I'm wanting to leave Adobe and move to resolve. Years ago I used the free version. I have mailed them twice with questions and they don't get back to you and one can not call them on the phone. Bummer. Great video and I am now subscribed.
Hmm, I would still hit them up on the support email. I have had luck usually within a few days of hearing back about bugs or potential bugs. But the great thing is we have a community on here as well as some other really great channels and Facebook groups that are excited to share any and all information. Welcome!
@@CreativeVideoTips Just after I posted this to you I got a nice returned email from Black Magic. So that is relief. I think once you own the product you can call if you have tech problems. I was thinking about getting the dongle because there are a few sellers that are notable that will still give you the speed editor and the software for 295. Can you think of a good reason why a person would not want a dongle. For the most part I'll be working from one station and I'm not afraid of loosing it or it getting damaged. What do you think?
@@sutv6754 nice. I have both. I prefer not using the dongle with my laptop because it’s just another usb to fill a port. The dongle mostly gets used when I need to run something on another persons machine. Both work fine though.
It’s funny how they are making devices that are exactly like old school videotape controllers. I guess that was always the best way of editing video right from the start. I don’t know why anyone would even try reinventing the wheel when it was already perfect. 😂
I bought the studio version in June 2021 and the speed editor was still free. I love it. I'm still learning but would definitely recommend it to anyone.
I got it in November 2021 when they JUST announced a price increase, people are still selling for 295 at the time, but now they are slowly creeping up in price, last time I checked it's 319.
I regret buying this thing. Aside from being limited to cutting (WTF?) this thing rarely -if ever- connects to my computer. Even with the USB cord (which defeats the whole reason I wanted this in the first place) it doesn't connect... ???
Ordered one yesterday from B&H, and can't wait to experiment with it, wish me luck guys, I hope I'm making the right investment, also question, does this work on any Mac Pro? I meant the software, thank you, happy editing folks.
have you ever had problems connecting with the speed editor? for some strange reason since a couple of weeks does not connect via bluetooth, but only via cable. I tried to hit the key combination to reset the speed editor but nothing. maybe you have a Solution for that.. thanks
Question... i know theres a free resolve studio version that comes with the speed editor. my question is. can we update that studio version? I heard that this free studio version is resolve17. Thank you for the answer
I disagree with the cons regarding removing your hand from the device. I have the full sized keyboard and even then I have to remove my hands from the specialized dials and buttons.
Great video man, thanks for the review :) I may not be the target audience for this device (involved in game design/animation rather than film/screen media), but I would absolutely LOVE this if it had some reprogrammable functionality and support for external programs. As I'd only use it for basic edits in Resolve, having the option to remap some of the unused keys for use in programs like Blender, Photoshop or Unreal Engine would make this perfect for my case. Still a great deal to get both the software and the speed editor so I may get it anyway at some point 😁
Thanks for watching. Being able to customize it would be really ideal, even as just an editor. I think it goes against their mindset for how to sell product to promote their software and free software to promote their product. I'm thankful that it's all good stuff.
This unit its great when it works, not sure what's going on but there is a lot of people whit the same problem, the jog wheel stops working out of the blue all the time and it works some times, did. the reset,, that never work for me and there is no tech support anywhere for this issue, can someone help.
Hi, do you know the answer to this question? I just got a my speed editor few days ago.... Before i was using ShuttlePRO v2..... BUT 😁 I'm intresert in Loupedeck CT.... Meaning that I have tough about get rid of S.E. and S.P. and use Loupedeck CT only (to safe space on my desk). Do you have any experience of Loupedeck and if so, would you recommend it? Thanks, Brynjar.
Hi! I am personally very interested in how well the loupedeck ct performs but have yet to pull the trigger on purchasing one yet. I’m kind of curious if there might be a newer model in the works. I have heard good things about it but it wouldn’t replace a spot on my desk for the speed editor.
the real question is if it’s worth waiting 4 months for... because I’m STILL waiting on mine.. the real kick in the pants is I’m forced to use the free version til it (hopefully) arrives. It’s like I’m being punished for wanting the free thing they were offering at the same price as the license :/
Man - I'm sorry! 4 months is just freakin' silly. Honestly, if you're wanting to get your hands on it sooner - you might try call around to different resellers to see if they have stock. I have heard of some folks recently that have been able to find one from a smaller supplier (not BH or Adorama). I personally like using it a lot for the first stages of building rough cuts so in that case, it's worth it - but I get it if you need that license right away and it's held up.
