Back then it was cool to pretend you're a big deal, a guy that just have to play bad games, and fight characters from your bad games. Now? People try to find their own style, not just copy AVGN. He did technically talk about him a long while back in his playthrough of Super Mario Sunshine in the SGB channel, specifically the blue coin hunting videos where he answered fan questions with one of them asking about him.
Unleashed is good but Generations just wins it out for me. It actually feels like a platforming game and not a QTE/reactionary speedrun game. I just wish it ran smoother on my One X. Hopefully it runs at a solid 30fps on Series X
This is honestly the most refreshing take on Colors I’ve seen in years. It’s nice seeing a retrospective about it that doesn’t amount to “It’s not my Sonic and killed the franchise” in acknowledging its flaws. Glad it still holds up for you. I just wish the Unleashed circlejerk wasn’t this prominent when like you said, that game has massive consistency issues and Colors is just a better designed game in that regard.
"massive inconsistency issues" you mean like Colors being inconsistent about being a Sonic game or a 2D Mario rip-off game? Or do you mean like in the story of Colors being inconsistent between an adventure or a medicore sitcom for toddlers? Also the Unleashed daytime stages had the perfect difficulty curve, the first stages were easy and became more challenging but gradually and it felt satisfying being good at the mechanics. Colors on the other hand is inconsistent in it's difficulty, as in there's frankly no challenge even in the later stages plus being repetitive.
Island Boy. Difficulty isn't always an good thing if it's not design right. And while Unleashed has some good stages, it also has the most annoying & BS ones. May I remind you Eggmanland? And honestly, I don't give an crap about the difficulties in an video game as long as the game is fun.
Never thought I’d see the day. You finally gave this game the revisit that I feel it deserved. Thanks for another great vid Johnny. Glad to see you still like what has come to remain my favorite Sonic game. Even if you don’t like it as much as I still do, it’s nice to see some positivity.
I thought I was the only one the new Johnny Thumbnail Art just kinda came out of nowhere. Hate to be that person but I kinda prefer the old intro and the previous Johnny Art. Just an opinion.
Man, it's kinda disheartening that Colors has become the new "blacksheep" within the Sonic fandom. While I understand the game's flaws, I had a good time with it and it is one of my fondest childhood memories. I will always have a soft spot for this game
For what it's worth, Sonic Colors is a solid game with a decent story (even if that is only because the stories of games like Lost World and Forces are far worse). My biggest gripe with it boils down to the level design leaving a lot to be desired.
I remember watching that sonic colors review 10 years ago, I was in middle school, and now I am about to graduate college lol. Glad to see you are still making videos Johnny!
Sonic Colors has my absolute favorite soundtrack in the series. Nearly every piece of music is excellent, especially Starlight Carnival, Aquarium Park, and the final boss themes.
ZACH COBB 2006 to 2010 was the best era in terms of Sonic music, even games like Secret Rings, and Black Knight had killer music. Starting with Generations the music was either something we already heard, just bland, or just bad; case in point, Lost World and Sonic Forces. Then again everything from the “Dark age of Sonic” had a grand feeling. #MakeSonicMusicGreatAgain
IMO, Sonic’s Shuffle is a mess, but not even a likeable one. Amy Rose: Forget about Sonic, just look at my dress! I am a fan of the DreamCast, and if people like Sonic Shuffle, even if they don’t despise it at all, that’s fine. But I think The CC Network gave this and Sonic Lost World too much credit by putting them on his list of greatest Sonic games.
I’m glad I managed to turn myself around on this game and learned to just enjoy it for what it is, a simple Sonic game with some fun stages and a good soundtrack. Personally I think the Egg Shuttle is the best way to play the entire game, back to back acts with a good pace.
I think as a mature player, it’s easy to get some laughs out of the story ironically. I personally find humor in the fact that everyone in the story tends to acknowledge Sonic as unfunny, even himself at one point. But really, the story doesn’t strive for much, so is it really worth the effort to trash into it as opposed to something like Forces? Coming from someone who actually enjoys good stories in Sonic games and other media btw.
@@mcmistle9892 It is worth the effort because Colors did try to have a serious story going on with the Wisps being exploited by Eggman behind the happy theme park facade, like the Classic games had a subtle, serious story wirh Eggman exploiting the environment, but the lack of an interesting plot, jovial nature of the writing and characterization of ''tryhard comedian Sonic'' and ''idiot Eggman'' makes it hard for me to care about any of it. If you're gonna go the mile to put in a story between the gameplay make it worthwile, not just half ass it and then put in self aware jokes to laugh it away, it just comes off as flip floppy, insecure writing. Lost World's story gets criticized heavily for these reasons but I'm like ''uhh yea Colors story is exactly like that and people loved it so of course they're gonna do the same for the next games''. It certainly comes off as a downgrade after experiencing Unleashed story because Unleashed had the perfect balance between serious adventure and comedic lightheartedness, honestly Unleashed is the ideal when I think about what kind of story Sonic games should have, that or Black Knight.
Personally I think the downgrade from Unleashed’s scale and such is a good thing, as not every moment has to be a Final Hazard or Dark Gaia level threat, and it makes those types of moments stand out more and such. I will agree that Unleashed had the perfect tone(SA2 as well in my opinion), but I think it’s good to experiment with tones and such.
It's ok, dude/lady. Johnny said he'll do those reviews, sure, it's another 6-12 months, but come on! He'll get around to it! When Johnny says he'll do something, he usually tends to follow up on it. That's part of why most people tend to subscribe to him. That's one reason why I subscribed in the first place, dude/lady. It sucks having to wait an entire year for specific reviews, but he'll get around them, dude/lady. Johnny's not one to break promises.
