  • Who was the Timelord President we see in the Doctor Who series? Well Rassilon is old, even for a Timelord and among the myriad of titles and honorifics is the story of the rise to power of the greatest Gallifreyan mind and the downfall of a despot.
This is a more in-depth analysis of the character from various sources including books, audio and as well as the TV sources. The continuity may be spread all over the place but a solid image of the character still emerges.

i and many others refuse to accept anything after capaldi as canon. chibnal crapped on 50+ years of history. whats worse is they ( whoever is in charge of approving scripts and stories ) allowed his travesties to be put on film. i hoping that SOMEONE over there will come to their senses and erase all his nonsense. hell, at this point i'd welcome moffat back even though his writings were often pointlessly convoluted and nonsensical.

There is another major event in Rassilon's life that is often overlooked, which is told in the Eighth Doctor Audio Adventures. During the earlier days in which time travel was being developed, and regeneration was being developed, Rassilon foresaw a future in which an alien race would eventually surpass the Time Lords in their technology, and take control. Refusing to accept this, he released a virus, similar to that which gave the Time Lords regeneration, but repurposed it so that all life would eventually evolve into the Gallifreyan norm. Anything that didn't evolve to this state was sealed within a universe of looped time. Within this pocket of reality, time didn't function on a linear cycle, existing as a loop, which would start with life emerging, and then being culled some twenty to thirty thousand years, before restarting. He then tried to use the Doctor to create a weapon made from "Anti-Time" to finish off the divergent universe once and for all, creating the monster of Gallifreyan myth, Zagreus. This failed, however, as Zagreus was convinced by the Doctor to not side with Rassilon, and throw him into the Divergent universe to face his enemies directly.
It is safe to assume that this is canon, as it was the Divergent World of Bortesoye where the Doctor befriended a Eutermesan named C'rizz, who he names when he is about to drink the Elixir of Life in Night of the Doctor.

The First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan in the novelisation of "The Daleks" are all noticeably different from the characters in the TV serial. No reason to suppose those characters the Eighth Doctor talked about couldn't be TV counterparts rather than the exact same ones from the audios. @Riftsrunner 7 років тому +19

peccatumDei Yes, they were trying to intimate that the Doctor was the third of a triumvirate with Rassilon and Omega called The Other. I believe he collaborated with them to create the Time Lords we know today. From the various sources I could find, he was supposed to be a Time Lord from a few millennia after the Time Lord's creation, but he knew he was instrumental in bringing them about. So he used a his Time Travel capsule (ie. a TARDIS) to travel back in time to try to change the attitudes of the Time Lords in his time. He attracts Rassilon's attention by showing a seal given to him from a later incarnation of Rassilon. He worked with Rassilon and Omega to created the technology they would use as Time Lords (regeneration, TARDIS's, and the Hand of Omega) The Other tried to convince him to change the direction the Time Lords would eventually follow. Rassilon, however, upon hearing this information decides to instead become more despotic because of the power the Time Lords in the future have. But paranoia took hold and he decided that Omega would be a political rival, so he sabotaged his ship to send him into the black hole. He also saw The Other as a potential rival and turn the Gallifreyian people on him to hunt him down and attempt to get the future technology he had. While trying to flee, he became trapped in the loom rooms, and his only option was to throw himself into them with the hope he would be recombined some time in the future. Rassilon became infuriated at this loss and decreed that all mention of The Other's real identity would be wiped from the history of Gallifrey. Eventually, The Other was recombined and took the name of the Doctor. The problem was that his memories were buried and it took his first six regenerations to trigger them into his awareness. This was to be expanded upon, but they cancelled the show before they could flesh it out much further.

The Guardians were arguably the worst creation of Classic Who, and that entire "Key to Time" season was utter garbage. Only the Robert Holmes (Vengeance of Kroll I think?) story was decent at best. It is never explained what the key is, who the guardians are and how they have the powers of basically gods, why it is so important that they get the key, etc.
However, JNT did help to give the Guardians some respect, as the character of Turlough and his story arc was brilliant. Enlightenment is definitely in the top 20-30 stories ever, if not top 10. Even then though, there's only so much that can be helped, as the Guardians by their nature are Gods, and God is a very weak character because he's completely one-dimensional and has no flaws or challenges. There's nothing interesting about a character that's perfect all the time, and it makes no sense why the Black Guardian even needs Turlough or the Key. If he's so powerful, why can't he just do what he wants to do himself?

