Why Would Anybody Buy A Scion FR-S?

  • Today I finally drive the 6 speed manual Scion FR-S!
    This one costs half as much as my Nismo 370Z....So, is it an awesome budget sportscar?
    I've always liked the Scion FR-S but never really thought it was worth buying brand new. Unfortunately after a few years the sales didn't do to well for the car after the initial rush of enthusiast bought it. The lack of acceleration is the biggest downfall, especially on a car costing $27,000!!
    But used for around $17,000? Now that sounds more like it!..... Or does it?

      That's so true. The FRS/BRZ/86 is a lot of fun and I don't look at it as being slow at all. It's almost too quick for me but that's because I live in a high traffic city. Anything with more than 300 hp is just too much in heavy traffic imo. I love my FRS it's like a go cart from hell.

    The younger generation is so jaded on horsepower...when I was a young man, if a car was able to pull off a sub 8 second 0-60 it was considered pretty darn quick. And the BRZ in any of its variants is a sub 7 second 0-60. Not slow at all. Make no mistake, it will get you a ticket any time you want one lol. Having said all that, yes some additional power would be nice, but I could say that about any car I have ever owned including my long gone 98 corvette which was a seriously quick car for its time. So, if you are THAT jaded, dont buy one...but it really is a car you can live with long term. Its quick enough, economical to operate, and fun to drive, and comfortable enough to be a do it all daily driver. Subaru did a nice job with the compromises they made. Regardless of what the detractors might say about it, it is a wonderful car.

      I actually just bought an FRS and after owning one and test driving the automatics. I got the manual and it's pretty quick, it's not a muscle car. But don't be mislead by what people say. The FRS/BR/86 is pretty quick and not slow what so ever! It's fast enough for me, it sounds good, and it handles very well. I've wanted to get one since they were introduced. I use to have a second gen tC and the FRS is big step up out of that car for sure. I like the Z but they're a little more expensive plus I live in Seattle so I can't really drive it more than 80 mph on rare occasions.

      As great looking as this car is, and considering how low it's power is compared to modern sports cars, I'd say it's the perfect candidate for a project car. Maybe Scion produced it with less than impressive power to encourage tuners to modify it's performance. It has perfect design in my opinion.

      Call me crazy, but i honestly think this is one of the best looking cars of the last decade. The designers got it right and there isn't a bad line on it. Being that it lacks any real power, it's a great candidate for a project car. Maybe Scion was encouraging performance modifications with it's low factory power? I'm seriously considering getting one of these and turning it into a real sports car.

    I had a 370. I got rid of a 370. Power isn't the full story. You can't see out of the thing. Being 6ft with the seat as low as it would go I NEVER saw anything but the roof liner out of the rear view mirror. The seats are horrible, the metal bar from the headrest stabbing you in the back gets old fast. Never in my two+ years of owning that car could I get comfortable. The entertainment/nav was junk, it was unnecessarily load with road noise from all directions. Best of luck figuring out the fuel gauge too. Want to see miles remaining & outside temp at the same time? Too bad. Clunky doors, bad seats, noise noise noise made it one of the worst cars I've owned. This coming from a guy who drove an S2000 for 5 years then a S2000 CR for 4 years. Drove the FRS... Reminded me of the difference between a sports car and a muscle car like the 370. Power... no matter how much cannot make a good car and the 370 is a perfect example. The 86 platform is the better car. I regret not getting one back then.

    An OFT tune, headers and E85 is what most us 86 owners do to solve the power issue. All under $1000 and your making at least 30hp over stock. Your still not blown away by the power, but the car definitely has a much better acceleration with those simple mods.

    • @rayzala1393
      @rayzala1393 7 років тому +4

      In Canada unfortunately we don't have E85..funny because we are one of the world's largest suppliers of corn. So forced induction is the only route really.

    • @fatboy19831
      @fatboy19831 7 років тому

      Even without E85 you will still get 18 hp on 93 and about 25 lb ft torque at 4000 rpm. And you lose 25 pounds off the front wheels. No more torque dip and far more top end. Money well spent. 25 lb-ft torque boost with 25 pounds less weight is a nice push for the FRS.

