Poseidon X Gravel Bike Upgrade Build Part 1, Compression-less Brake Housing

  • In this video we take the Poseidon X gravel bike and give it it’s first major upgrade. With the brakes being the weak point of this bike, this area had to be addressed first. We swapped the old brake housing out for some compression less housing. This mod gets rid of the squishy brake feel and applies all of the braking force to the rotor.

    Investing in a Park Tool brake housing cutter is worth it, it also cuts the brake cable and has a crimp for the cable ends. A tip for routing the rear brake housing is too pull the old housing off from the rear of the bike and use the cable to run the new housing through the frame. Good video, just ordered my Poseidon X in Olive Drab, looking forward to hitting all the gravel around here!

    Thanks so much for this video! I love my Poseidon X but know nothing about how to work on it. This video definitely made me feel confident in attempting to change the break cables and housing. I look forward to more upgrade videos!

      Thanks Shawn for checking out the channel, I was hesitant as well to do this project but after diving in it proved to be relatively easy. Good luck if you decide to swap yours.

    im just now finding this video, i have a 2019 poseidon X literally same one as this vid color and everything. I HATE the brakes, the seat was terrible!! I replaced the seat, I changed the factory tape because of how hard and uncomfortable it was. amazing bike for the money otherwise, am currently ordering the cables for this now! thanks for the video!

    I have a redwood drop bar and those stock brakes are completely trash. The compression-less make it night and day. Nice bikes but almost dangerous with the stock brakes

    I have had the parys on the bench for a month... now that I see how you did the internal routing, I'm ready to go.
    Thanks.

    Great video. I recently purchased a Poseidon Bike and yeah it's a great bike but the brakes are pretty much trash, I would definitely need to change them

    Great video. I'm going to swap my cables out as well and order another one already have a Poseidon ax I pulled my back brakes completely off rotors and all I never use them I race downhill and uphill. I never really touch my back brakes so I just ditched them for the weight savings but my new bike I'm going to call Louis and see if I can get a 2022 yellow frame and I'll probably keep both brakes on that one but otherwise I'm a maniac up front brakes only I generally don't stop I'll just ditch and get out of my line

    As many, I got my Poseidon X Ambition and surprised how bad regular brakes are.
    Fortunately, I found this video 😅
    Could you tell if there is difference between Jagwire - Road Pro Brake KIT and just 10 meters of cable? Or there is other reason why you bought cable, housing and caps separately?
    Thank you

    I have been using my Poseidon x for a year now and didn't realize the break power issue was due to the brake housing until 2 months ago. I changed the cables and the housing and after that something I observed is that when using it on a rainy day (literally it was just one day), the water enters the brake housing and gets stuck under the bottom bracket and the cable rusts in that area. The first month after changing the housing and after just one rain I had brake power problems again.

      Good to know, might be good to add some type of oil or lube to the housing?

    I know what everyone is feeling, but for me it took better pads. The tektro pads sent with the X suck. Not sure what it is about them. I got a better brand pad, sanded off a little material on them, fine tuned the brakes with the caliper adjustment as close as I could get them to the rotors, and the brake feel (and how it sounds braking) is a huge improvement. This is without the new brake cable housing.

    Just got 2 Poseidon x ambitions. The brakes are so lackluster. Going to do this upgrade for sure. Will I need to get new inner steel wire or can I use the factory steel wire? Thanks in advance. Great video.

      You can use the original one, but if you really want to improve the braking quality you can get a new coated one.

    Great video. Upgrading the cables and crank this week. do you think the barrel adjusters for the brakes are needed? I thinking of installing the continuous line like yours. Also any thoughts on the stock wheelset and another upgrade?

    • @bluecollaroutdoors5556
      @bluecollaroutdoors5556  2 роки тому +1

      Barrel adjusters can be nice to have if you need to make small adjustments to eliminate brake rubbing. For the brakes that this bike has there is not a very tight tolerance between the pads and the rotor so once you get the cable set you shouldn’t have to adjust it much. My thoughts on the stock wheelset, heavy and not tubeless compatible. I may get the mason and hunt gravel wheelset in the future, but doing an upgrade that is going to cost a minimum of $600 not sure if it’s worth it to me, but would save tons of weight.

      Glad you enjoyed the video, I actually just removed the barrel adjusters for right now and I haven’t had any issues. I do plan on upgrading the cable next and I may add them back in, but for now I left them out to keep it simple and streamlined.

      I just did this with mine, but I found I had to abandon the in line barrel adjusters since the cable is less flexible it was pinching at the adjusters. But I am putting TRP Spyre dual piston calipers on which have a barrel adjuster built in.

    I haven’t figured out how to adjust the reach. Even w the shorter reach cap of the adventx, the right hand shifter / brake has to be really pulled back to apply the brakes.
    Any advice?

    • @bluecollaroutdoors5556
      @bluecollaroutdoors5556  Рік тому

      With all of those adjustments not working enough you may need to purchase a shorter bar stem. The shorter stem will move the bars back without having to tilt them back to compensate. Hopefully this helps.

    • @soapdishjp

      I literally just did the cable replacement tonight. Since I had the kit and there weren't enough cable ends to add the barrel adjusters (and I found them to be finicky and didn't do a whole lot anyway) I just said eff it, went ahead without them, and it appears I didn't need them. I had to dial the brake mounts in a bit after replacement but the compressionless housing was noticeably better. Probably not as good as dual sided calipers but a big improvement for the price.

    • @bluecollaroutdoors5556
      @bluecollaroutdoors5556  Рік тому

      Yes I did remove the barrel adjusters, and I did the main adjustment at the caliper. I do plan to put the barrels back in on a later date and install new inner cables.

    How did you measure to cut your housing, just put it up against the old housing?

    • @bluecollaroutdoors5556
      @bluecollaroutdoors5556  2 роки тому +1

      With the cable removed from the housing I measured it and cut the new housing to be 3 inches shorter to allow for the cable to be exposed at the end
