  • In this impromptu video, I show how fast and easy it is to make a major improvement in braking power and climbing prowess on the Poseidon Redwood. I replace a portion of the stock rear brake cable with Jagwire compressionless cable housing and enjoy an immediate increase in braking power. I can easily lock up the rear wheel with minimal effort - a good test but not recommended on trails. I also changed the chainring from the stock 38 tooth ring to a 34T Race Face ring. Not only is climbing easier now, but l also save some weight in the process!

    Nice honest video! Thank you.
    I know it is a lot of work to undo the bar tape, but I would have done the entire housing instead only that part.
    Best regards!

      Yes! Now that I know it actually helps, I’m going to do the front line and the rest of the rear under the tape. Plus I need practice wrapping bar tape :) thanks for the view abs comment!

    My mission for this evening. Sounds like for round one it make a good difference without even bothering with the section under the bar tape. Excellent.

    Great video, I am always afraid to do mechanical work on my bikes, but you made it very easy to grasp! Thanks, I just ordered two sets for my X and my Redwood. I will install after they arrive this Weekend. Cheers!!!

    I find that compression-less housing also cuts cleaner as well.

    You sure bought a great-value and performing bike! I think I'd make the very same upgrades although I'd take the trouble to remove the bar tape and only run compressionless housing on both brakes. On the front compressionless housing might give you a little more power, which you say you don't want (I would), but should make the brake less spongy and with better feedback. I think you've also upgraded the tyres, which I would also have done. Enjoy Rebecca's Private Idaho!

      Agreed! I’m planning on doing the fronts next. I still have like 8 feet of cable left, so why not! Thanks for the comment!

    Standard issue brakes are weak, agreed. I’m swapping out the drop bars for flat bars, Soma Dream. Will hopefully have the breaking force I’m looking for by using mountain bike brake levers. Planning on loading it up with some weight for bike packing and will need better breaking ability.

      We’ve considered flat bars. Going to try Ritchey Beacon bars as they offer much shallower drop.

    Great video that's my next step I ride the Poseidon X I put thousands of miles on this bike the brakes are shot we're going to say almost nonexistent I just deal with it it is way time to change everything up.

    Compressionless sure is an upgrade, I just did this only bikes with the Spyre brakes to get the bite I needed. One thing I am not sure why you wouldn't just replace the entire cable? There is an adjuster at the caliper you don't need two.

      Hi Kevin! Thanks for the comment. I wanted to test the effect before unwrapping the bar tape and changing out the top segments. I've since done the entire run and love it. Thanks for the watch and words!

      @@time2play_outdoors did you have to use anything else to keep the barrel adjusters after replacing the segment under the bar tap, or are the ends that come with the JagWire kit enough to allow you to reinstall the adjusters?

    Late comment, I know, but I think you could have even better results with just using a full length of that compressionless cable housing from the brake lever to the brake caliper. It looks that you have left the part of the old housing at the brake lever? If yes, then this part will still compress and will decrease the whole effect. I know that it would need some extra work for unwrapping / wrapping the bar tape, but I think it's worth to do so. And, IMO, no barrel adjuster for the brake near the handlebar is needed, this is another point adding some unwanted movement. That POP end is also not necessary, just use a metal ferrule (avoid plastic ones) into the barrel adjuster of the brake caliper. The less "junction points", the better.

      Hi Mick: I ended up converting the rest of the cable as I've since swapped to flat/alt bars on the bikes.

    If you can't lock your wheel you might as well use rim brakes. Basically means your bike can't brake. Does that mean that most modern cheap bikes can't brake?

    • @time2play_outdoors
      @time2play_outdoors  Рік тому

      I can’t say for sure, but I agree that proper braking power requires hydraulic disk brakes or high end mechanicals like Paul Components

    Good video - Is the housing the 5mm Jagwire? And any special size on the inner cable or is that standard? (Newbie here) Thanks!

    have you tried those fatter 2.0mm and 2.3mm rotors? I hear those work better too more so in the summer and when brakes get hotter.

    I just bought a redwood and the brakes were terrible, also have a Poseidon x with the same issue, tried all kinds of adjusting. Was yours the same when you bought it or the brakes weren't too bad for you?

    • @time2play_outdoors
      @time2play_outdoors  3 роки тому +3

      The brakes were awful. It was impossible to lock up the rear brake! Like you, I adjusted and adjusted to no avail. The compressionless cable made a huge difference! However, I recently did a big mountain ride with some steep and loose descents and I longed for more braking power. So I just installed compressionless cable on the front brake and may upgrade to a 180mm front rotor. That would require an aftermarket adapter from Analog Cycles (not cheap). If your rides aren’t crazy steep I’d do the housing upgrade - it might just be enough improvement for you. Thanks for the watch and comment!!

      @@time2play_outdoors Update ! :) Today was too windy to ride, so decided to replace rear brake cable housing with Jagwire compression less. Since my redwood came without cable tension adjuster near the handlebars, only in the rear on the brake, decided to do the same. Had to unwrap the handlebar tape on the right side. Anyway - the difference is notable, rear brake became more responsive, comparing to the original housing. I did not replace front one, I think due to the very short front cable housing - front break works amazingly well as is. For the rear brake, definitely worth it. Thank you Andy!
