- This is it, folks. The end of the Sonic Marathon has arrived, and yeowzas, it's the longest review of them all! Seriously, I don't think I'll ever make a review as long as this one ever again, but a lot needs to be said about this particular game.
I've visited this game many times before. I wasn't exactly satisfied with the first review I made years ago. Since then, I've done a commentary, and I even did a full Let's Play of the game. Thoughts and perspectives have changed. But what exactly? Is this truly the worst of the worst? Are there any bright spots in this infamous title? Join me as I end the Sonic Marathon with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2006) for the Xbox 360.

Boom is a spin off.. not a main entry sonic game.
Sonic 06 IS a main title... a game to celebrate the 15TH ANNIVERSERY OF SONIC THE FUCKING HEDGEHOG!!
And that's what made 06 bad. It was to celebrate 15 years of this franchise.
+Kuma Gamer the 15th anniversary was just not good for Sonic, when your "best" games in 2006 are racing games, that's when you need to rethink your life choices.

At first glance, the decision may seem sensible. If Elise were in that castle, the Eggman couldn't get to her without hurting her...but that would make things even *worse*. While Eggman can be rash sometimes, he wouldn't go and do something so incredibly stupid. Why would he try to get to Elise when he could simply force her out, which is (surprise, surprise) what he does near the end of the last story?
Oh, and bonus points for Amy making the same stupid mistake in Silver's story.
I've already told you how Elise's complete lack of authority in the entire game makes her a pathetic excuse of a princess, but I'm going to briefly mention it to list it as another example of Sonic 2006 stupidity.

So Theory: The Reason that Sonic 06 is in Generations despite the many issues with that is because 06 is part of a completely different timeline that got merged when the Time Eater Struck. This also explains the Secret Rings reference and Music from Non-Canon Games.
No, the actual explanation is Generations could honestly not give less of a fuck about any kind of story or interesting writing. Having 06 representation in of itself doesn't bother me at all. It's the complete lack of writing and attention to detail that Generations is. That and it's so Goddamn overrated on top of it.

so, i bought this game as a joke birthday gift for a friend who'd recently gotten a ps3 a few years ago (don't worry, i also got her bayonetta, i'm not THAT cruel), and we played it together recently, and let me tell you, it was one HELL of a bonding experience. she knew next to nothing about the game so i loved getting to show off the extents to which this thing is broken. we relished in all the little victories like narrowly managing to avoid dying in the sand in that desert level with elise and the shield thing, or making it through that first super-speed section on the first try, all while laughing at how awful the damn game is. it was honestly RIDICULOUS amounts of fun for all the wrong reasons.
oh, and the highlights were definitely my trying to summarize the plot and us laughing at eggman's ballsack-looking head

Sega says that they slowed down the other characters to give emphasis on Sonic(even though he himself is pretty slow), but there's a serious problem with this BLAZE AND OMEGA ARE FASTER THAN SONIC! Also those gems in this game are some of the most game breaking objects I've ever seen in a game. You can infinitely fly ANYWHERE with the purple gem or slow down time with the red gem. Also this game could have been forgiven if Amy kissed Sonic instead of Elise, I seriously cringed when I saw that scene for the first time. Silver and Shadow have a bigger part of the story, while Sonic plays Mario.

This game almost killed the series and sort of did kill the idea of liking Sonic in a non ironic way for 14 years after it released, until the movie series started.

Mania thankfully turned out to be one of the best Sonic games in years, if not *ever!*
Forces on the other hand... The only thing that kept it from being as bad as *this* game, IMO, was the fact that it was at least technically stable and feature complete (barring the fact that Super Sonic was made DLC for no good reason)...
Take away the title and hide the appearance of sonic while showing the cinematic cut scenes and I probably would've mistaken this as a final fantasy game, or at least something along the lines of a square enix project.

Hell, I'd even tolerate, to a degree, the kinda weird Elise to Sonic thing if it was done in a more non-realistic art style (Side note: I would think that Sonic is most likely to remain single or, if built up and written well enough, maybe end up falling for Amy, even with her stalker-ish tendencies and actions).
It's a fair point to say that realism is probably not suited for something that is rooted in being unrealistic,
; IE, a super fast, blue hedgehog that defeats robots powered by little woodland creatures captured by an evil scientist that has a huge mustache and an egg-shaped body.

