I guess we are being replaced they say in the news, if you can believe their lies. All I know is what I see. Everyone around here who are new to my area drive brand new expensive vehicles when they arrive and seem to have plenty of money, jobs & most have new borns. I live in Asheville, NC. This storm has affected us and the surrounding communities like nothing ever has. It is simply devastating to see this destruction, everywhere you go. We didn’t have power for 16 days. One of my coworkers just got power after 22 days. People in Asheville still don’t have water, or if they do have it, it’s not drinkable. Our beautiful trails have been demolished. Areas look like someone took a lawnmower and mowed all the trees down. I work at one of the hospitals in the area, and the stories of survival from the patients there are amazing. There are also many stories of those who were not so fortunate. The loss our area has had just brings me to tears.
Your fellow North Carolinians will be there to spend money in the reopened stores as soon as they're opened back up. I pray you, your family and friends will find solace in knowing you guys aren't alone in this.
They discovered Lithium mines under the Apalachin mountains and there clearing out those who won't leave by natural disasters. I feel bad for those who have lost everything including loved ones. I went to help this family yesterday. I don’t even realize they were on 60 min. They got denied FEMA help. So where is all the money going they say they’ve given out if people like this aren’t getting it? The only people there helping were people like you and me. Some from FL. Some from TN. We say maybe 15 military NG riding around watching and doing nothing. The locals said they don’t even talk to them. So the truth is the truth.

My mother, grandmother, great and great great grandmother's and father's are from these mountains and I couldn't be more proud. I am so sad to see them devastated. These communities are filled with people who are the most genuine kind and hard working individuals you could ever meet. Thank you for helping them!
My beautiful Mama is resting in those North Carolina mountains. My heart is hurting so much for everyone hurt by this horrible storm. I am thankful for all the wonderful memories I have of growing up visiting my kin in the amazing Smokies. I am praying for recovery of all survivors and missing. 😢
My entire family - both sides - is from/ still live in Green Mountain. Pigeon Roost and Bailey Settlement are the next two communities along the Toe River past Relief. My blood runs deep in those hills even though I reside inn Charlotte. Best people you could ever meet. Heartbroken.
I was flooded out here in NE Tennessee…all furniture lost plus priceless (to us) family pics and heirlooms. After 9 nights in a hotel room and now having been completely relocated, my family and I agree that even with all of the loss we were lucky. Other families in Western NC and NE TN lost loved ones on top of everything they owned. It’s been a terrible situation. The whole Appalachian area has been hit harder than any other time during my life… but THE COMMUNITIES have brought us all together and we will rebuild and restart our lives in this beautiful area we all call home. Prayers to everyone!!!

@@sarita5572 All they need to do is get a lot of cold air in the middle. hot water makes them faster, if you cause cold its almost like it causes drag and it causes them to turn inwards. The original method was dropping dry ice out of an airplane. Coincidentally 10 years after the government did that experiment they invented the WC130 that ominously matches the mission. I'm sure it's not the only advancement they made in their efforts, not sure HOW accurate they can spin it but with the level of technology these days I guess anything is possible. I live in Balsam. We lost power for 6 days. At first I was angry and wanted my power restored but then I started hearing stories about my surrounding areas and completely changed my attitude. I’m still mad at myself about feeling that way. I’m grateful that loosing power was the only thing to happen. I’m praying for everyone in WNC. We are family and we are strong!

I live here, and the storm was devastating, but our mountain community is strong and resilient. The outpouring of help has been tremendous. We work together, and we will come back stronger. 60 Minutes presented an excellent piece. Thank you to volunteers, linemen, military personnel, FEMA, Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, Public Safety, neighbors, strangers, family, and friends, and all who have tirelessly jumped in without question and given their unconditional time and efforts to help. Thank you all for your help, compassion, prayers, and everything else in between.
My son has taken off work and been up there twice. I crochet beanie caps on my circular machine and have sent over 100 hats up there. We live in the piedmont and only an hour from where the damage started. I am so very sorry. We will not forget and our churches are still collecting and bringing things. You are not alone in this. We won't stop until there are no more needs. Sending all of you hugs and love.

That was awful, all four of them were lost, the mom, mom's fiance, and the two little ones. He was the manager of a store in my town, I feel so sad every time I drive past it now.
@bubbercakes528 Honey God was right there by each of our sides. He never did this He allowed it to happen but He was there through it all with us. This only made us love God more. I personally feel I've grown closer to God through this. There is alot of loss but oh my there is way more gained. gained. I'm sorry you can't understand but you could if you could know Christ and then understand why things happen. No child of God should ever be angry over something like this. Having visited this area quite often (I'm from upstate S.C) and working in the Blue Ridge foothills during the summer; I experienced the "magic" of those mountains. I will always be aware and in awe of the resilience, grit, determination, hope, and faith of the people of Appalachia and Western N.C.. True Americans.

Helene was poised directly over my horse farm in Georgia, and shifted at the last minute, how it gained such power and hit North Carolina like it did when it should have been dying out is beyond me. My heart goes out! I did not sleep that night and had my boots on for what that was worth. Mother Nature is stronger than all of us combined.

