    Loved your presentation!!! By the way, I bought a box of “complete” Gelatos about 4 years ago (they came in a very pretty Design Memory Craft box, with a water brush & 2 sponges which neither I used), then I had 2 deaths very close together. Needless to say, I put them away in storage in a sealed plastic box away from dust, light and moisture. It is not til a few hours ago that I retrieved the set of Gelatos & thought I would use them as crayons. To my horror the only 6 Gelatos I had used before storing them away, they were all crumbly & definitely not useful as crayons. I stumbled on your site and found that their only true use for my Gelatos now are as tools for watercolours. My problem: in your opinion/experience, am I likely to ever experience the Gelatos as crayons again? Can you recommend any method to restore their creaminess as crayons or should I resign myself that they are just very expensive water colour tools? Your feedback is much appreciated. Best wishes. 😊🌈

      Hi Anna, thanks for your comment. I'm not sure if there is a way to re-bind Gelatos - due to their complicated composition it would be difficult to take an educated guess. I have heard of people complaining that their crayons 'leak' moisture over time, regardless of storage. This shows as beading of clear liquid droplets on top of the crayon. It results in poor pigment consistency/laydown and I supect will eventually lead to the situation you are in.
      I have fired an email over to Faber Castell to query this, if and when I get a response I will let you know under this comment. Sorry I can't be of more help right now!

      I did, but it wasn’t very helpful. They didn’t really offer any real solutions to the problem, other than stating the conditions they should be kept in for storage 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Oooo. Love that dragon. Sooo pretty. So what would be the difference between say.....a gelato and like an inktense or another kind of water activated pencil?

    • @TheColourCave
      @TheColourCave  5 років тому +2

      Apart from the obvious, you can’t compare them really. I’d say a gelato is more like an oil pastel, Inktense are made from India ink and behave more like a ‘strong’ watercolour.

    • @TheColourCave
      @TheColourCave  5 років тому +2

      Absolutely. They are perfect for backgrounds!
      You can use Krylon fixative - make sure you get the workable variety. That lets you seal the background then you can letter over the top.
      I use the Winsor & Newton fixative, just because it’s easy to buy in the UK. Hope this helps!

    I love your upbeat attitude as well as your voice & (Scottish?) accent. In the U.S., we have a brand of these called KINGART that is much better packaged, more affordable, but a little less pigmented. The textured grip and shape feel great in the hand and the tops snap on to the ends so they don't get lost. They provide a great case to keep them in as well!

    I got my self a set of the hobbycraft water soluble crayons a long while back to see if I liked the concept of the gelato type medium. I was cautious because I’m not a fan of pastels or oil pastels. I found for me they were too like oil pastels for me, to messy and hard to put things where you want them. I also found that when using them in a watercolour style that they just didn’t complete with actual watercolour. So the crayons were consigned to a box in the back of the cupboard, because even my son didn’t like the feel of them and how they behaved. Just not an item for me it seems!

    • @TheColourCave
      @TheColourCave  5 років тому +1

      They aren’t for everyone. Strangely, I don’t really like oil pastels either, but I like using the gelatos dry. It’s okay not to like mediums, though- at least you tried!

      My daughter treated me to a set of polychromos. They should be here by Friday. I added these in the cart. I think that I got a set of 12 for $10. However I don't think I'm going to keep them. I was watching laartistino and she uses the chalk ones that you scrape off and then rub around but you also can't control where that goes either. Before the polychromos get here I got a deal on a set of 24 prismacolors. I don't like those either. They seem to be a step up from Crayola twistables.

  • @nokiot9
    @nokiot9 2 роки тому

    You’d think for what these cost they’d be fully fugitive in water. They leave behind pretty heavy ghosting where your original stroke is. Marbu makes some that are half the price, twice the size, more colors, but they don’t fully melt either with water. Gelatos cost more than neocolor 2 do and almost all of that value is in the plastic lipstick case it’s in.

    I wanted to add some comments about the product itself but first I would like to say thank you for showing the different uses you have discovered. I am sure people will appreciate the information. In general, I really do not recommend Faber-Castell Gelatos - the pigmentation is lacking, they are not lightfast, they are overpriced, and they can’t even be layered easily. If you want a comparable but better product, I would check out the Tim Holtz Distress Crayons. They have more pigment, eventually do dry so may be layered more easily, and in general are a better product. The Neocolor II sticks are professional grade, much more lightfast, highly pigmented, and are definitely superior to Gelatos. If you are creating works of art to sell or even for your own display, use professional/artist grade materials. Art made from Gelatos will not last. I also find that Gelatos can be blotchy and some colors do not dissolve well in water; the other products I mentioned perform much better.