As a new Resolve user, And editing in general, Do you recommend I learn editing while using the speed editor, Or is it recommended to learn editing using Keyboard/Mouse/Menus first?
I think the answer really depends. The speed editor will teach you solid habits but can be slower initially to get use to. Maybe start with what you have, and then after a little bit of time, if you’re stil into editing pickup the bundle with the studio version. Both keyboard and speed editor can be very fast once proficient.
Great question - I often use the number pad on the right side of the keyboard to move things on the timeline. So after hitting option y - I push it down 3 seconds with the number pad - " + 3 period " or just "+3." The period replaces the :00 in frames so 3. is 3 seconds. - then hit enter.
Was about ready to buy Resolve and then looked on B&H and they had the Speed editor with it at the same price. Was like "Jackpot!" Great video, Subbed. 👍
@@CreativeVideoTips I received the editor. I can't seem to get the Bluetooth to work. I'm on Windows 10. I know right? If I had a Mac it would be easier 😂 It works with the USB adapter I used. Great to hear they are getting those shipped out finally. You sure have waited a while! The cut page is definitely worth a day getting use to it. It won’t replace the edit page in some cases but it’s a nice first step.

What you are stating about the clean feed output is false. @01:50 If you want to do colour-critical work you simply can't depend on the "Clean feed output" alone for grading purpose. The OS and graphics card will all be a factor. This is a bad advice to throw out the old Mini montor hardware solutions. Been there done that, does not work. Tons of issues.
Hi Adam, are actually right when it comes to color critical grades. My intention for myself and a lot of folks is to just see the image nice and large to cut with. Also when you remove desktop video from your system you tend to deal with less “issues” in other editing software platforms. But yep you are right there is definitely a place for them.
I got my Speed editor as soon as it was available for purchase here in Canada. I love this thing, it saves me so much time. My only real complaint is it can be a little flaky in Windows to get it going, it was much smoother on my MacBook Pro, but I needed more capacity plus my discreet video chip got fried from overheating. There just weren't great options from apple at the time my MacBook broke so I built a PC. I loved that I was able to get both the Speed Editor and Studio version of DVR, that deal definitely made me pull the trigger when I did. I don't haven't done any multi cam stuff yet, so I haven't run into the multi cam issue you talked about. I still have a lot to learn on using my speed editor, but I am very happy overall so far. Great video, good information that many missed when reviewing it. I actually watched the live even from Black Magic when they released it. I was on the phone within a couple of days with a Canadian supplier getting on the waiting list lol.
That is so cool to hear. I did the exact same on ordering it as soon as I could after watching the announcement. Thanks so much for watching and please let me know if there are any parts of using the device (besides using windows) that you would like to know more about.
You still need decklink or similar interface if you are serious about grading because the color chain with the OS and GPU is manly garbage in any platform.
True point. I should’ve clarified that aspect in the video. I appreciate you watching. For cutting or non super color critical work the software only works excellent.
I got it because of this video, and after using it for about 3months I can say that it DOES NOT DOUBLE my editing speed :) It is a great addon to a regular keyboard and mouse tho. I integrated it quite well in my workflow. If one could custom program those cam buttons then I could get rid of my computer keyboard, but I can not see how to Not use mouse. It is great for cutting in cut page. I can do it on fullscreen footage, without seeing controls.
Thanks for sharing, I can second your findings that it won't double your editing speed. Only editing many many hours will do that. I find it most useful for culling through a huge bin of b-roll to pull some selects for cutaways.
Could a work around for the opportunity 2 be to have a black image and then adjust the duration and then delete it? Talking about unobtainium. I ordered mine one the third of December, and I still haven't seen it.
Absolutely. In fact you really could just leave a black png in your bins for that reason. I did that on a job recently. And it’s faster to have a real asset then a generated clip because you can source tape cut it in. Hopefully yours shows up soon - I’ve seen a few of my colleagues here get there’s just recently.