I'm a Western N.C. resident. About 35min from Asheville on the NC/TN border, Mitchell County N.C. Houses, landmarks, and entire mountain sides are just gone. The devastation is just indescribable. I have a 6 month old son and it makes me so sad to know that the world I grew up in isn't one that he will ever know. It is gone. Was turned down for the $750 FEMA check. Apparently, I'm not eligible. Even though we lost much of our belongings and had to move homes. WE- as in the community, are helping one another. It's certainly NOT coming from the government. 😢

As a teacher I was able to live in Asheville this past summer and was surprised to see TONS of people living outside. Not just homeless, its a hiking area for people doing the Appalachian Trail and groups of college kids. The number of dead is most likely a lot higher, it was a special place.
There's been recovery folks telling about what was homeless encampments where hundreds were lost, some only body parts found in trees, hillsides, flood embankments. They remarked many are still buried under the sentiments and silt and will take years to recover them all. Overwhelming.
We are in the rural Blue Ridge mountains of western Virginia. I remember hurricane Camille in 1969. We had two feet of rainwater (in 24 hrs) washing over flat farmlands around our house. Nelson County, Virginia was decimated (like WNC,) many families were swept away by mudslides and flash flooding. Many of which have never been found. I think the death toll (deceased recovered) was just over 200. I was 8 years old, my younger brother was 6, the youngest in our family of 11 kids. We were traumatized by what we saw, even on the news. We have feared heavy rains since our childhood. My heart aches for all of the good people who have been affected by Helene. So very sad.
Nelson County got something like 24" of rain in 24 hours. News said slopes over 35 degrees slid into the valleys. People said if you were outside in it that you had to cover your face to breathe, the rain was so heavy. It's so shocking to comprehend.

The 96 year old is so brave and accepting of life and what it offers. She touched me deeply. I hope I can face adversity in my lifetime with her courage and grace.
Reporting only the confirmed dead is not grossly understating anything. It is reporting what the known number is on that particular day. That number is not a final nor unchangeable number.
i was born and raised in Relief NC at one time the post office was here but it was moved to Green Mtn NC just up the road next to OC WITSON store where the 60 min interview took place a lot of history here thought i would share this little bit of history about this place and that flood was real real bad i forgot to say the river separates the two counties Mitchell and Yancey Relief NC in Mitchell County and OC WITSON'S store in Yancey County both counties along water ways was hit very hard at 66 years old never seen anything like this and hope and pray i never will again and thank you to all that helped
Way more casualties than they will ever tell you. Use your brains people how can entire towns get washed away and only a few hundred fatalities? It's impossible, the numbers are in the thousands. This is way worse than Katrina. - Asheville native.
They were warned, I live in another part of the country and all weather reports were saying there is going to be catastrophic flooding in the area. It’s because the hurricane was going to interact with a stalled out low pressure system. This was days in advance. To just say people were not warned is not true. I’m surprised that North Carolina emergency management did not reach out to rural communities that may not watch weather forecasts.
Please stop spreading this as if people are somehow hiding information and only YOU know the truth. You do NOT know. You are guessing. Yes, it’s probably higher, but there were many evacuation notices and shelters set up in advance. I’m here too.

Having worked for 30 years as a humanitarian and first responder all over the world, I can confidently say that volunteers, local communities AND state organs WORKING TOGETHER are the most efficient way to respond to a catastrophy! This is because they have different sets of skills, equipment, knowledge and means, and they complement each other if collaborating.
I can confidently say that as a US Marine Infantryman & as a Lineman that worked & volunteered in the first weeks of Hurricane Helene in NC. Thank God for the Rednecks that live back in those mountains. Guys I've known my whole life who were basically black sheep rose to the occasion & saved so many people for praise that will never come.
my sister lives in black moutain up in the hills. her house barely survived a mudslide. $75,000 to repair ( 2 new retaining walls and several loads of gravel )...her road washed out completely. she's a lucky one; she is on a well so she has water and her electric is back on...road still unpassable, still no internet...these folks are really hurting
Not only has this area been devastated by the flooding; but thousands of people go to these areas every year in the fall for the beautifully scenery. Loosing this income will be detrimental to the area 😢
The tourism industry in Western NC and Eastern TN is a major component of the areas economy, and year round not just in the fall. These folks are going to have a lot of hard times to come.
@@paulherring8959 It won't be that long until ski season. I haven't really seen any coverage of Beech, Sugar, and Appalachian ski resorts. They surely sustained a lot of damage. Tourism is such a big part of western NC , as you said, not just the turning of the leaves and winter sports. The Blue Ridge Parkway has been an old friend of mine since as long as I can remember, Grandfather Mountain mile-high bridge opened up, I believe, the year I was born. Tweetsie Railroad just outside of Boone, camping, hiking, picnicking in summer along the Parkway. I lived in the area for 33 years and know most of Western NC like the back of my hand. My younger daughter is a graduate of Western North Carolina University. I believe Cullowhee and Sylva were hit hard, and Swannanoa. My granddaughter finished nursing school at Lees-McRae in Banner Elk. These mountains are part of me. Most of the coverage has focused on Asheville and Chimney Rock, but other areas were hit hard, as well.
While I haven't practiced my Christian (Catholic) faith, in more than 40 years, I am _moved_ as I listen to Mama sing her praises after such devastation. I sincerely hope that before the end of my days, I will know that comfort...

