Now this is how it should be explained, plain, simple, to the point, no crazy music, or long drawn out introductions and no story telling in between, wish I could like this 5 more times over.
Agreed. It is so irritating to click on a video when all you want are clear instructions and get 30 minutes of rambling off-topic crap and next to no actual substance. Good job with this video!
One of the best instructional videos I've ever seen on youtube! No frills, great camera angles, and 50 years of lessons learned the hard way condensed into a 9-minute video so dummies like me can do it the right way from the start... Take note youtube sharers, THIS is what we want!!
I've run chainsaws, falling here in B.C. for the past 25 years and this is the first video on filing a saw that I've watched that covered all the important bases without any gizmos or useless info confusing the subject. Well done.
Could not agree more. I'm a casual cutter....I cut only my own firewood. I've been filing my chains like this for 30+ yrs. and this is the first video I've seen explaining this simple method of sharpening a saw chain.
I use mostly hand powered tools, I do my own firewood so it's good and dry when it goes in the stove, and occasionally use an old Echo I got new in '86. Correctly sharpened chains means never straining the motor, or the chain, or Me, which means I've yet to amputate anything. I've demonstrated to others how I sharpen chains, but I can't explain and demonstrate at the same time - no way. I listen to these tutorials because I know it true, and hearing it explained in great detail is somehow comforting, relaxing.
I've been renovating a barn for the past 4 years and of all the videos I've needed to learn from, this is by far the best for a lot of reasons. It's such a simple, beautifully shot video with a teacher that obviously knows what he's doing. What a pleasure to learn from him. Thank You!
I have watched several chainsaw sharpening videos and this was the absolute best. Every aspect of the sharpening process was covered which included very specific yet understandable steps. Thank you!
I firmly believe that every other channel on UA-cam needs to come watch this video to see the proper way to make a "How To" video. This may sound silly but after watching you do this, and never having done it myself before, I honestly feel like an expert. Thank you!!!
I worked with a shipwright back in the 80's - I learned that Shipwrights can do anything! Fix, Fabricate, Repair, Finish, Paint, Restore... They are a combination of Carpenter, Cabinet maker, Cooper, Blacksmith, Rigger and a little lumberjack when needed. Thankyou sir for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge... Great tutorial... 👍
As a retired Millwright/Machinist I can say with certainty that this is the best video I have ever watched by a gentleman who knows what he’s at. I always get my best results in the vise also. I never thought about tipping the chain saw over to get the other side of the chain. Thanks for that tip. You sir are a master!
This guy really knows how to use a file. When I was an apprentice in a machine shop, everyone knows that the first thing you must master is how to file. Great video; including camera work and great teacher. Thanks a lot. jrf
Best sharpening video I have seen ! Having spent 4 years in a sharpening shop that was founded in 1936, & only fixing chainsaws, I enjoyed this video. Covers all the points we were taught, down to removing the burr. (We were told to tap the cutter with a vertical stroke, using the end of the wooden file handle. This would fold the burr down over the cutting edge, and break it off.) We would often have 20 or 30 chains to sharpen first up in the morning, and did them all by hand. The owner of the shop said that no other way would get the right finish on the cutting edge.
haha I'll telll you why its crap , is became every cutter needs to be filled to same size and filled to an exact angle. Free hand filling from my 25 years experience using a chainsaw daily as a proffesional arborist tells me most people can't get the exact angle without a file guide. Stihl, Oregon, and Husqcvarna make fike guides for a reason.
Best chain sharpening video ever! Thanks very kindly for the clear, concise, thorough detail. I am just learning myself and this was very helpful. All the best. Subscribed!
I have looked at a ton of informational UA-cam videos and yours is absolutely one of the best! Very clear andconcise without a bunch of superfluous information because the presenter likes to hear himself talk. Thanks!
GREAT VIDEO !! I have been sharpening for about a year now and have watched hundreds of videos about sharpening, maintenance, etc. I finally got the hang of it and do pretty well. It all came down to doing it by hand, having the correct file and raker gauge, and most importantly feel. You nailed it in your video and validated what it took me a long time to learn. I wish I had seen this video first before all the rest. Experience is a great teacher and it looks like you have a lot of that. I just wish I could have learned from your experience instead of my trial and error. Thank you.

Thank you for posting this! Have to agree with what everyone’s saying: This is one of, if not the best chain sharpening video to watch. Whether it’s chainsaws, chisels, planes or knives, everyone seems to have an opinion on how to do it or what the latest, greatest gadget for doing it is. There’s no substitute for experience and not only do I wish I had a fraction of this gentleman’s, but his knowledge, skill, eye for detail and patience of a professional should be the benchmark every novice or veteran forester/woodworker, alike, aspire to. Thanks so much again. This really helped me.
You are a very good teacher. I have been sharpening my chains for over 40 years and I never understood the 'why' of taking that front rounded guide on a tooth down. So Thanks very much for your excellent video.

