Pilea peperomioides Care & Propagation - Plant One On Me - Ep 088

  • The Pilea peperomioides, otherwise known as "Chinese Money Plant", "UFO Plant" and "Friendship Plant", was a bear to try to get here in the states for quite some time, but now the supply is up, the prices are lower, and I think that signals a good reason to do a care and propagation video (since probably more of us-at least in the states-have access to this plant).
This video was graciously brought to you by Espoma as well, and some of the products are featured below:
    Products:
    - Pilea peperomioides 4" plant: amzn.to/2DWy0KL
    - Pilea peperomioides 2" plant: amzn.to/2P9ntNx
    - Espoma potting mix: amzn.to/2O539Rd
    - Espoma perlite: amzn.to/2PaLaVR
    - Espoma biotone: amzn.to/2P6MWHj
    - Espoma organic indoor plant food: amzn.to/2DZcZzk

These plants always loose lower leaves for some reason. But the yellow could mean that it needs a bit more nitrogen in the fertilizer you're using.

hey summer! love your videos. I wanted to share a tip from my gardening community. ive been fertilizing my plants with menses (my own of course), Ive been wearing a diva cup for about a year now and have saved my menses to store in a hermetic jar, and throughout the spring I feed it to my plants. It's incredibly empowering! I use a 1:9 ratio and 1:4 for cacti/succulents.

I have one of these that I would like to repot. I wondered if I should deepen the main stem at the bottom since several of the bottom leaves have died, or is this a no, no? I know with African violets, one should do this, even scraping the outer surface of the stalk, to give an uncalloused area for the new roots to develop. What are your thoughts on this?

I left for six months for work and someone was taking "care" of my plants but now that I'm back most of them are dead or agonizing, including my pilea. She was so robust and perfectly round and now is just a long big stem with 5 leaves at the top. I was thinking of cutting that final top part of the stem and root it on water, but then I wondered what should I do with the remaining stem? can I propagate it on soil? (I've seen you can do that with some plants, like dumb canes). I can't find anything online since the traditional way of propagation is by repotting the babies or by a stem that already has leaves. SOS!! :(

We call them elephant-ears in Sweden. And I like to put my small ”babies” that I’ve propagated, into small glasses of water for a couple of weeks for them to grow white roots and that way I feel like they have a higher chance of surviving 🌱

I first came across this plant 30 years ago. A friend had a huge specimen in her window that was decades old. I felt in love with it straight away. Unlike any house plant I'd ever seen before. She harvested so many shoots for friends that in the end it gave up the ghost. It then took me many years to find another one because until recently they were rare in the UK too. We called it the Lollipop Plant because none of us knew what it was. Until one day I spotted it growing as shade ground cover in one of Royal Kew Gardens' glass houses. The RHS expert there identified it for me.

My daughter gave me her Chinese money plant that had been struggling in a hard packed potting mix. This video was very helpful in getting this little cutie healthy again. Thank you!

cynthia - Interesting! In the United States, “elephant ear” is a treat you can buy at carnivals and fairs. It’s a kind of fried pancake.

And to make it even more confusing, elephant’s ear in German refers to alocasias. Very interesting how different languages come up with the same associations for very different plants.