I'm from Asheville, and I have beautiful memories and family there, what happened here breaks my heart and makes me want to go home and help. No matter where I lay my head, my home will always be there in those beautiful mountains ❤
I’ll never forget the screaming sound the wind made and the sound of trees snapping all around us in the dark. A tree fell 2 feet from where I was sitting in the bed. We had to cut our way out of the road and walk miles to rescue my other family members. The roads were crumbling and everything is caked in feet of mud. I saw a man hanging from a power line and houses floating in the water. I was pregnant before the storm but the stress of everything made me miscarry. The destruction up here is biblical.
God bless these people, we live in Tampa and Helene and Milton destroyed our coastal communities. It is very sad, the devastation and complete destruction. yes, it's terrible. I was there. But this article makes no mention of the terrible devastation in East Tenn. Entire towns wiped off the map. Erwin, Newport, etc. WNC is getting all the coverage.
That's what I've been wondering about. East Tennessee and west NC are the same mountain range, but I haven't heard anything about Tennessee. What are some cities in that area to be keeping and eye out for news on? How can we provide aid to those in the TN mountains?
I'd imagine that's because the damaged area is somewhat smaller in TN than in NC. But there's no doubt that the Nolichucky went completely berserk at around 150K cfs. Just for reference I've kayaked the Nolichucky Gorge at 2.5K cfs and that was quite a challenge. 50 times that flow is flat out insane.
Was just in downtown Newport a couple days ago. There’s still sand, debris, and ruined houses to be seen. However everything else looks pretty much back to normal.
We live just over the border in NC. We travel into TN very often, the mountain city area. There are parts of ETN we drove through where we were still driving over downed powerlines 3 weeks later. It's bad.

The areas have been hit so much harder than people realize. This was worse than the 1916 flood. I really only realized it was going to be bad bad on Wednesday right before it hit on Thursday night because I watched the news on Wednesday (which I never do) & watched Ryan Hall Y’all weather all night on UA-cam (which I always do!)

I never dreamed we would experience a larger storm than that one. One of the teachers from my children’s high school lost 11 family members in the landslide that hit Garren Creek Road.
CBS propaganda about how great FEMA did is just that. I live in Black Mountain which was heavily damaged as were Swannanoa and Bee Tree. There were no FEMA or US army helicopters here even after 3 days. The bodies and body parts in Bee Tree were eaten for 3 days by bears, until private helicopters airlifted the bodies oui. I talked to one couple who had to look at their neighbor's body wrapped around a tree for 3 days and until the body was airlifted out by a PRIVATE helicopter. FEMA had a week's warning. CBS talking their DNC propaganda is disgusting.

My friend who is a police officer went over to check the damage (almost got arrested for it) he saw a man burried in the mud, it came up about to his head. They tried to help him but he said not to. Apparently he said to leave him there, that there was nothing to live for. They asked him why and he said his entire family is gone. They asked him how he new and he responded "they stopped scratching my legs 3 days ago." It made me feel horrible, i cant stop thinking about it.
We live in the area. Heard the same story. In our version fellow was found ontop of a debris pile, buried up to his neck. Said his kids and wife beneath him quit touching his legs days ago.
That is not a real story, that's an old old internet legend. The fact that you're putting it on a news story about how disinformation makes recovery efforts worse makes it particularly nasty.

We did not cancel either trips, although Hurricane Helene was hitting Florida the day we were supposed to be driving in, so we were able to push it back till November. My son and I have been gathering clothes, non perishables, and have changed our relaxing trip to helping the residents as much as we can, especially as we are going to be in North Carolina right at Christmas. My grandparents had a home in the Appalachian mountains since I was a child. They are gone now, but my love for the people and area have not. 😢😢❤❤

I'll be there in December. My family had planned a vacation and a reunion in October our family vacation in (Florida), and our Christmas reunion in December (Boone County). Both places we booked were hit by Hurricanes. My family lives in Georgia, and I live in Alabama with my husband and son, which is why we plan these. We did not cancel either trips, although Hurricane Helene was hitting Florida the day we were supposed to be driving in, so we were able to push it back till November. My son and I have been gathering clothes, non perishables, and have changed our relaxing trip to helping the residents as much as we can, especially as we are going to be in North Carolina right at Christmas. My grandparents had a home in the Appalachian mountains since I was a child. They are gone now, but my love for the people and area have not. 😢😢❤❤
I just spoke with a friend back in North Carolina who told me some of the horror stories that happened to so many in Western Carolina. The positive thing was a recent benefit concert with James Taylor and many Country artists who helped raise 25 million in funds for reparations for all. 82,000 attended the concert.
Having stayed in the Blue Ridges or at the edge of them my entire life, there are so many lives in places that are forever changed. We are not horrifically far from Blowing Rock now and we were spared the heavy and horrible devastation. We even pumped out 9300 gallons from our crawl space, that almost seeped into our floors. Seeing places that I knew like the back of my hand, becoming hardly recognizable is too much know I can only do so much. We always saw flooding off the Tuckaseegee River and of course the Pigeon and Lil T. This is 10x beyond that level of flooding and my heart is beyond sore and broken. It feels surreal still and this region needs HELP 😢. Don't stave them into a corner.
Absolutely right. Why does the media keep saying this low body count? It’s estimated locally in western North Carolina it is estimated at least 5,000 people and still looking. I imagine Florida will be similar. Why will they not give the dead respect and be counted? Shameful.