@@ryancarberry2040 Wow, really? That's too bad. But, Johnny did say he'd be revisiting his old reviews next year. I guess it's his way of saying goodbye to his old self, and I guess it means the end of this era, and hello to this new era. He also said he's not getting rid of old reviews either, just revisiting them and having all his reviews under one umbrella, the "Vs." series. While it is indeed the end of an era, nothing lasts forever, dude/lady. It's sad to see SGB come to an end, but it had a long, great, and beloved and wonderful life. Those were good times, and we won't forget them anytime soon. Especially since back then, Johnny looked like Jon Favreau, with a Sonic hat. Hard to forget something that funny to watch. As long as Johnny keeps that charm in videos, he'll be fine. It sucks to see SGB end, and I was sad already when I found out the Super Best Friends Zaibatsu ended, but, for both SGB, and SBFZ, we'll always have the memories, and all the great times we had, watching them, messing around, and having fun. Matt McMuscles is still making videos, and Johnny, will still be making videos too, dude/lady. It's hard to say goodbye to something you love doing, but I guess Johnny just figured it was time to move on and make revisions and revisits of his older reviews. I'll still watch either way.
Aaaaand they've just announced Sonic Colors for Nintendo Switch, and looks like of all 3D Sonic games this one is the best suitable for Switch semi-portability.
It was always odd to me starting a few years back when fans started to "turn against" Colors. I went back to it recently myself and for me, these are my thoughts. I'm personally fine with the story direction they went with for this game. Unlike Lost World and Forces where it felt like there wasn't much of a clear direction, Colors just wants to be a Sonic and Tails VS Eggman story line with a bit more modern flare and that I'm fine with, and it never tries to be anything more than that. So I can get behind it. The script has certainly aged a lot. And I agree some jokes just go on far too long, it's more the small quick remarks though that add a bit more charm. I think an example for me in aquatic park boss, eggman announces a new sushi place, now with fish. And then tails after the boss says he goes to that join and goes "his cruelty knows no bounds". Those do still get a chuckle out of me that I didn't get with forces or lost world. It's the last sonic game I remember getting any kind of laugh with. There's issues with it but I think it's overall fine, more just later games apply these problems. As for the game play you don't get as much speed but I think I just personally have a more fun time in a normal play through through a whole zone than some of the other games, especially once all the wisps are added to spice things up. A bit more mario yes, But I prefer that to randomly getting hit by spikes or random bottemless pits that HD unleashed was plagued with on my revisit. And most of the design still holds up and I have just as much fun going through them back then as I do now. When the whole Unleashed Vs Colors debate comes in. I think you nailed it on the head. I think as well Colors is a much better game. While the day time levels as a whole are "better". They still are riddled with problems like its higher than normal difficulty and some stages like roof top run kind of out staying their welcome with how long they go on. But you have all the fluff on Unleashed, mainly the warehog that I will not go back to at all after beating the game and has aged horribly. Especially as a person who is a fan of character action games, the problems with those levels become worse and worse by the years. Meanwhile colors is one gameplay style that is far more consistently good throughout the whole adventure. Yes you get bigger highs in unelashed, but they are much shorter. Colors may not get the same highs but the quality is higher across the whole adventure. I close this off with this. I can only recommend Unleashed to the seasoned sonic fan, I think that game is too punishing for a newcomer and they have to sit through so much fluff to get to the REAL part of the game. Colors, I can recommend to anyone. You don't need to be a fan of the franchise to enjoy this one. You can enjoy it as a platformer and not just a sonic game. And there are not many games in the franchise I can say that I can do that with. And I think that says it all.
I respectfully disagree with the assessment that Unleashed daytime stages are too difficult, in my eyes the Unleashed daytime levels has the perfect difficulty curve for a Sonic game, the first few or three stages are pretty easy and they teach you the mechanics and level traps very well and also to learn to react to things on time, then the middle stages are gradually ramping up the challenges but in a fair way for you until the final two stages let go of the training wheels and test your abilities and everything you learned from the previous stages. It's great and it saved the game from being a mindless "hold boost to win" experience. Colors on the other hand is too easy and the difficulty curve is almost non existant, with stages feeling inconsistent in the challenges, a lot more automation than Unleashed and also repetitive, uninspired 2D blocky platforming. The Wisps don't do enough to spice up the experience and can sometimes even break up the pace (cube and hover). It also has the most underwhelming final stage and final boss I've ever seen in a mainline Sonic game. Speaking of story, the story in Unleashed had a great balance in serious adventure and comedic levity while Colors story or writing I should say goes way too much into the lighthearted, comedic territory for me to take anything in it seriously. While the Adventure era games story can lean too far into being dark/edgy Colors story goes too far in the other direction of being too jovial. Unleashed story was better in plot, writing and characterization of Sonic and co and it had a better balance of dark and lightheartedness. But that's just my opinion
@@hoodedman6579 First off the Werehog's combat has a lot of options and upgrades to work with it becomes fun when you utilize it well, second off the platfoming's is fine and doable. It's not great mind you but it's not terribly unplayable like people make it out to be, it's decent for what it's trying to do. I've had more frustrations with previous 3D Sonic games in some areas than I ever did with the Werehog. The problem for me is the dropping framerates and repetitive battle music that kills the beat em up experience a bit.
@@islandboy9381 The Adventure era games (Nor any of the games) leaned too heavy into being "dark and edgy". That's the appeal of the Sonic series was it taking itself seriously and having dark storylines and edgy characters. Unleashed is the bare minimum for what a Sonic story should strive for tone and content of the narrative wise, not the standard.
Must've been that one guy from the original Colors review who declared war on anyone who dared to say that Adventure 2 wasn't the most perfect masterpiece of all time, or that Colors was a good game.

