I’ve always avoided the cut page until I received my speed editor a couple of days ago. It makes basic editing so much simpler and more accurate. I love it!
I'm with you - avoided the cut page like the plague - upgraded to Studio 17 yesterday and learning the cut page is a priority. I can see the benefits. Next will be installing and using the speed editor.
looks like i need to hop on the bandwagon because I never use the cut page...i go straight to the edit page. Now with this new tool I might need to make this change a priority
I bet that anyone coming from FCPX will ALWAYS go to the Cut page first to build the edit (as what the software is designed to do). So, it was no big issue with me. Along with the Edit page, it's the best of both worlds to me. I'm sold from here to the moon.
Had mine for a few days and it's really exciting to use. I'm making the slow transition from Adobe to Resolve and figured the speed editor is going to give a little motivation boost to make it more worth it if I can get a rough cut faster. The wheel feels amazing, and really helps connect with the timeline and feel more precise.
Dude! This thing takes me back 25 years! (Also, the switcher in the ATEM Software Control program looks EXACTLY like the analogue model I learned on.) I, actually, came here looking to see if there was a setting to make the wheel click with each frame the way it did in my youth!
You buy the Speed Editor and get an activation code for the v17 Resolve 17 Studio (beta). I have had both of these in NZ since December. A very good deal!
Love your videos. Been dabbling in and out of various editors for over a decade, but never seriously until now. The free Speed Editor swung me to get serious as I try to develop my drone footage, so I'm now committed to Resolve in all it's glory and your tuts are by far the most informative and entertaining I've found, especially for covering the new v17 stuff. I have no idea where you find the time to make so many tutorials, but I appreciate each and every one of them. Much love from the UK ✌️
Yeah the combo of getting a free speed editor + Resolve Studio + the key runs Fusion Studio now is a fantastic deal. I bought the pack as soon as it was announced and received my Speed Editor a couple of weeks ago. Haven't used it yet but am looking forward to in the new year. And I'm really pleased that I can run Fusion Studio now with the same key. Long overdue, but very welcome.
I needed to learn about this. I like to smile while I learn so I chose to learn about this from Casey. 1 minute in and I'm NOT disappointed..."oooooooh squishies"...need I say more?
What a time saver! Black Magic does things right.I have completely switched to resolve. They have a deal now where you get 17 and the speed editor for $295,- NICE thanks for the demo.
Myself use to use just the edit page but after purchasing the speed editor that forced me to use the cut page as speed editor is limited in the edit page, wow what a difference now using the cut page has speeded up my editing and makes it less painful and more enjoyable.
I use this on the EDIT page all the time and it works awesome! Some features apparently aren’t available or don’t work but the expected ones DO! Love using this device. Super fast.
I've been considering this. I generally just use the edit page as the cut page didn't seem to add anything. I'm not sure I need the Studio features, but I think this would give me motivation to learn the cut page and make my simple edits more efficient. This review was far more convincing than those running through features.
I was going to buy a Studio licence, when I saw that this keyboard comes in free until the end of 2020. Thanks for the vid ! I will definetly order it soon :D
Lack of key assignment in today's age of peripherals really hurts this. Can't use it with any other applications either. Personally I'm still thinking the Contour Shuttle V2 is a superior peripheral to support editing. It can be used in the cut page... The edit page... and even the color page if you want. You can program the key's to your liking. And the actual dual layer jog wheel works more as you mentioned you would like. The main bigger outside wheel is a rotate left right and how far to control your forward back and how fast, while the top finger tip wheel allows you to scroll frame by frame for precise positioning.
Really cool to see it in such detail. This convinces me more than what i've seen/read so far to try and get this. Time to add it to my wishlist for 2021 black friday deals.
Casey, I agree This Video is super Rad ! perfect example of how to use the coolness. I can not wait for mine to get here ! Thank you for making this video 😍
Casey, how would you approach the cut page if you had external audio for your camera footage? I had to go into the Edit page, use Auto Align Audio, drop the stuff on the timeline with the correct audio, then go back to the edit page. Is there a way to do this in the Cut page without having to use the sync bin and create multicam clips?
After spending 1 minute with the speed editor, 2 things are apparent. 1. Append is too far away from the in and out keys. 2. Space bar / Play Stop needs to be closer to either the left or right hand while your hand is on the in / out buttons for the left hand or the jog wheel for the right hand.
My gf bought me this for Christmas. I am still waiting on mine but I think this is going to speed up my workflow a ton and really look forward to getting deep into this thing and learning it in and out.
Is the dynamic zoom-in effect on the source tape's audio waveforms (03:56) only particular to the Speed Editor's jog wheel? I have at least 50 clips per project, so all the audio waveforms scrunch up. Currently, I'm saving for a Speed Editor, so JKL keys for shuttle-ing around has been my go-to for now, but it doesn't produce the same zoom-in effect on audio. Otherwise, this video cemented my *resolve* to get a Speed Editor
I got it for free with a dongle for Fusion...I should seriously start to use this keyboard, everything you did looked really easy and fast! Thank you for the video Casey!

Finally got mine! Learning. About 50/50 at the moment but increasing each time I use it. :). What happens when you press the scroll wheel? Did you know you can press it?
This is nice! The Jog wheel could be separated so it can be near the mouse with right hand and the keyboard should be left of the laptop or computer keyboard. Then install a trackball where the jog wheel was. or a cup holder.
Great review, thanks. Like many ot the commentators here - it is very reminiscent of Video Tape edit controllers of decades ago. Video tape editing - What a Nightmare that was, especially if you were previously cutting FILM. Luckily NLE is more like film editing - but, I still miss my Moviola.
tbh it seems like BMD are almost surprised that this was popular. Like, no kidding, if they released a cheap stand alone jog wheel with just three buttons for shuttle/jog/scroll it'd sell like hot cakes. I don't know why they don't do that.

Really cool!
Did she say, “Happy Thanksgiving” while he proceeded to bite a taco???? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
This is nice! The Jog wheel could be separated so it can be near the mouse with right hand and the keyboard should be left of the laptop or computer keyboard. Then install a trackball where the jog wheel was. or a cup holder.
So, what cable did you end up using to connect your speed editor ?
Great review, thanks. Like many ot the commentators here - it is very reminiscent of Video Tape edit controllers of decades ago. Video tape editing - What a Nightmare that was, especially if you were previously cutting FILM. Luckily NLE is more like film editing - but, I still miss my Moviola.
I ordered the Studio version of Davinci and the Speed Editor was free. Ordered from Safe Harbor Computer 3 days ago.
Did you get it yet?
@@TheGhostPlanet Still waiting
Hope yours comes soon. Ordered mine today at the same place. Happy New Year. Paul
@@TheGhostPlanet Thanks....Happy New Years!
@@quentintyler Just heads up
Safe Harbor texted me yesterday and said they finally got the speed editor in.
tbh it seems like BMD are almost surprised that this was popular. Like, no kidding, if they released a cheap stand alone jog wheel with just three buttons for shuttle/jog/scroll it'd sell like hot cakes. I don't know why they don't do that.
I just got my DR Studio activation key with this Speed Editor! It feels pretty solid! Now I need to figure out how to turn it on and hook to my PC via Bluetooth...