I had never heard of Asheville... a friend lives there and I was so worried about him as I was watching everything about the storms finally he contacted me. His home and his property gone but so happy he is alive. These People are wonderful and hoping a speedy recovery of all of the storms devastation still have moments stuck in my mind .
For clarity, the Toe river merges with the Cane river and then forms the Nolichucky and flows into Tennessee. The rivers that fed the Asheville flood were different ones.
My cousin was "missing" in Asheville for 9 days before we found out she was alive. I can't imagine still wondering where she is. Im so sorry for all who has lost loved ones. I hope they get closure soon.
That 50 people being missing,. There are thousands of people missing. Every town has people missing. Roland morgz, Mitchell county has four rolling morgues. For Yankee Mitchell and Avery county. Monday we found a 7 year old, little boy in the toe River the next morning we found two before 10:00, there's people dead everywhere.

I'm not sure tallying numbers to report to the general public takes precedence over meeting the urgent needs of survivors and the exhausting and perilous efforts entailed in continuing to search for who might be found. Save the eyebrow raising and cast your eyes down in humility and prayer for all those helping and all those suffering and cease promoting paranoid speculations which the above video already made clear is hurting the needy and even spurring some of them to seek to harm those who are there to help them.

I live in Weaverville, between Asheville, Marshall, and Barnardville. FEMA and 1st responders from hundreds of agencies have poured into the area and we are grateful for the help. 101st Airborne, police, churches, individual citizens, the help has been overwhelming. Which is what we need. An overwhelming amount of help because this disaster has destroyed hundreds of homes and businessess and lives and winter is almost here. We are open for business for leaf season, and we need the tourists to help rebuild.
Yes, fema poured in on day 6 after the storm. The 1st responders poured in in real time as it was happening. The ppl who work for fema are good people. The people in Washington running fema are obviously clueless. It wasn’t a top secret storm. If fema was a legitimate organization they’d of been on the ground Saturday morning after the storm blew over. Blah.

From on the ground in the zone in Western NC, Virtually all the work being done is by the local folks. How can you expect FEMA to cover 500 Sq miles of destruction, they cant. They have most of their resources in Asheville, Unfortunately the majority of the destruction is in the hollers and small towns and cities in the mountains, many still with no or very limited access and limited services. Every person I know with any kind of a machine, excavator, skidstear, backhoe, dozer or dump truck along with the army (seen them up here) are up trying to rebuild roads and put in temporary bridges to gain access to an apocalyptic landscape. Many small towns were scrubbed clean with only rock, sand and dirt remaining, roads and bridges gone. This is the first National News story I've seen after 3 weeks that talks about the back country, everything has been talking about Asheville. I love how they weave the "conspiracy" theory story into the narrative, they try to turn this into a political story because a few folks likely NOT from here start a goofy story. THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STORY, it's a story of heartbreak, strong faith and strong willed folks. I can tell you, WE WILL HELP OUR NEIGHBORS, WE WILL REBUILD, WE WILL SURVIVE and WE WILL DO IT OURSELVES if necessary. The VAST majority of the help is coming from local folks and ministries, WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN.