Could you do a video about the color page, and like quick color correction. I have an almost 2 hours long lecture shot on two cameras and need to make them just a bit more similar in color. Any tricks? Thanks for good content :D
Great video! I just subbed, I got the speed editor but I’m having an issue trying to use it wirelessly my Mac can’t see the speed editor when it’s not plugged in, is there a way I’m supposed to link it? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the sub and watching! Yeah it is a little quirky moving to new computers. First of course make sure you are in resolve 17. Then if you’re having trouble - remove the Bluetooth device, then plug it in with a usb cable, launch resolve make sure it’s working (it should), then pair with Bluetooth after you unplug. (This will be in a video in 2 weeks, but currently this is what I do when going between suites)
Great review. But I think that a smart cut feature is a extremely good feature to have under your fingertips. If you are doing any interviews or vlogging with persons that aren't fluid in talkig, it will be one of the most used features of speed editor. And even a main reason to use speed editor.
Thanks Oliver! I think it might just be that I’ve not had great success in moments when I’ve needed smooth cut or fluid morph or whatever they call it. For sure it is a great button to have if you can make it work for your. Cheers!
Nice video sir. I got this speed editor for free sometime back myself when stock was difficult to obtain. I'm considering the "DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard" so I can just use the keyboard and replacing my current keyboard all together with it.
@@CreativeVideoTips I know! Using that 5 days a week now, it’s amazing. Hey important question: could you PLEASE do a video on how to export a proper working AAF? It’s been driving me crazy the last two months. There seems to simply be no way to do this properly. Always slightly out of sync, even with all transitions removed, etc
All fair points, they might add that overwright might happen if the timeline isn't timecode synced, and I'd say its highly likely they will add the cam support to traditional multicam-grant did say they would overlap more in future- Also just to be aware man that clean feed out isn't a viable replacement for accurate coulor gradeing as it can be effected by OS Coulor management which is quite bad -thats why decklinks exsist -
Very true about the color management! I should have mentioned that. I was thinking more in terms of offline cutting just to see a large image, see eyelines etc... Thanks for watching!
@@joellouisfire yes as OS Coulor management is notoriously terrible/can shift, the only way to avoid that is with dedicated hardware so useing a dedicated piece of hardwear such as a decklink or ultrastudio is the only way to maintain accuracy between display and output, it won't be toto bad but theirs a reason why reference monitors are super expensive
If you are calibrating your monitor, I would not sweat it. Yes there is technically a difference but so many editors will work with a blackmagic io box and not calibrate a reference display regularly and think they are “accurate”. It’s kind of all relative. Try to always look at your content on the device it will play on and adjust from there if you don’t like it. Unless you are in a room with several creative directors and billing $800/hour it’s not a big deal.
It's not for everyone for sure and not necessary, but it can be a fun tool. The 3 wheel interfaces you are mentioning are geared toward color correction where this tool is built for editing (and mostly editing in the cut page). All are well built but yeah it would be cool if they had a less expensive color grading tool.
That’s very true. I should have been more detailed about that. I think 9/10 people using the software these days aren’t doing that though. A few years back and it was a different story.
Thank you for making feel youthful again. I started my editing career in a machine room with beta sp and digibetas, but for so long the JKL or SDF has been my comfort zone for navigation.
Hi Daniel, you will need to connect with the bluetooth settings. However, if you haven't updated your speed editor firmware in the past month or two, you'll need to do that first on a computer with the cable plugged in. Good luck!
FYI... SPEED EDITOR FINALLY ARRIVED WITH 17 LICENSE. ORDERED FROM B&H 12/1/20, SHIPPED 2/22/21, ARRIVED TODAY 2/24/21. The jog shuttle wheel feels good. I still need to install the software. I look forward to see how well it works and if my 'muscle memory' from the SONY Betacam editors still has any tone.
@@CreativeVideoTips Ohh ok, it looks like it can be really helpful if it was capable of working with other software's. Ive been searching for a controller that that might have similar quick keys like this one and a scroll wheel.
