the fact that Unleashed got a lower score than 06 AND Free Riders insults me to this day Edit: 7+ years later, I've mellowed out and really don't care about it anymore. The review is still insanely bad tho, even at the time
Because 06 nearly killed the franchise and Unleashed laid the foundation for Generations and Colours which are credited as not just some of the best games in the franchise but were responsible for saving the franchise as well.
SuperLemons. Yeah I got to admit that's what makes it more of an insult. Unleashed is truly brought Sonic to the state he is in now. In that, he has much more going for him to redeem himself than he did before. The fact it's getting credited as a worse game than not only one of the worst sonic games, not ONLY one of the worst games ever made, but worse than the game that single handedly, almost completely, obliterated any hope of Sonic continuing as a franchise, is so wrong I cant begin to understand it.

I liked both. Honestly I thought I only liked day stages but after constantly replaying them, I felt burnt out and the night stages were just what I needed.
James Plata Then again, it IS his opinion. I don't even think eggmanland is a flaw. People think it's hard but I beat this game when I was 7. Can't be that bad. Boost to win gameplay I don't even know what you're getting at there. The combos don't HAVE to be there out of necessity it's just to clear out some of the monotony, they're fun to look at
That was the best way to start a review. "I'm glad you said that because we're starting with sonic unleashed for mobile devices!" "......................wha" *shitty music plays*
Why didn't they keep this game design in future Sonic games? The in game and CGI graphics look better than all the later Sonic games. This is the tone and quality every Sonic game should have going forward.
Fearless Reminds me of how sad I was that I didn't have an Xbox 360 and thus couldn't play Sonic 06 when it came out... For both of us, we definitely dodged a bullet XD
I'm kinda sad that some people considered this game one of the worse Sonic games just because of the werehog stages. I mean it wasn't really that bad. It was kinda enjoyable and night stages music were pretty good aswell. I guess if only the enemy music wasn't inputed. The only complaint have with the game in the Ps3/360 is the collecting of medals.
Ryan Jones Kinda like what Fire Emblem Fates does... That would be amazing, tbh. burgerkingJ I don't disagree with anything you said about the night stages, but I do want to say that saying "but the music was good" is applicable to nearly every Sonic game, good and bad (with some exceptions)
James Plata After seeing more of your comments, you flat-out reject it and despise it like it's the bane of your existence. It's fucking 50/50 when it comes to the stages. It's not like Unleashed was a complete spin-off.
Well, obviously you despise it no matter what. I enjoyed it myself though I do see its flaws. It's your POV. You're pretty much a Republican Sonic fan. Can't bother to really go on here because, again, the opinions on this are pretty divisive and are locked on with their views.
Wearing headphones using only half the volume I normally use and I almost jumped out of my skin here. I really wish these videos had more consistent volume levels.
I still consider Sonic Unleashed to be my favorite Sonic Game. Yeah, the nighttime stages aren't the best, but I don't find them horrible either (especially on the Wii version where they are split up and don't take over 10 minutes usually). The Day stages are fun, and I honestly prefer Unleashed's level design to Sonic Colors. Plus it has a pretty decent story, what I consider one of the best stories in this series (which granted, isn't saying much, but that's beside the point). I enjoy the good much more than the bad annoys me, and because of that, I enjoy this game a lot. No, it's not the best Sonic game, I am fully willing to acknowledge that. But I enjoy it all the same.
Soniclink137 yessss unleashed is my all time favorite sonic game. I freaking love the story, how sonic was portrayed, and the feel of traveling to different countries
Soniclink137 I basically agree with all points you mentioned (well, okay, I technically prefer Generations more). I by no means think this game is perfect (especially in the pacing and control compartment, because this game has horrible pacing and controls like shit), but the sense of speed and presentation more than make up for it, for me.
xcalibur64 1. The Control - I respectfully have to disagree there. I feel that Sonic is way too slippery, especially when compared to Generations, and his overall weight feels way to heavy, which also adds to the slipperyness of his normal ground control. Top that off with a lack of an air dash once you get the air boost, and it makes platforming a bigger chore than it needs to be (so thank God the level design is more about going fast, than platforming, or I'd tear my hair to shreds by the end of the game). 2. The Pacing - Because of Unleashed's two "characters" being two polar opposites in terms of speed, the length of the Werehog levels, and how each playstyle can have 3 stages in a row and then have to take a backseat for 3 or so continents in a row until they are playable again, the overall pacing is all over the place and only consistently fast or slow when either the Hedgehog or the Werehog play through multiple stages in a row. The sun and moon medals don't help things in the HD version, either, because Unleashed's level design, particularly as normal Sonic, encourages speed, not exploration, so being blocked by medal pay walls grinds overall progression to a halt and forces you to go back to previous stages or hubs, just because of how the game's level design and overall structure don't really complement each other at all. I still love this game, to this day, but the two problems I went over do hold it back from being my favorite game in the series and game in general.