I wish this wld have just said the Appalachians. I live in Tennessee in a community of under 5k we lost everything. Im still in shock. The water behind my house just kept rising but the last hour before I finally got my cat and dog was the worst because i was panicked. When I left I seen three houses floating coming from a different river system. Had no phone service so had no idea it had gotten this bad. The creek behind my house water doesn't come from the elk River which was the larger river so I didn't know. I just didn't know. Tgat feae keeps coming back even today when tve sun is shining. The lady said it perfectly “hope” and that’s what you have after a disaster. We understand how these folks are feeling after the devastating black summer bushfires that hit us in 2019/20 and then only a month after we were hit by floods. The honesty of what it is like to go through a disaster is something that stays with you and never leaves. We were from a tourist area and we are still repairing and recovering 5 years later. The North Toe River is usually a family tubing river, maybe 2 ft. deep! The North Toe meets the Cane River and turns into the Nolichucky River! The Nolichucky went through Erwin, Tennessee with nearly twice the force of Niagara Falls! Niagara Falls flows at 780,000 gallons per second! The Nolichucky, 1.3 million gallons per second! Devastating!
I am commenting this because it is very important to the surving father of that family of 4 shown at the end that they were not in the white SUV shown pummeled at the end. They were witnessed leaving the vehicle as it began to float, and then where pulled under the tow of the water. It matters very much to him, and to the remaining family and many friends including me to know that they likely died quickly, albeit panicked than being crushed within a vehicle. I don't know if the reporters knew all of the information involving what happened to knox, aly, and the boys, but regardless it is an unspeakable tragedy leaving so much grief.
I live outside of Asheville, N.C. With no power and no way out my development I didn't know the horrific damage that had been done to Western N.C. There were cargo helicopters and aircraft coming in at a regular clip. FEMA IS here. Can they get to everyone in a short time? Of course not. It has been a month now and will be many more before a noticeable improvement is seen. The damage that has been done is enormous and I still can't comprehend even a small bit of it. Don't let someone who lies when his mouth opens get us down. I was lucky living in a new community without hugh trees and losing a few roof shingles and all the food in the freezers. My heart aches for those who fared worse. N.C. needs to stick together and so does this country.
Moved to NC in the mid 90s and never left. People like the ones in this video are why. They treated me like family, and taught me to do the same. Now, my son is passing on that tradition. He's going to college be a teacher. ❤ NC forever and always.
Here is something you failed to talk about... there are 2 military bases within 1 to 3 hour distances of this area. They train for these types of mountain terrain issues. Within hours, they could have had 10,000 highly trained military search and rescue teams in the ground...ir dropped in by air. They dud nit do this. Instead, the residents had to wait for crews to come from all around and other states to help. As for FEMA, i can tell you from people in the ground, this did not happen the way you are resorting. I know. I live within a few hours from there. Our EMT and Fire crews went there immediately followung storm to help rescue people. So did many other communities around us. Our community has been sending truck loads if supplies right away because they did not have even the most necessary items you need to live. Local churches, non profits and volunteers took these things to the people in some of hardest hit areas. People are literally living in tents!! Now... FEMA is there but the Gov did fail to act with our military inly calling in 1200 national guard.... wuth minimal means of supplies or equipment. So while I am glad you are showing the devastation, the ckean up effort, there are still areas the teams are just getting to to still rescue people.
This is exactly what I was thinking about on other videos posted. On why was the Army and National Guard, not activated immediately during or the day after the hurricane. The ARMY could have been there in hours, rescuing people, clearing roads, or making new paths to get to the people trapped or still alive under debris. When was the national guard activated? How many days after the storm?

I live in Asheville, NC. This storm has affected us and the surrounding communities like nothing ever has. It is simply devastating to see this destruction, everywhere you go. We didn’t have power for 16 days. One of my coworkers just got power after 22 days. People in Asheville still don’t have water, or if they do have it, it’s not drinkable. Our beautiful trails have been demolished. Areas look like someone took a lawnmower and mowed all the trees down. I work at one of the hospitals in the area, and the stories of survival from the patients there are amazing. There are also many stories of those who were not so fortunate. The loss our area has had just brings me to tears.
Praying the Lord gives you strength, peace & brings your hometown back bigger & better.

I went to help this family yesterday. I don’t even realize they were on 60 min. They got denied FEMA help. So where is all the money going they say they’ve given out if people like this aren’t getting it? The only people there helping were people like you and me. Some from FL. Some from TN. My entire family - both sides - is from/ still live in Green Mountain. Pigeon Roost and Bailey Settlement are the next two communities along the Toe River past Relief. My blood runs deep in those hills even though I reside inn Charlotte. Best people you could ever meet. Heartbroken.

I was flooded out here in NE Tennessee…all furniture lost plus priceless (to us) family pics and heirlooms. After 9 nights in a hotel room and now having been completely relocated, my family and I agree that even with all of the loss we were lucky. Other families in Western NC and NE TN lost loved ones on top of everything they owned. It’s been a terrible situation. The whole Appalachian area has been hit harder than any other time during my life… but THE COMMUNITIES have brought us all together and we will rebuild and restart our lives in this beautiful area we all call home. I'm sure it's not the only advancement they made in their efforts, not sure HOW accurate they can spin it but with the level of technology these days I guess anything is possible.

I live in Balsam. We lost power for 6 days. At first I was angry and wanted my power restored but then I started hearing stories about my surrounding areas and completely changed my attitude. I’m still mad at myself about feeling that way. I’m grateful that loosing power was the only thing to happen. I’m praying for everyone in WNC. We are family and we are strong!
I lost power for 13 days and water for 17. The water is not safe yet. I consider myself fortunate compared to others I know.
Please don’t be mad at yourself for your initial reaction. The frustration you were feeling is valid. “When you know better,you do better”. Some people cling to that bitterness and never see past the end of their noses. Your attitude shifted when you had all the information! I live here, and the storm was devastating, but our mountain community is strong and resilient. The outpouring of help has been tremendous. We work together, and we will come back stronger. 60 Minutes presented an excellent piece. Thank you to volunteers, linemen, military personnel, FEMA, Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, Public Safety, neighbors, strangers, family, and friends, and all who have tirelessly jumped in without question and given their unconditional time and efforts to help. My son has taken off work and been up there twice. I crochet beanie caps on my circular machine and have sent over 100 hats up there. That was awful, all four of them were lost, the mom, mom's fiance, and the two little ones. He was the manager of a store in my town, I feel so sad every time I drive past it now.

Having visited this area quite often (I'm from upstate S.C) and working in the Blue Ridge foothills during the summer; I experienced the "magic" of those mountains. I will always be aware and in awe of the resilience, grit, determination, hope, and faith of the people of Appalachia and Western N.C.. True Americans.