Crancked through full 10 minutes and 59 seconds. Well worth it, thanks for going into each of the pros and cons. Definitely more pros. The mouse dragging etc, does waste a lot of time. I have ShuttlePRO V2, which is ok, but setting it up is just difficult.
Great video. One question how can I jump to the next transition. I can't figure it out. Sure I can jog fast but there has to be a way to hit a button to jump to the next and previous transition point.
Thanks James, this is a really good question! And one I’ve still wished existed for the last 5 months. As far as I know you need to still use your regular keyboard command buttons to jump to next and previous edit point. They really want us to use the dial a lot, haha. If you find different please do tell!
@@CreativeVideoTips yes it's kind of crazy I know you don't have to be on the actual point to edit but the fact that you can't jump forward and jump back quickly is ridiculous. Perhaps they will do some kind of firmware upgrade to use one of the keys in the future. Thanks for your great videos really helpful.
LOL, why not just buy another license with the free DRSE and sell the license if you don't need it. (The promo is ongoing on BH as of 2/24/2021) But I have to say I am still waiting for BH to send me the stuff that had been ordered for a month now.
@Creative Video Tips Just found this video, Chadwick - excellent job in giving a fair and balanced review. Thank you. I'm tossing up whether to buy one of these or not, but as a strictly amateur videographer, there's no way I would ever be working with multi-camera shots, so having that entire block of multicam buttons smack in the middle of the device is a terrible waste of space for me. That's in addition to the couple of wasted buttons you pointed out. I've actually emailed the suggestion to have user-programmable keys - even if only that big centre block of them - which would make the unit much more attractive to non-professional editors like me. Keep up the good work - I subscribed to your channel a couple of weeks ago and have been bingeing out on your content since then, as I come to grips with both Resolve and video editing in general.
Hi Darrell, I wish. Now one thing worth noting that has been fixed since I made this video is Multicam support in the edit page. This does work now and is very helpful. The only thing I'd love to have that the full keyboard has is a way to insert black filler with a keypress. It's mapped to one of the F keys and is not available as a keyboard shortcut to add to my Keychron keyboard (my current fav keyboard). But now the price is only $200 different between the 2, so it's worth a good look at the full size keyboard instead of just the speed editor.
@@CreativeVideoTips Hey man, thanks for the response! I am receiving the Editor Keyboard tomorrow. If I understand you correctly it does not ‘fix’ the problems that the Quick Editor has? Too bad. 😕
Those CAM buttons are not redundant (even in the Cut Page) just because you don’t have a multi-cam operation. The CAM buttons can be used to access specific tracks within the Cut Page. If you have stacked tracks, CAM ONE will access the first track and so on.
Amazing my friend, you have my attention and subscription. P.S. - I have the Intensity Pro 4K card, the display on my attached TV is zoomed, couldn't find any online. Can you suggest how can I change it?

Another missed opportunity : make a keyboard for left handed people, i.e. with the search dial on the left.
Chadwick, I always look forward to your videos. Great Job 👏🏻 ~ Paul
Thanks Paul! Glad it was helpful.
Super!
Thank you very much!
Same I got the last piece of the bundle of my fav multimedia website LOL
I love it!
I got it in November 2021 when they JUST announced a price increase, people are still selling for 295 at the time, but now they are slowly creeping up in price, last time I checked it's 319.
Adorama still has them free, mine arrived 2 days ago!
Is it worth it? absolutely! I Just unboxed mine today and used it and I love it! makes editing much more faster and easier!
It really is! glad you are digging yours too.
I tried to hit the key combination to reset the speed editor but nothing. maybe you have a Solution for that.. thanks
"Want me to reaffirm your choice because you've already ordered one?"
I FEEL ATTACKED! ☺😆
Question... i know theres a free resolve studio version that comes with the speed editor. my question is. can we update that studio version? I heard that this free studio version is resolve17. Thank you for the answer
I enjoy your training videos and comments! Always good information. Keep up the good work and thank you
Thanks Joe! Do you work mostly in DaVinci or other editing apps too?
Hot gonna lie i would have bought it played with it some and then put it in a closet and forgot about it.
I disagree with the cons regarding removing your hand from the device. I have the full sized keyboard and even then I have to remove my hands from the specialized dials and buttons.
