Today, we revisit one of our favorite cars... of 2011. The Scion FRS took the ehthusiast world by storm, and can now be spotted at car meets, track days, and on the roads all over the world. Now, we take to the track with an FRS tarted up by Toyota Racing Development's Accessories division - Авто та транспорт
If you're not racing, or hitting straight-aways all day long, this car is fast and agile enough. The steering and control is superb for a car under $50,000. I love it.
Agreed. Although I'm stuck in LA most of the time next to even sedans that could beat me in a 1/4 mile, once I go through some good twisties, the car shines big time. Especially when I had a camaro SS trying to keep with me in a long stretch of turns. I have springs and some sticky nittos on the factory wheels and the SS couldn't stay on me
WF Gaming I am not a fan of the electronic power steering. feels fake and has a super small turning radius.
even though it's slow, Matt still kept up with that SS, in my opinion that more exciting than driving high hp car that's a boat in the turns.

Watching him catch the SS in every braking zone reminds me of Initial D when the AE86 takes on higher horespowered cars.
That goes for any underpowered lightweight vehicle that handles well, my Honda Fit takes on 350hp cars in corners and they always pull away in the straight..

The FR-S/GT86/BRZ is this generation's S Chassis except lighter, more powerful, and with a larger engine bay for potential swaps. I bet this chassis is going to be the most common platform for drift builds in the next few years once all the s13/s14s have been destroyed (Dai Yoshihara, Ryan Tuerck, Tony Angelo, and Ken Gushi are already using it in Formula D).

Toyota are fools for not offering a 2.5 liter version of the FA or a factory turbo engine option for these cars, it's a waste of this amazing chassis they built. That said, on the road in stock form, they're QUICK if you carry your momentum and use the rev band, if not fast. On a big wide open road course they're going to lack the cajones. Apparently a header, exhaust, and a tune is worth 40-50 HP on these things too.
As for comparing it against the Fiesta ST, or anything else really, here's what the GT86 cars give you: a true sport's car driving position with your butt on the pavement and the car rotating around your right hip. Between that and the sublime steering, these things really deserve a serious, serious consideration from any driver.
High compression NA engines aren't necessarily fragile. Look at all the boosted S2000s out there. Over the next few years, the power potential and reliability of the GT86 motor will be revealed.
kkthxk People aren't breaking the rocker arms, but some are killing the motors. There is a thread tracking it and it is always a bad install or bad tune. Full Blown Motorsports tried blowing up the engine with just straight power and 600+whp wouldn't do it on the stock block. Many people have 400+whp daily drivers on stock blocks with plenty of miles to prove you can make power, but honestly, you only need 300whp to embarrass much "faster" cars as long as you have enough rubber to keep up.

I once sat on a BRZ on a dealership, and I remember the shifter being ridiculously short. It was the shortest throw I had ever felt. It was awesome lol

People don't understand that this is the successor of the AE86. They weren't looking into HP gains with this car, but more so with the handling. It was meant to tackle courses like touges and such.
The Smoking Tire that driver mod really helps with this review in showing the strengths and weaknesses of the frs. Keep up the awesome videos!

I don't know about a short throw but the stock FRS shifter is one of the best I've ever felt aside from 90's Miatas.

This series of back to back videos has been great. This is what you wish car mags could do, give you real time feed back of the cars all on the same track. I really like One Takes and hope y'all keep doing them.
Matt, how much room is there in the engine bay say for a bigger engine? Like a step up in size of the same flat four. We can always hope that Toyota realizes that they can punch above their weight class if the car has more guts since we know it is a great platform.
As an owner of the TOYOTA GT86!!!!! for about 6 months, have to say I love the car, state the obvious could do with more power but I like it because it's just about able to go 10/10's at all times no matter what kind of road you're on, which is a point Just about every journalist/web reviewer/expert has made. Wish people would bore off saying "I'd rather buy a 7 year old M3", go off and buy one then! Completely agree with Matt saying its a good car to get used to RWD as it's my first and getting used to it it wet weather and such. Love the videos, keep the owner tuned videos coming, cheers from England.
+MrWillrobinson I agree. And i love that comment about buying a 7 year old M3....cause if you know about the maintenance on an old BMW you know how horrible it can be. THose cars are money pits