The man delivered.l’ve just been given an electric sharpener, seen this tutorial, about to get some new files! As a 75yr.old once again l’ve learnt how to do it right. Thanks old mate.John.Tasmania.
Outstanding explanation & demonstration on how to properly sharpen a chain & achieve proper raker height. How to properly hold the file & make the cut was excellent. Measuring the raker, removing the gauge first, make the cut, check it again & simply round off the raker's corner for the final touch. This is by far the best tutorial I have seen on this subject. Thank you... :-)
This is by a mile the best chainsaw sharpening video there is. I've watched countless others, both pro and am, and I'm convinced that they have never sharpened a chainsaw before. This vid is for everyone - Watch It!
Wow! I actually know how to sharpen a chainsaw now thank you. You're the only one. The close-ups were amazing you were excellent in your explanation thank you again. I have watched 20 or more videos. Yours is the only one that actually explains it. Thank you . I had to buy three new chainsaw chain because I have not learned how to sharpen them yet. I'll give it a whirl
I subscribed within seconds. You’ve gained a new avid follower based on your intro alone. Many men these days are missing techniques and especially missing concise, old time teachers like yourself. You should be very proud, you emanate a level of knowledge that our world is losing rapidly.
I use to see my dad do this all the time sadly he passed before he taught me how to do it now I'm learning myself I have a love for chainsaws and trying to learn all I can great video thank you
I just want to tell you that this video is extremely educational. I have used a file a few times to sharpen a chainsaw but I honestly feel like I could be a novice and never have touched a chainsaw blade or file and be able to come away with a perfectly sharp and safe chainsaw blade. Thank you for your time.
@@gittyupalice96 same here, but I see where this guy is coming from. If you're not in the workforce you wont see them, especially not on social media lol
By far the best chain saw sharpening guidance/instruction I have ever seen. As soon as I get me one of those chain saws, I will be ready to sharpen it.

Gotta say....I'm impressed. Clear,. Concise and to the point. Wasn't expecting such a well done demonstration and explanation as this. Well done sir. Now make a few videos on the other things i have on my todo list. Seeing as you're so good at this 😂
Stumbled across this video and instantly subscribed to the channel. You're better than any teacher or professor I ever had in school. Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos and share your knowledge in such a understandable and concise way.
The only thing I would add is that the line on the chain is a wear line that Stihl puts on their chains. Once you file to that line, the chains life is finished. That is the primary reason it is there, the angle is secondary.
Excellent. Well filmed (the guy was professional enough to use a tripod), straight to the point, no fancy soundtrack or side stories, great presentation, and knew what he was talking about.

Very informative video. I've been using a chainsaw for years (before youtube) to cut firewood to heat our house and I learned some things here. Well presented. Thank you !
I’ve been using chainsaws off and on for 30 years casually. I’m no pro. But I’ve never heard or seen the level of detail and solid tips - and the reasons why they work, before this video. Thank you for sharing. I think I finally get it
This video really helped me so thank you! Every other person who has attempted to show me lacked basic conversation skills and left out crucial information. I am still learning all the skills required for my tree business, so any detailed information with example truly helps!
I've never been able to sharpen a chain and have it to work correctly again. Sitting in line with the bar and looking down made all the difference! I'll need to practace to get all the chips the same size but it cuts as fast as it did new. Thank you for this video!
Thank you uncle, you explain clearly, step by step and methodically. Your lens man is also professional. I have watched other videos as well but found this one to be twelve star rating.
Mr Sauzedde , thanks very much for explaining this , you,re the first guy I,ve seen sharpen a chain in a vice , & dress the guides also , I,m going to try this , as I believe it will make all the difference in getting the angles & fine tolerances required right , Best Regards from central england .
Sir, u made teeth sharpening an art, that just using some simple quality tools, and patience u can sharpen your own blades. Through 32 years of chainsawing, I always had my blades sharpened at the dealer. But the cost every coupla yrs would creep upwards. Not real happy lately of the quality of their sharpening, but with this video, gonna try this myself. What a great teacher...to the point easy to undetstand, no fluff....thank u!!
BRILLIANT! Bloody Brilliant. Great video for anyone needing to know or needing to get back to basics, saw up-side down sharpening too, I've Never seen that. Yep your right it can be done. Thank you Very Much! Great voice and well spoken Video also. Cheers!
Thank you. Just great to meet another old school guy. I started using a chain saw in 1973. Proper size round file by hand! The only way to do it! Would love to shake your hand and sit down and jaw for awhile. Two thumbs up brother!
For a different chain. The "chisel" that he describes are different between some chains. It is listed on the box when you buy the chain... or experts like him just look at it.
Best saw chain sharpening video ever. Love the angle marks on the vice...very handy. Out with the protractor, sharpie and ruler tonight. Master Shipwright and and a naturally gifted teacher. Thanks for the lesson.
Excellent video. I'm surrounded by woods so i've been running power saws for over 15 years, mainly to feed my woodstove, but I'm always learning new tricks. One thing i picked up recently, and I noticed in this video, is the little hump that is left down in the gullet (the ridge of metal left on the side of the file away from the cutting surface). If you file that down your saw will cut much faster and run more efficiently because the chips are more likely to fly out and not get caught up in the cut. It feels like you're ruining your nicely sharpened chain the first few times you do it but you'll notice a change immediately. Buckin Billy Ray has a great video on YT about this.
I have watched a number of saw chain sharpening videos and this is the best one I have seen. I’m a former logger and this is almost exactly how I did it. The main differences are that I didn’t turn the saw upside down as fuel can leak out and I didn’t carry a stump vise around in the woods. I would just cut an inch to two into s stump and let the cut be the vise. I also did like to rotate the file away from the tooth as that helped to keep the file in the proper location and not have it creep above the tooth. With practice, a slight file rotation is easy to do and I do it now without even thinking about it.
UpnorthHere No. A fraction of the file should project above the tooth to set the cutting edge angle, but the file should not move/creep upward on the stroke. The file should move only axially, not radially on the stroke. If it creeps upward, it has the risk of jumping out of the tooth and rounding over the cutting edge.
Really well done. Very specific, Clear. Got all the nuances and fine details explained. Easy to understand. Both the video and audio quality were excellent. Great close-up focus. Thank you!.
A very nice and instructive video. Such a great instructor. There is this some kind of calmness on some of these older American gentlemen, which make them perfect for this kind of educational stuff. I just wish that I can be as calm and instructive to my own grand children one day. Thanks you.
Fantastic explanation of how to sharpen the cutters on the chain AND you addressed the depth guage as well , awesome job an great video work too ! This is how educational videos should be done ! Even though I myself am well aware of the pros and cons of chainsaw chains and the good and bad examples of what to do and what not to do I compliment you on this fine video , it's straight to the point and you took time to explain things so everyone can understand it all !!
Now this is how it should be explained, plain, simple, to the point, no crazy music, or long drawn out introductions and no story telling in between, wish I could like this 5 more times over.