xcalibur64 Jesus man, do you have to find every comment that disagrees with your opinion and respond to it? We get it, you like Unleashed, you don't have to seek out every comment to convince everyone it's a good game.
3 years. Three. Years. Its already been 3 years since this video came out, and I gotta come back and make this comment. This video means so much to me. I found John's videos back in late 2016, the Sonic 1 and 2 8-bit video. This specific marathon means o much to me because of when I found it. My parents divorced, my mental state in shambles, with even more grief to come. But this video reminds me of what kept me in tact. John, I know you more then likely wont see this video, but thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I cannot say that enough. Thank you.
I had to download it from my pc by connecting my phone because my parents couldnt pay my phone internet so i had an lg 370 punt the game file a foulder and install it also assasin creed
I love how everytime Johnny criticizes a genuine problem with a game the comment section gets filled with "I actually didn't mind all the glitches and bugs..." Or, you know, the equivalent of that.
Ryan Sanders Super Mario Odyssey is just an expensive Sonic Adventure/Unleashed copy rip-off, only with Mario characters. This why prefer Unleashed more so over to Mario Odyssey.
I think the difference is that Super Mario Odyssey enchanted fans upon announcement, and then enraptured them upon release, garnering almost unanimous praise, while Sonic Unleashed was mixed from the start and still is today. Forgive my Pseudo-intellectual vocabulary choice.
Honestly, I don't think that many people hate Unleashed anymore. Yeah, nobody considers it perfect and not many would even put it in their top 5 favorite Sonic games (purely because of the Werehog), but now that people are much more willing to actually calm down and fairly judge the game, they're able to see that there's plenty of good in this game, and the bad isn't even all that bad... just long. Remember that this is the very first game that tried to pull Sonic out of the horrible rut he was in after Sonic 06, and that Werehog didn't make the best first impression. The good news is that despite all the horrible, even unnecessary backlash the game got, Sonic Team was able to dig out that positive that people brought up about the game (the day levels were friggin' awesome) and use it to their advantage in Colors and Generations. Heck, it was almost baffling that they were experimenting again with Lost World. Oh well, good to know that they're back on track with Forces.
Holy crap, Eliot is bigger than Johnny. Like... taller. All this time, I've kept picturing him as the runt of the group when I listen to your let's plays. XD
This video was nostalgic to me in more ways than one. I remember back in 2008 when I was 13 playing this game and how I enjoyed it so much and then I saw your video Johnny on Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Unleashed. After I saw your review I said "This guy's pretty entertaining and I can relate to him! Subscribe!!" Who'd have thought that almost a decade later at the age of 21 I'd still be looking at your content and you'd still be going strong! It's encouraging to see that. You keep up the good work Johnny and keep going strong!
Elliot:so....when's the sgb playthrough Johnny:i don't know sometime this year i guess It's already 2018 and we still dont have a sonic unleashed playtrough on sgb
Sҽphιroтн安哥拉 Agreed Both IGN and Gamespot review of Unleashed is what made me stop listening to videogame critics about any game and turn to UA-camr and Let's Players like Johnny, Clement, Brain Stracth, and Cobi because while I may not agree with everything they say, I respect and listen to their opinions because their honest, fair, and u get a full playthough of the game so u can see what your getting into, which I think is a million times better.
Johnny, that moment in 11:26 was sheer comedic gold to me and it summarizes my reaction to playing this game for the first time to a tee. just epically well done. love it. :D
Dark Eco gave Jak more to play with than Dark Gaia did for Sonic. I mean in Jak 3 Dark Jak was decked out with all kinds of badass powers at his disposal vs Sonic's stretchy arms.
I honestly did not find the Werehog sections to be bad or boring going into them. They were a good break from all the fast-paced action and the combat was great (at least for me).
The Little Engie That Was Surprised He Couldn't I honestly agree heck if they brought back those kind of stages, simply make them a bit more open, replace the were-hog with Knux and Bob's your uncle!.
The Little Engie That Was Surprised He Couldn't I also kinda liked the combat stages too, but why didn't they just use Knuckles for this? could have enrichened the story too! :)
I liked the Wii's Werehog more over the HD version. The Wii version took the liberty of breaking some longer levels into chunks which made it a little more bearable for me.
I knew that Elliot was coming back for this. I called it during the chronicles review. You just can't have an unleashed review without Elliot talking about the wii version
I nearly cried when I saw this review pop up. My favorite reviewer and my favorite game equals endless possibilities (Btw Endless Possibilities is the best song ever)
For those who dont remember, next is the Zelda Marathon. Hopefully he's only doing Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild; because those four games alone will probably last until July.
Yeah, it does seem like it takes him longer to make these videos now, even the shorter ones. But at least the videos are great, and definitely a lot quicker than AlphaOmegaSin (love his videos too, but dang almost 4 months since his last video)
I was looking forward to this review, not just because I like this game, but it's now time for him to move on to Zelda! It's funny because his last Zelda marathon started after he finished his 3D sonic marathon.
Here is another problem with the Wii version. 1ups aren't placed in the level. You have to collect enough sun and moon medals to open doors that lead to rooms where you figure out a puzzle to get a 1up