this car was built to be an affordable sports car. if they put a bigger motor the price would be much more and then no body would buy them. theres plenty of expensive powerful sports cars out there if you have the money. this is a sports car for college students or anyone on a tight budget that wants a cool looking car...
empty pockets You could just get a used 350z for a cheap price . Or just a new 370z for just a little more than the Toyota 86 . Both the 350z and 370z offer wayyy more than the 86 .
Except they aren't that much quicker in a straight line because they're heavy as shit and they handle like boats compared to the 86.
I agree but what wouldn't hurt is offering a bigger engine/supercharger/turbo as a option. ~300HP would be perfect for this car.

I never heard anyone call a bmw 3 series slow, the I raced one the other day and it was a race. The frs brz is not slow. It’s not as fast as the crazy expensive cars you drive but it’s still fast enough for poor people like me.
Haha,well said! It's more fun to be able to wring it out even on public roads and not get in trouble, than to drive a high HP car and always be looking over your shoulder.
@@eatsleepworkcars1786 plus it’s a really light car so if ur ever going overly fast you can stop slow down surprisingly fast haven’t timed it but the brakes are amazing
In NZ where the Holden Commodore version of the Chevy SS is prevalent. You find the same style of driving. Slow in the braking zone and through the corners, then power down on the straight. It's hilarious to see the same phenomenon happening on the other side of the world.

This is just like the original AE86. To me it's a platform to build on and improve your driving skills. If you can get to the point where you get every once of speed out of it, your driving skills have improved greatly. Yes, I would want more power, but so did I with the AE86. Turbo from the factory please Toyota, Please!!
They have definitely figured out some great FI options for the car. I have a Jackson Racing supercharger kit on mine BRZ and it feels fantastic. You should try one with one of their kits on, I think you would enjoy it a lot.
Matt would you say the steering feedback is better on this than say a Miata or RX8?

This car was never intended to be fast in stock form. That was never the purpose of the car.

Hi Matt thanks for taking us along on the track to really see what the fr-s is like. Scion had an autocross thing in Sacramento about a year ago but they were all autos which kinda ruined the experience for me.
I know you've driven the 370z in the past but I just read Nissan has tweaked it for 2015 with new suspension tuning and some interior mods (they added an oil cooler back in 2012). For msrp of 30 grand it seems like a one of a kind in affordable sports cars right now, but about 5 grand more than fr-s. Is it worth it?

I followed the development of this car by Toyota/Subaru since it was just a drawing and seem to remember they did do a twin turbo version early on. I kind of get the feeling (or maybe it's wishful thinking) that this first version was just to "test the market" with more high performance options to come later if the market responded well to it.
You should turn the head rest around, they are design to be put on backwards for helmets..
Sam Fonzo they should do a better job of explaining that. It's a neat feature.
Is the trd package really worth the money
I own a German Toyota GT86 which has some different specs than the Scion FR-S has in the US.
And I love the car as a daily driver and I'm looking forward to next year, finally dismissing the horrible Prius tires and replace them with Continental Sportcontact 5.
Sometimes I also miss some power or torque but it also helps people getting used to the car more easily.
Matt you need to come drive my brz when I get my kraftwerks supercharger kit installed :) 290hp to the wheels with RCE suspension and 245/40/18 - 120 treadwear tires should give you some entertainment

Hey Matt, I recently spent a weekend driving both the FRS and the Fiesta ST. I am curious about your comment about the Fiesta being faster when shopping for Thads car. I felt like the FiST is faster, it was a riot. But you can imagine my surprise when i looked over the stats afterwords and the FRS has a faster claimed 0-60 time. Can you elaborate on that comment?
Benjamin Springli all about the launch. 0-60 runs are a very specific thing, and a RWD car has the advantage here because of weight transfer. In the real world (or a 30-100 run) the Fiesta ST will smoke the FRS every time.