which often make it terrible uneven.
I have about 30 videos on chain sharpening this is by far the best I have seen
Well made, clear, concise, and just a general pleasure to watch!
David Greenwood a chainsaw has a bar and chain. A knife has a blade.
BRILLIANT! Bloody Brilliant.
Great video for anyone needing to know or needing to get back to basics, saw up-side down sharpening too, I've Never seen that.
Yep your right it can be done.
Thank you Very Much!
Great voice and well spoken Video also.
Cheers!
I know you've heard it, but thanks for no music. Effective description, clear camera work, clear audio. Two thumbs up.
That has to be one of the most intelligent ways of sharpening a cutting chain, in a vise! Praise the Good Lord for your wisdom.
Not sure, Phil, seems like keeping the chain on the saw and clamping the bar in the vise is more efficient.
Thank you. Just great to meet another old school guy. I started using a chain saw in 1973. Proper size round file by hand! The only way to do it!
Would love to shake your hand and sit down and jaw for awhile.
Two thumbs up brother!
excellent video! one question- 3 different angles...whats the purpose of the other 2 lower angles?
For a different chain. The "chisel" that he describes are different between some chains. It is listed on the box when you buy the chain... or experts like him just look at it.
Normally you would sharpen to 30 degrees for most cutting. 35 degrees for very hard or frozen wood. 10 degrees for ripping (cutting with the grain).
Best saw chain sharpening video ever. Love the angle marks on the vice...very handy. Out with the protractor, sharpie and ruler tonight. Master Shipwright and and a naturally gifted teacher. Thanks for the lesson.
dang very technical to sharpen a chain, seen couple of videos this by far is the best thanks
Kudos to the presenter. True born old time effective teaching of a practicable approach especially for anyone without contemporary tools.
He knows what he's doing
I just subscribed because this video was so calm, collected, and no BS. Thank you sir.
I use a marker pencil to mark the first link in the chain,
so I know when I'm through.
Thank you for the tutorial.
You should be able to tell just by looking at the tooth if it's been sharpened or not. No marker needed
With his method I believe inspection will allow one to know when it’s done. But a marker is probably the best way.
Theyre all supposed to be the same size. Thr marker is for the smallest tooth, then you file them all down to that size
As usual, good stuff. Simple craftsmanship.
I've watched a lot of how to sharpen a chainsaw chain videos. IMO, yours explains it the best
great video. i especially loved the 500 power glasses part. great information.
Best detailed chain saw blade sharpening video ever! Very detailed and explained why he was doing it the way it should be done. Thanks!
Excellent, common sense tutorial in sharpening a chainsaw. capt pete
Part of the file NEEDS to "creep above the tooth" to avoid too much hook.
Thank you from OzTralia for sharin your knowledge brother
Really well done. Very specific, Clear. Got all the nuances and fine details explained. Easy to understand. Both the video and audio quality were excellent. Great close-up focus. Thank you!.
Thanks that really helped in Hawaii there's a lot of trees an using the old method is good! Thank you
A very nice and instructive video. Such a great instructor. There is this some kind of calmness on some of these older American gentlemen, which make them perfect for this kind of educational stuff. I just wish that I can be as calm and instructive to my own grand children one day. Thanks you.
This is very useful, thank you very much.