i agree. while i think it's nice that you can regain your 1ups when you re-enter a stage, puting them in rooms and not the stages as a hole is still a dick move....
Honestly, I like that mechanic about the Wii version. It lets you keep up the speed instead of trying to slow down and look for collectables; I can't imagine how frustrating that would be with the physics in this version.
@@KinnikumanUpLoader01 I mean, at the time of Unleashed, every Sonic game beforehand had an ending of "gather the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic turns Super, beats ancient god monster/experiment gone wrong." And with no playable Super Sonic till Colors, it kinda makes sense that the fans got tired of it
@@KinnikumanUpLoader01 I can understand fans getting tired of it, but you shouldn't throw away tradition. They could've kept the Chaos Emeralds involved in the plot without rehashing the "Super forms vs demi-god final boss fight" all the time. It's like Dragon Ball without the Dragon Balls being involved in the plot.
If you want to play the HD version, play the 360 version on Xbox one. The console’s added power causes the frame rate to become way more stable, and I’ve only noticed slowdown on like 2 occasions.
Fun Fact: Unleashed was originally meant to be the last Sonic game. Which explains why Eggmanland was finally completed. But then they realized the Werehog wasn't exactly liked all that much. But it's still the best looking Sonic game to date. I mean just look at the high quality cutscenes
I'm glad it isn't. Not calling Unleashed bad. But it does have multiple flaws and later Boost gameplay Sonic game ( minus Forces ) improved on alot. Generations should've been the last Sonic game. In terms of modern that is.
8:17 Funny you mentioned the food from Final Fantasy XV in this since the person who designed the food in this game eventually moved to Square Enix to design the food Ignis makes in Final Fantasy XV. XD
I doubt the ps3 couldn't handle rendering the constantly shifting backgrounds. Naughty dog made an entire level built on a moving train with everything in motion around the same time.
i played both.... daytime stages were clearly the highlight of both versions... but i will admit that each version had it's pluses, werehog or not. i did like how the werehog exp system was handled in the HD version, but liked how short the stages were in the Wii/PS2 version. honestly, if they mixed the best elements from both into ONE version, that would be the best experience... plus the only thing i did hate about the werehog is the same 2 themes that play in stages, but i can excuse the theme for the Titan/Big Mother fights cause it didn't play that often....
this game is WAAAYYYYYY better than people give it credit for. honestly dont listen to any critic and just play it for yourself and youd be surprised the amount of passion that went into it
I replayed the PS3 version of Unleashed during the pandemic and even got the platinum. When I first played the game I really enjoyed it. But during that time it made me enjoy and appreciate it even more. It’s definitely up there as one of my favorite Sonic games. I got the Wii version in 2008 first and enjoyed it. I hope we get another Sonic game that has a grandiose adventure like unleashed
Pixar quality Graphics. Flawless Soundtrack. Near Flawless Story. Lovable characters. Best Sonic voice cast in the franchise (4kids cast) Best Acting to top that one off. Fastest gameplay in the franchise, amazing beat 'em gameplay to add to it, and I like the Tornado Defense sections, and especially both gameplay styles for the final boss. The level design just demands for speed, which is loved. And the Werehog levels are greatly designed. I have SO MUCH fun playing it. I play it over and over again. The list goes on. As for the framerate: I played this game on PS3, it runs at 60fps perfectly on the Hubworlds and cutscenes. But it runs at 60 pretty rarely in actual levels, there it's mostly 30. But when stages are really detailed and amazing looking, that's when it goes down. But the lag never killed me ever.
Cybion Gaming to vaguely quote the mgs lets play, they dont wanna continue devil may cry because they have to dmc 2 next and if they do dmc 2 they are closer to the reboot
There is something really funny about this review when compared to the original review. This time Johnny forgot about the Werehog's Shield button while he didn't in the original review.
Along with the Sonic 06 review, this has got to be my favorite Johnny vs review. It's the last Johnny vs review before the Tee Lopes intro era which means it's one last final hurrah to this fantastic era of SomecallmeJohnny which lasted from the Sonic Generations review all the way to this video, which to me will always be peak Johnny vs. All the other reviews both old and new are great, but these ones will always be remembered fondly by me as they were made during some of the best times of my life so it always brings me some big nostalgia seeing them, plus the commentary in those videos were A+. Having Sonic Unleashed be the subject of this review is also brilliant since that game was one of his first SGB reviews so it's a fantastic showcase of how much he's grown in all these years of doing this job (some vs videos have already turned 10 this year). It also reminds me of how much I've grown while watching him as one of my main inspirations as a content creator, starting my channel on January 14th 2016 now 6 years later here I am in my small European country rocking over 1000 subs. Thank you Johnny for creating great videos and for being an inspiration. May you find all the best luck and success in the future both on and off screen!
"I wouldn't recommend this as someone's first Sonic game- that's for sure." My 8 year-old self would wholeheartedly agree. This was my first exposure to the blue blur and this game kicked my ass at first. Specifically the daytime levels. The werehog was a really nice change of pace for me. (Which is probably why I'm still so forgiving of it to this day.)

