Right off the bat at only 44 seconds in I am confused. The "Close Up" key is great and immediately places the zoomed clip above the selected clip but I can't figure out how to adjust the Y position by holding the "Close Up" button down. If I press and hold - it places the clip but no adjustment of Y using the jog wheel. If I select the new close-up clip and press the hold button again it places another close-up clip on top of the first close-up clip?? Possibly a difference in function between the speed editor and the editor's keyboard??
Thanks so much - glad you found some useful tips in this one. It sounds like they are starting to get more and more of them shipping so crossing fingers yours will arrive soon.
Super nice... Hopefully BM bring full cam funtcionallity button on edit tab. I use cut page to rough cut then switch to edit... And see what they going to add with the well click. So far just make noise.

Timing on those is TBD but in the works once I have more solid tips to share. Thanks for the kind words.
Great video Chadwick! 3 channels I subscribe to drop videos every Tuesday morning. Creative Video Tips is a great addition to my morning coffee! Keep it up, keep going.
Hey Chadwick, you're one of the best DR instructors on YT. Quick q on the cut page, why can't I see the audio trim icon on the side section? On my Cut Page in DR 18.5, it combines the video and audio tracks without being able to edit audio separately.
honestly - it just depends on the day and what I'm feeling like using (keyboard or speed editor). In general, I don't use the speed editor very often on the edit page. But I still use both quite a bit. That being said, cutting in A-Roll only is kind of one of the best things about using the speed editor and for that I would highly suggest trying to get comfortable with it in the jog and scroll modes. It's super fun, and handy. Hope this helps!

Hey Chadwick, hope you´re doing absolutly fine. Ive got a problem and i don´t know how to fix it. hope you have an idea. I use the speed editor in the Cut page. I´m in source mode to pic clips to the time line. At the moment just append that i have a bunch of clips choosen. However i clic append and every clip goes to V1 (how it suppose to be) but every regarding audioclip opens up a ne autio track! But i want the the audio goes always to track1. Any idea how i can fix that?
I cannot begin to tell you how desperately I want a $200 editing panel from Davinci that serves primarily to edit the attributes of a video. Basically an Inspector board, where I can physically change the X and Y positions of the selected video, the zoom level, crop level, dynamic zoom, audio levels, etc. Just give us a panel with a handful of knobs, some buttons and a dial and I'll be committed to Davinci for LIFE. As of now, no 3rd party brand panel will work because of Davinci's closed AI.
That would be cool! Hopefully blackmagic is paying attention to this. I love the way you're thinking. Some of this can be done with the color panels, but I'm all for a simpler edit focused panel beyond the speed editor.
@@CreativeVideoTips from what you’ve used, CAN I edit those things with a color panel (for example, the micro panel)? I tried looking it up and found nothing on it besides how they edit on the color page. Id even consider saving up for one of those right now if they could pull it off.
I am doing motorbike vlogs and I have a handlebar cam pointed at me, I have been after an easy way to incorporate that camera footage with my helmet cam and vice Versa,It should work a treat. Does it drop in the in out selection or the whole clip.
You can do the same J Cut without having to disable the audio tracks and the linked selection, by simply clicking once the option key, on your keyboard, and then holding the Roll key, on the Speed editor, and scrolll with the wheel.
If you put all your clips in a timeline, you can drag this timeline from the bin to the source monitor. Then you create a second timeline as destination. Now you can switch between the timelines with the source and the timeline buttons on the speed editor. It is a kind of the source tape in the cut page.
@@CreativeVideoTips but in Avid you can see it also as a timeline in the timeline panel. I have mapped it to ESC, so with one button I can switch between source timeline and destination timeline.
@@eduardstuermer that's funny - we have a very similar mindset - my avid custom keys are set to F1 being my toggle between the source/record timeline view :)
@@CreativeVideoTips This feature is the one I miss in Resolve or Premiere. I often use a timeline per shooting day, but also timelines with preselections. I find it very tedious to scroll in a bin if you have more than hundred clips in your project. It's like a pancake timeline, but I you can use it even on a smaller monitor.
