    I've been a special cutting tool makers for many years now and his technique is ok but there is a few reservations. There is a left side and a right side to the chain. You wanna start with the proper size file for your chain. Smaller saws use smaller files. Never allow your chain to get as dull as the one depicted. Slow steady strokes and no waver in the angle...up, down or sideways. Also, you'll be able to see a nice clean, straight tooth edge on top. The burr or hairline along the cutting edge is what you should see when the tooth is sharp. You want all the teeth to be the same length, ideally. You won't necessarily file or grind each tooth the same amount since some teeth have more wear than others. There may be one or two teeth .010" or .015" shorter than the rest, but that should be fine. They will wear evenly eventually...or maybe not take as much on the shorter teeth during future sharpenings. Cheers from a long time wood chuck.

    I gotta say this! Thanks for the straight forward video. This is pretty much how I did it in the dealer shop for on-the-saw sharpening. Costs less and effective. Maybe there should be a rule that some guys have to at least have posted one "How-To" video of his own before he can do thumbs down and say how a posted video is all wrong! I've seen guys who cut trees all day throw some strokes on a chain saw sitting on the tailgate and get back to making money, throwing streams of shredded wood! Pretty much the way you did it here! Practice makes better too. Thanks Again!

    Anybody looking at this, go to 5:11, look at the cutter on the right hand side of the screen. See that brunet area on the cutter, this has to be all filed away before you get a sharp cutter.

    It helps if you tighten the chain prior to sharpening, don't get your file at home depot go to a place that sells Stihl or Husquavarna they'll have a much better file some lawn mower shops sell them. Make sure your file is level with the tooth not pointing up or down. The top of the tooth does the cutting not the point. hold the file with the handle and on the front of the file nice and easy keeping the file as steady as possible push forward only not back do it as many times as need til sharp.

    Helpful, thanks New American Friend. New to chainsaws, just have an electric model with an Oregon chain set for light garden jobs. Though my sharpening set came with an angle guide I found that the file naturally adopted the correct angle and I could see/feel the increased sharpness after filing. If you know your way around tools: sharpening chisels etc, then it's fairly instinctive. Just tried some light cutting: all I really need, about 3 inch timber and it's like new again. People will always naysay and contradict, don't pay any heed. Your method works! Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video.

  • @SCH76.
    @SCH76. 10 років тому +9

    I am afraid four strokes won't clean up all the worn area on the front of those cutters. Plus, your file is pretty dull. Use a file guide, level and top angle at 35 degrees. When that is accomplished, don't forget to lower your depth guages.

    A guy below commented the following n here is my 2 cents on his 2 cents.
    You said " there is no way you went out and cut anything after that."
    Well that's almost the same way I sharpen my Stihl saw. I try n sharpen each time I fill up the bar oil tank. (I use this as a memory aid since I am almost 67 now n often cant remember what I ate for breakfast)....
    My Difference:
    a. I do use a flat Stihl angle guid on my rat tail file and
    b. I take 5 swipes on each of my teeth, this guy takes 4.
    AND
    after sharpening it is easily noticeable how much better my saw cuts with out question.
    ALSO when you get the chain sharpened professionally, not only is it pricy & I need to drop it off n pick it up, the pro grinds so much steel off each tooth vs me sharpening it by hand - my chain last easy 200-300% longer when I sharpen it by hand......

    • @LaneSandelin
      @LaneSandelin 4 роки тому +2

      Amen brother

    • @CaptainFaffer
      @CaptainFaffer 4 роки тому +3

      There's no set rule for the number of swipes you need.. if I want to just put the edge back on mine then one or two swipes is enough. If I've hit a nail in the wood then it may need 10 swipes on every tooth. Part of the skill of chain sharpening is taking note of what it needs, and always start with the shortest tooth on the chain.

    A word to the wise ... I'm not all that great about sharpening a chain saw, but I have sharpened them many times. I use safety gloves for one reason, and one reason only. That file has slipped on me before and the tooth I was filing has torn the thumb on the "driving" hand all to shreds!! It might be pretty dull to cut wood, but it's still pretty sharp to cut flesh!! BE CAREFUL!!!!!

    This works great for a while but eventually you have to knock down that portion of the chain that doesn't cut the wood but just clears the chip. If you don't it ends up being higher then the cutting portion of the chain and your saw won't work properly. I like your videos. Thanks.

  • @deernutOO
    @deernutOO 10 років тому +4

    The general procedure shown is good, but in no way shape or form are the teeth being sharpened with the file.
    The teeth are very dull and in bad shape, and will require many more filings with the file held straight (two hands gripping both ends firmly) and not making a curved stroke.
    Shows how to file a chain but does not show how to sharpen.

A couple good tips for a well sharpened saw is the final strokes look for a thin metal sliver at the outer edge of the tooth . It will be small and you can bend it and it will break off when you have reached this point you can't get it no sharper and also lightly file the drags

    Tighten your chain first so it doesn't flop around when you file it. What about the rakers? When you remove metal from the angled teeth the rakers which act as a depth guide are then too high. The saw will only cut on the tip of the bar.

      Atticus Lamoreaux: Aha ha, yeah it should, I think it should be running 'full noise' with the chain brake on, just to give you some good soothing sounds to work away to.

    But seriously, how is this the top search result for "sharpen a chainsaw"? And who the hell makes an instructional video telling others how to do something when they don't know for sure what they are doing themselves. My mind is blown.
    Watch the stihl video or something if you want to know how to sharpen a chain.

    Go watch Buckin Billy Ray if you really need to learn how to sharpen a saw chain!!
    I doubt this chain is much sharper than when he started!

    Thanks for taking the time to film and explain that. I think I'll start with a good spray of Marvel Mystery Oil before starting to sharpen. Probably a good time for a quick clean-up at the covered drive shaft while at it. Thanks again.