Why didn't they keep this game design in future Sonic games? The in game and CGI graphics look better than all the later Sonic games. This is the tone and quality every Sonic game should have going forward.
BlueCorp Late but because of the graphics of the HD versions, it caused the game to lag. Check adabat day to see what I mean.
So is Colors, Generations and Lost World not good enough for you?
Nabinani 777 They looked good, but the designs were better in unleashed imo

Well... This game is a lot more strange than I thought it was.
Keegan Stormblade I saw that many years ago and thought it was a fan made product. I had no idea it was officially made for this long.
I thought it was for the ds because someone made a fake ds trailer. i got so sad when i realised it was for phones.
Keegan Stormblade Am I the only one who used to play it xD
Fearless Reminds me of how sad I was that I didn't have an Xbox 360 and thus couldn't play Sonic 06 when it came out... For both of us, we definitely dodged a bullet XD
I'm kinda sad that some people considered this game one of the worse Sonic games just because of the werehog stages. I mean it wasn't really that bad. It was kinda enjoyable and night stages music were pretty good aswell. I guess if only the enemy music wasn't inputed. The only complaint have with the game in the Ps3/360 is the collecting of medals.
Infernallect you gotta admit, it is a gorgeous looking Sonic game.
Honestly, if they'd just added a sinister beat or new instrument when an enemy encounter happened, it likely wouldn't have been as bad.