@@eduardstuermer @Eduard Stürmer yeah I would like that in the edit page too. Have you tried using source tape in the cut page by shoot day or scene yet? It's pretty similar to working like that from stringouts - the advantage is you don't need to create timelines for it (it can sort by your bins), but the disadvatage is you can't retain any specific i/o marks or notes easily without first making a selects timeline. Have you seen this video here - ? ua-cam.com/video/SRYSwdN8xaI/v-deo.html
Recently stumbled onto your channel after reconsidering DaVinci Resolve as my primary video editor, (currently use FCPX) and after watching this video on the Speed Editor Keyboard I'm more drawn to it. I am curious if you have or ever use the full Blackmagic Design Edit Keyboard, is it a viable option? Thoughts or future comparison video? Great stuff, keep up the great work. Cheers!
Question: Is there any way to isolate just one track to lay the default transition on? When I use the speed editor and I have multiple tracks and I only one it on say track one...it adds transitions to all video tracks and a audio transition to the audio tracks. I can't figure out how to force it to only add the transition to one track.
Hello Chad, I have a question? How do you drop in order multiple clips to the timeline using the speed editor on the cut page. It seems viewing them in source mode they are not in order. Do you have to name each clip in the media pool such as clip 1 clip 2 etc then you can drop them in the timeline? Hope this is not confusing. 😀
Hi - so in "source tape" mode you can choose the sort order. It's the center button up top, just to the left of the "source clip" view. Bin, TC, camera, date time, clip name, scene, shot, clip color, date modified, and date imported are all options. Hope this helps.
Awesome Gabriel! It really is cool to have a new way to work. And yes at some point those items did start working. Now if only they can let us do multicam (traditional style) in the edit page with that keypad! Cheers.
I don´t know if it's my unit but one thing that I find very annoying about the speed editor is the way the jog wheel works, it has a very pronounced delay, when you stop It keeps scrolling, I find the mouse to be way more accurate, is it just me?
For me, it's really just the shuttle mode that I don't like. Both the jog and scroll seem to be very responsive. A mouse is good too, and JKL on the keyboard is also really good.
As a full time mouse editor, the more I see people using the “speed” editor the more I am glad I’m a mouse editor 😂 loupedeck with all my macros and a standard keyboard mouse still seems the fastest to me. Maybe I’m missing something.
I'm also debating about the speed editor. I'm sure it feels pro and nice but I got myself a tourbox elite and don't ever need to look down to edit and can set up macros too
With J and L cuts would have been fantastic if once you have "Audio only" or "Video Only" selected that it only rolls that over. But oh well, hopefully it's something that gets added later.
This more or less demonstrates the reasons why I think the idea of a Cut Page AND an Edit page is a mistake. It doesn’t make sense separating edit functionality over 2 pages.. ‘An Edit is an Edit!’ and this should remain just on one page for simplicity and speed - the Cut page should have just been built into the Edit page I.e a customisable Edit page for those that want a simpler UI. Just imagine the Source Clip functionality in the Edit page - Super useful!
yeah, would be nice but the cut page is really your friend when it comes to blocking out your project. being able to see the whole project in one glance is a godsend as well
This product is beginning to look like VAPORWARE: I know several people with orders placed during the announcement, and NO PRODUCT IS BEING SHIPPED. That was nearly 3 MONTHS AGO... Does anyone know, is Blackmagic SOLVENT, and planning to SHIP THIS PRODUCT???
@@CreativeVideoTips B&H knows nothing, DaVinci sales just says "up to the distributor to get it to B&H", so researched today, and found Markertek on approved vendor list, and they not only had it in stock, but shipped it out right after lunch!
@@brianmi40 Yes, I ordered from Markertek a few days ago. It has shipped and gets here in 3 more days. They were the only vendor I saw that didn't say "preorder". Oh yes, and I am subscribed here. Been watching your videos to get a head start on the speed editor as well as Resolve. Love how you get right to the point!