Would you prefer this FRS or the WRX you recently used to compare to the fiesta?
Jordan Wallace I'm not a very big fan of the WRX, and I have little use for the AWD system, so for the same money I'd rather an FRS
After hearing everything you and others have said about this fiesta st, I really want to test drive one. I currently have a tuned brz which is nice but it would be fun to compare the two. I test drove the new wrx but was unsure of how I felt about it.
Jordan Wallace the WRX is a very good car, but emotionally, it did nothing for me. Even after driving it for a week, I had no connection to the car. The Fiesta ST is much more fun.
In your opinion, since you have now driven the Frs multiple times. Do you feel the Fiesta ST is enough of a difference in fun from a frs to justify a trade if you owned a frs?
Jordan Wallace not on performance alone; but if you can also use the practicality of the ST in terms of hauling people and stuff, yes. And i don't know about where you live, but here in LA, Fiesta ST's lease out for like $75/month cheaper than the FRS

I own a 2014 - thank you for the pads toyota and subaru.
A few months in, i had a custom 94 octane tune done, threw on hawk plus pads ( plan to do lines and dot 4 fluid ) - i ripped out about 60 lbs from the rear, put on pilot super sport tires, and here I am. Car is a bunch of fun, but its not very fast, the tune helps it pull a bit more, should have the tune feel i have out of the box.. I'd love to see Matt do a review on a turbo - not a built one, vs super charger, or a v8 swap.. please do a v8 swap 86!! Yep, car needs more power, but damn its fun. My buddies fiesta, same price, tuned - eats my frs for dinner every time.
Dude it's tempting to trade my frs for something with more power but I don't have as much fun in them haha. I just have Eibach springs, a muffler delete that kills 28 pounds and sounds nice, and a mishimoto intake. JUST...NEEDS...MORE...POWER!

Definitely not complaining about the free entertainment you're providing, but I'm curious. Do you guys always use the camera's mic, or do you use external mics sometimes, too?
Scott Ryman on most of our "produced" videos, the pretty ones, we have multiple audio sources. I wear a mic to talk, there is a mic on the exhaust, and each camera has its own external mic for the drive-by shots. But in the cases where I'm out by myself doing "one take" videos, there's no reason to over complicate my life so I just use 2 gopros and that's it.

I drove this, the fiesta st and the fiat 500 abarth back to back... earlier that day I drove the new gti... the frs was the least fun on regular roads... looked nice, great steering, pretty good gearbox but SLOW... felt so slow compared to everything else... and they had the nerve to raise the price... who would pay the 26-27-28k that they are trying to get for these now... if it had the power of the fiesta st I would buy it in a heartbeat... FiST has power everywhere... it... just... PULLS!
does car have oil cooler and oil temp gauge?
Not from the factory. There's an oil temp PID that you can access over OBDII though.
Matt, what did you prefer and why? The BMW 228 or this? You seemed to have a really good time driving this (your racing lines were great), but you also liked the interior and engine of the 228 better.
BMW came to 38k (i believe you said), the FRS must be 5k less? Is the BMW worth the extra money?
achuck4321 Yeah, i'd go with the 228i M-Sport for $38k over the fully loaded TRD FR-S for $33k.
TheSmokingTire And what if you would spend that money making the FR-S faster? Would you still chose the 228 over it? Everybody seems to love the GT86, and I bet the BMW has a great chassis too, so if speed was good on the GT86, would that make a difference?

TheSmokingTire What about in terms of chassis? Do you think the 228i is better than the FRS? Whenever I see pictures of the two together the 2 series just seems bigger, taller, with a higher center of gravity. The driving position also felt higher and more regular car-like than the FRS.
Asphalt You say that, but Matt had problem sitting in the FRS (heading hitting the roof), but had plenty of room in the 228. The greenhouse may be higher in the BMW, but i'm sure the seating position is pretty low
Funny to think you'd take the Fiesta over a Mustang, though I would to. But I defiantly think the Eco-boost Mustang will make 500 HP on stock internals, which I'm thinking will make it out perform its V8 brother for less money, and it'll be probably be more fuel efficient.
Not Mustang guy myself, but I'm keen to see where the tuning scene takes it.
I think all the negativity that surrounds the FRS is due to its price which I think is about 2K more than its worth and nobody is really talking about it. Everyone wants more performance instead. Its really not an expensive car in the first place but we would forgive so much for that 2 grand. The engine is probably bullet proof at its low output and I see spec series in its future. Anyone else? BTW I would never drive one of those slow boxer piles. With my S2K I get performance, reliability, and community.