Yo was that Mylezalker doing the intro?? That dude's great, he made me an intro that I use in some of my videos too. Great to see the guy getting some love.
Lost World got a PC release because it was built on an upgraded Generations engine - an engine made to flexible to multiple platforms. Colors was made exclusively for the Wii so the game will need to be completely rebuilt for a PC re-release. Also I’d imagine the textures and models need to be completely redone as their fidelity is much lower.
Actually (and take this with a grain of salt) Colors was originally going to be Gens for the Wii but was scrapped for what ever reason and refitted into Colors to fill in for 2010. It makes sense given Gens is a celebration of Sonic, development started in 2009 (The Level Poll), and that Sonic Team was split into 2 teams since 2006. Seriously, look at the main platforming games made by ST in the Wii Era, there is a distinctive pattern in console availability.
@@felixorozco4055 no, Sonic Colors had to be rebuilt so instead of rebuilding the game, they hacked it together. This made it “playable” but was an absolutely awful way to play it and I’d argue is worse than the original.
EGGMAN: This park is made out of a sense of remorse for my past transgressions, and is in no associated with any sort of evil plot or premeditated misdeeds. THE SIMPSONS: *L I A R*
@@funnysonicman No thanks. I don't want the characters to act out of place or dumbed down just to move the plot along, Amy to be a mary sue, or the plot to slow down to a crawl. That's pretty much why I dropped out of the comics because it just wasn't cool Sonic like in the 00's.
LOVE the new intro. first intro from tee lopes is more....loud, party-like if you could say. the second one is more calming, and this one is like a happy medium from the two
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Sonic colours is the most important game in the world for me. Terraria may be my favourite, but Colours will always be my most important. It was my childhood game.
I dream of the day we get an open world sonic game where you get to go anywhere and run across water and run up walls and collect “Chaos Emerald Pieces” scattered across the world or some shit. That would be so awesome :,) And is that a new intro theme?? 🔥🔥
Funny, Sonic Team kind of went for that with Knuckles gameplay in Adventure 1 and 2 and almost no one liked it, said it "doesn't belong" in a Sonic game. EDIT: check out Sonic Islands it has a more focused design on open world gameplay, Utopia's just a sandbox.
Personally, I would like something like the Sonic World from Sonic Jam. Small worlds, like the Knuckles stages in the adventure games, with multiple missions that you can do time trials in. Think like, find this character, collect a certain number of rings, run to an area within a time limit, stuff like that. I would also make it that there's maybe 10 ish missions per each world, maybe around 7 worlds. But, you only need to do 6 to get to the next world. Give Sonic the Spin Dash, Homing Attack, and a Wall Run that you activate like in Spiderman 2 on Gamecube, but operates like Lost World. I know this sounds weird, but it's just a concept. :)
@Drive Check. Or better yet, listen to Machiavelli, and pick who to please on a daily basis. Sure the ones who don't get catered to will get pissed, but if they don't give you money in the first place, then who cares what they think.
In this case, that's because this fandom is basically like 10 different fandoms smashed into one; someone who likes Mania may not like Colors, someone who likes Heroes may not like Sonic SatAM, someone who likes Sonic X may not like any of the games at all, there's just so much.
I'd have to disagree with your statement, because face it, no matter the quality of the game there will be fans who enjoy the game and like it, are you insisting that nobody was satisfied by Sonic Mania, or Sonic Colors, or just any Sonic game in general? This whole, "the fans are never satisfied" statement is bullshit and it needs to stop!
Played this game when I was 11 or 12 and I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite Sonic games. It was so much fun. Yes it had a lot of 2D but the level design was fun imo