Just ordered my speed editor and got an email saying it's out of stock. Pretty gutted cos I paid £20 extra to buy from the only place that didn't mention that it was out of stock (big shout out to jigsaw 24.. boo!) Must be flying off the shelves
Man I’m sorry. You are definitely not alone though. They appear to be very back ordered and in high demand. It will be worth the wait. Thanks for watching!
It's out of stock everywhere. I waited 5 weeks for mine. Ordered (and paid in full) in early December 2020, didn't get it until mid January '21. The stockist who took my order is now listing them as 'Pre-order Only' and only taking deposits this time around. I think Blackmagic Design seriously underestimated the demand. You won't regret the purchase it when it comes.
Very interesting - I see what you are saying. For me on a 24p timeline, smart insert is working on edit - but I had to be closer - 2 frames away from the edit point. Once I moved 3 frames away it did a normal insert (with the speed editor smart insert button). More clarity on the edit page with smart indicators would be a useful thing for Blackmagic to add in there.
@@CreativeVideoTips also the multicam in Edit … it would be nice if it takes over the mouse. Because to paint the cam on Cut is great. But sometimes is quicker “the old fashiob” way. I hope there is room for development. ‘Cause I do love it
Hmmm... I am not sure if the Speed Editor will be of any use to me. I produce drumcover videos with 7 cameras recording me at the same time, which I then edit in post to form one final video with a lot of different angles. My biggest challenge is usually to get all the 7 cameras in sync before doing any editing. If I understand that correctly, this means the linear workflow of the speed editor won't provide any use for my use case...
That's so cool you're a drummer! It's funny how many editors I have come across that aren't just musicians but drummers. There's a lot of cross-over there. Anyway - there are 2 very different methods of doing multicam in Resolve. One of them lets you use the speed editor (the cut page sync bin method) and the other way doesn't (the edit page - at least as of today). I really enjoy using the speed editor but in all honestly for something where you might want to tap a key to change angles on a specific rhythm - I would probably go with the edit page (non speed editor) method since rhythm is crucial. They both get you a similar result - the difference is in the cut page you really need to paint angles on and not play in realtime. Hopefully this helps your decision. The main thing I like the tool for is scrubbing a days worth of footage in source tape mode and quickly getting favorite takes into timelines. It's a good deal considering its free with buying the paid version of resolve at the moment.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for the detailed answer, it really helps. Yes, I also noticed a lot of musicians being also into photography/videography. At the end of the day I think creativity can have so many ways of expressing itself, which is something that makes it all so much more interesting. You are right, as the speed editor comes for free with the Resolve license, there won't be any regrets anyhow. I just bought the package today! Looking forward to the Resolve upgrade.
@@ElBoyoElectronico when I edit music videos to the beat, I usually use the blade tool and tap out my cuts in real time. for syncing I usually play out a 1k beep tone and match the audio waveforms (the shorter the beep the better) sort of like a slate clap. then just mute out the angles manually. which you have to do with multi cam. but even using an automated waveform monitor you still have to choose which clips.. so yeah its a sluggish process no matter what. but the speed editor could help in the cut page for detailed editing of cam changes, once they're blocked out
Well you did ask for comments, so here we go… I think the speed editor is a gimmick. Back in the days where you had an edit controller and you were going to tape to tape… That’s what it reminds me of. I’m not saying it’s not good and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s gimmicky and it feels like a toy to me. I would make a bet with almost anybody that I am faster with a mouse and my keyboard shortcuts then they would be with the speed editor. Much faster. I suppose in time I could learn to use it but why bother when you can just grab a clip and drag it in any direction as quick as your hands can move. And don’t forget on the edit page there is one of my favorite functions, swap clips. I can take a single clip or a group of them and swap them around anywhere I want easily and faster then you can do that in the cut page. Well that’s my two cents. And again we love your videos… We just don’t agree with you that the speed editor is better or faster than the edit page. The one thing I do love the cut page and I do use it is to take all my clips and put it into one reel and zip through it and find what I need. That’s really the only time I use the cut page.
