  • This episode gets up close and personal as we follow young farmer Johannes Bauer find his sheep in the 3000m high mountains - the exciting and risky work of an Alpine mountain farmer. Bringing the sheep into the valley after the summer pasteur is a celebrated event in the Austrian village of Göriach and marks the start of autumn. The region is in the Eastern Alps with deep valleys and crystal clear lakes. Johannes and his wife Christina live on the farm that has been in the family for 500 years. In autumn, the traditional dish of „Schöpserne“, roast lamb, is made with fresh horseradish and wild cranberries picked in the nearby mountain forest.
    What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

    The narrator voice should be higher than the background noises. Other than that, these documentaries are absolutely amazing to watch! It's good to see families enjoying nature and sharing their cultures.

    I had never seen mountains before, and one summer I was invited to play in the Grand Teton music festival. My parents and oldest sister had passed away the year before. I drove all the way there from Tx, and when the mountains and valley burst into view, I too burst into tears. I moved out west, the mountains are special..the dry air, the winter snows..not too excited about earthquakes, but, every location has its issues.

    Farming is not an easy task. That's why I try to eat only a portion of food that I need and save the rest. To provide food for the family is a very decent way of living. I admire those people in the farm and respect them. Food here in Florida are expensive.

    Fascinating that the family values cranberries and potatoes so much. Just about the time when the family started the farm 500 years ago, is when this berry and tuber first came to Europe from the Americas half a millennia ago. I wonder if it's a coincidence? They are both hardy and can grow in poor soil in such a mountainous region as they live in. They of course could have got by with just the cattle and the sheep and other veggies to sell. It's just a thought. 🤫

    I am loving all of these! In spite of the lousy audio on some of them. Just brings it home to you how close we are, if we did but know it. And how much we have lost. But it is always has to be spoiled by Yanks going 'That isn't corn! Those aren't cranberries' or whatever. As usual, considering European nations, and places further afield (like Egypt in the case of corn) have used these words for centuries before they even existed, you would think that they would realise that their ancestors 'borrowed' them and applied them to the new crops and fruit they encountered. But nope! Lol

    I absolutely love this channel. Perhaps the ONLY criticism I have is that the background music and the narration switch places - the narration goes to background and music comes to foreground - so that it makes it difficult to hear the narrator on some of the episodes. They sort of need a bit of editing to fix this and they will be perfection. Thank you!

    • @agp11001
      @agp11001 4 роки тому +1

      Well, I can't speak for them being dull since my great-grandmother and grandmother were - and mother still is - cutting with razor-sharp knives, but especially in oldschool farming families knives are often multi-purpose knives because back in the days they were quite a luxury item. They still go by the 'better one really good knife for everything instead of ten knives for x jobs' mindset.
      I have a knife that has been handed down for a few generations now, it started out as what you'd call a chef knife but has been sharpened so often I can use it to fillet fish nowadays.
