    Many years ago Faber Castell came out with a gelato activity set. It showed a bunch of techniques. One was to mix with air dry clay, or blend with acrylic gesso or clear gel medium or chop and add to spray bottle. I think there were also texture pastes.

    This color selection is just gorgeous and the landscape turned out beautiful. Those of us who love the art nouveau color trend need to stock up on all the great supplies coming up before the next fad takes over.
    I've only used the brighter gelatos but they perform much better on gesso than on bare paper. But these translucent colors seem to do okay on the sketchbook page as is. Maybe it's a creamier formula? Would love to see if there's a noticeable difference on a gessoed surface.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Рік тому +2

      They are quite a lot softer and waxier than the Neocolor II's, and don't lay down or wash out as evenly as them. Also because they're fatter and softer, you can't get very precise marks with them, unlike the Neocolor II's which you can sharpen. Neocolor II's are more lightfast and pigmented too, so overall they're fairly different.

      @@helencryer Good evening, Helen! Oh, that’s annoying. 😒 The small ones, tips actually, used with the plastic tools are also too soft? Another idea I just had, maybe a stupid one: those makeup brushes used to blend foundation/concealer. Some people blend really thick makeup using these brushes. I hope you’ll find a solution! Personally, I hate when my fingers are dirty because I make the most incredible mess around me. 😅

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Рік тому +1

      Yes, unfortunately I've tried those too - the sponge tips kind of move around, and pull off the handles if you're trying to blend anything but a small area. Also the foam isn't easy to clean on those, so you'd have to use a lot of them. I did a whole picture using the Gelato firm blender in my latest video yesterday, and I loved it! It also cleaned really well in between colours, because the foam is so dense.
      Hadn't thought about a brush, but I suspect the oil pastels texture will be too 'draggy' for them. Wondering if I'm willing to sacrifice my foundation brush to try it though!!

    I think this is the first time I’ve seen the translucent Gelatos, although they may have been in a large set I used to have, and just not labeled as such. I can definitely see the appeal - that color selection is beautiful! About 5 years ago I had a set of 64 Gelatos, and I think they were already old when I received them, even though I had purchased directly from Faber-Castell, because they were not creamy at all. I didn’t use them much and returned to them after several years, and oddly, a waxy/oily substance had leached out of all of them. I don’t mean a wax bloom like you sometimes see on Neopastels or Neocolor II crayons, but they were actually oozing large amounts of this synthetic wax type material, and the rest of the stick was hard, and I threw them away. I don’t know if it was a freak occurrence, or if they really don’t have a good shelf life. They were stored in normal temps and humidity level. In any case, for me I think Gelatos are one of those products which are fun to play with, but don’t really have a place in my art-making. They are fairly versatile, yet I have many other materials which can do all the things these can do. I always end up giving things like this to my kids because I know that if I don’t they will just sit around. I think if you were starting out from the point of having few art supplies, these might be a good option, if you could get them at a good price. I do like that they “dry” more than oil pastels. My understanding is that they were originally designed for paper artists - for card making, stenciling, etc., and were also adopted by art journal enthusiasts, mainly for washes and stenciling and abstract areas of color.

      @helencryer  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm, that's interesting, thank you. I definitely only intend them as a fun sketchbook product, and am not interested in getting more colours, but I did really enjoy using them. I don't have anything else like them - my oil pastels aren't water soluble (except for one set of Mungyo's I have that I didn't like the texture of), and Neocolor II's are not as loose and light at these. What materials do you have that can do what these do? I'd definitely be interested in them.

