I think i would have discussed hook features and go over uses of these features. A good example is octopus hooks that reference the layed back eye style. This layed back eye allows the hook to sit straight with the line on a snell knot. I see far to many fishermen not using snells with these hooks and missing bites.
It will depend a bit on what kind of cover you're fishing around, but you can get away with a medium power rod with 20lb braid in light cover. If you're fishing dense vegetation or brushpiles, you'll want a medium-heavy or heavy power rod and 30lb+ line. Braid is generally best because it's strong, thin, and sensitive for detecting bites. My preferred braided line is Sufix 832 amzn.to/3NgPYc4 .
Hey Nat! Do you think it would be better to use Aberdeen hooks or small circle hooks to reduce gut hooking panfish? Anyone's advice is appreciated, great video!

@@dtps_champion6016 that's probably most of it honestly. It's hard to gauge what size to use for the water you're in. I've switched to larger circle hooks and it helps a lot with panfish, but I still gut hook almost every perch I catch. Very hard to balance
Size 8 or ideally size 10 circle hooks are your best bet. I would not suggest using large circle hooks for panfish as, unlike other hooks, circle hooks are actually more dangerous when over sized. They are meant to be swallowed then pulled back out to the fish’s lip where they catch. This means the hook has to slide out without turning and catching early. Large circle hooks relative to the fish being hooked increase the chance of the hook catching early and gut hooking the fish. J hooks are different because you should never allow the fish to swallow a J hook deeply and should manually set the hook. This means and over sized J hook, while probably less effective, is not more dangerous for the fish.

Perch are especially likely to swallow hooks and they'll regularly chomp down a chunk of nightcrawler intended for a catfish. No type of hook will completely eliminate gut-hooking but either of those techniques will help.
Hi Nat, sorry for the abundance of questions recently. In general, what lures are best to use during fall? I fish in murky water that isn't too deep. Also, I have been planning to buy a kayak for fishing in when spring rolls around. are inflatable kayaks safe to fish in?
What are you fishing for? The types of lures are going to vary depending on your target species. Some inflatable kayaks are intended for fishing, so they're very thick and resistant to being punctured by a hook or fish spine. Others are thin and could be seriously damaged by those, so I'd examine the toughness of the material before buying one.

@FishingwithNat I know that a jig and plastic paddletail or grub can go a long way, but for some reason, the fish in my waters just do not seem to find the soft plastics attractive. I have never caught a fish with a paddle tail and only managed 2 perch on grub style soft plastics while jigging near the bottom. Also, whenever I use a jig and plastic I always end up losing that lure basically on the first day because it gets stuck on the bottom. It has gotten so bad that I used up 2-3 wire leaders, 2 soft plastics and a spinnerblade in a single fishing session, leaving my tacklebox empty of soft plastics. Despite this, I understand how effective a simple jig and plastic can be.
@@ImRand0m OK, I'd say the next best thing that works well for both of those species would be an inline spinner (small for perch, large for pike) or a crankbait. If you lose those though, they tend to cost twice what a jig and paddletail would cost.
My dad always taught me to use treble hooks with cat fishing because he uses chicken liver as bait. I see a lot of videos saying circle hooks are the best because they self set and are safer for the fish. Are treble hooks still fine for baits like that though?
Treble hooks will work, especially if you're keeping the catfish. But circle hooks are much better because they can actually be swallowed and still pull back out of the throat and hook the fish in the corner of the mouth. They are the best type of hook to use for any type of catfish.
@@Darthluke7 Thanks. I think cut bait (pieces of fresh fish) is the best for catfish of all kinds. For bullheads and channel cats, I also have good luck with small pieces of cheese or nightcrawlers. Those are easier options compared to catching bait or preserving fresh fish pieces.

Also how do fish in general react to temps starting to drop this fall and is winter fishing more sparse? I live in northern MO almost Illinois so we have pretty cold winters

I have small ones that I throw for lots of small bass, or bigger frogs for big bass and the occasional pike, musky, or bowfin that slam those. I've never done it but I'm sure you could make your own weedless hooks with a couple of strands of thick fluoro/mono fishing line or steel wire, and maybe a dab of superglue near the hook eye.

If you're gut hooking panfish a lot you aren't setting properly or your hooks are too small

I catched 20 decent sized bass and 1 big one id say 1.5 Pounds on a bobber and worm with a barbed hook and also on a spincast zebco slingshot