Just buy a streamdeck or even cheaper, a touch portal app for android or iOs and you're set. bye bye limitations...
Hi do you know how to check remaining power battery ? tks
In the preferences - control surfaces you should see your speed editor at the bottom (within resolve). This should show you the percentage.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank u very much. Do you know if speed editor is on charge when switch off and connected to cable ? have a good day
Great video man, thanks for the review :)
I may not be the target audience for this device (involved in game design/animation rather than film/screen media), but I would absolutely LOVE this if it had some reprogrammable functionality and support for external programs.
Dear Michael, it's you that make register for youtube, I follow your tutorial from bilibili to your channel here and I'll continue to support
thanks, i will do my best to have patience for tNice tutorials because i normally don't have much, i wish there were chapters here so i could skip
This unit its great when it works, not sure what's going on but there is a lot of people whit the same problem, the jog wheel stops working out of the blue all the time and it works some times, did. the reset,, that never work for me and there is no tech support anywhere for this issue, can someone help.
What setup are you using for audio? I like your speakers but how are you driving them off the Mac?
I agree they should have customizable key options
As a new Resolve user, And editing in general, Do you recommend I learn
editing while using the speed editor, Or is it recommended to learn
editing using Keyboard/Mouse/Menus first?
I think the answer really depends. The speed editor will teach you solid habits but can be slower initially to get use to.
Maybe start with what you have, and then after a little bit of time, if you’re stil into editing pickup the bundle with the studio version.
Both keyboard and speed editor can be very fast once proficient.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks!
Saeee hahahah, you just have to play with the daw and you gaing experience slowly
don't give up!, there are more difficult programs then tNice tutorials one
Amazing crack, and the tutorial was perfect. I´m testing it right now
Hi, may I ask how you made that gap at 3:36 with the num keys. I tried to replicate this and I couldn't make it work. You would really help me out
Great question - I often use the number pad on the right side of the keyboard to move things on the timeline.
Love it Phillip. Yeah it’s an incredible deal right now. Thanks so much for the sub too! Lots more tutorials are in the works.
Same here. I was about to fork out the money for just the software, but then saw it came with the Speed Editor. Well worth it.
@@CreativeVideoTips I received the editor. I can't seem to get the Bluetooth to work. I'm on Windows 10. I know right? If I had a Mac it would be easier 😂 It works with the USB adapter I used. There are not a lot of videos to set this up. I'm pretty good with tech stuff and I actually got my head-scratching. lol
@@PhillipBridgesReviews great to hear it came so fast. There was an update for it with 17.2 which just came out a week ago. It needs to be plugged in for that update. Try making sure that’s loaded. Then with resolve open and it plugged in try to pair it.
@@CreativeVideoTips I have fully updated to 17.2 I'm losing hope with the Bluetooth. 😂 I would like it to be able to but, I don't have to have it. It's now more of a mission now to fix it.
Great info, I ordered min Nov 19th and just now got a message that it has shipped. I wanted to buy the studio version so why not get this for free. Not sure if I will use it as I have never used the cut page, might have to learn how to use it. Or sell the speed editor we will see.
Thanks so much for watching and please let me know if there are any parts of using the device (besides using windows) that you would like to know more about.
showed, how do I fix tNice tutorials? I followed exactly what you did.
Hopefully yours shows up soon - I’ve seen a few of my colleagues here get there’s just recently.
thank you m8! big 'preciation!
and i wish you good luck with your future endeavors ❤
Could you do a video about the color page, and like quick color correction. I have an almost 2 hours long lecture shot on two cameras and need to make them just a bit more similar in color. Any tricks? Thanks for good content :D
Great idea. Resolve has some automated tools that help a lot and get pretty good results. I’ll add that one to the “to make” list.
Cheers!
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for that! I’m definitely waiting for that video.
Cheers!
I need to save up for this editor... thxxxx nice video
shadow fight how do you open the channel rack?
solid video man!
thank you very much =)~
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
Absolutely perfect intro 😅👌🏻
Thanks for watching!
Nice video sir. I got this speed editor for free sometime back myself when stock was difficult to obtain. I'm considering the "DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard" so I can just use the keyboard and replacing my current keyboard all together with it.