This game has no rules with Time Travel. Across all the people I’ve argued with (…admittedly aggressively) at least one guy said it follows “Sonic CD/Back to the Future logic” and another said it follows “Time Travel B logic”.
You know it’s bad when you can’t get a consistent explanation across those who defend this abomination of a story (worse than anything the Adventure Games or even what Pontac and Graff brought to the table.).
It’s supposedly set up as Sonic CD logic, but if it was… then Sonic would be wiped from existence for Saving Elise as events going back to Sonic and Co. finding that bunker and the news and Elise would have changed drastically. You can’t just change the rules with Time Travel. You have to keep it consistent and clear for the audience no matter what.
Hard to believe this mess is turning 10 years old.

kamtheking ktk Thing is... 06 Is hilariously bad... The plot is the stupidest thing ever, and you can't help but laugh at how bad the game is. It feels like a Sonic game though. Broken as fuck, but still a Sonic game, and it had good music. Boom is... so... boring. The plot is terrible, the combat is clunky and repetitive, the game runs HORRIBLY to a technical level, and it's just... I could feel my unborn kids dying inside of me out of BOREDOM. The hub world is empty, Sonic's top speed is slower than any random character doing a Sprint spell in whatever MMO, the music is BAD, and it's just... wow. 06 Was terrible, but it was fun-terrible. Boom is just terrible-terrible all arround. It has NOTHING good going for it. Watch Pro-Jared's review while we wait for Johnny, but I predict he'll say 06 is better. And again, nobody's saying 06 is good. It's just better. If anything, I heard the new cartoon is pretty funny/good ~

I think people should just be more considerate to Peach. Everyone is always insulting her and her character, but it is up to the writers whether or not she gets a role in the story. Anyway, you should check out Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, if you like RPGs. One of my favorites for sure.

I can't remember exactly, but I know you play as her where I think she tries to escape but can't or maybe it was to collect information. I just don't want to get your hopes up. There's always Mario 2 if you want to play as her and Super Paper Mario, but that game isn't as good as the other 2.

You messed up on the Time Travelling explanation. The Shadow that was locked up never escaped. The Shadow that sealed Mesphiles was the same Shadow from the present that went to the past, thus causing a Time Loop.
A Time Loop is when a person from the present of future causes a very important event in the past that comes from time travelling, however because their influence was so important in their original time line regardless, the future/present version of that being doesn't change anything that happened, since he was the cause of it in the first, regardless of where his past self is.
So basically, Shadow 10 years ago was still frozen, the Shadow that sealed Mesphiles was the Shadow in the present. Because the Present Shadow went back to the present, and his past self was left to grow, it created a Time Loop where Shadow is always destined to go back in time and do those important things.

Good thinking, personaly i think something else but if what are saying is true then shadows purpose was to go back in time to seal mephilis right? well he couldnt really do that the first time i think, i mean the cycle shouldve started somewhere so the very first time this happened shadow didnt come back immediately, that happened later. And since shadow had gone back in time, wouldnt that radicly change the future? since mephilis wouldve been roaming around the first time it happened when he didnt get sealed, and then if shadow would return the second time it happened when mephilis DID get sealed, the mephilis that didnt get sealed should vanish as soon as shadow goes back to seal mephilis for the very first time.

The prerendered cinematics are really nice to look at.
I love the design of Egg Cerberus, it's a huge robotic dog, it looks awesome.
Shadow roundhouse kicks Silver and I love it.
It introduced Silver, who is one of my favorite Sonic characters.
THE SOUNDTRACK IS BEAUTIFUL.

Gotta agree on the Egg Cerberus. I liked the design of most mechanical things in 06. The artstyle was a weird choice but it works well for the Eggman boss mechs even if they do feel a bit generic.

Not really. Johnny literally says that sonic's portion of the game is fun. Which is something you can choose to only play as. And why are you losers so worried about gen Zs liking the game? One tiny insignificant thing I will defend about this game is that Johnny kind of misunderstood the whole deal with Shadow sealing Mephiles. It's supposed to be a stable time loop. Shadow was the one who sealed Mephiles away because he went back in time to seal Mephiles away. And he went back in time to seal Mephiles away because he went back in time to seal Mephiles away. He never actually left Prison Island during his hibernation.
So yeah, still dumb, but not quite as dumb as Johnny thought.

Time travel in this game is portrayed like a physical travel, meaning that Shadow would be sleeping in SA2, then in S06 he would physically travel back in time, retaining everything from S06, do stuff and go back to the future. There would temporarely be two instsances of Shadow during SA2 and none (very possibly) during a brief part in S06. It's not something like Zero Escape and Steins Gate, where the concept of time travel was focused on only the consciousness being sent through time.

Read, the kind where the future, present and past are set in stone, _and_ you are able to go to the past and "exist twice" at the same time. ... ... ... Thiiis then of course begs the question why Sonic & crew don't get the idea to use time travel to have 700 Chaos Emeralds along with a hundred Sonics, Silvers and Shadows to annihilate the shit out of their foes, but hey.
... and of course they fucked this over _in its entirety_ by _then_ having the final cutscene of the game involving time travel which _DOES_ change the timeline, *_BUT HEY... WHATEVER..._*_ cries_

Thank you, someone finally said what I've meaning to for a while, and better too. I always honestly felt Johnny's explanation of Shadow sealing Mephiles to be, well, pretty fucking stupid, actually. Like you said, stable time loop. Its the only time I feel like the game is halfway competent in explaining time travel, but I digress.
