like humans, plants also get used to the environment, soil, light and other conditions and it is very common for plant leaves to droop down or show no growth or turn yellow soon after repotting. It takes time for the plant and its roots to adjust to the new soil conditions. Once it gets settled in new environment, you will see your plant recovering. Provide your plant Filtered light which is not too strong and don't fertilize till you see the plant recovering (also you just repotted so no need to fertilize early). Moving plant position frequently will keep plant in stress which will affect its growth. Give it some time. Hopefully, your plant should recover soon.
@@Homemakr thank you so muchhh ! So you recommend to leave it in the first place, on my desk or closer to the window? In my window there is never straight sun, there is only natural light
@Neha Thapa, Your plant soil must be deficient of Nitrogen. Feed your pilea with complete liquid fertilizer or seaweed solution once monthly during Spring and summer season.

@@Homemakr Ahhh I see, thank you so much! I'll move them back in the same spot as before and thank you for replying my message
@semara rasmaranti Your most Welcome.
@@Homemakr will try that! Thank you so much 😀
Don't water the Leafs, keep them dry.
I just purchased a Pilea from a nursery and it has about 3 plants in one pot. Should I separate and repot them in a smaller pot?
Yes you can if you want to. They also call it a friendship plant because you can give those new shoots or "pups" to friends. Start the pups in water until you get roots then plant into soil.
how often to fertilizee during the summer months?
It depends how big your plant is and also depends on the growth of your plant. Pileas are not heavy feeders. Once in a month with a very weak dilution should be good to keep them healthy.
I’ve had to take it apart and start fresh with the stem in water. Is this a mistake ? How do you replant ?
Hi, Placing it in fresh water is not a mistake. I have made a repotting video as well. ua-cam.com/video/age0y72RVbY/v-deo.html
What’s the seaweed solution? 👀 I don’t want to use the banana peel solution because I have fungus gnats 😔
It is a solution that is made out of seaweed. It is readily available in any plant store or you can order one online. Dilute the same as per the instructions on the bottle and administer.
Hello I transplant my plant in a little bit bigger so I’m not transplant plant it again and it’s look good I hope so is it OK
It should be fine..👍
My pilea has a lot of scars on many of its old leaves, including one new one. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
It has been 3days that i hade received my pilea through online. One of its leaves is curling like a cup and some of them are slight curved. I had placed beside it the direct sunlight. Could you please tell me whether it is normal or should I be attentive about it?
Hi Mounika, Direct sun exposure can cause light and heat stress and thatswhy the plant leaves are curling up to avoid the same. Therefore, provide your pilea with bright indirect light instead of direct light.
Thank you!!! ❤
Any time!
@@lisadawson5852 Let me know if you find a solution, mine does the same thing!!! I have tried everything
I´m having the same problem...
Same problem.. when I water, it doesn’t go away either.
For winter care, ease check out my video on how to care for plants in winters. Thank you so much for watching.
Thankyou,is this the same as hydrocotyle?
Hi, Pilea is not the same as Hydrocotyle ( Water Pennyworts).
@@Homemakr ok,is it Brahmi
Can we fertilize in autumn/winter??
Avoid fertilizing in winters and Autumn as the plant growth reduces. But if you think your Pilea is still showing good amount growth then continue fertilising.
My pilea has pups but it’s very dull, brown not like in video. Looks very sad 😔 please help me
Will it survive in an office environment with no natural light?
Hi, my problem is that my plant is to tall and is falling down. Should I cut it?
If your Pilea plant is tall and falling over, there are a few things you can do to help it stand upright:
Staking: You can use a stake or bamboo pole to support the plant and help it stand upright.
With proper care and attention, your Pilea plant should recover and continue to thrive.
hey , mi pilea is suffering with holes in the leaves & they are falling out ,what can i do 😢
Check the plant for any pest infestation thoroughly. If you find any, then use a pesticide to get rid of the pests. You can also repot your plant to check for any signs of root rot.
My plant the bark is not strong. It doesn't grow upright. Please advise
You can provide support to your plant by placing a sturdy stick. Hope it helps.
Leaves have many rusted spots
Could you please tell me what happen of my leaves
@@Homemakr thanks so much I will try fungicide
Sounds like aphids to me.
My money plant will only grow leaves at the top of the bare stalk and is really top heavy as a result. Anyone know what's going wrong?
In my window there is never straight sun, there is only natural light
poor plant got all the problems and issues :(
I hope it gets recover very soon
Thank you..🙂
Excellent sharing dear friends thanks very useful information thanks stay connected New subscriber friends thanks good night 😊
Thank you
My pilea light green and not dark green why?
@Neha Thapa, Your plant soil must be deficient of Nitrogen. Feed your pilea with complete liquid fertilizer or seaweed solution once monthly during Spring and summer season.
add some coffee once a month, my plant's Leafs are all flat, green and thick, never have one leaf is yellow.
Thats great, Thanks for sharing this information. 🙏🙂
I have a small peperomioide and it is not growing at all. Not given even one leaf
are money plants lucky?
Yes, Many people consider Chinese Money plant as a lucky plant.
I killed my 2 babies 😭