Wow, thank you for this video. I love when the wiser Dr. Who fans are able to put together clear and informative Who history for us relative newer fans (especially us in the States) that never had the benefits of learning backstory as it unfolded. I did watch some Dr. Who as a kid but unfortunately most of it was on my local public broadcast network and almost always out of season order. One week it could be Peter Davison then Jon Pertwee the next then over to McCoy. I couldn't coherently watch in proper order till the return of Who with Eccleston. Please keep these vids going.👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍😆😆😆😆😆

The regeneration was not exclusive to just the time lords, it was a virus. Many died, but many survived and their children carried the regeneration. The thing that eventually separated the time lords and the normal Gallifreyans was the use of looming over natural birth and Rassilon's limiting the Timelord spots only to the loomers. Otherwise, there really was no difference

Time Lords aren't just your run-of-the-mill advanced aliens. They're literally bound into the Time Vortex surrounding the Multiverse. That's why the Doctor can literally feel time and changes in time that happened. Thanks to this, effects on time such as slowing time down or reversing it will not affect Time Lords and they can just walk through time barriers. Time loops also have no effect, as shown in The Lodger.
Time Lords thus essentially have unnatural precognition abilities in relation to time across the Multiverse and can remember timelines that never existed. Time Lords make physics around them more rational by being present, which is why they could stomp out magic from the Multiverse and kill off gods with ease.
There's more, but one of their best abilities is forced-regeneration, which can alter themselves into eldritch abominations. In Sky Pirates!, the Charon tries to kill the Doctor by blasting him witgh the energy of stars, and the Doctor's Time Lord DNA morphs him into a multi-dimensional monster big enough to crush the star the Charon resided in.

Really we haven't spent enough time with them, during Bakers run there were several long stories taking place on Gallifrey that allowed you to get to know individuals but before and after they only really appeared as deus ex machina.
One great potential, the Meddling Monk marooned on Earth during the middle ages, would be great if we saw him again he was the proto-master character but a lot more mischievous rather than pure evil.

    • @vullord666
      @vullord666 4 роки тому +6

Honestly that feels like a problem of new who as a whole. It favors humans and earth too much. That is to say when is the last time we got a non human companion (that actually traveled with the doctor in the tardis) or one from another time period. They really aren’t giving us that much time on another planet (no more than 1-2 episodes) or with non humans to get to know and develop their characters (on the level we see for companions). At this point Gallifrey is just a joke (well more accurately a plot device). At this point it has been destroyed in order to revive doctor who, brought back to give him more regenerations, somehow ended up at the end of the universe and out of the pocket dimension is was trapped in, and destroyed again because “series 11 was weak and we need to bring fans back” basically. Timelords aren’t going to get a chance to be like able as long as new who keeps treating Gallifrey like this.

Only Time Lords. Though the origins of the difference between a typical Galifreyan and a Time Lord are in dispute. All the crap about "Looms" comes from a series of books that virtually everybody who has run the show since do not prescribe to. Thankfully, in my opinion as I think it's a rather bad and limiting story.

I think canon-wise they are going with exposure to the Time-Vortex as the source of the Time-Lord's regeneration. Apparently a fissure to the Time-Vortex is a natural phenomena on Gallifrey. In the show, you need exposure to the energies of the Time-Vortex to read the circular language of the Gallifreyians. And exposure to the Time-Vortex is how a human (River Song) gained regeneration.

Just a quick note on one or two suppressed myths & rumours about Rassilon. One is that he may also have been infected/bitten by a Great Vampire in the Great Vampire War; so given events like his rumoured orchestration of Omega's exile into the anti matter universe, he may not have been working entirely in Gallifrey's favour towards the end. Certainly he was ruthless & very much ruled by ego. Additionally you didn't mention the Other. The other is a significant figure given it's mysterious nature, but though most historical records relating to him were destroyed, their remains some statues in the Panopticon that depict Rassilon, Omega & the Other as a Triumvirate of powerful figures. - The Other is said to have advised or counciled Rassilon so he may play an important roll in Rassilon's formation of Timelord Society. Also there's a whole series of stories that actually feature Rassilon in the Big Finish 8th Doctor Audio dramas, & there's Rassilon's Foundry, from the Gallifrey Spin off, that shows that he was a xenophobic piece of work in the extreme

I had always wondered if Rassilon was The Master's father as The Master once described the fields of his father's land when he and The Doctor played together as boys and in the episode of The End Of Time, The Master looked so hurt when Rassilon described him " As a disease " and not to mention the amount of anger The Master had against Rassilon, when he accused Rassilon of " Doing this " to him---his entire life---in maybe to the reference to the never-ending beating of the drums in his head that never allowed him to have any kind of silent peace, which means that Rassilon had used his own son as a pawn and a tool in his own evil masterplan.