Hi Allen, yep I love hearing comments and feedback so this is very useful. I have no doubt that you can work faster without the new speed editor or the cut page (partly because I know I can too). I do however think it really can make things fun if you're into trying new editing tools. About 8 years ago I started using a wacom tablet for the first time - I hated how difficult it made things that use to be so simple with a mouse but then I couldn't work in an edit bay without one. Jump forward a few years from then and I discovered MMO gaming mice and was hooked on those to go with my gaming keyboards. I think the key I've found is mixing it up with the tools can help some folks like myself stay excited and motivated to master new skills and tools. My hope with creative video tips is that I'm able to open people's eyes to these things that excite me about filmmaking or to get over hurdles on confusing topics that can use more clarification. (regarding speed editor - I think I'm about out of tips until I can find something new about it though) But I have so much more to share about Resolve/Final Cut/Workflows/Tools etc...
I totally totally agree with you. And I hope you will do a video on relinking media when you move your project over to another hard drive. To me, that’s where Resolve is at its weakest. This week I had to do a project in Premier Pro and after a couple of months in resolve, premiere Pro feels like a toy. 😊
Should they have called it a 'Speed Cutter' instead of Editor if you options are limited in the Edit page and it was pretty much designed for the Cut page? 😂
I like the way that sounds. I think there is a cultural vocabulary thing in the post world when people decide to use the word edit vs cut. Cut is generally used in higher end projects and Edit on lower budget projects and facilities. I find these semantics amusing but this is a good point Mason.
A "real" L cut or J cut should let you shorten one side of the audio WHILST you shorten the other side of the video. I wish the pretty but useless Speed Editor could do it.

If I press and hold - it places the clip but no adjustment of Y using the jog wheel. If I select the new close-up clip and press the hold button again it places another close-up clip on top of the first close-up clip?? Possibly a difference in function between the speed editor and the editor's keyboard??
Thanks for making these videos! They're great, and you're great at it!
Can you set in/out points and insert into the timeline when your in full view with the Speed Editor keys?
There are so many value bombs in this video. Thank you for that. Still waiting for my speed editor to ship here in Germany...
I agree completely. Regarding that wheel click - i’m not totally sure its actually a button. If I’m able to talk with someone at NAB I’ll be sure to report back.
Great videos, as always. Thanks. I would be interested whether this video needs a refresh now with Davinci 18.1.1? Your thoughts?
Thanks Viva, there was the change that added multicam support in the edit page that you can find here on that channel. That is really the only big update the device has had since created these launch tutorials. I'm currently testing the new iPad app and the cool thing is it does work on there too so expect to see it in those videos. Timing on those is TBD but in the works once I have more solid tips to share. Thanks for the kind words.
Great video Chadwick! 3 channels I subscribe to drop videos every Tuesday morning. Creative Video Tips is a great addition to my morning coffee! Keep it up, keep going.
You’re the best. Thanks dude!
its now October 2022...has anything changed for the better/worse with the functionality of the speed editor..?
Hey Chadwick, you're one of the best DR instructors on YT. Quick q on the cut page, why can't I see the audio trim icon on the side section? On my Cut Page in DR 18.5, it combines the video and audio tracks without being able to edit audio separately.
I just tried the close up key on the edit page and it does work if nothing is in the source monitor
Oh wow! I must have missed that. Thanks so much for commenting. I thought that seemed odd.
I love your tutorial. If you can translate in french it was so cool. Thank you.
If you have 20 minutes A roll footage which mode you select?editor mode or cut mode?I found this beautiful keyboard didn’t suitable dialogue
honestly - it just depends on the day and what I'm feeling like using (keyboard or speed editor).
@@CreativeVideoTips Because A Roll or Dialogue have so many repeat Wrong word,

@@aurora-a1901 I can see that for sure. Don't be a stranger on here. This is a great question you bring up - so many ways to get to the same end result.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial!
Was the close-up button ever fixed, other than the "source offline" workaround?
I am doing motorbike vlogs and I have a handlebar cam pointed at me, I have been after an easy way to incorporate that camera footage with my helmet cam and vice Versa,It should work a treat.
Does it drop in the in out selection or the whole clip.