Helene was poised directly over my horse farm in Georgia, and shifted at the last minute, how it gained such power and hit North Carolina like it did when it should have been dying out is beyond me. My heart goes out! I did not sleep that night and had my boots on for what that was worth. Mother Nature is stronger than all of us combined.
I think it was the three days of rain prior to the storm that increased the devastation exponentially. The timing of the storm was just horrible.

I couldn’t sleep either. I kept cooking a huge pot of chicken stew & storing water in anything possible, just in case. The force was tremendous!

I'm a Western N.C. resident. About 35min from Asheville on the NC/TN border, Mitchell County N.C. Houses, landmarks, and entire mountain sides are just gone. The devastation is just indescribable. I have a 6 month old son and it makes me so sad to know that the world I grew up in isn't one that he will ever know. It is gone. Was turned down for the $750 FEMA check. Apparently, I'm not eligible. Even though we lost much of our belongings and had to move homes. WE- as in the community, are helping one another. It's certainly NOT coming from the government. 😢

As a teacher I was able to live in Asheville this past summer and was surprised to see TONS of people living outside. Not just homeless, its a hiking area for people doing the Appalachian Trail and groups of college kids. The number of dead is most likely a lot higher, it was a special place.
There's been recovery folks telling about what was homeless encampments where hundreds were lost, some only body parts found in trees, hillsides, flood embankments. They remarked many are still buried under the sentiments and silt and will take years to recover them all. Overwhelming.

We are in the rural Blue Ridge mountains of western Virginia. I remember hurricane Camille in 1969. We had two feet of rainwater (in 24 hrs) washing over flat farmlands around our house. Nelson County, Virginia was decimated (like WNC,) many families were swept away by mudslides and flash flooding. Many of which have never been found. I think the death toll (deceased recovered) was just over 200. I was 8 years old, my younger brother was 6, the youngest in our family of 11 kids. We were traumatized by what we saw, even on the news. We have feared heavy rains since our childhood. My heart aches for all of the good people who have been affected by Helene. So very sad.
Nelson County got something like 24" of rain in 24 hours. News said slopes over 35 degrees slid into the valleys. People said if you were outside in it that you had to cover your face to breathe, the rain was so heavy. It's so shocking to comprehend.
Nobody remembers Camille anymore. That hurricane was death itself walking across the states.

i was born and raised in Relief NC at one time the post office was here but it was moved to Green Mtn NC just up the road next to OC WITSON store where the 60 min interview took place a lot of history here thought i would share this little bit of history about this place and that flood was real real bad i forgot to say the river separates the two counties Mitchell and Yancey Relief NC in Mitchell County and OC WITSON'S store in Yancey County both counties along water ways was hit very hard at 66 years old never seen anything like this and hope and pray i never will again and thank you to all that helped

They were warned, I live in another part of the country and all weather reports were saying there is going to be catastrophic flooding in the area. It’s because the hurricane was going to interact with a stalled out low pressure system. This was days in advance. To just say people were not warned is not true. I’m surprised that North Carolina emergency management did not reach out to rural communities that may not watch weather forecasts.

Having worked for 30 years as a humanitarian and first responder all over the world, I can confidently say that volunteers, local communities AND state organs WORKING TOGETHER are the most efficient way to respond to a catastrophy! This is because they have different sets of skills, equipment, knowledge and means, and they complement each other if collaborating.
AND, the Federal Government (FEMA) is needed here too.
100 million dollars already invested in the area. That is why an organization like FEMA is needed!

my sister lives in black moutain up in the hills. her house barely survived a mudslide. $75,000 to repair ( 2 new retaining walls and several loads of gravel )...her road washed out completely. she's a lucky one; she is on a well so she has water and her electric is back on...road still unpassable, still no internet...these folks are really hurting

The tourism industry in Western NC and Eastern TN is a major component of the areas economy, and year round not just in the fall. These folks are going to have a lot of hard times to come.
@@paulherring8959 It won't be that long until ski season. I haven't really seen any coverage of Beech, Sugar, and Appalachian ski resorts. They surely sustained a lot of damage. Tourism is such a big part of western NC , as you said, not just the turning of the leaves and winter sports. The Blue Ridge Parkway has been an old friend of mine since as long as I can remember, Grandfather Mountain mile-high bridge opened up, I believe, the year I was born. Tweetsie Railroad just outside of Boone, camping, hiking, picnicking in summer along the Parkway. I lived in the area for 33 years and know most of Western NC like the back of my hand. My younger daughter is a graduate of Western North Carolina University. I believe Cullowhee and Sylva were hit hard, and Swannanoa. My granddaughter finished nursing school at Lees-McRae in Banner Elk. These mountains are part of me. Most of the coverage has focused on Asheville and Chimney Rock, but other areas were hit hard, as well.

