Karelia - Kalitki: a popular Russian snack | What's cookin'
Вставка

- Karelia lies in the North of Europe, it is partly Finnish but mainly belongs to Russia. Languages and customs that were banned under Soviet rule are slowly returning, like Karelian dishes such as Kalitki or Kalakukko. Roman Leontjew is a potter. The father of three makes the ceramic pots, in which traditional dishes are roast in the wood-fired oven for hours on snowy afternoons.
What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

This video made me want to become a potter :-) I really enjoyed watching it. So far, the videos I watched on this series all portray people who are creative, makers and holding to a traditional way of life. I suppose this was not by chance, but it is truly refreshing seeing people making things, creating art, cooking together as a family and living a life that is not spoiled by outside influences and a mindless use of technology.
Make sure you keep quiet about it. Here in Hawaii way back someone started it here. Talk to much about it open store etc. then ton of people started doing that. That a old fad here . So many artist Vera ration of it. White and blur aqua., burn wood with it. Etc but 1 or 2 do it at fair but nobody buy it.
Even the artist work same thing, nobody buys it anymore. New age.
So little cute children😘😘
And I really love the way grandfather love his granddaughter just like mine grandpa😌😌😌❤️
Its Karjalanpiirakka and it was invented in the Finnish Karelia and was made in eastern Finland and karelia for hundreds of years before it became popular.
Wow! Its a beautiful place with wonderful food. Loved the fish and berries cooked into amazing food. Nice sauna!
One of the best series I have ever seen on u tube..so relaxing...
Very enjoyable shows. Not just for the cooking but for the insights they provide about the many different cultures.
For those who don't know, when he was beating her with the leaves it's something you do in Sauna tradition. Guess it's something all Nordic countries like Karelia do.
No not all the nordic countries only Finland & Russia
I love its very relaxing especially during winter or cold days when you get to dive into cold water. I know it as a Finnish tradition
Karelian pasties are Finnish! Not Russian. There's Finnish Karelia and Russian Karelia. Karelia in Finland is split in two provinces: North Karelia and South Karelia. Russian Karelia is a separate Federal subject known as Republic of Karelia. Russian Karelia is partly in Leningrad Oblast, too.
Karelian pasties (also known as piirakka, kalitta or šipainiekku and to Finns as karjalanpiirakka) are Karelian not Finnish!

This has been a real eye-opener to a wonderful culture.
100% Finnish Karelian, Karjalanpiirakka 🇫🇮
this food is called Karjalan Piirakkaa. It is Finnish
valhoundmom so, we live not in Karelia but we still cooking kalitki, this is very popular in all north of Russia, according you finnish use russian cooking.
nadezda nadezdovna other way round. Even you head of state is an Ingrian Finn by ancestry. Finland is the older culture. "Russian" refers to who came later, but of course people who have been in an area forever are who they are and have their ow. Name for themselves and their land. Modern "Russia" has demonstrated little respect for the land earth or any living on it. But "Modern Russia" is a political entity made of many peoples.
@@valhoundmom And the name Russ in Russia came from Swedish wikings who started to settle the land and take slaves from the midle of Russia by rivers. I would say that Karelia had there own region and culture before any country lay claim on the region.
They are delicious I had them in Finland
@@MrNissetuta that's great and I'm sure those Swedish vikings encountered the various people already there such as the Mari, Khanty...and other Uralic/ Altaic people who were there for thousands of years before " vikings" ( viking age was 800ad to 1100ad.) Karelia was Karelia long before the "Rus" arrived, just as Ingrians to the South.
I keep saying to myself, “This is modern; this is now.” How nice to see life lived like this...in 2020!!! Wow!
What a beautiful story! The photography was so wonderful and very professionally done. It was awesome to see how our Karelia Russian friends live and how important it is to teaches the cultural heritage and customs to their younger ones. The children are so precious and beautiful. I loved how the families all worked together so well. I was so impressed! I am from Clarksville, Indiana USA. This is located on the Ohio River and the little town we live in was named for the explorers, Lewis & Clark, who mapped out the country many years ago. It was one of the settlements they left behind as they journeyed to discover the wilderness of America. I have to say the food looked great and I could imagine how good it tasted. Sadly, we have not these recipes here in the USA. I would try them if we did! I also loved the ideas using fermented recipes since these are so good for you. We also make our own sourdough bread here and it is so delicious. And even though a great distance is between us, I felt as if I was right there with you all from watching your excellent video. God Bless you all in Karelia!

Are these lead free clay pots and can they be used on stove top as well? Where can I buy this, or how do I find the potter Roman Leontjew or one who make the same quality?

Karelia would have been several times more prosperous if it belonged to Finland, just saying. It's a shame russia keeps grabbing land from it's neighboring countries but can't make them prosperous enough to equal those of the western European standard of prosperity. Having russia as a neighboring country is almost like a curse, you wouldn't know when it's going to activate it's predatory mode. 🤔 ✌️

All that great food then they have ruin it with margarine.
That doesnt really matter if the quality of the other ingrediences are excelent
Welll, perhaps it is cost prohibitive there. Decisions must be made. The best quality of the main ingredients will not falter under a little margarine. Perhaps it is not available at all times of the year.
@@vioricalucheniuc260 No vegetable oils are seriously the worst thing you can eat in the food world. Literally toxic.
@@trashukun3787 you must be joking mate. Men have consumed olive oil long before Christ was born. it's the modern processing like hydrogenation that makes it bad for our health
@@gigizack omg you dunce, I'm talking about seed oils. FRESH olive oil is traditionally cold pressed and used within a short amount of time, so it can't oxidize and has a short shelf life which is fine when it's being consumed locally. 99% of olive oil is still trash because people don't care about quality and it's sitting in plastic, unpainted bottles with direct light on it, making it a essentially rancid, unless you live near where it's made you shouldn't eat it either. I'm obviously not talking about that. Even avocado oil is fine.
But every seed oil and margarine type product, sunflower oil, canola, peanut, rapeseed etc that's extremely toxic to humans. Plant fats are trash.