      Letsroll, You can also take out the headliner, passenger seats and carpet then the Z will only weigh 250 pounds more than the FRS. You will also throw off the weight balance even more shifting more weight to the front of the car. You still have to mod the steering, and gearbox and somehow move the drivers seat back. Then maybe, just maybe the Z will handle more like a true sports car and not like a short wheelbase slammed sedan that it truly is..

    I rather drive a car at it's full potential and this is why I bought my GT86 over the Nissan. Nissan has power, but it feels like a boat. It is really heavy. Like the saying goes "rather drive a slow car fast, than having a fast car driving slow" The handling is great on the 86. Once I added my UEL headers and my exhaust it gets rid of that torque dip and the power is more consistent. The Aftermarket on this is car is amazing. There's a lot of improvement you can do. But every car has it's pros and cons. Like I tell people just buy a car that makes you happy. Both cars are amazing. Well I can definitely relate to this video. Just sold my 2015 FRS for a 2016 Nismo tech in red. I couldn't afford a Z period when I was 20 so I feel like it was the perfect choice at the time. Absolutely no complaints other than the fact that you really have to push it to it's limit in order to get it moving on the highway. I'll never forget the lightweight, agile, and nimble handling though. Tbh, if you invest in coils, wider tires and wheels, full exhaust and supercharger...you'll end up with a car that's better than the Z in every way.

Some praise it for handlibg and looks and relative practicality. Some complain about the torque dip. Some have said it's perfect and more power would spoil it, some have said it could use another 20hp. The common denominator amongst pretty much all reviewers though, is that it handles well and put a smile on your face

    If you're buying this car for "put you in your seat" acceleration then you are a moron anyways. I got one because it's a beautiful car, it's comfortable, sounds good with aftermarket exhaust, and is pretty "quick" and fun to drive while still being an economical daily driver since I commute 50 miles a day. If I wanted to race everyone on the street I wouldn't have bought this car. Luckily I have cbr 600 for that and will pull on any mid range sports car out there from a Corvette down. Have reasonable expectations. For it's price it's worth the money as long as you aren't using it for the wrong reasons.

  • @coreytyler8217
    @coreytyler8217 6 років тому +1

    I really like this review even after watching almost hundreds of others but WHY does everyone have to constantly talk about the acceleration? I understand that it is definitely a factor in the build of the vehicle but I don't think that's what the FR-S is about. I've had three cars with four cylinder engines and I've driven MANY other vehicles. Four cylinder engines are the most rewarding to me. With a v8, you have so much engine you can only use just a bit of without a drag strip. Same with a v6. With a 4, you can almost use the entire capacity of the engine within legal limits. That's what makes it fun.

  • @shawnb50
    @shawnb50 5 років тому +2

    he never even revved it past 5k rpm why would he say he was trying to accelerate hard when everyone knows the peak torque is above 6000 rpm its like shifting a motorcycle at 7k... why would you call that accelerating hard when the redline is so much higher and the next gear shift will be put back in the powerband if you shift at redline

    I'm very torn between the 370z and the 86. they are both beautiful looking cars, the 370z has the acceleration I really crave but a 2 seater is impractical for me (and not to mention the insurance.) The 86 on the otherhand is much more practical and I would say is better as a sporty daily driver, but of course the acceleration is lacking. of course I could always slap a turbo on the bad boy in a couple years ;)