There's a big hole in the powerband on this car. Subaru decided to add fuel on the midrange which is why it's so sluggish getting up on the revs. If it was tuned for less fuel where it doesn't need it to flatten the A/F ratio, it would probably have a noticeable difference.
+smuckersuncrustablez Add fuel on the mid range? This motor is sluggish getting up to high revs b/c it is a small displacement non turbo motor with very little torque. It has nothing to do with the tuning of the car.

I will say as a owner is does lack in performance but for day to day driving it honestly isn't bad. For an auto cross event or track day I'd say bolt ons tune and mabe a lower final drive to get up to speed faster would help a bunch. If not boost it and this car will be better then a new mustang or any stage 3 tuned fiesta st. This car is good but looking for great power plus handling I'd go with a wrx
Better steering than a Lotus Exige? Matt I am sure youve driven one, I've only been able to drive an SW20 MR2 and that had amazing Steering.

It's Toyota's "hip" brand here in the US. It's basically the higher trim GT86 without some specific features and the Scion badging instead of Toyota.

Ahh, okay, it is the TRD FRS - I was thinking that the Scion people try and be sneaky and put sticky tires on the FRS for the track day so journos would say "Wow! This car has so much grip!!!" and then continue to sell to the public with the eco tires from the Prius.
Ferrari had a bit of a spat with Chris Harris because he called them out for this sort of thing at press event track days.
So long as they acknowledge that this is a special trim of the car, I'm okay with it.
Alexander Finlay no, Toyota doesn't do that at all. When they put the crappy standard tires on the car, they would encourage drifting. Now, they put the sticky optional (dealer-installed) tires on the car, and the guy couldn't wait to tell me about how grippy they make the car.

good car for a young driver that doesn't know how to handle crazy power yet.
While the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S twins are pretty "gutless", according to many journalists, they are actually a snip quicker than the Fiesta ST. According to C&D, the BRZ is slightly quicker both from 0-60 and 0-100 (BRZ: 0-60 in 6.3 seconds; 0-100 in 16.4 vs. 6.7/17.0 in the Fiesta ST), as well as through the quarter mile. Yes, in the mid-rpm range and during most daily-drive scenarios, the boosted, torque-laden ST will be much quicker, but in a drag race I think it would come down to the driver.
Joe Olson are you buying a FRS or ST to go drag racing?
I honestly can't see why they don't use the WRX motor in this, it's literally the same engine + a turbo. The engine bay in these cars are huge too, people have swapped in LS motors for god's sake. (And yes, those are actually small engines, but the size of a 2L 4 banger? I'm not so sure)
I read somewehere it's because the manifold wont fit, as the engine sits a bit lower in the BRZ. It can't be that hard to fabricate a manifold that fits, though! If I had the resources, I would instantly try to make a swap kit for the WRX engine, using as many OEM parts as possible. I bet it would sell quite often.
HolySteel yeah if you're a manufacturer and can do / build literally anything, "won't fit" isn't a very good excuse. If a manufacturer as small as Aston Martin can find a way to shove that 6L V12 in the front of the Vantage, Toyota can get a turbo into that massive engine bay of the 86

The Fa20DIT found in the newer Wrx simply doesn't fit in the Brz because of its size lol. The turbo on the fa20dit, I believe, is mounted close towards the bottom of the engine bay. Since the Brz is too low, for the motor in the wrx, it would be impossible to swap the fa20dit into the Brz. I agree with the aforementioned user that for the 86s', supercharging is the way to go along with sticky tires and supporting mods. I honestly don't feel like the car is underpowered. Coming into corners, I hardly ever have to brake and I keep up with over 95% of people that drive in the canyons. Also, this car isn't marketed like an American car- all straight line power and etc. It's an economy car lol. 99% of buyers don't get that point- it's a cheap RWD Japanese economy car.
Why did they have you test it at Big Willow and not the Streets of Willow. In your other videos (at the streets) there were more powerful cars at the streets.

