Before the Temptations, Before the Ojays, there was the Dixie Hummingbirds. They and others like them paved the way, and set the trail. I remember seeing them do Didn't It Rain at King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit in the mid sixties. They had that church rocking. In the audience was a guy name Melvin Franklyn.
Amidst all that great harmony and showmanship of the rest of the group...Howard Carroll STILL manages to shine..as he calmly and coolly looks down at the rest of the boys doing their thing... he is working that guitar out lol...He was THE BEST!!!!!!
What music. And what history. At 1:10 the Birds #2 lead singer, James Walker, talks about how the day after the assassination of President Kennedy (Nov 23 1963), he tweaked the lyric of Prayer for Peace record this horrific event. Then at 1:40 follows a clip from a great performance (the Jamaica one?) of the song with his new Kennedy verse.
Perfection.