  • @apathy6973

  • @dachanist

    I sold cars for a few years. My used car manager would choose me to demo drive the sports/muscle cars for his clients because I knew how to drift them without going overboard. I always brought the clients back a little wobbly with a big smile on their face. I've driven:
    S2k, Civic Si, Integra type R
    FRS/FRSauto/BRZ
    RX7 FB, FC, FCauto, RX8, NC mx5
    WRX, STI
    370z, G35auto, G37auto, r32 gtr with upgraded turbo
    Camaro 2SS
    Mustang Gt 5.0 coupe and convertible
    others I can't recall atm
    I chose an 2014 FRS with 60k km (38k miles)for $14kCAD/$11kUSD. So far I've chosen not to put a header on it or increase the final drive since it's primary function is as a fun, economical, daily driver. I could put a catless on it but then it would smell like gas. The previous owner lowered it a little and put wide summers on rims. It's only ankle height but with winter tires on the stock rims it worked fine for me this winter in Southern Ontario (think Michigan weather). I've driven many base 370s at my old Nissan dealership. Buying the Nismo made no sense to any of us. You want the sport package for $2k over the base model. It gives you better brakes and an LSD. The FRS has a torsen standard. Both cars will drift a tight corner with ease. I enjoyed all the cars in that list, and I was close to choosing a used Cayman for under 20kUSD. The money wasn't a huge issue and financing wasn't needed. Ultimately there isn't a wrong answer here unless you get a car in bad condition because you have stretched your budget too far. Protip, the 2013 has a bad valve spring recall that was made worse by the shitty techs who botched the job half the time. 2014 is fine. Other than that, the car is Corolla reliable and has an unlocked ECU. If you care, the Open Flash Tablet will give you a little more midrange and let you disable the traction control (peddle dance mode). Header, Open Flash Tablet and e85 will get you a good 20% more power for $2gs with labor. Without E85 its only about 10% for the same cost. The FRS sells for less than the BRZ and has a stiffer rear suspension. It costs about the same as a comparable year and mileage Camry.

      Cool man. They are all really fun cars for sure! After owning a Sport 370z and then the Nismo. From an owners perspective, the Nismo was a night and day difference in how connected it felt. And they hold value way better. So I actually lost more money on my sport mode then my Nismo. SO have more money tied into it, but you'll end up selling it for barely any loss compared to the normal cars. Fun times with this!

    Here is a thought.. How tall are you..? In my perspective you might be around 5'9"-5'10".. For me (6'3") whenever I sit in a 370z i have to put the seat all the way back and I still don't have any headroom plus the back of the seat rubs on the back of the plastic, not built for tall people.. The Genesis when it first came out I was so hyped about it but when I got the chance I was disappointed due to I can't fit at all due to the moonroof as standard, the seat doesn't go all the way to the floor as the FRS/BRZ/86.. The FRS/BRZ doesn't have any moonroof, it has standard seats that resemble like the 370z's recaros, and with a few tweaks from the world of aftermarket, it can regain its torquey feel with a unequal length header and exhaust and much better tires; better grip and lose some more weight in the process.. All in all said The FRS/BRZ/86 can be a much better car than the other two if you put time into it. Sure the others will be faster but if you are out there just to have fun power isn't everything..

    It really is a shame ppl are not more aware of what the 86 platforms provide as a drivers car, it was never about flat out 0-60 times or racing in a straight line... this car has a near perfect performance to weight ratio with a amazing handling chassis. It’s about holding top speed while taking turns and still being in control of the car and not crashing within 2 seconds of going into a turn even when not pushing it compared to other “sports” cars. If you want straight line performance get a mustang aka crowd killer or any car with high power that still can’t turn worth a damn! I down graded from 07 mustang GT (300 hp) to a eclipse GT (265 HP) to a FRS in wanting of better handling and I’ve never wanted to get in my car and jus drive for the hell of it so much before.

    But 370z and Porsche Cayman is the same. It's called torque. That lack of shove is torque. A very common trait in NA engines and especially in Boxer engines. I have a over 100k Cayman GTS (check my channel), and it STILL suffers from the same trait. No torque. But I like it that way, still pulling faster than a M3 but with smooth and less punch. Not like the 86 has so significant lack of troque compared to a 370 or a 981. It's "fine" on public roads.
    I am thinking of getting an FRS as a project car or just a beater for drift days or track days.
    People just need to chill on the power and torque. The car is fine as it is. I rather have this exist than a 20 to 30 percent more expensive car with 50 more power and torque.