    • @Anonymoi
      @Anonymoi Рік тому

      @@helencryer What I meant to say was that these are versatile but that I have supplies which can each do one or some of the things which Gelatos can do. I’m not sure if there is anything exactly like them. (Part of the problem is also that I just have so many art supplies that I can’t really think of a way to introduce them… it doesn’t feel like there is a natural use for them for me, but if I didn’t have those other supplies, maybe these would be a good “all in one” to start with.) There are the Neocolor IIs but it is true they are not just like these (although I sometimes watch Sandi too and I followed her approach and took the paper off and broke them so they’re smaller, and I can apply the broad side of them.) I have Unison soft pastels which are water-soluble although not marketed as such… when washed out with water on paper, they are pretty well “fixed” despite starting out as extremely powdery. I also have another brand of harder pastels, Charvin, which are specifically marketed as water-soluble. (I think pretty much all “chalk” pastels are water-soluble, anyway.) Then there are the Inktense blocks, and regular watercolor and gouache, and various oil pastel brands. Some people like the Portfolio brand water-soluble oil pastels, but I have not tried those. (I have tried mineral spirits with regular oil pastels, but that’s certainly not as user friendly.) I definitely see the appeal of the Gelatos, in theory. I buy my kids tempera paint sticks (Kwikstix brand) and they have a set of 36 which have some beautiful less “kid-like” colors. These look a lot like Gelatos but are not marketed as water-soluble and they dry quickly. Last summer they had them on vacation and I used them on watercolor paper and realized that they gave the look of chunky oil pastels, yet they actually dry. They layer extremely well and there was something really fun about using them loosely and going in with a wet brush, or my fingers. (For that matter Faber Castell sells “gel crayons” for kids, which are great, but don’t come in the range of colors Gelatos do.) It’s just that for me, usually, I would have to consciously find a time to use something like that instead of my other supplies, when I have limited time, if that makes sense.

    • @Anonymoi
      @Anonymoi Рік тому +1

      I just wanted to add that I just went looking for my kids’ set of Faber Castell “Gel Sticks,” which are basically the kids version of Gelatos. They are almost identical but F-C says they’re not formulated to be as lightfast, and they only come in basic colors. Our set is probably 4 years old, and it has no signs of wax leaching or other deterioration, and they are still soft. I think the set of Gelatos I had must have either been very old when they shipped to me, or perhaps they had been exposed to extreme temperatures. Generally Faber-Castell makes high quality art supplies and I wouldn’t expect they would formulate something which would deteriorate so badly and so quickly.

I’ve seen Sandy Hester use gelatos, but I don’t think I’ve watched anyone else use them. They’re a neat supply to have on hand! I still haven’t gotten into any mediums that require blending… the little sponges do make the process of blending look more manageable for me personally (since the finger thing really bothers me a lot, I just hate that feeling of rubbing the paper texture and the medium on my fingers).

      Haha - I was already wondering about putting together a watercolour palette along these lines, including some pastels. In fact I've also been looking at getting some empty paint tubes and mixing some of my own paints up!
      I'm really pleased to have found that foam block - it's the best thing I've tried by far, so far.

      Apparently, the eggish shape beauty blenders work really well for blending pastels & and gelatos, too

    In my experience gelatos are fun but only Posca pens goes on top. Nothing really sticks. It's been ages since I've used mine but so I've don't really remember if any are much more opaque than these. I don't think so. I've never tried them in the book you have there. I should try because I have them in different sizes. The paper doesn't take too much water but that's not always needed. Anyways beautiful colors in this set of yours.

      Oh, that interesting about the opacity, thanks. Although they didn't move as well on the Art Creations paper, I actually really enjoyed using it, and it left a kind of 'sketched' appearance afterwards. I threw quite a lot of water on this one, and it stood up to it pretty well.

    I bought a couple of these, odd names by the way, but when I got my hands on Prima's water soluble oil crayons, I never went back.

    You can also rub them on a hard surface then add water on the palette and use them like a watercolour

      Thanks! I didn't realise at the time of making the video though, that they are harder to get hold of now. I was very late to the party on these!

    Love the colors of this set but the "tone" and such of the video is very monotone and hard to keep watching. Hopefully this is taken as constructive criticism. I really do love the colors!!

      Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! Yes, I'm pretty aware my videos aren't particularly exciting, and that my presentation style is quite low key, but that's how I just naturally seem to make videos - I'm not sure I'd know how to change that! Luckily there seem to be enough people who don't mind it, and keep returning.

      @@helencryerI really enjoyed the video and the pace of it. It was natural and I find your voice relaxing. I find most videos on UA-cam exhausting to watch as there’s way too much talking and not enough pauses.