Just found your page. Thank you! 😀
So glad you did! Welcome to the channel! Cheers 👍🏻
Yep - this is a great tip Eduard! Just like the 'ole Avid source record stringouts. Love it.
When I use the speed editor and I have multiple tracks
and I only one it on say track one...it adds transitions to all video tracks and a audio transition to the audio tracks. I can't figure out
how to force it to only add the transition to one track.
I think you've run into a limitation there, in this this case I'd probably jump to the edit page and make some manual selections to apply them
@@CreativeVideoTips thanks for responding! That’s EXACTLY what I’m doing. It’s a step or two extra, but it works. Thanks!
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you! ~Paul
I just got my Speed Editor and it is so much fun. Also, close up and title seems to work fine in Edit page. Maybe they updated the software ?
Thanks! So helpful.
Thanks for watching Shawn. 🙏
I think you can also just lock the audio tracks (or any tracks for that matter) that you don't want the Cut Page to mess with.
Anyone know why when I press the Close Up button while in the cut page, it just places a punched in image that doesn't play?
This sounds like it could be a bug, unless you did a close up of a still. Are you on the latest version Josh?
@@CreativeVideoTips I think it's a bug. I tried it on another timeline in the same project and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
If you press the dial down, it clicks. I wonder what it does?
As a full time mouse editor, the more I see people using the “speed” editor the more I am glad I’m a mouse editor 😂
loupedeck with all my macros and a standard keyboard mouse still seems the fastest to me. Maybe I’m missing something.
I'm also debating about the speed editor. I'm sure it feels pro and nice but I got myself a tourbox elite and don't ever need to look down to edit and can set up macros too
Thank you!
Thanks for watching 👍🏼
With J and L cuts would have been fantastic if once you have "Audio only" or "Video Only" selected that it only rolls that over. But oh well, hopefully it's something that gets added later.
Agreed. I’m hoping they will update some of these capabilities in version 18.
The Multicam part is no longer accurate. You can use the speed editor in the edit page with a multicam setup. Super easy.
Close up works the same as the cut page in the edit page now.
I like your videos! This basically made me not want to use the Edit Page.
This is great
Glad it’s helpful! Thanks for watching.

I really hope the multi cam buttons on the speed editor some time soon. I personally dislike using the cut page
I sure would like that too. It seems like it wouldn’t take much for them to program that in.
yeah, would be nice but the cut page is really your friend when it comes to blocking out your project. being able to see the whole project in one glance is a godsend as well
This product is beginning to look like VAPORWARE: I know several people with orders placed during the announcement, and NO PRODUCT IS BEING SHIPPED.
That was nearly 3 MONTHS AGO...
Does anyone know, is Blackmagic SOLVENT, and planning to SHIP THIS PRODUCT???
Hmm. It’s definitely starting to ship but I’m sure depends on the demands from each specific retailer. I would reach out to them and ask the status.
@@brianmi40 Good to hear! I have ordered from them before and never had any issues.

Man I’m sorry. You are definitely not alone though. They appear to be very back ordered and in high demand. It will be worth the wait.

@@CreativeVideoTips oh yeah, sorry forgot to rate and subscreeeeb!
Have done now. Love your stuff man, trez useful tackle
@@aeon8721 5 weeks doesn't sound too bad. You must have picked a good retailer! congrats
Smart insert also works in edit page. You just have to be within 7 frames either side of the existing cut. Unless that is a 🐞 on my machine 😂
Very interesting - I see what you are saying. For me on a 24p timeline, smart insert is working on edit - but I had to be closer - 2 frames away from the edit point. Once I moved 3 frames away it did a normal insert (with the speed editor smart insert button). More clarity on the edit page with smart indicators would be a useful thing for Blackmagic to add in there.
it missed the X position. Often you need also this, non only the Y. And yes the Edit page works differently
Yeah it would be nice if you could adjust side to side too
@@CreativeVideoTips also the multicam in Edit … it would be nice if it takes over the mouse. Because to paint the cam on Cut is great. But sometimes is quicker “the old fashiob” way. I hope there is room for development. ‘Cause I do love it
honestly I like it better in the edit page
CUBS!