@Excelsior !!! Its been a thing since Forces came out
Excelsior. No. I'm just saying that people have been overhating Colors way too much for no reason.
JJ C Not no reason.

I believe this game was the catalyst that led to nintendo fans essentially "adopting" the sonic franchise as one of their own.
Jared Watson It first happened with Heroes.
TrueSonicAdventureFan i think it was more sonic advance or sonic adventure 2 battle
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was the real catalyst
I figured that started with the Gamecube ports of the Adventure games, Heroes and the Advance Trilogy
Huh, I dunno about that man "Finally, Nintendo fans rejoice! Sonic is a full time Nintendo partner!"
**Sega releases Generations on PS3 and 360**
Man, it's kinda disheartening that Colors has become the new "blacksheep" within the Sonic fandom.
It's the game that got me into the series. And I agree that it was overrated at the time, but it's overhated now.
Me too. I am way too nostalgic for this game to really dislike it. I even have a soft spot for the comedy.
The Game is overhated because people don't like Wisps hijacking the series in later games. Even though that is not Colors fault.
This is the Sonic fanbase. What once was loved is now hated. Happened to Adventure 1 and 2 and nows Colors. Its a vicious cycle.
Why is it that whenever I see a clip of Johnny using the bathroom to shave, I see less of a UA-camr and more of a Dad?

Sonic Colors has my absolute favorite soundtrack in the series. Nearly every piece of music is excellent, especially Starlight Carnival, Aquarium Park, and the final boss themes.
Fletcher Reed Same, the soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece imo!
I personally prefer Unleashed’s soundtrack, But I really enjoyed this soundtrack as well
ZACH COBB 2006 to 2010 was the best era in terms of Sonic music, even games like Secret Rings, and Black Knight had killer music. Starting with Generations the music was either something we already heard, just bland, or just bad; case in point, Lost World and Sonic Forces. Then again everything from the “Dark age of Sonic” had a grand feeling.

I am a fan of the DreamCast, and if people like Sonic Shuffle, even if they don’t despise it at all, that’s fine. But I think The CC Network gave this and Sonic Lost World too much credit by putting them on his list of greatest Sonic games.
I fucking love Sonic Shuffle. The mini games and mechanics are so stupid but it’s a blast with friends. It’s a great drinking/party game for me lol.
Ah yes, the bad Mario Party ripoff
I’m glad I managed to turn myself around on this game and learned to just enjoy it for what it is, a simple Sonic game with some fun stages and a good soundtrack. Personally I think the Egg Shuttle is the best way to play the entire game, back to back acts with a good pace.
I really want the egg shuttle to return again.
So you just turned your brain off so you wouldn't have to worry about the writing? How the hell does that make the game fun?

@@shawnfields2369 You don't know? The old one's are SGB Reviews, and SGB is stopping after 2020 is over.
Wow that new artwork threw me off... and the fact you redo your Colors review added to the surprise! Awesome!
The Werehog did not "age horribly", it always sucked.
Hooded Man oh I agree, it’s always been bad, but time has just made that even more apparent

They're getting gradually better though.
Did this age poorly?
@@felixorozco4055 no, Sonic Colors had to be rebuilt so instead of rebuilding the game, they hacked it together. This made it “playable” but was an absolutely awful way to play it and I’d argue is worse than the original.

And is that a new intro theme??