I’ll never forget the screaming sound the wind made and the sound of trees snapping all around us in the dark. A tree fell 2 feet from where I was sitting in the bed. We had to cut our way out of the road and walk miles to rescue my other family members. The roads were crumbling and everything is caked in feet of mud. I saw a man hanging from a power line and houses floating in the water. I was pregnant before the storm but the stress of everything made me miscarry. The destruction up here is biblical.
God bless these people, we live in Tampa and Helene and Milton destroyed our coastal communities. It is very sad, the devastation and complete destruction. That's what I've been wondering about. East Tennessee and west NC are the same mountain range, but I haven't heard anything about Tennessee. What are some cities in that area to be keeping and eye out for news on? How can we provide aid to those in the TN mountains?
I'd imagine that's because the damaged area is somewhat smaller in TN than in NC. But there's no doubt that the Nolichucky went completely berserk at around 150K cfs. Just for reference I've kayaked the Nolichucky Gorge at 2.5K cfs and that was quite a challenge. 50 times that flow is flat out insane.
Was just in downtown Newport a couple days ago. There’s still sand, debris, and ruined houses to be seen. However everything else looks pretty much back to normal.
We live just over the border in NC. We travel into TN very often, the mountain city area. There are parts of ETN we drove through where we were still driving over downed powerlines 3 weeks later. It's bad.
My brother lives in Elizabethton. He said Hampton was hit hard.

The areas have been hit so much harder than people realize. This was worse than the 1916 flood. I really only realized it was going to be bad bad on Wednesday right before it hit on Thursday night because I watched the news on Wednesday (which I never do) & watched Ryan Hall Y’all weather all night on UA-cam (which I always do!)
All the old people used to always talk about the 1916 flood.

I never dreamed we would experience a larger storm than that one. One of the teachers from my children’s high school lost 11 family members in the landslide that hit Garren Creek Road.

There were no FEMA or US army helicopters here even after 3 days. The bodies and body parts in Bee Tree were eaten for 3 days by bears, until private helicopters airlifted the bodies oui. I talked to one couple who had to look at their neighbor's body wrapped around a tree for 3 days and until the body was airlifted out by a PRIVATE helicopter. FEMA had a week's warning. CBS talking their DNC propaganda is disgusting.

My friend who is a police officer went over to check the damage (almost got arrested for it) he saw a man burried in the mud, it came up about to his head. They tried to help him but he said not to. Apparently he said to leave him there, that there was nothing to live for. They asked him why and he said his entire family is gone. They asked him how he new and he responded "they stopped scratching my legs 3 days ago." It made me feel horrible, i cant stop thinking about it.

We live in the area. Heard the same story. In our version fellow was found ontop of a debris pile, buried up to his neck. Said his kids and wife beneath him quit touching his legs days ago.
That is not a real story, that's an old old internet legend. The fact that you're putting it on a news story about how disinformation makes recovery efforts worse makes it particularly nasty.

My son and I have been gathering clothes, non perishables, and have changed our relaxing trip to helping the residents as much as we can, especially as we are going to be in North Carolina right at Christmas. I just spoke with a friend back in North Carolina who told me some of the horror stories that happened to so many in Western Carolina. The positive thing was a recent benefit concert with James Taylor and many Country artists who helped raise 25 million in funds for reparations for all. 82,000 attended the concert.

Having stayed in the Blue Ridges or at the edge of them my entire life, there are so many lives in places that are forever changed. We are not horrifically far from Blowing Rock now and we were spared the heavy and horrible devastation. We even pumped out 9300 gallons from our crawl space, that almost seeped into our floors. Seeing places that I knew like the back of my hand, becoming hardly recognizable is too much know I can only do so much. We always saw flooding off the Tuckaseegee River and of course the Pigeon and Lil T. This is 10x beyond that level of flooding and my heart is beyond sore and broken. It feels surreal still and this region needs HELP 😢. Don't stave them into a corner.

I had never heard of Asheville... a friend lives there and I was so worried about him as I was watching everything about the storms finally he contacted me. His home and his property gone but so happy he is alive. These People are wonderful and hoping a speedy recovery of all of the storms devastation still have moments stuck in my mind .

For clarity, the Toe river merges with the Cane river and then forms the Nolichucky and flows into Tennessee. The rivers that fed the Asheville flood were different ones.

That 50 people being missing,. There are thousands of people missing. Every town has people missing. Roland morgz, Mitchell county has four rolling morgues. For Yankee Mitchell and Avery county. Monday we found a 7 year old, little boy in the toe River the next morning we found two before 10:00, there's people dead everywhere.

@@missyk1477 the scope of devastation and the vast needs being met as fast as can be organized includes trying to gain accurate information about who is not accounted for yet, who has been found and who is living and not of those found, but it takes time. I'm not sure tallying numbers to report to the general public takes precedence over meeting the urgent needs of survivors and the exhausting and perilous efforts entailed in continuing to search for who might be found. Save the eyebrow raising and cast your eyes down in humility and prayer for all those helping and all those suffering and cease promoting paranoid speculations which the above video already made clear is hurting the needy and even spurring some of them to seek to harm those who are there to help them.

I live in Weaverville, between Asheville, Marshall, and Barnardville. FEMA and 1st responders from hundreds of agencies have poured into the area and we are grateful for the help. 101st Airborne, police, churches, individual citizens, the help has been overwhelming. Which is what we need. An overwhelming amount of help because this disaster has destroyed hundreds of homes and businessess and lives and winter is almost here. We are open for business for leaf season, and we need the tourists to help rebuild.