Perhaps there should be more drivin instructors for some people. How they can evaluate a car when you can't drive it on the performance limit?
So I watched a few of these videos and have yet to see the sponsored by Ford on the screen. Is it just me or did everything get compared to the Fiesta ST? I'm sure it is a hoot, but unless I'm wrong he is comparing a tuned car to OEM offerings, not apples to apples at that point.
Id pass on the exhaust ,its loud yea but not a great note to it. Id take silence over 2hp.
have they figured it out how to turbo these? you're not looking in the right places if you haven't found one yet. there's a few pushing more than 500hp

Also all those false 500 hp crawford kits require major rebuilds, this engine can't take much more than 300 whp before you start having issues. My car has the JRSC, oil cooler, uels and an axle back and it's push 280 whp and any more and it make require a build

+851995STARGATE wow, I hope I don't run into those issues. Im going on 2 years now pushing 255 on a conservative tune with only issues being my clutch and motor mounts. Nothing major really. I don't primarily focus on big company cars, like the cars that belong Crawford and evassive, because i know they just show their cars at their best to get you to buy their products. I read up on other forum members cars. There have been a lot of positive feedback from owners with stock blocks in the 300-400 range. Now 400+hp? Not so much, unless built of course. I'm planning on stepping up to 350 by this year.

Just went to check this car out at the dealership yesterday. Love the car except this series edition only come in an ugly Yellow.
the TRD exaust and intake... I think it adds about 0.0 horsepower to the wheels.
Wish Matt would do something new other than track stuff, maybe some fan cars or something.

You are maybe right, just watching track cars i dont think it shows anything specific about the cars, other then a slower or faster lap, but overall we don't rly see anything, i will keep watching as i think Mat is a good guy but i would like to see more about cars.

These are production road vehicles that Matt is getting a feel for on a track. This was a once a year MPG Track Day event.
Matt has done plenty of in-depth reviews of cars on both the road and track.

This series of videos, where Matt drives11 cars in a single day back to back on the same track allows him to deliver a comparative commentary that isn't possible if he's only driving one car that day. They may not be what you specifically want from the channel, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have value.
I guess, though id rather have some more fox mustang or readers cars or a review, as he did this all in a day it gives him a fresh view of these cars and how they compare, guess you cant please everyone all the time:).

I heard something about Subaru putting a 306hp version of the WRX engine in the BRZ and adding an AWD option. No word yet if this is a JDM only car or not. But the excuse "it won't fit" is total bullshit, if a small manufacture like Aston Martin can put a 6.0L V12 in something small like the Vantage then a big automaker like Subaru can afford to put the WRX engine in it. The FRS and BRZ are the same car. I just like the styling on the BRZ more
Was Zack there? I would like to see his take on the same cars Matt drove. Seeing the other drivers on the track seems like a huge waste. Let them do road test and get some real drivers in those cars.

It was odd when I drove one of these. It has 200hp and it's lighter than my 2014 Si coupe. But my Si feels faster even though it isn't.
Probably well enough that the SS didn't give you the point by, huh? I've been behind /that car/ so many times on back roads. Corvettes and Mustangs that crawl around the corners and then WOT through whatever strait they can. People can't appreciate maintaining momentum enough.
As someone who has been in that position on track, honestly, it really isn't. I find that a car capable of catching higher power cars at the corners have to hold back and once they are allowed to pass, they will be gone in 2 corners.
What a BRZ really needs is a crawford engine...
You could buy a BMW M4 for the price of the Crawford Toyobaru. No thanks.
Doppelkupplung You could also buy an LS1 Vette and spray it and be faster than most turboed FRSes as for the price of the mods and still keep the FRS as a reliable daily with warranty.