I by no means think this game is perfect (especially in the pacing and control compartment, because this game has horrible pacing and controls like shit), but the sense of speed and presentation more than make up for it, for me.
xcalibur64
+Ultimate Avenger What the hell are you talking about? Eh, fuck it. I'm just gonna block you if you're gonna try to piss me off.

Ah, Sonic Unleashed.
The game that I like that everyone hates.
Right next to Shadow the Hedgehog. (Yes, I still consider it to be a guilty pleasure)
Rio Kamichika.I like both games
Rio Kamichika a lot of people like Unleashed, it's just divisive. But I do love it ( though I only played the Wii version)
I know how you feel dude (Looks at Godzilla PS4)
Rio Kamichika for me, that guilty pleasure is sonic 06 [blaze, sonic (with gems), shadow, and omega only].
How do you do homing attack on the Wii? "You just flick the wiimote forward" i love that line

Johnny, that moment in 11:26 was sheer comedic gold to me and it summarizes my reaction to playing this game for the first time to a tee. just epically well done. love it. :D
Omg when the Sonic Unleashed mobile texture popped up I had instant flash backs to Assassins Creed mobile, with a texture title screen too.
Devil May Cry 4 had a mobile game too. 2008 was a weird year for mobile gaming.
Edit: It was actually 2011
I just realized the werehog is very similar to Dark Jak.
***** wasn't really the point :p

The Little Engie That Was Surprised He Couldn't i honestly enjoy those stages as well
I would agree, but they took WAYYY too long to complete sometimes!
I liked the Wii's Werehog more over the HD version. The Wii version took the liberty of breaking some longer levels into chunks which made it a little more bearable for me.

Remember when Chaos Emeralds were part of the plot? I miss those.
A lot of people got sick of that tradition.
@@KinnikumanUpLoader01 thats bullshit
I miss the games having a plot with more than 2 minutes of thought and nothing but puns and jokes
What about the PS3 version?
Yes! Johnny got Elliot to come back to review Sonic unleashed just like in the old days of the SGB reviews series
And over 10 years later, this game finally runs smoothly.
Fun Fact:
Unleashed was originally meant to be the last Sonic game.
In terms of modern that is.
ah good times. his first unleashed review was my first Johnny video. I'm glad he is returning back to this game. Thank you Johnny
Andy Spelic Johnny vs. Uncharted
The 360/PS3 version of Unleashed *_completely_* outranks the Wii/PS2 version.
I'll always have a soft spot for the Wii version as that was the one I grew up with. I never really played the Xbox/PS3 version.
I grew up more with the Wii version, which I regret; Xbox/PS3 is better
i played both.... daytime stages were clearly the highlight of both versions... but i will admit that each version had it's pluses, werehog or not.
i did like how the werehog exp system was handled in the HD version, but liked how short the stages were in the Wii/PS2 version.
honestly, if they mixed the best elements from both into ONE version, that would be the best experience... plus the only thing i did hate about the werehog is the same 2 themes that play in stages, but i can excuse the theme for the Titan/Big Mother fights cause it didn't play that often....
Agreed.
I feel like a lot of people only say that because it looks prettier and is faster.
Sega:
"Hey, Link turned into a wolf, and he's fucking elf. With Sonic already being an animal, this is bound to work!".
this game is WAAAYYYYYY better than people give it credit for. honestly dont listen to any critic and just play it for yourself and youd be surprised the amount of passion that went into it

I'd say Johnny's opinion is justified, but i like it too.

Best Sonic voice cast in the franchise (4kids cast)
Best Acting to top that one off.
As for the framerate:
I played this game on PS3, it runs at 60fps perfectly on the Hubworlds and cutscenes. But it runs at 60 pretty rarely in actual levels, there it's mostly 30. But when stages are really detailed and amazing looking, that's when it goes down. But the lag never killed me ever.
It’s only 60fps on the flying sections everything else runs at a uncapped frame rate
Sonic Unleashed (Wii version) was actually the first Sonic game I played, and what got me to be come a fan ^_^

"I wouldn't recommend this as someone's first Sonic game- that's for sure."
My 8 year-old self would wholeheartedly agree. This was my first exposure to the blue blur and this game kicked my ass at first. Specifically the daytime levels. The werehog was a really nice change of pace for me. (Which is probably why I'm still so forgiving of it to this day.)