Yes, fema poured in on day 6 after the storm. The 1st responders poured in in real time as it was happening. The ppl who work for fema are good people. The people in Washington running fema are obviously clueless. It wasn’t a top secret storm. If fema was a legitimate organization they’d of been on the ground Saturday morning after the storm blew over. Blah.

From on the ground in the zone in Western NC, Virtually all the work being done is by the local folks. How can you expect FEMA to cover 500 Sq miles of destruction, they cant. They have most of their resources in Asheville, Unfortunately the majority of the destruction is in the hollers and small towns and cities in the mountains, many still with no or very limited access and limited services. Every person I know with any kind of a machine, excavator, skidstear, backhoe, dozer or dump truck along with the army (seen them up here) are up trying to rebuild roads and put in temporary bridges to gain access to an apocalyptic landscape. Many small towns were scrubbed clean with only rock, sand and dirt remaining, roads and bridges gone. This is the first National News story I've seen after 3 weeks that talks about the back country, everything has been talking about Asheville. I love how they weave the "conspiracy" theory story into the narrative, they try to turn this into a political story because a few folks likely NOT from here start a goofy story. THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STORY, it's a story of heartbreak, strong faith and strong willed folks. I can tell you, WE WILL HELP OUR NEIGHBORS, WE WILL REBUILD, WE WILL SURVIVE and WE WILL DO IT OURSELVES if necessary. The VAST majority of the help is coming from local folks and ministries, WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN.

I just got home I got there the 14th the deviation is beyond words. It’s absolutely astonishing the scale of it. There’s so much bad information out there about what’s going on. The only thing I know is there’s at least 10 times as many deaths than what’s being reported

I wish this wld have just said the Appalachians. I live in Tennessee in a community of under 5k we lost everything. Im still in shock. The water behind my house just kept rising but the last hour before I finally got my cat and dog was the worst because i was panicked. When I left I seen three houses floating coming from a different river system. Had no phone service so had no idea it had gotten this bad. The creek behind my house water doesn't come from the elk River which was the larger river so I didn't know. I just didn't know. Tgat feae keeps coming back even today when tve sun is shining. Prayers prayers

The lady said it perfectly “hope” and that’s what you have after a disaster. We understand how these folks are feeling after the devastating black summer bushfires that hit us in 2019/20 and then only a month after we were hit by floods. The honesty of what it is like to go through a disaster is something that stays with you and never leaves. We were from a tourist area and we are still repairing and recovering 5 years later. The North Toe River is usually a family tubing river, maybe 2 ft. deep! The North Toe meets the Cane River and turns into the Nolichucky River! The Nolichucky went through Erwin, Tennessee with nearly twice the force of Niagara Falls! Niagara Falls flows at 780,000 gallons per second! The Nolichucky, 1.3 million gallons per second! Devastating!

I am commenting this because it is very important to the surving father of that family of 4 shown at the end that they were not in the white SUV shown pummeled at the end. They were witnessed leaving the vehicle as it began to float, and then where pulled under the tow of the water. It matters very much to him, and to the remaining family and many friends including me to know that they likely died quickly, albeit panicked than being crushed within a vehicle. I don't know if the reporters knew all of the information involving what happened to knox, aly, and the boys, but regardless it is an unspeakable tragedy leaving so much grief.

I live outside of Asheville, N.C. With no power and no way out my development I didn't know the horrific damage that had been done to Western N.C. There were cargo helicopters and aircraft coming in at a regular clip. FEMA IS here. Can they get to everyone in a short time? Of course not. It has been a month now and will be many more before a noticeable improvement is seen. The damage that has been done is enormous and I still can't comprehend even a small bit of it. Don't let someone who lies when his mouth opens get us down. I was lucky living in a new community without hugh trees and losing a few roof shingles and all the food in the freezers. My heart aches for those who fared worse. N.C. needs to stick together and so does this country.
Moved to NC in the mid 90s and never left. People like the ones in this video are why. They treated me like family, and taught me to do the same. Now, my son is passing on that tradition. He's going to college be a teacher. ❤ NC forever and always.
Here is something you failed to talk about... there are 2 military bases within 1 to 3 hour distances of this area. They train for these types of mountain terrain issues. Within hours, they could have had 10,000 highly trained military search and rescue teams in the ground...ir dropped in by air. They dud nit do this. Instead, the residents had to wait for crews to come from all around and other states to help. As for FEMA, i can tell you from people in the ground, this did not happen the way you are resorting.
I know. I live within a few hours from there. Our EMT and Fire crews went there immediately followung storm to help rescue people. So did many other communities around us. Our community has been sending truck loads if supplies right away because they did not have even the most necessary items you need to live.
Local churches, non profits and volunteers took these things to the people in some of hardest hit areas. People are literally living in tents!! Now... FEMA is there but the Gov did fail to act with our military inly calling in 1200 national guard.... wuth minimal means of supplies or equipment. So while I am glad you are showing the devastation, the ckean up effort, there are still areas the teams are just getting to to still rescue people.
This is exactly what I was thinking about on other videos posted. On why was the Army and National Guard, not activated immediately during or the day after the hurricane. The ARMY could have been there in hours, rescuing people, clearing roads, or making new paths to get to the people trapped or still alive under debris.
When was the national guard activated? How many days after the storm?
