    A nice nod that happened in 2021 was the netherlands where Jeangu Macrooy sang in Sranan Tongo. Not an official language for the Netherlands but a language that was seen as inferior and at some point even fobidden to be spoken in Suriname, a former colony of the Netherlands. It was the first time the language was ever spoken on the eurovision stage, and I can imagine, a great honour for Jeangu.

    I much prefer songs sung in native language. What a shame Sweden hasn't sent a Swedish song since 1998. Such a beautiful language that we never hear any more. I really don't understand why they do it. Spain, Italy, France and much of eastern Europe seem to care for more about their cultural identity than north west Europe and Scandinavia.

    • @Gulamaja
      @Gulamaja Рік тому +10

      It's because many Swedes really believe that a song in Swedish would not do well in the contest because so few people would understand the song and Finland not qualifying with such a beautiful song in 2012 did not help. I'm Swedish btw and this is what I've heard through the years.

      @@Gulamaja I mean, pretty much no one in Europe understands Portuguese, Romanian, Dutch, Icelandic, Estonian or Lithuanian yet that didn't stop those countries from getting points from many countries and having success in the past. Frankly it feels like just a weak excuse. You guys simply have a bigger english pop culture in general and are used to it from the get go, thus is what you lean into when it comes to your choice at Melfest. That and, let's face it, most songs in Swedish at Melfest feel like the producers feel obligated to include them and the ones that are good/great aren't given the support by the producers that the english ones get, you can generally tell in Melfest what songs SVT wants to see win

      I hope someday a good one find its way to the eurovision stage - in swiss german. As the Eurovision Song Contest in its core is an event to celebrate diversity which is often being enriched by different cultural influences from all the different countries participating. And in fact swiss german is an important part of the swiss culture. As the french, italian and rumantsch languages are!

    • @dmn_gs7597
      @dmn_gs7597 Рік тому +2

      @Ligma Baals hi to Ticino from Zürich then! Well, in my opinion there's also nothing that would make a more serious swiss german song impossible. Two examples: ua-cam.com/video/fmF77eGQb0k/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/Kq6oaRm-c5c/v-deo.html
      Off course these aren't Eurovision songs, as one is about 30 years old (Scharlachrot by Patent Ochsner) and the other one 300. (Guggisberglied, i like the version by Stephan Eicher) But nonetheless in my opinion they prove that swiss german can embody a lot also in slow songs. I think songs just have to be well written and well sung, the language has to be authentic and sincere, but i believe, that any language can work well!
      Anyways I hope next year Switzerland will be sending something different again - as three times ballads and four times male singers in a row is a bit too one dimensional.

      So everyone should be _forced_ to switch the language like in the middle of the song and sing some verses in another language? So all of the songs would be some kind of hybrid mashup songs that only exist in Eurovision, and no where else in the music industry? That's hardly diversity, if everyone is forced to do the same thing.
      I think it's so much better when the artists are free to write and sing songs in whatever songs _they_ prefer, and each national selection contest is allowed to vote for the song they prefer, the less rules and dictatorship the better.

    Sweden in theory has Finnish as an official language also but Sweden did dirty and split Finnish speakers as 2 language groups - Finnish and Meänkieli. That way Sweden did't have to recognize Finnish as official language. Meänkieli is basically just one northern dialect of Finnish. If you can speak Finnish you probably understand 99% what a Meänkieli speaker says.
    Finland has recognized Swedish as official language and we have had Eurovision songs both in Finnish and Swedish. Sami language is not official language in Finland but we have strong language support for it (most official documents are available also in Sami and there are news and other media in Sami).

    100% native language over English but, granted, there are some great songs in English in the contest's history. I just think it makes the contest much more interesting when a country showcases their culture and language. I personally think 2015-2017 era was decent musically but slightly boring. A 50/50 split between English and Native language songs every year would be great to see and also not knowing which countries will sing in their native language each year. UMK have got it right to encourage a circa 50/50 split in their national final. I understand why people want songs in English as it is pretty universally spoken but native languages is part of what sets Eurovision apart. (This is the hill I will die on!).

    Didn't France 2022 sing in Breton, native language to the Bretagne region?
    Also as an Austrian I really wish we or our neighbours would send a German song again.

    The information that you have about Norway not sending a song in the Sámi language is wrong. They competed with the song "Sámiid Ædnan" in 1980 of which the title is in; and the chorus had some lyrics in Sami.

    What about France 2022 where they sent a song in Breton?

  • @ian.blackwoodgwent.walesgb5668

    I don't mind which language, it's the quality of the song that counts. Three of my all time favourites are non English language songs
    Finland 1977 🇫🇮
    Norway 🇳🇴 1982 ( should have won)
    Estonia 🇪🇪 2012
    There have been other fantastic non English language songs ,too many to list here...

    I will be an exception here, but as much as I love to hear more variety of languages being used, I am really against the opinion everyone should sing in their official language. Some languages are more melodic than others, some great artists prefer other languages than their national one, some countries have more options to choose from than the others... So I think everyone should remain free to choose whatever language(s) they wanna sing in. And I especially love when someone can appreciate, learn and sing in a different language than their own or English.❤
