  • Steering column was frozen and needed to be rebuilt in order to get 1968 F100 to shift into gear. Wanted to keep truck as original as possible. Able to get shift levers free with the use of Evaporust and some elbow grease.

    There are all kinds of vintage Ford truck parts suppliers online. You're not the only guy out there restoring an old F-10 or F-100.

    Thanks gonna use this video to fix my 72 f100 the column tube broke and didn't know where to start hopefully I'll get her back on the road. It's an automatic but should still be same concept I hope.

    Mac's Auto Parts (Eckler's) has a lot of obscure parts for classic Fords. I'll warn you up front, they're damn proud of their stuff. I use them as a last resort since they are so ridiculously expensive (I used to go to them first).

      I like both old and new. This has been my dream to get it fixed up for the past several years since it has been sitting. My dad wanted to but just hasn't had the time.

    i have a 73 f100 that sits for long periods , and the shifter gets very stiff . remove steering wheel , pour some trans fluid down the tube , and it frees up in a few shifts .

    I am new to this column shifter world. As I just picked up a 66 f100. I'm not sure what I need but there is pretty much a 2" metal screw and some wire holding the shift "lever" on to the column. And not sure if I can just buy parts to fix this issue

    I can't tell how wide that plastic piece is there around minute 5:00. But I wonder if you could use a plastic 12 or 10 gauge shotgun shell to replace it? I'm sure you could find one online too.

    Great video. Thanks! I am in much better shape with my 66 Bronco steering column but I really need to replace the bushings / shift levers. I bought the column shift levers with the bushings in place. Is there any way to replace those without completely pulling the column? I know it must be tricky since my mechanic keeps telling the bushings are "fine" which they are not. "fine" means "this is going to be difficult so leave it alone" I am thinking. Thanks again!

    I have a 67 Ford Galaxie with 3 on the tree, but those spacers are missing that go between those shift linkages. I thought it was a bushing that goes in there, but it looks like you just put spacers in there. Does that work without a bushing to keep them centered?

    Denis carpenter may have That bushing. Th for this vid. Had to tear mine apart also. I think I will replace mine later with an idiot one. I have a 68 short box that I am working on right now.

    Hey I have the same truck and am getting ready to rebuild the shift linkage. i was able to buy all the parts new from C&G F100 parts. Everything new was just under $200.

    • @C2H6Garage
      @C2H6Garage  7 років тому

      nopa2 thanks, I will have to take a look at that for sure. I am really looking forward to getting this all fixed up and rod worthy. Got a good battery in it, replaced the rag joint, and got 4 tires that hold air so it is drivable but not more than around the block... No brakes yet. What does yours look like?

    • @nopa2
      @nopa2 7 років тому

      You're welcome C2H6. My F100 is pretty rough, but not as bad as one would think for a truck that sat outside for the last 15 years. I just rebuilt the carb, new brakes and wheel cylinders in front and getting ready to do the same in the rear. Once i rebuild the steering column it will be road worthy. The paint has a good rust/patina to it and will add some more then clear coat it for now. Kinda rat roddish i guess you could say. I just painted the wheels flat black, but they got a little glossy when I sprayed the clear coat on. Still needs a tune up and belts and hoses, but that is simple stuff.

      C2H6 hey was wondering how your truck is coming...I finally pulled the column out this morning. Did you ever order the parts for your steering column?

    • @C2H6Garage
      @C2H6Garage  7 років тому

      I have not ordered parts. I will order the new parts when putting it back in the truck after the full restoration. The overall project has been on hold this summer and hope to get back to it when work slows down this fall.

    have someone 3d print that part. if you have the old one still someone could model and print it for you. also I saw you mentioned you might get a tripod and I support that decision. hard to watch this video while drunk.

    C3DZ-3517-A .. Upper/Lower Steering Column Bearing / Available from Ford. MSRP each: $10.68
    B1AZ-3518-A .. Nylon Bearing Sleeve / Available from Ford. MSRP each: $10.12
    Applications for both: 1961/65 F100/250 2WD/4WD upper/lower / 1966 F100 4WD upper / 1967/72 F100/250 2WD & F350 upper/lower / 1967/72 F100/250 4WD upper.
    The rag joint wasn't introduced until 1965 so none previous.

      The Valiant Channel
      I like how the camera is held by hand. I think it makes the video original and genuine. Plus if he wanted to show you something up close, he would have to keep moving the part or the camera closer in the scene for us to know what he's talking about.