Im so down with all criticism points
Hey one thing that just changed is that you can edit Multicam with it now. The old school way. It’s awesome!
All fair points, they might add that overwright might happen if the timeline isn't timecode synced, and I'd say its highly likely they will add the cam support to traditional multicam-grant did say they would overlap more in future-
Also just to be aware man that clean feed out isn't a viable replacement for accurate coulor gradeing as it can be effected by OS Coulor management which is quite bad -thats why decklinks exsist -
Very true about the color management! I should have mentioned that. I was thinking more in terms of offline cutting just to see a large image, see eyelines etc...
Thanks for watching!
Interesting! I'm using clean feed to a calibrated monitor. Are you saying that it may look off regardless and there's a better way to do this?
@@CreativeVideoTips that's fair enough then, it's very interesting to see blackmagic balence the line between being an online/offline tool
Unless you are in a room with several creative directors and billing $800/hour it’s not a big deal.
thanks man!!
You bet!
How's it going? Did you learn how to use it?
I am definately not buying the speed editor. Would be awesome if it had 3 wheels but that unit is like $10,000.
I ❤️ Speed editor! Worth every Cent!
Just so you know, you can't do broadcast color correction with video clean feed. Its not in the right color space
That’s very true. I should have been more detailed about that.
I think 9/10 people using the software these days aren’t doing that though. A few years back and it was a different story.
The jog wheel: "Fun new way to move around" You're so young! Before NLEs, all editors had that feature. All of them.
Thank you for making feel youthful again. I started my editing career in a machine room with beta sp and digibetas, but for so long the JKL or SDF has been my comfort zone for navigation.
Hello can you explain me how I can connect it the speed editor to the IPad Pro. I didn't find any information regarding this. Thanks in advance.
Hi Daniel, you will need to connect with the bluetooth settings. However, if you haven't updated your speed editor firmware in the past month or two, you'll need to do that first on a computer with the cable plugged in. Good luck!
Smooth cut is like autotune. If you don't dial it in well enough, you can see / hear the artifacts. But when it works, it is invisible.
That's actually a really good metaphor - I will try working and tweaking its usage more this year.
You can still buy the speed editor with license for the same price as just the software
yeah that's a pretty slick deal still.
Best video my friend thank you

Me too :) Thanks for watching!
Is this controller compatible with other software & does it allow for remapping?
Other software being like a Digital Audio Workstation?
Great question Carlos - unfortunately no. It’s pretty specific to only Resolve and has the most functionality in the cut page.
@@CreativeVideoTips
Ohh ok, it looks like it can be really helpful if it was capable of working with other software's. Ive been searching for a controller that that might have similar quick keys like this one and a scroll wheel.
hahaha f*ckn mad dawg. Yes sir, just here for you to affirm I made the right choice!
Crancked through full 10 minutes and 59 seconds. Well worth it, thanks for going into each of the pros and cons. Definitely more pros. The mouse dragging etc, does waste a lot of time. I have ShuttlePRO V2, which is ok, but setting it up is just difficult.
Tyy bang, sehat selalu!
Great video - thanks for sharing (from reddit post...)
Thanks so much for checking it out! Glad it was helpful.
(The promo is ongoing on BH as of 2/24/2021)
But I have to say I am still waiting for BH to send me the stuff that had been ordered for a month now.
Would the Black Magic Editor Keyboard ‘solve’ a lot of the ‘missed opportunities’ of the Black magic Speed Editor?
Man! You say what one is wanting to hear in the first 15 seconds, haha, get straight to the point, love it!!
Haha, hoping to. I hate when UA-cam videos waste my time - so I’ll make my promise to try to never waste anybody else’s.
Amazing my friend, you have my attention and subscription.
P.S. - I have the Intensity Pro 4K card, the display on my attached TV is zoomed, couldn't find any online. Can you suggest how can I change it?
the keys are Kailh red switches, so they are your standard mechanical/gaming keyboard fare. no hotswapping so no fun changing them up.
anyone. I appreciate it!!
Even if the speed editor was completely useless, I’d still say that it was worth it for the free premium version of devinci resolve
Outstanding -- thank you. Hope someone at BM is watching!
